A veteran Ottawa cellblock officer is in hospital due to side effects of the "HIV cocktail" after being jabbed by a prisoner's dirty needle.

Special Const. Carlos Olivera, 43, was searching an individual who was arrested in the early morning of Dec. 17 when Olivera was pricked with a needle the HIV - and hepatitis-positive detainee was carrying, according to police union boss Steve Boucher.

He was admitted to hospital a day later and given a slew of drugs to fend off a possible HIV infection.

Olivera, who has been special constable for about nine years, was released before Chrismas but then re-admited to hospital Thursday after he started vomiting blood and seeing blood in his urine.

His condition is unknown as he awaits test results.

"It isn't uncommon that people are pricked by detainees with needles in their possession who test positive, or spat on," said Boucher.
