Today I look at how in 2011, 50 Cent has dropped a slew of classic tracks.

It started with a casual entrance to 2011 on “Happy New Year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwcYZyO5XFw)”. We were all a little surprised at the quality of the joint, then “Old 2003 Ferrari (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9qXdX5tWgU)” popped off and we really had to turn our heads. Could the same artist who slept through Before I Self Destruct and the astonishingly bad Curtis really be leaking classics on the net like it was nothing? Where did this revived 50 come from and what brought about this sudden change? Or is this really all that out of the ordinary? Shouldn’t we expect this by now from the same man who created the classic Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and has been making brilliant moves ever since? Whatever it is, in 2011 50 Cent has delivered nothing but quality material, and none of it has been album-related. What’s up with this?
The last few years have not been kind musically to 50 Cent. His previous two albums have been complete garbage, although Before I Self Destruct was listenable, it was only worth about 2 listens, while Curtis had 1 beat worthwhile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rKIyZE3st0), not song, beat. No one even checked for that second G-Unit album except kids still wearing G-Unit clothing and aside from being clowned for losing all that weight for a movie role, 50’s name has been more synonymous with a blog site than actual music output for quite some time. So it was definitely a surprise when he started dropping tracks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZKeat1ulic) like once a week especially since they all (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3kyQcR8AbM) been really good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ETPHnI4V8Y). Is this just luck or has 50 been capable of doing this the whole time and was just lazy?
We always knew he had the talent. Power of the Dollar is still one of the best street albums of all time. Get Rich or Die Tryin’ is nothing but hits, and even The Massacre had some gems. But I’m sure with the Game bullshit, the Olivia bullshit, G-Unit not being able to help themselves and Shyne Moses getting out of jail 50 Cent has been a little burnt out, and probably just altogether jaded about the industry. There’s been rumors of label politricks which would explain the rushed sound of his last two albums (see: A Tribe Called Quest). But it’s a fact that most artists in hip hop still can’t fuck with 50. He entered the game a legend and has only kept that status since. His first (real) album sold billions in like 2 days. Before that he completely resurrected the mixtape market. Before that he was smart enough to know that an easy way to get noticed was to call out every single MC in the game. This is a brilliant mafucka, and that’s without even going into the “do you want a fast check or do you want shares in this company that’s about to be bought by Coca-Cola?”
Back to today though, in 2011 we have 14 joints from 50 Cent, and all 14 have been on point, and that ain’t even counting the way he slaughtered the recent Gucci Mane track “Recently (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TEyoTJgfh8)”. And he sounds hungry. It’s like these last few years of “did he fall off?” made him step up and prove that he can still do it when he wants. His flow is tight, the bars are inspired, he ain’t just rapping to rap, he’s rapping for you to listen to him, and he’s got that classic 50 sound again, boastful, gangsta, boss status.
It don’t surprise me, when you’re that talented you can always bring that heat, you just have to want to do it, and the last few years it seemed like 50 just plain didn’t care. But now he’s clearly focused again and the result is further proof that 50 Cent will go down as a legend in hip hop, an MC who can literally do whatever he wants in this game. He can stop trying and still sell a couple records, or he can step back up and set the internets on fire. Let’s just hope nothing discourages Curtis so he can continue on this hot streak cause right now he’s batting a thousand in 2011, he back like Jordan and definitely ready for another few titles.
