Surprise! Alien Planet Made of Diamond Discovered

A newly discovered alien planet that formed from a dead star is a real diamond in the rough.
The super-high pressure of the planet, which orbits a rapidly pulsing neutron star (http://www.space.com/10931-neutron-star-bizarre-superfluid-core.html), has likely caused the carbon within it to crystallize into an actual diamond, a new study suggests.
The composition of the planet, which is about five times the size of Earth, is not its only outstanding feature.

illustration shows the alien planet around pulsar PSR J1719-1438, where ultra-high pressures caused carbon to crystallize in the remnant of a dead star. The planet is made of diamond and orbits a dense pulsing star with a radius smaller than that of our sun.

The planet's parent star is a special kind of flashing star known as a millisecond pulsar, a rapidly rotating neutron star formed from a supernova. The entire system, which is only the second of its kind ever discovered, is located about 4,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Serpens (The Snake).

A gem of a find

Seventy percent of millisecond pulsars found have a companion (http://www.space.com/6327-fast-spinning-stars-image.html), which provides additional energy to ramp up the pulsars' rapid rotation. Generally, this companion is a dying star called a white dwarf (http://www.space.com/11375-alien-planets-dying-stars-white-dwarfs.html); more than 180 millisecond pulsars have been found with white dwarfs over the years.
Theonly planet known to be orbiting in such a system was detected in 1992 until now."The pulsar was found in December 2009," lead scientist Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, told SPACE.com via email."We've been on the trail of the companion ever since." [The Strangest Alien Planets (http://www.space.com/159-strangest-alien-planets.html)]

From the ashes of a supernova

Known as PSR J1719-1438, this particular pulsar completes more than 10,000 rotations in a minute. Tiny and compact, it's only about 12 miles (20 kilometers) across, but it has a mass that is 1.4 times that of our sun.
PSR J1719-1438 transformed from an average star to a radio pulsar when a dying star in a binary system exploded. The compact core of the star formed with a very high rotation speed from the ashes of the supernova.
When the second star in the system reached the end of its life, it expanded as a red giant (http://www.space.com/11261-starquakes-giant-stars-pulse-sun.html) and finally morphed into a white dwarf. The pulsar began to suck mass off its companion, causing the pulsarto spin faster and faster until it attained its breakneck speed.

From dying star to diamond planet

What happened next depends on the system. Most white dwarfs continue to orbit the new millisecond pulsar, but some are consumed by it.
"The fate depends upon the mass of the white dwarf and how far it is from the pulsar," Bailes said.
If it is both close and massive, the two spiral together. Astronomers assume this is what happened to the 30 percent of millisecond pulsars found without a companion. [Top 10 Star Mysteries (http://www.space.com/24-top-10-star-mysteries.html)]
In the case of the diamond planet, astronomers think that the core of the white dwarf failed to merge completely with its companion.
"When they got very close, the star lost a lot of its matter and moved out to its safe distance of about a solar radius," Bailes said.
Now tiny, having lost more than 99.9 percent of its original mass and no longer engaged in the fusion reactions that drive a star, the dead core is classified as a planet.
Ironically, the star-turned-planet is larger than its sun. With a diameter of about 37,300 miles (60,000 km), it's five times the size of Earth, but 3,000 times larger than the millisecond pulsar it orbits.
The planet itself orbits the pulsar in a little more than two hours. The entire system would fit within the diameter of our sun.
The research was published online in the Aug. 25 edition of the journal Science.

Read about this earlier, the diversity of this universe will never seize to occupy inquiring minds.

Why not?

What if there are planets made of each of the elements on the periodic table?

huh huh huh?

food for thought

Fascinating.

^^ Yeah, if only they put work into space exploration and colonization. But nah, they'd just stand over the couch nagging "You promised me to bring me that planet three years ago, now where is it?"

lol styles..

nasa have actually released 2 news articles this week that are actually interesting, this one.. and the y dwarfs story..'planets being cool as humans' even tho im sure they known about these things for many many years.

They think the planet is all that remains of the original star, most of whose matter was siphoned off towards the pulsar

i hate to be picky, but~.. technical all planets outside of earth are alien, so your title is redundant. Alien Planet Made of Diamond Discovered. you could actually do away with the word 'alien', witch is likely to turn certain intellectual thinkers away from this thread, this is sad because this is really a great discovery. few would think that a planet orbiting a N-pulse star possible, let alone that a planet can exist in a high density environment my compressing it self.

other then that good thread...ps. i doubt heavily that life could survive in that environment.

this is very much related,. i just dont think i can give it justice.. lol

i can picture the idea in my mind, but i think i wont be able to describe it in english..

that pulsar would be resonating at a very high frequency, where denisty is higher.. our chakra's maybe be able to connect (data) with those sources..on higher levels of consciousness../higher senses
but overall.. id say it to me it resembles higher dimensions,. in this overall matrix :S (our bodies decoding the data we recieve through our senses thus creating this percieved reality)

sorry louis for the alien topic name.. i just copied what space.com had up.. starting with suprise is just as lame..

but this is a mainstream article tho.. it has to be caught by the masses.. suprise and alien.. with diamond!, where the buzz words, as i stated in another thread,, we are aliens anyway.. we are not natural to this planet..(water/our dna/came from the heavens/space?? be it metorites/godly/alien lol)

isnt carbon one of the main 4 elements of our DNA?

yes it is

and technically speaking everything came from space; But the word 'alien' is never past tense, Alien is only present. So if your fellpool born on Expell, your an Expelian not a roakian, thus you are not alien to the planet Expeel. same goes for Sleg(reptilians) born on earth. Ika Musume is not an alien she was born on earth. by your logic, fellpool are not aliens ether because they are the descendants of earthlings from the continent Mu.

sit on that Science fiction info.

so i was going to talk about the big bang and how everything came from the void, but then i realized to do that i have to talk about the creationist theory, then i thought fuck it, typed it in to my Google to get a pic but since Google has this new smart program when i typed in Big Bang, all that came up was...the boy band, clearly because i'm an Otaku Google mad the guess,soo... i decided to type in theory at the end but it only came up pics of the tv show, then had an epiphany this is a christian conspiracy to down play the more accurate theory. {Run on champion}

we need to activate more of our DNA,. get the double helix criss crossing on other neurons? (sp, plus i cant recall from memory if thats the right thing.. fuck a google search!) only 20 or so are active?

i just typed out loads.. but i wasnt sure how accurate/uptodate it was.. so.. i deleted.. lol

had to do with double helix and the elements of our dna.. and.. resonance :S

fuck i need to restudy. fractal sacred geometry/fibonacci numbers

Bah youtub is pissing me off.. i cant find videos i watched, the same tiem as i watched the above video..they was to do with sacred geometry with dna / resonance. :(
