people give their power away, to easily.. we need grass roots democracy, for the people by the people, not an illusion of democracy, made by the elite, for the benefit of the elite..

5jKhT9r1seM

i guess theirs only white people and arabs(and some blacks) here only from, a decent understanding of society.. while the normal folk think theirs nothing wrong, and that voting for ron paul in 2012 will fix this..

why protest, when your all happy with your governments..

Agreed.

If you want change it usually requires bloodshed (historically speaking).

Camping out and shooting iPhone(Capitalism) footage so your friends can click 'like' on Facebook 48hrs later won't suffice.

This is a generation of "Like button revolutionaries". It's comical.

Alec Baldwin has spoken out over the treatment of protesters in New York amid allegations police officers used heavy-handed tactics to control the crowds.

Hundreds of people have taken to the streets of Manhattan over the last week as part of the Occupy Wall Street protest against social inequality and corporate greed, and filmmaker Michael Moore joined them for a march on Monday night.

A number of videos have been posted online, appearing to show police officers using pepper spray on a group of women, while another allegedly shows a young man being tackled to the ground by a cop as he tries to talk to him.

Baldwin has re-posted a number of the videos on his Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/alecbaldwin) page and questioned the cops' actions in a series of posts on the social networking website.

He writes, "This is unsettling... Should NYPD officers be better trained in crowd control?... I think the NYPD has a PR problem... I think most NYPD officers want to do what's right. But protesting should be a right. Did 9-11 kill the right to protest in NY?... I think that people should have easier access to permits for the purpose of protesting."

Anonymous declared "war" on the New York Stock Exchange this weekend and vowed to "erase" the NYSE from the Internet on Oct. 10 as the Occupy Wall Street protest (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2394043,00.asp) entered its third week in New York City after a weekend that saw hundreds of protesters arrested during a planned march across the Brooklyn Bridge.
"On Oct. 10, NYSE shall be erased from the Internet. On Oct. 10, expect a day that will never, ever be forgotten," intoned a computer-generated male voice common to many Anonymous videos, in a warning posted on TheAnonMessage YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnonMessage) (video below).
The AnonMessage channel has been used to post several Occupy Wall Street-related video messages since the protest against lax regulation of the financial sector and growing economic inequality began on Sept. 17. Those messages include Anonymous' initial "official" video (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnonMessage#p/u/5/7oeo00RpHkw) regarding Occupy Wall Street and a warning sent last week (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnonMessage#p/u/2/s0WvqcGcIY4) to the New York Police Department that threatened retaliation if "the brutality does not stop" against Occupy Wall Street protestors.
Anonymous, until recently known mostly for wreaking havoc on the Internet through blunt-force takedowns of websites and opportunistic hacking attacks, has lent its help to low-tech street protests of late. Prior to its participation in Occupy Wall Street, the initiation of which is credited to the Canadian activist group Adbusters, Anonymous also had a large role in a string of live protests (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2391160,00.asp) against actions taken by the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) authority's police force.
The threat to "erase" the NYSE from the Internet was not explained, though in comments on the YouTube video, some speculated that Anonymous was planning a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack on the public-facing NYSE.com website, similar to DDoS attacks the group has used to take down websites in the past.
Others felt that would only be a minor setback for the NYSE and guessed that Anonymous was planning a larger attack, perhaps even an attempt to actually disable trading on the exchange.

Here's the transcript of the latest Occupy Wall Street video from Anonymous:
Greetings, institutions of the media.
We are Anonymous.
The events transpiring within Wall Street have caught our eye.
It seems that the government and federal agencies enjoy enforcing the law a little bit too much. They instate unjust laws as mindless automatons, blindly following orders with soulless precision.
We witness the government enforcing the laws that punish the 99 percent while allowing the 1 percent to escape justice, unharmed, for their crimes against the people.
We have observed this same government failing to enforce even the minimal legal restraints of Wall Street's abuses. This government who has willingly ignored the greed at Wall Street has even bailed out the perpetrators that have caused our crisis.
We will not stand by and watch the system take over our way of life.
We the people shall stand against the government's inaction.
We the people will not be witnesses to your corruption and ill-gotten profits.
We will not labor for your leisure.
We will not assist you in any way.
This is why we choose to declare our war against the New York Stock Exchange. We can no longer stay silent as the population is being exploited and forced to make sacrifices in the name of profit.
We will show the world that we are true to our word. On Oct. 10, NYSE shall be erased from the Internet. On Oct. 10, expect a day that will never, ever be forgotten.
Vox Populi, Vox Anon.
The Voice of The People is The Voice of Anonymous.
We are Legion. We are the 99 percent.
We do not forgive. We do not forget.
Wall Street: Expect us.

indeed i agree.. but constant attack will add to the decline of stocks on wallstreet(which have been getting lower and lower since occupywallstreet began)

the nyse op, had been discussed on anonymous irc platforms since august.. was just waiting for a date,.

the date is official now.. the nyse #op is more official than op#facebook

Visa card, mastercard, paypal, sony et all have all had a time out of service due to internet attacks..

imagine the total illusory crazyness that will be caused by shutting the nyse just for a day.. you know the lulz will be epic.

Anonymous USA (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Anonymous-USA/191475697569027)
Why are we fighting? Heres why:

1) Exxon Mobil made $19 billion in profits in 2009. Exxon not only paid no federal income taxes, it actually received a $156 million rebate from the IRS, according to its SEC filings.

2) Bank of America received a $1.9 billion tax refund from the IRS last year, although it made $4.4 billion in profits and received a bailout from the Federal Reserve and the Treasur...y Department of nearly $1 trillion.

3) Over the past five years, while General Electric made $26 billion in profits in the United States, it received a $4.1 billion refund from the IRS.

4) Chevron received a $19 million refund from the IRS last year after it made $10 billion in profits in 2009.

5) Boeing, which received a $30 billion contract from the Pentagon to build 179 airborne tankers, got a $124 million refund from the IRS last year.

6) Valero Energy, the 25th largest company in America with $68 billion in sales last year received a $157 million tax refund check from the IRS and, over the past three years, it received a $134 million tax break from the oil and gas manufacturing tax deduction.

7) Goldman Sachs in 2008 only paid 1.1 percent of its income in taxes even though it earned a profit of $2.3 billion and received an almost $800 billion from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury Department.

8) Citigroup last year made more than $4 billion in profits but paid no federal income taxes. It received a $2.5 trillion bailout from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury.

9) ConocoPhillips, the fifth largest oil company in the United States, made $16 billion in profits from 2007 through 2009, but received $451 million in tax breaks through the oil and gas manufacturing deduction.

10) Over the past five years, Carnival Cruise Lines made more than $11 billion in profits, but its federal income tax rate during those years was just 1.1 percent.

Just to name a few

any of you. umm.. i dunno what to call you.. people? still feel your govt does what is best for you?
do you feel the corporations respect the people and the planet?

do you feel like you should be treated as slaves/cattle?

i bet most of you moan about the injustices in society.. but do fuck all productive to make a change., or feel like your not worthy to make a change.. but the system is still fucking you.. but its ok..
cos why protest.. their all a bunch of hippies.. or script kiddies??

shame that these script kiddieses and hippies,, have higher morals and understand how fuct the system is.... unlike those who have been indoctrinated into capitalism,

dont you folk want people in charge who actually care for you, and for the enviroment?
instead of bailing out the same 1% while the rest of us/you struggle..

I was an art teacher in the Diocese of Rochester for 24 years. The pay has always been below poverty level. I’ve worked three – four jobs for years trying to make ends meet. One of my other jobs was to design and build sets for community theater.
Last March & April I received a critical spinal injury, and needed emergency surgery. Because I was a temp., the district had no legal obligation to assist in my expenses. I was hospitalized for 4 weeks. While I was strapped to my bed, my primary employer, The Diocese of Rochester, revoked each of my saved up sick days (over 60 in total). They also demoted me from permanent part-time to hourly. Finally, they refused to relinquish the salary I had set aside for our summer living expenses.
I was assured at the time of my surgery that I would have a job to return to. That was a lie. My principal replaced me with a volunteer.
Our family has suffered greatly from my loss of employment and equally the high cost of medical care. My retirement fund, after 24 years, has less than $2,000 in it. My savings account is empty. I am denied disability benefits because I was part-time. We’ve gone weeks without utilities that include; Gas, Electric, Phone, & Cable. I had to end my physical therapy weeks early because of the high costs per treatment. Our home is in foreclosure. I can no longer do physical work, and I cannot collect unemployment or disability benefits.
Our oldest son cannot afford to return for college. Our youngest son will go without a birthday party and likely Christmas this year. Both of our cars are broken down wrecks. We rely on them, but cannot afford repairs or legal tires.
We need money to live on. I risk re-injuring my spine and potentially dying or spending my life in a wheelchair if I return to a job now. If I do not find a job to return to, we risk losing what little we have remaining.
I am part of the 99%

I bought my house in 2005 for $125,000 more than I sold it for in 2009. Where was my bail out. Where was my bonus for taking a risk that didn’t pay off and didn’t increase shareholder value? That’s right, Wall Street got my bonus instead

Our disease is nothing compared to theirs of greed and selfishness. This country was not founded to suffer like this. The people supposed to be protecting us are the ones EXPLOITING US. We chose daily gas or food or rent because they isn’t enough for everything. I want a better life for my children. I want a government I can trust to govern us. I want to survive. I want to not be afraid of my future. THE AMERICAN DREAM IS NOW MY NIGHTMARE. I AM THE 99% AND I AM TIRED OF THIS SHIT

Because if you pay for internet you have the ability to NOT pay for products you would have to pay for if you don't have internet.

A month of internet with a 20 MB/S download speed limit would translate to about 52 Terra-bytes. Which is about 259 days of HD TV or about 12 million songs. So getting internet access will allow you to access all the entertainment you need for a negligible amount of money.

http://rt.com/files/news/anonymous-wall-street-attack-117/occupy-wall-street-2011.n.jpg

"Occupy Wall Street" demonstrators stage a protest near Wall Street in New York, October 3, 2011 (AFP Photo / Emmanuel Dunand)

The hacker group Anonymous says the reсent announcement that it will attack the New York Stock Exchange is actually a false flag operation to mar the Occupy Wall Street protests.
The initial threat, posted on Monday said that on October 10 the Anonymous would launch a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on NYSE, which would “erase” it “from the internet”.

Over past years, similar attacks have brought down websites of several organizations, which the hacktivists targeted for their actions like prosecuting online pirates or obstructing the whistleblower site WikiLeaks.

The new attack was dubbed Invade Wall Street in parallel to the ongoing country-wide protests.

“We… declare a popular war against the New York Stock Exchange. The 10th of October is a day that will never be forgotten,” a statement posted from the group’s name says.

However, as the FBI assured that it is investigating the supposed future cyber attack, the Anonymous group came up with a denial.

“Operation Invade Wall Street is bullshit! It is a fake planted operation by law enforcement and cyber crime agencies in order to get you to undermine the Occupy Wall Street movement,” the new statement said.

The text went on to expose an alleged plan of those behind the operation to make supporters of the Anonymous reveal their identities by using flawed software in the attack on NYSE.

The events resemble the August threat (http://rt.com/news/facebook-anonymous-destroy-privacy/) to take down the social network Facebook, which Anonymous first voiced and later retracted.

The fuss around the stock exchange may actually be a clever plot by law enforcers using the masked nature of the hacktivist movement against them, an action by a rival online community with goals different to those voiced by the Anonymous earlier, or simply faction struggle within the group itself. The general public can only guess.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michelle Obama wants to jump into the Guinness World Records book next week by helping break the title for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period.

The first lady will lead hundreds of local children in doing one minute of jumping jacks on the South Lawn on Tuesday.

The event will be reviewed by an official from Guinness World Records and will signal the beginning of a 24-hour challenge.

To break the record, more than 20,000 people around the world will need to do jumping jacks for a minute.

National Geographic Kids is leading the effort to break the record.

The exact record to break is 20,425 jumpers, set on March 22, 2011.

(CNN) -- Like the spokesmen for Arab dictators feigning bewilderment over protesters' demands, mainstream television news reporters finally training their attention on the growing Occupy Wall Street protest movement seem determined to cast it as the random, silly blather of an ungrateful and lazy generation of weirdos. They couldn't be more wrong and, as time will tell, may eventually be forced to accept the inevitability of their own obsolescence.

Consider how CNN anchor Erin Burnett, covered the goings on at Zuccotti Park downtown, where the protesters are encamped, in a segment called "Seriously?!" "What are they protesting?" she asked, "nobody seems to know." Like Jay Leno testing random mall patrons on American History, the main objective seemed to be to prove that the protesters didn't, for example, know that the U.S. government has been reimbursed for the bank bailouts. It was condescending and reductionist.

More predictably perhaps, a Fox News reporter appears flummoxed in this outtake from "On the Record," in which the respondent refuses to explain how he wants the protests to "end." Transcending the shallow partisan politics of the moment, the protester explains "As far as seeing it end, I wouldn't like to see it end. I would like to see the conversation continue."

To be fair, the reason why some mainstream news journalists and many of the audiences they serve see the Occupy Wall Street protests as incoherent is because the press and the public are themselves. It is difficult to comprehend a 21st century movement from the perspective of the 20th century politics, media, and economics in which we are still steeped.

In fact, we are witnessing America's first true Internet-era movement, which -- unlike civil rights protests, labor marches, or even the Obama campaign -- does not take its cue from a charismatic leader, express itself in bumper-sticker-length goals and understand itself as having a particular endpoint.

Yes, there are a wide array of complaints, demands, and goals from the Wall Street protesters: the collapsing environment, labor standards, housing policy, government corruption, World Bank lending practices, unemployment, increasing wealth disparity and so on. Different people have been affected by different aspects of the same system -- and they believe they are symptoms of the same core problem.

Are they ready to articulate exactly what that problem is and how to address it? No, not yet. But neither are Congress or the president who, in thrall to corporate America and Wall Street, respectively, have consistently failed to engage in anything resembling a conversation as cogent as the many I witnessed as I strolled by Occupy Wall Street's many teach-ins this morning. There were young people teaching one another about, among other things, how the economy works, about the disconnection of investment banking from the economy of goods and services, the history of centralized interest-bearing currency, the creation and growth of the derivatives industry, and about the Obama administration deciding to settle with, rather than investigate and prosecute the investment banking industry for housing fraud.

Anyone who says he has no idea what these folks are protesting is not being truthful. Whether we agree with them or not, we all know what they are upset about, and we all know that there are investment bankers working on Wall Street getting richer while things for most of the rest of us are getting tougher. What upsets banking's defenders and politicians alike is the refusal of this movement to state its terms or set its goals in the traditional language of campaigns.

That's because, unlike a political campaign designed to get some person in office and then close up shop (as in the election of Obama), this is not a movement with a traditional narrative arc. As the product of the decentralized networked-era culture, it is less about victory than sustainability. It is not about one-pointedness, but inclusion and groping toward consensus. It is not like a book; it is like the Internet.

Occupy Wall Street is meant more as a way of life that spreads through contagion, creates as many questions as it answers, aims to force a reconsideration of the way the nation does business and offers hope to those of us who previously felt alone in our belief that the current economic system is broken.

But unlike a traditional protest, which identifies the enemy and fights for a particular solution, Occupy Wall Street just sits there talking with itself, debating its own worth, recognizing its internal inconsistencies and then continuing on as if this were some sort of new normal. It models a new collectivism, picking up on the sustainable protest village of the movement's Egyptian counterparts, with food, first aid, and a library.

Yes, as so many journalists seem obligated to point out, kids are criticizing corporate America while tweeting through their iPhones. The simplistic critique is that if someone is upset about corporate excess, he is supposed to abandon all connection with any corporate product. Of course, the more nuanced approach to such tradeoffs would be to seek balance rather than ultimatums. Yes, there are things big corporations might do very well, like making iPhones. There are other things big corporations may not do so well, like structure mortgage derivatives. Might we be able to use corporations for what works, and get them out of doing what doesn't?

And yes, some kids are showing up at Occupy Wall Street because it's fun. They come for the people, the excitement, the camaraderie and the sense of purpose they might not be able to find elsewhere. But does this mean that something about Occupy Wall Street is lacking, or that it is providing something that jobs and schools are not (thanks in part to rising unemployment and skyrocketing tuitions)?

The members of Occupy Wall Street may be as unwieldy, paradoxical, and inconsistent as those of us living in the real world. But that is precisely why their new approach to protest is more applicable, sustainable and actionable than what passes for politics today. They are suggesting that the fiscal operating system on which we are attempting to run our economy is no longer appropriate to the task. They mean to show that there is an inappropriate and correctable disconnect between the abundance America produces and the scarcity its markets manufacture.

And in the process, they are pointing the way toward something entirely different than the zero-sum game of artificial scarcity favoring top-down investors and media makers alike.

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/10/5-reasons-why-occupy-wall-street-wont-work/246041/

It's easy to hate Wall Street. In movies, bankers are portrayed as heartless, greed-driven jerks. Some people blame the recent financial crisis and the recession that followed on Wall Street duping Americans into signing up for predatory mortgages. Others say that these rich bankers, traders, and investors don't pay (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/10/5-reasons-why-occupy-wall-street-wont-work/246041/#) enough money in taxes. These and other anti-Wall Street attitudes have led to a protest in Lower Manhattan that continues to grow. But for a variety of reasons, it isn't likely to accomplish anything.

Its Goals Are Unclear
Any protest that hopes to accomplish some goal needs, well, a goal. If a demonstration like this lacks concrete objectives, then its purpose will be limited at best and nonexistent at worst. At this time, all the protest really appears to stand (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/10/5-reasons-why-occupy-wall-street-wont-work/246041/#) for is a general dislike of Wall Street. But what does that mean?

Wall Street Doesn't Care
There's a key difference between the Occupy Wall Street movement and the Tea Party movement. The Tea Partiers' anger is directed squarely at the U.S. government. It began due to dismay at the bailouts and the massive Obama stimulus package. The Tea Party wanted less government interference in the economy.
But the Occupy Wall Street movement's anger is directed at bankers. Here's the problem: they really don't care. These protesters are not Wall Street's customers. In many cases they aren't even their customers' customers.

Over the weekend, I saw a YouTube video of some Wall Streeters sipping champagne as they watched the protests from a balcony above. This is an extreme example, but such bankers who fit the stereotype that the protesters hate obviously aren't moved by the demonstration. In reality (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/10/5-reasons-why-occupy-wall-street-wont-work/246041/#), the vast, vast majority of bankers, traders, and investors aren't out to rob the poor to feed caviar to the rich. They are doing honest work that holds together the global financial industry. That large majority of Wall Streeters will walk by the protesters and shake their heads at the crowds' misunderstanding of what they do.

The Protesters Can't Sway Congress
The Tea Party accomplished something very key: it helped to significantly alter the makeup of Congress through the 2010 election. It had a goal -- to put out of power the big government candidates -- and it accomplished that goal. The Occupy Wall Street cannot hope for any result as significant.
As mentioned, it doesn't have a clear set of objectives. But let's say, for argument's sake, that it has some general fringe-left goals. Some that have been suggested include new taxes on Wall Street and much stronger financial regulation. The problem is that these views aren't likely to catch on in Congress: even when the mix was much further to the left in 2009 through 2010, a relatively mild financial regulation bill was passed and even the Bush tax cuts remained intact.
The reality is that the U.S. is a center-right nation, and Congress reflects that. While some cities are farther to the left than others, they already have very progressive representatives. Meanwhile, the message of Occupy Wall Street isn't likely to catch on and affect any change in more center-right regions like the Tea Party did.

Their Timing Is Off
Even if the U.S. were to embrace the message of these protests, Congress would not act. The bailouts were hugely unpopular with voters, but they occurred anyway. That's because there are times when Washington just needs to be practical. When unemployment is stuck above 9% is such a time.
Enacting new financial transaction taxes or even more burdensome regulation will not be good for the economy in the short-run. Even many Democrats are worried that such aggressive actions threaten the recovery. That's the main reason why the Bush tax cuts were extended. As the banking industry remains fragile, the government isn't likely to wallop it with new fees, taxes, or regulation just because a few thousand protesters in Lower Manhattan are making some noise. The last thing we need is another financial crisis.

Banking is a Vital Institution -- Especially to the U.S.
Hating banks is counterproductive. You simply can't live without banks in a modern, sophisticated economy. Wall Street investment firms are equally essential. Capital markets and debt markets allow businesses to function smoothly. Without them, growth and progress would be much slower.
But the U.S., in particular, needs to maintain its healthy, vibrant banking system. During the financial regulation battle least year, a lawyer I know who works with banks and investors lamented the effort. He worried that Congress would go to far. Banking is one of the few industries the U.S. has left where we're a global leader, he said. He is absolutely right.
Finance is one of the few sectors where Americans can still find good-paying jobs at all levels. It's also responsible for a very significant portion of U.S. GDP. If Congress were to create burdensome new rules or taxes for the industry here, then the business would just move somewhere else. It could easily do so: there's nothing about finance that requires it to have a major presence in the U.S. Congress knows better than to risk the U.S. losing its competitive edge in such an important sector.

For all of these reasons, we aren't likely to see the Occupy Wall Street effort accomplish much. It doesn't have a clear focus, and practical realities will prevent it from achieving any vague objectives it might have. Those angry with Wall Street should seek more effective means of affecting change than this.

My thoughts exactly.

The protests don't need objectives yet. At this point, it's enough for the protestors to develop a community with some common philosophical groundings. The mainstream media is attacking the protests for reasons other than its reality.

One of the main reasons for growing indifferent to politics in any system is the idea that you're unable to accomplish anything by yourself. The thing is, these people don't really share their thoughts with the world, so they don't really know if there's enough people with the same ideas to make a difference.
So #OccupyWallStreet might not succeed in changing the political climate directly, but it might be successful at showing people that there are enough people with similar ideas to impact the political climate.

Herman Cain is an idiot because he suggests that the people who lost their jobs are to blame for losing their jobs. Clearly he doesn't understand outsourcing...or business climate...or really anything for that matter. I hope the republicans vote for him just to prove they aren't racist.

I don't know why people are so impatient. The protest is still in its early days. Maybe it will lead to a formal people movement; maybe it won't: either way it is at least a reminder that the political Left is not dead in America.

people keep saying this #occupy movement has no demands.. well they might not.. but they KNOW, what is wrong,., they might not have the answers (yet) but they know what the problems are and who they are caused by.

lol at the politicians trying to move in on this for votes..

When will they learn that the universe is a giant echo chamber and that all thoughts, speech and actions go out as waves, and on that return... the blow-back is incomprehensible. It's time they feel the repercussions of their actions.

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power.

We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.
They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one's skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless animals, and actively hide these practices.
They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.
They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.
They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.
They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.
They have sold our privacy as a commodity.
They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.
They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.
They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.
They have donated large sums of money to politicians, who are responsible for regulating them.
They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.
They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives or provide relief in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantial profit.
They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.
They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.
They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.
They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.
They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.
They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.*

To the people of the world,
We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.
Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.
To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.
Join us and make your voices heard!

^^ over time, the dismantling of govt and corporate fascism..

getting rid of tax breaks, and benefits for those corporations.

convicting those who have committed crimes.

from the wall street journal

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Monday that he’ll allow the Wall Street protesters to stay indefinitely, provided they abide by the law, marking his strongest statement to date on the city’s willingness to let demonstrators occupy a park in Lower Manhattan.
“The bottom line is – people want to express themselves. And as long as they obey the laws, we’ll allow them to,” said Bloomberg as he prepared to march in the Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Avenue. “If they break the laws, then, we’re going to do what we’re supposed to do: enforce the laws.”
Bloomberg said he has “no idea” how much longer the Wall Street demonstration will last. “I think part of it has probably to do with the weather,” he said.
Up til now, the mayor has been cagey when asked how long he’ll allow the protesters to stay, replying: “We’ll see.” His words Monday morning signal a stronger commitment to allowing the demonstration to continue unimpeded by municipal government.
Occupy Wall Street calls itself a resistance movement with participants from myriad backgrounds.
Bloomberg, the city’s 108th mayor, has a long track record as a strong defender of first amendment rights. Last year, he passionately defended plans to build a mosque and cultural center two blocks from the World Trade Center, a controversy that dominated media for months.
“This is the place where you can protest,” Bloomberg said last week, calling New York the “most tolerant, open city in the world.”
“Whether it’s the mosque or anything else, this is a city that values people’s rights and gives them the ability to say what they want to say. I think more so than other city that I know of around the world,” he said.
The mayor has also defended the NYPD during several incidents with protesters during the past few weeks.
“We will enforce the law,” he said. “The freedom of speech is the freedom to say what you want to say but it is also the freedom to let people have opposing views, and people that don’t want to…say anything to go about their business.”

Democrats are now trying to own the Occupy wall Street movement, conveniently forgetting that they themselves take large corporate donations to run their campaigns. This is a massive conflict of interest. Democrats are just as big a problem as Republicans, the only difference is, Republicans fully admit to being corporate slaves, whereas the Donkeys pretend that everything they do is so righteous, that they are incapable of being corporate lackeys. This is simply not the case.

i dont think your quite understanding the concept chevy,.

bankers gamble with our/your money,. their is a financial crisis due to the gambing.. when they gamble, and they win they keep it as a bonus, but when they lose, they put the expenses on the public,.

no one has even been held accountable for this .. oh i lie 1 banker has, he is saying great stuff.. lol

check this for an understanding of why bankers are hated.

http://www.youtube.com/user/MaxKeiserTV?blend=1&ob=4

anything on their could show you why this is going on worldwide

its basically a global insurrection against banker occupation.

they need to end coporate and govt fascism, capitialism at the moment is an illusion, a pipe dream., theirs no competition for anything.. the corporations who lie and cheat, and by bribing members of govts(lobbying) get bonus's tax breaks, and lots of other benefits..

people just want a fairer system,. the elected politicians arent doing anything about it,. and they never will. its up to us.

tax rates are portion of it. the real anger stems from the ability of banks and large corporations to use their money to gain influence among politicians. lobbyists that write legislation to the benefit of the banks. it's been known here for some time that our political process is bought and paid for. both democrats and republicans are in the pockets of the rich. it doesnt matter who gets elected, the interests of the middle/working class people are not being looked out for. tax rates, bailouts and lack of accountability are just symptoms of the larger problem. the people are at the mercy of the elite.

i know that historically thats just the way civilization has always worked, but america was supposed to be different. for a long time the citizens tolerated it because we were sold on "the american dream". recently that dream has become harder to attain and people are finally deciding to speak out about it. unemployment is almost 10% nationwide and among minorities and the young is even higher. the only real opposition in america is coming from those elite and the semi-prosperous americans still making money today. they dont see any need for change cause theyre still getting paid. they say that the unemployed are just lazy and if you lost your home or your savings you brought it on yourselves.

thats basically what sparked it but they have other shit their mad about too.

Hello, I briefly visited the “We are the 53%” website, but I first saw your face on a liberal blog. Your picture is quite popular on liberal blogs. I think it’s because of the expression on your face. I don’t know if you meant to look pugnacious or if we’re just projecting that on you, but I think that’s what gets our attention.

In the picture, you’re holding up a sheet of paper that says:
I am a former Marine.
I work two jobs.
I don’t have health insurance.
I worked 60-70 hours a week for 8 years to pay my way through college.
I haven’t had 4 consecutive days off in over 4 years.
But I don’t blame Wall Street.
Suck it up you whiners.
I am the 53%.
God bless the USA!

I wanted to respond to you as a liberal. Because, although I think you’ve made yourself clear and I think I understand you, you don’t seem to understand me at all. I hope you will read this and understand me better, and maybe understand the Occupy Wall Street movement better.
First, let me say that I think it’s great that you have such a strong work ethic and I agree with you that you have much to be proud of. You seem like a good, hard-working, strong kid. I admire your dedication and determination. I worked my way through college too, mostly working graveyard shifts at hotels as a “night auditor.” For a time I worked at two hotels at once, but I don’t think I ever worked 60 hours in a week, and certainly not 70. I think I maxed out at 56. And that wasn’t something I could sustain for long, not while going to school. The problem was that I never got much sleep, and sleep deprivation would take its toll. I can’t imagine putting in 70 hours in a week while going to college at the same time. That’s impressive.
I have a nephew in the Marine Corps, so I have some idea of how tough that can be. He almost didn’t make it through basic training, but he stuck it out and insisted on staying even when questions were raised about his medical fitness. He eventually served in Iraq and Afghanistan and has decided to pursue a career in the Marines. We’re all very proud of him. Your picture reminds me of him.
So, if you think being a liberal means that I don’t value hard work or a strong work ethic, you’re wrong. I think everyone appreciates the industry and dedication a person like you displays. I’m sure you’re a great employee, and if you have entrepreneurial ambitions, I’m sure these qualities will serve you there too. I’ll wish you the best of luck, even though a guy like you will probably need luck less than most.
I understand your pride in what you’ve accomplished, but I want to ask you something.
Do you really want the bar set this high? Do you really want to live in a society where just getting by requires a person to hold down two jobs and work 60 to 70 hours a week? Is that your idea of the American Dream?
Do you really want to spend the rest of your life working two jobs and 60 to 70 hours a week? Do you think you can? Because, let me tell you, kid, that’s not going to be as easy when you’re 50 as it was when you were 20.
And what happens if you get sick? You say you don’t have health insurance, but since you’re a veteran I assume you have some government-provided health care through the VA system. I know my father, a Vietnam-era veteran of the Air Force, still gets most of his medical needs met through the VA, but I don’t know what your situation is. But even if you have access to health care, it doesn’t mean disease or injury might not interfere with your ability to put in those 60- to 70-hour work weeks.
Do you plan to get married, have kids? Do you think your wife is going to be happy with you working those long hours year after year without a vacation? Is it going to be fair to her? Is it going to be fair to your kids? Is it going to be fair to you?
Look, you’re a tough kid. And you have a right to be proud of that. But not everybody is as tough as you, or as strong, or as young. Does pride in what you’ve accomplish mean that you have contempt for anybody who can’t keep up with you? Does it mean that the single mother who can’t work on her feet longer than 50 hours a week doesn’t deserve a good life? Does it mean the older man who struggles with modern technology and can’t seem to keep up with the pace set by younger workers should just go throw himself off a cliff?
And, believe it or not, there are people out there even tougher than you. Why don’t we let them set the bar, instead of you? Are you ready to work 80 hours a week? 100 hours? Can you hold down four jobs? Can you do it when you’re 40? When you’re 50? When you’re 60? Can you do it with arthritis? Can you do it with one arm? Can you do it when you’re being treated for prostate cancer?
And is this really your idea of what life should be like in the greatest country on Earth?
Here’s how a liberal looks at it: a long time ago workers in this country realized that industrialization wasn’t making their lives better, but worse. The captains of industry were making a ton of money and living a merry life far away from the dirty, dangerous factories they owned, and far away from the even dirtier and more dangerous mines that fed raw materials to those factories.
The workers quickly decided that this arrangement didn’t work for them. If they were going to work as cogs in machines designed to build wealth for the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and Carnegies, they wanted a cut. They wanted a share of the wealth that they were helping create. And that didn’t mean just more money; it meant a better quality of life. It meant reasonable hours and better working conditions.
Eventually, somebody came up with the slogan, “8 hours of work, 8 hours of leisure, 8 hours of sleep” to divide the 24-hour day into what was considered a fair allocation of a human’s time. It wasn’t a slogan that was immediately accepted. People had to fight to put this standard in place. People demonstrated, and fought with police, and were killed. They were called communists (in fairness, some of them were), and traitors, and many of them got a lot worse than pepper spray at the hands of police and private security.
But by the time we got through the Great Depression and WWII, we’d all learned some valuable lessons about working together and sharing the prosperity, and the 8-hour workday became the norm.
The 8-hour workday and the 40-hour workweek became a standard by which we judged our economic success, and a reality check against which we could verify the American Dream.
If a family could live a good life with one wage-earner working a 40-hour job, then the American Dream was realized. If the income from that job could pay the bills, buy a car, pay for the kids’ braces, allow the family to save enough money for a down payment on a house and still leave some money for retirement and maybe for a college fund for the kids, then we were living the American Dream. The workers were sharing in the prosperity they helped create, and they still had time to take their kids to a ball game, take their spouses to a movie, and play a little golf on the weekends.
Ah, the halcyon days of the 1950s! Yeah, ok, it wasn’t quite that perfect. The prosperity wasn’t spread as evenly and ubiquitously as we might want to pretend, but if you were a middle-class white man, things were probably pretty good from an economic perspective. The American middle class was reaching its zenith.
And the top marginal federal income tax rate was more than 90%. Throughout the whole of the 1950s and into the early 60s.
Just thought I’d throw that in there.
Anyway, do you understand what I’m trying to say? We can have a reasonable standard for what level of work qualifies you for the American Dream, and work to build a society that realizes that dream, or we can chew each other to the bone in a nightmare of merciless competition and mutual contempt.
I’m a liberal, so I probably dream bigger than you. For instance, I want everybody to have healthcare. I want lazy people to have healthcare. I want stupid people to have healthcare. I want drug addicts to have healthcare. I want bums who refuse to work even when given the opportunity to have healthcare. I’m willing to pay for that with my taxes, because I want to live in a society where it doesn’t matter how much of a loser you are, if you need medical care you can get it. And not just by crowding up an emergency room that should be dedicated exclusively to helping people in emergencies.
You probably don’t agree with that, and that’s fine. That’s an expansion of the American Dream, and would involve new commitments we haven’t made before. But the commitment we’ve made to the working class since the 1940s is something that we should both support and be willing to fight for, whether we are liberal or conservative. We should both be willing to fight for the American Dream. And we should agree that anybody trying to steal that dream from us is to be resisted, not defended.
And while we’re defending that dream, you know what else we’ll be defending, kid? We’ll be defending you and your awesome work ethic. Because when we defend the American Dream we’re not just defending the idea of modest prosperity for people who put in an honest day’s work, we’re also defending the idea that those who go the extra mile should be rewarded accordingly.
Look kid, I don’t want you to “get by” working two jobs and 60 to 70 hours a week. If you’re willing to put in that kind of effort, I want you to get rich. I want you to have a comprehensive healthcare plan. I want you vacationing in the Bahamas every couple of years, with your beautiful wife and healthy, happy kids. I want you rewarded for your hard work, and I want your exceptional effort to reap exceptional rewards. I want you to accumulate wealth and invest it in Wall Street. And I want you to make more money from those investments.
I understand that a prosperous America needs people with money to invest, and I’ve got no problem with that. All other things being equal, I want all the rich people to keep being rich. And clever financiers who find ways to get more money into the hands of promising entrepreneurs should be rewarded for their contributions as well.
I think Wall Street has an important job to do, I just don’t think they’ve been doing it. And I resent their sense of entitlement – their sense that they are special and deserve to be rewarded extravagantly even when they screw everything up.
Come on, it was only three years ago, kid. Remember? Those assholes almost destroyed our economy. Do you remember the feeling of panic? John McCain wanted to suspend the presidential campaign so that everybody could focus on the crisis. Hallowed financial institutions like Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch went belly up. The government started intervening with bailouts, not because anybody thought “private profits and socialized losses” was fair, but because we were afraid not to intervene - we were afraid our whole economy might come crashing down around us if we didn’t prop up companies that were “too big to fail.”
So, even though you and I had nothing to do with the bad decisions, blind greed and incompetence of those guys on Wall Street, we were sure as hell along for the ride, weren’t we? And we’ve all paid a price.
All the” 99%” wants is for you to remember the role that Wall Street played in creating this mess, and for you to join us in demanding that Wall Street share the pain. They don’t want to share the pain, and they’re spending a lot of money and twisting a lot of arms to foist their share of the pain on the rest of us instead. And they’ve been given unprecedented powers to spend and twist, and they’re not even trying to hide what they’re doing.
All we want is for everybody to remember what happened, and to see what is happening still. And we want you to see that the only way they can get away without paying their share is to undermine the American Dream for the rest of us.
And I want you and I to understand each other, and to stand together to prevent them from doing that. You seem like the kind of guy who would be a strong ally, and I’d be proud to stand with you.

The Mayor and Governor of my state are attempting to kick the protestors off the lawn of the capitol building possibly tonight. Tents included.

Same might happen in Houston and NYC

^^Did they give a reason for that?

State or local laws that prohibit sleeping in a state park or city park between the hours of 11pm -5 am.

People are now arguing about the true meaning of our 1st amendment. Like whether or not it overrules any laws a city council creates.

Does the freedom to assemble have curfew or private property constraints?

I don't know why there needs to be a law against that in the first place. And on the other hand, I don't see why it should be enforced.

It only feeds into the idea that freedom is being limited and that some amendments are sometimes only ink on paper with not much meaning.
