Ways of expansion of mutual relations were discussed at a meeting between Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and his Nigerian counterpart Oluyemi Adeniji.

A report released by the Foreign Ministry Media Department said that at the meeting, the foreign ministers of both sides referred to the need for solidarity among Muslims, countering threats aiming to undermine the world of Islam and vigilance of Islamic states as the only weapon to defeat the enemies and tackle their anti-Islam propaganda.

For his part, Mottaki said that as a member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and based on Article 4 of NPT, Iran has the right to access peaceful nuclear energy, adding that this inalienable right does not depend upon the agreement of a single country, but that it has to do with Iran's membership in the treaty.

Stressing Iran's continued cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he said, "Today, some countries intend to deprive Iran from its inalienable right and attempt to stabilize force and discrimination in international relations as accepted principles. This is while, they should realize that there is no way the Iranian nation will give up its inalienable right.

At the meeting, Adeniji referred to Iran's status in the region as quite important and said that NPT has clearly specified the limits and commitments to this end.

He added that Nigeria will support Iran's right to use nuclear technology as an NPT member state.

Underlining the significance and role of research and development for developing countries, the Nigerian minister said that to attain economic progress and promote their communities, such states should enjoy the right to research and use the up-dated knowledge, given that both are essential tools.
