View Full Version : Ghostface - The Pretty Toney Album

03-14-2006, 02:58 AM
What do you all think? It was the first Ghostface album I got (I'm kinda new to Wu), and it really got me into Ghostface. But I stopped listening to it after I got Supreme Clientele and Cuban Linx, those albums are classics. But Prett Toney is definetely not all bad, just not Ghostface at his very best. I still dig Holla, Biscuits, and Be This Way.

03-14-2006, 05:28 PM
It's defenitly not an album for a lot of users on this site... But personally I think it's a straight banger.. Great music... WAAAAY better than BPW in my opinion..

2.Biscuits - 5/5
3.Kunta Fly Shit - 4.5/5
4.Beat The Clock - 4.5/5
5.Metal Lungies - 5/5
6.Bathtub (Skit)
7.Save Me Dear - 4.5/5
8.Its Over - 5/5
9.Keisha's House (Skit)
10.Tush - 4/5
11.Last Night (Skit)
12.Holla - 5/5
13.Ghostface - 4/5
14.Be This Way - 4/5
15.The Letter (Skit)
16.Tooken Back - 4.5/5
17.Run - 5/5 (DOPE)
18.Love - 4.5/5

Overall, this album is dope. GFK comes correct lyrically, and the production is quite dope. Seems like something is left out, don't know exactly what but its a good drop by Ghost.

03-16-2006, 06:04 PM
Real soulful album with only like 3 not that great tracks. It's like an 8/10 album for me personally.

03-25-2006, 08:46 PM
It is interesting to see how Ghost has dealt with being on a commercial label. Def Jam fucked with this album so its hard to really digest this album as truely being representative of Ghost. I would call this Ghost's worst album. Too much of it sounds like a mixtape. Too much of it is too soft.

The standout tracks are "Biscuits", "Beat the Clock", and "Run"

The lowpoint is an absurd teaming with Missy Elliot on "Tush". Ghost's career lowpoint. This album is no classic, it almost couldn't be with Def Jam's filthy fingers, but it builds on Ghost's stellar career. Some ten years ago, I would never have predicted that Ghost would have one of the best solo careers going in the clan.

But it was all a progression period for Ghost. He learned a lot from his experience with this album. He made a Theodore unit album to compliment this album. And then he learned how to beat the system of being on a major record label that only cares about sales and has no ear for music. We see how Ghost does that with his next outing: Fishscale.

03-26-2006, 06:37 AM
seriously: why does everybody hate on tush? it's one of the best "commercial" hiphop songs ever if you ask me

03-26-2006, 06:55 AM
Personally not for me. A very poor album to me and easily one of the worst Wu Tang solo's to. Its very incoherent and very cheesy.

Biscuits and Beat the Clock are the only stand out tracks for me and the album is way too long and full of corny and cheesy beat jacking. Beats are very poor and for the most part the lyrics are uninspired. I don't listen to this more than once when it goes in rotation. Also the cd recording is very poor. The mid and higher levels have obviously been boosted which makes them come of very harsh.

On the positive side, the bass in some of the tracks is sick. Tush has an alternating bass line where the sub goes down into the lower regions of the bass, Ghostface has very hard hitting deep bass as does tooken back and save me dear, Biscuits has a highish bass line, Metal Lungies is punchy.

My score 2/5.

Damn man I respect everybody's opinion but shit some a y'all sleepin. This album is a banga man. Yeah it ain't Ghost's best, yeah it aint the best solo Wu-Tang album but that don't mean it isn't good. Run, Beat the Clock, Biscuits, and of course those dope ass soul beats. My moms is real into Soul and I been listenin to that shit for a long time so when Ghost samples that shit i'm right at home. Save Me Dear, Be That Way, and Holla are all ill. Shit Holla is prolly one of my top 10 Ghost tracks of all time.

Ok, this cd is average to me but its not wack, this is his wackest cd if u were to rank them. Its got bangers on there but it just dosent get that much replay value, the lyrics are nice I just dont like all these oldies tracks, I mean mostly every track was like that and they were beats that turned me off, the production was aiight though 3.5/5, lyrics 4.5/5, overall this is 4/5.It was nice but couldve been better...

03-26-2006, 10:54 AM
^^4/5 is alot for something that you are saying is average.

Lol i guess so, its a banger!

06-19-2006, 03:39 PM
Take away Ghostface, Tush and 2 more tracks (forgot the names) and you get a sick album. The album is sick anyway. But these tracks brought it down a little bit.

06-20-2006, 08:37 AM
its an overall near-classic effort IMO
i play this album all the way thru....Tush, Ghostface, and Tooken Back are ILL commercial tracks...i dunno what yall smokin'

06-20-2006, 09:47 AM
Tush is pretty good but Ghostface is not. That is my least favorite Ghostface track.

But I never said the album was bad. I love this album. I play it all the way through also.

Orion Nebulus
06-20-2006, 05:39 PM
The album is basically average.... I expected better. "buscuits", "run'' are trully the standout out tracks. I only wished the whole album were up to par with those songs I mentioned.

Leo Angel
06-22-2006, 07:50 AM
I don't like this album, BPW was waaaay better. Pretty Toney doesn't sound Wu-Tangish at all for me (besides Run and Biscuits). Anyway, there's a one song I really love and it's Be This Way^O^

08-02-2006, 12:12 PM
Damn man I respect everybody's opinion but shit some a y'all sleepin. This album is a banga man. Yeah it ain't Ghost's best, yeah it aint the best solo Wu-Tang album but that don't mean it isn't good. Run, Beat the Clock, Biscuits, and of course those dope ass soul beats. My moms is real into Soul and I been listenin to that shit for a long time so when Ghost samples that shit i'm right at home. Save Me Dear, Be That Way, and Holla are all ill. Shit Holla is prolly one of my top 10 Ghost tracks of all time.

yeah agree wit this review fully theres maybe two tracks i don't feel which is tush and tooken back which i think could of been replaced with either toney's money or that new splash or my guitar track

08-02-2006, 12:33 PM
Yeah def a sick album. Not every Ghost album has to be the same.

08-02-2006, 02:01 PM
all i gotta say is Kunta Fly Shit swallows a good lot of ghost's earlier work and previous work that that shit is RAWWWWW, the album is amazing, far above rap standards expecially in this day and age, and up to par with Wu standards even in the ealier days. I can see why Tush could have been a turn off for people, but that's it's only flaw, a girl gave me the album, censored, and i still bump that shit when i can, it gets better everyti me you hear it, i think it's equal to Fishscale, except fishscale has no weak tracks, but they're all average or slightly above and few real standouts, and P.tone has severally wack tracks, but phenominally good ones and several standouts so the same balance is maintained

08-02-2006, 09:54 PM
This is ghost's shittest album, but even his shittiest is ten times better than alot of the bullshit that comes out now *cough* 50 cent *cough*

Pretty Toney
08-04-2006, 05:50 PM
yeah yyeah wuttup thatīs m yalbum right there!!! itīs not my favorite wu album cuz i donīt suck my own dick but itīs quite cool.. new kinda style all that singin and rappin at the same time.. really inovative even tho ghost cries like a btch and shit gets anoying after a while.. haha just like me

have i told yaīll lateley how much i hate on a fam?

08-05-2006, 12:08 AM
4/5 in my opinion.. favorite track has always been Kunta Fly Shit, even though its mad short. And Holla has to be my favorite track that he completely rapped over an old beat...

Tush, Tooken Back, and Ghostface were the 3 average to bad tracks.. Tush especially. It wouldve been a 5 if they removed those and some skits, but he always has skits so...

To be 100% honest, I think this album shits all over fishscale.... fish scale was some... average shit to me.

When he gets some good production he can rip the shit to pieces... especially with soul samples.

08-07-2006, 10:18 PM
this is a good album... kunta fly sh!t shuda been longer itz real nice... but i can enjoy this album most of the way thru

best track Biscuits

its a weak point but it was better than what was coming out at the time

10-17-2006, 12:42 PM

10-26-2006, 02:03 AM
This album's blatantly a banger, i like pretty much everything on this album, plus Run is one of my favourite tracks in hip hop period, serious track, Ghost, Jada and Comp straight murdered that shit.

11-04-2006, 02:22 PM
poor and wack is the same thing. too many choices in the poll.

11-06-2006, 07:44 PM
is it any good cuz im gonna buy it and if i do ghost will be come the first wu solo member, that i have every copy of all his albums and he aint my fav wu general. he is like my third/ gza is my fav and i only have 3 albums by him.

11-06-2006, 10:49 PM
how you guys are saying this is a near-classic is beyond me; what the fuck would you rate fishscale (which is a near-classic)? or what in the fuck would you rate supreme clientele or ironman, fucking UBER SUPER CLASSICS? holy shit. i love the wu, but some of you think that they can do no wrong. this album is a solid 3/5

12-09-2006, 02:11 PM
Pretty Toney ** is ** near classic & I bumped it three times in a row riding around Shaolin this morning. It might be a New York thing, might be age... Ghost drops so much personal shit & knowledge here but it's ** ADULT **, not like XXX adult tho' Ghost is good for that too... Anyone not feeling this, come back in 10-15 years & listen again, you might hear shit differen. I'm not Sonnin' but Pretty Toney is near the goddamn top of its kind and almost nobody in hip-hop pushed the language, & the real details, feelings of adult hip-hop life as hard as Ghost, who's funny as shit too... what the hell, let's call it a CLASSIC-- leaves me wanting more & thankfully there is.

12-17-2006, 12:03 PM
i dont understand how some of you idiots can give this album anything higher than a 3.5 or say that it's average then give it a score of 4.5 like what the fuck are retarded?

if this album is a 4.5 what in the fuck is supreme clientele or ironman? like a 9/5? what about 36 chambers? 20/5

please...get off ghost's dick, he's my favorite artist but at least i can recognize that he can do bad sometimes

12-21-2006, 11:21 AM
:r yeah, that tush song is a banger. the video makes it even better.

12-23-2006, 02:18 PM
Had this for a long time and its still garbage. 3/10

01-13-2007, 07:20 PM
two classics lie on this album...holla and run, those two tracks immediately puts p. tone album up there, but not nearly as close as ironman

Ink Is My Drink
01-31-2007, 05:06 PM
was listening to it today and its a solid album not much more but im glad he made it jus a soulful album you know. i know it gets alot of hate but fuk im glad he made it

04-13-2007, 03:56 PM
man this shit is ill, to me this is ghosts 3rd best album(under ironman and supreme) but i wud put this over fishcale and more fish ne day as well as bulletproof.
im just listenin to this album again and shit tracks like Run, Metal Lungies, Holla, Biscuits, and Ghostface are all ill. Anyone else feelin this album more then others, cuz ive noticed its usually on the bottom of peoples lists.

04-13-2007, 04:18 PM
It's a good album. Most of all, all of ghosts albums are banging.

04-13-2007, 04:33 PM
really dope album. The only songs I dont listen to is Ghostface and love.

04-13-2007, 04:36 PM
I think its dope not his best at all but was pretty different from all his others Metal Lungies, Kunta Fly Shit, and Biscuits were ill

04-13-2007, 04:39 PM

04-13-2007, 05:47 PM
Love this album. I like all of Ghost's albums but yeah this one is underrated IMO. I like it more than More Fish and BPW.

Like the feel of the production...just really feels...I dunno, somethin vintage about it. Be This Way, Holla, Biscuits, Save Me Dear, Beat The Clock, Metal Lungies, It's Over, Run, and Tooken Back (imo) is tight too.

I even like Ghostface, the chorus is stupid as fuck, but the verses are nice. And that Last Night skit is dope too lmao, Ghost's flow is ill on that shit.

04-13-2007, 08:35 PM
Biscuits is some ill shit son!

04-14-2007, 08:33 AM
i don't know where all the hate is coming from when it comes down to this album.

This album has grown on me, in my previous posts I said it was kinda average but now I'll rate it a 4/5.

04-20-2007, 01:14 PM
first of all, Be This Way is straight up beautiful. Biscuits is crazy, made me feel Trife, and Run is absolutely crazy, but the real stand out joint is Holla (i've always been a huge delfonics fan). no one has ever done anything like that before. rapping over a song, not even a sample, that shit was dope. 8/10. equal to bulletproof

05-07-2007, 11:00 PM
it's a personal classic to me.

05-07-2007, 11:05 PM

05-08-2007, 05:21 PM
it's a personal classic to me.

Hard for me to understand why folks dont like this one...

Tush was one of the only songs I didnt like at first but even that one grew on me over time...I love the beat on that one...that off snap that drops in and out. Love is probably the only one I ever skip past but I still like it all in all.

Those that hate on this album have ants in your moufs and your earz....:mexico: :hippy:

Fuck...Be This Way, Run, Biscuits, Holla...ALL of em...

I love Pretty Toney. Very soulful album and also touches on classic wu with joints like "run", "metal lungies" and "be this way". My favorite track, probably of all time for Ghostface, is "Holla", I dont think anyone has ever rapped over an entire soul song like he did over Delfonic's "LaLaLa". The only weak song on this album is "Ghostface", just a wack and cheesy song, filler material. Overall, 9/10.

I like Biscuits and Beat the Clock

10-27-2007, 11:50 PM
Other then Missy song the album is fire.

10-30-2007, 06:07 PM
I think ive judged this album unfairly in the past, theres only 3 or 4 tracks that suck and the rest is fire, stuff like run, metal lungies, holla etc is straightup classic.

It's defenitly not an album for a lot of users on this site... But personally I think it's a straight banger.. Great music... WAAAAY better than BPW in my opinion..

BPW was straight wack.

Pretty Toney is a decent album though. Run is the best track Ghostface ever did...

one word (well, two): "It's Over." I've spent the last three days working (driving) all over Shaolin & this album KILLS front to back, serious "Fly Kunta Shit." it does speak to some older dude stuff but ya'll will get there too.

10-31-2007, 05:41 AM
i still think its his worst album though, bulletproof wallets definetly beats this.

Definitely a solid album from Ghost but still one of his worst, there are a few classic tracks, a couple bangers and some weak/average shit as well. It doesn't really flow together well as an album either, there seems to be a lack in structure plus the skits are weak. I'll throw in a track-by-track review too:

01 - Biscuits (4.5)
02 - Kunta Fly Shit (4)
03 - Beat The Clock (4)
04 - Metal Lungies (3.5)
05 - Save Me Dear (3.5)
06 - It's Over (4.5)
07 - Tush (3)
08 - Holla (4.5)
09 - Ghostface (1)
10 - Be This Way (4)
11 - Tooken Back (2)
12 - Run (5)
13 - Love (3)

Overall: 3.5/5

Stand outs are biscuits, be this way and run.

Be this way has some ill darts:
"SI the only place on the map they got the 30 dollar bill"
"No Trix we take from silly rabbits, yo feed them lead carrots"
"artillery heavy like a bunch of fat chicks"

i laugh out loud whenever wu mentions fat chicks. like meth on box in hand "like a fat bitch in spandex free whilly"

First of all, this album isn't a classic, but it is a banger.I grew up on soul music so alot of the tracks on the album I was lovin'.
Beat the clock :is Ghost at his finest and the beat on this joint is crazy.
Save me dear: is another favorite(good soul shit)
It's over and biscuits were two more bangers. This ain't clientele and definately not ironman, but it is a banger....3.5/5

12-19-2008, 03:10 PM

first album on def jam it had to hit a wide fan base at the same time distorting the wu-element big mistake.

no matter how hard ghost tore up beats with ill flows no feat by any wu- member
save for TRIFE theodore unit , it wasnt just sounding on point.
its a banger but not a classic .

Classic to me. It may be the most cheesy and soulful, but its the album he always meant to make. He doesn't care for the RZA/martial arts shit that much. He fits perfectly between radio meets underground in my opinon. The samples and skits that are cheesy are pure Ghostface and I love 'em. "He bowlingball head, He bowlingball head"

Huggasaurus Sex

this is a great album in spite of its unevenness, particularly in its scatter shot second half. while "holla" is striking in its passion and juxtaposition of rap lyrics laid directly over a classic soul record, the track that follows it, "ghostface," is noteworthy only for possibly being the worst eponymous rap song of all time.

the thing i like best about this album is its exploration of the relationship between the gangster life and hip-hop, and not the trite glorification of or simple exposition about hood violence. in kunta fly he gives us his viewpoint during a stickup and follows that with another first person perspective story but this time he's in the middle of a rap battle. metal lungies makes the connection explicit when he compares his rhymes to gun bullets, his mouth the gun. the analogy reaches its apex on the emotionally-laden holla. then i feel there are some tracks where, whether intentional or not, ghost is metaphorically talking about his relationship to the rap game (as it had been at the time): in tooken back, he's looking for forgiveness and reacceptance from one who once loved him (mainstream hip hop listeners), and in run we're told at the end that he's being chased for an overdue summons for a failure to merge (with the trends of mainstream hip-hop). i'm sure not everyone sees it this way but even without the conceit it's still a highly enjoyable hip-hop album.

oh and save me dear is my top candidate for the most endearing love song in wu's entire catalog.

one last thing, everyone knows about BPW's problems with sample clearances but it's worth remembering that pretty toney suffered just as badly:

gorilla hood (original version)
paychecks (original version)
my guitar

these are all sick tracks which leaked out around the time PT was released but unfortunately contained samples which couldn't be cleared. i'm a hypothetical thinking mofo and i've always felt that if BPW and PT had been released as they'd originally been intended and if FS/MF had been released as 1 album with all the bullshit tracks cut then we'd be looking at 5 straight ghost albums in 10 years all with credible claims to being classics in their own right.

For me this is his best album, can bump from start to finish without skipping a track.

it's a dope album, replace "Tooken Back", "Tush" and "Ghostface" with "Guerilla Hood", "Paychecks", "The Drummer" and "The Splash (No, No, No)" and it's extremely solid.
