I also predicted the Yanks and the Phillies to meet up in the World Series from the start of the season. But i'm gonna roll with the Phillies on this one. I hate the Yanks, lol. They so cocky and after that strikeout to win the ALCS, it just seemed like they was just glad to go to the World Series, especially with A-Rod on the post-interview. @ $200+ mill, all they care about is the money. Philly is more hungry to repeat as champs.

Phillies in 6.

CC to me is not worth the money he will get, but Lee certainly will be.

Yankees 2009 Champions I Love It Gave Super Big Cheer For Matsui To Give Him A Proper Send Off Since He Probably Wont Be Back. Obviously Jeter, Mo, And Pettite Got The Biggest Rise Out Of The Crowd You Knew Jeter Was Coming Because You Could Hear Derek Jeter Chants For Blocks Before He Even Got To Us. On Another Note I Feel Like Venting About The National League Not Adopting The DH. It's Ridiculous It's 2009 I Think It's Time To Come To The Conclusion That Having The Pitcher Hitting Is A Joke. Why Do You Want An Automatic Out In The Lineup It Make No Sense.

All The Oh But Theres More Strategy Involved Is Non Sense What Am I Watching Chess. It's Much More Exciting To See A Pitcher Struggling Have To Get Out Of A Jam Against Real Hitters By Battling Then To Walk Someone To Get To The Pitcher And Have Someone Bail You Out.

And More On The Strategy Bullshit Argument Oh My God What A Genius He Had To Make A Double Switch Like Thats So Complicated. Fact Most Coaches Who Have Managed In Both Leagues Think It's Harder To Manage In The American League With Having To Get Navigate The Line Ups The American League Offer.

The Whole Tradionalist Angle Is Lame Too Just People Who Cant Admit That The League Can Put In A New Rule To Actually Make The Game Better. They Just Refuse To See The Truth.

After The World Series This Has Been On My Mind Both Leagues Should Have The Same Rules But That Will Never Happen I'm Just Glad My Favorite Team Plays In The American League.

--Report: Longtime Yankees voice Sheppard retiring

NEW YORK (AP)—Bob Sheppard has no intentions of returning to his longtime job as the public address announcer at Yankee Stadium, MLB.com reported Thursday.

Sheppard, who is 99, hasn’t worked a game since late in the 2007 season due to illness.

“I have no plans of coming back,” Sheppard told the Web site in a telephone interview. “Time has passed me by, I think. I had a good run for it. I enjoyed doing what I did. I don’t think, at my age, I’m going to suddenly regain the stamina that is really needed if you do the job and do it well.”

When contacted by The Associated Press, Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said the team had no announcement or comment at this time.

Famous for his distinct and resonant tones, Sheppard became the PA announcer at the old Yankee Stadium in 1951. Decades later, Reggie Jackson gave him the nickname “The Voice of God.”

Sheppard has called out names from Joe DiMaggio to Mickey Mantle to Derek Jeter(notes) over the years. For the final game at the old park in 2008, he recorded a greeting to fans and the introduction of New York’s starting lineup.

Paul Olden took over as the public address announcer at the new Yankee Stadium this year in Sheppard’s absence. Jim Hall, a longtime backup, filled in for Sheppard late in 2007 and last year.

But when Jeter steps to the plate, it’s still a recording of Sheppard’s voice that rings out: “Now batting for the Yankees, No. 2, Deh-rick Jee-tuh.”

Sheppard told MLB.com that he doubts “very, very much” that he’ll be able to resume his duties for even one game next season.

“It’s not just the two hours or three hours of baseball,” he said. “It’s the trip, the preparation, the trip home, and a long, long day. I think at my age, it’s time to accept the fact that I had a great run. A great run. And I only made a few mistakes along the way.”

Why Is This Not Stickied? Yankees Making Moves They Resigned Nick Johnson Who I Always Like Fingers Crossed He Doesnt Get Injured But For 1 Mill Cheaper Then Matsui They Probably Should Of Just Kept Him.

Yankees Also Get Javy Vazquez And Boone Logan For Melky Caberera Mike Dunn An Arodys Vizcaino. I Dont Really Like This Trade Javy Was A Yankee And Sucked Already I Really Felt He Wasnt Mentally Up To It.

I Understand He'll Be The 4th Starter But He's A Worse Version Of Aj Burnett Who Can Drive You Crazy At Times. I Get Nervous Just Thinking Of Vazquez Against A Power Hitting American League Team Already. Melky Was Gritty And Had A Flair For The Dramatic But If They Bring Back Damon Now I Wont Mind. Atleast It's Only One Year But Then They Should Of Just Kept Melky And Went For Sheets Or Someone Else.

NEW YORK -- Jay-Z and a business partner are suing slugger David Ortiz (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3748), claiming the Boston Red Sox (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=bos) star named his Dominican nightclub after the mogul's chain of 40/40 clubs.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Manhattan Federal Court, accuses Ortiz of calling his Santo Domingo club Forty-Forty in the hopes of trading on the rap star's fame.
The suit seeks over $5 million in damages and for Ortiz to forfeit any use of the 40/40 name.
Jay-Z's string of bars can be found in Manhattan, Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
"David Ortiz is fully aware of Plaintiff's Manhattan 40/40 club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions before he opened his Infringing Forty/Forty club," the lawsuit states.
The clubs are named after the feat of hitting 40 homers and stealing 40 bases in one season.
A message seeking comment was left Thursday night with SFX Baseball, the agency that represents Ortiz.

That division has been back n forth so far. Gotta think the Phillies will get their shit together sooner or later and take a grip on it. Mets started in first, dropped to last, two weeks later back in first, a week and a half later in last and right now we're in third 1/2 behind Philly, 2.5 behind Atlanta, but now that Maine and Perez are out of the rotation we've turned a corner. Elmer Dessens has turned into a really nice set up man. Frankie has been erratic at times, but our biggest problem right now is what to do with Beltran when he comes back. Pagan has been our most clutch hitter this season and plays a great center and Frenchy is on fire. It certainly sets us up to get a quality starter at the deadline. We're buying at the break.

R.I.P. to George Steinbrenner

--NEW YORK – George Steinbrenner, who rebuilt the New York Yankees into a sports empire with a mix of bluster and big bucks that polarized fans all across America, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.

Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details.

His death was the second in three days to rock the Yankees. Bob Sheppard, the team's revered public address announcer from 1951-07, died Sunday at 99.

For more than 30 years, Steinbrenner lived up to his billing as "the Boss," a nickname he earned and clearly enjoyed as he ruled with an iron fist.

He was known for feuds, clashing with Yankees great Yogi Berra and hiring manager Billy Martin five times while repeatedly clashing with him. But as his health declined, Steinbrenner let sons Hal and Hank run more of the family business.

Steinbrenner was in fragile health for years, resulting in fewer public appearances and pronouncements. Yet dressed in his trademark navy blue blazer and white turtleneck, he was the model of success: The Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants after his reign began in 1973.

He appeared at the new Yankee Stadium just four times: for the opener in April 2009, for the first two games of last year's World Series and for this year's homer opener, when captain Derek Jeter and manager Joe Girardi went to his suite and personally delivered his seventh World Series ring.

"He was very emotional," said Hal Steinbrenner, his father's successor as managing general partner.

Till the end, Steinbrenner demanded championships. He barbed Joe Torre during the 2007 AL playoffs, then let the popular manager leave after another loss in the opening round. The team responded last year by winning another title.

Steinbrenner had fainted at a memorial service for NFL star Otto Graham in 2003, appeared weak in 2006 at the groundbreaking for the new Yankee Stadium and later became ill while watching his granddaughter in a college play.

In recent times, Steinbrenner let sons Hal and Hank run more of the family business. Still, the former Big Ten football coach took umbrage when others questioned his fitness.

"No, I did not have a stroke. I am not ill. I work out daily," Steinbrenner said in 2006. "I'd like to see people who are saying that to come down here and do the workout that I do."

When Steinbrenner headed a group that bought the team on Jan. 3, 1973, he promised absentee ownership. But it didn't turn out that way.

Steinbrenner not only clashed with Berra for more than a decade but paid to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield, deriding the future Hall of Famer as "Mr. May" in 1985 after poor performances. Berra's wife, Carmen, said Tuesday her husband was at a golf event in Pennsylvania and was expected to comment later in the day.

While he liked to appear stern, Steinbrenner could poke fun at himself. He hosted "Saturday Night Live," clowned with Martin in a commercial and chuckled at his impersonation on "Seinfeld."

He gave millions to charity, often with one stipulation, that no one be told who made the donation.

The Yankees paid off for him, too, with their value increasing more than 100-fold from the $8.7 million net price his group paid in January 1973. He freely spent his money, shelling out huge amounts for Jeter, Reggie Jackson, Alex Rodriguez, Torre and others in hopes of yet another title.

"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing," Steinbrenner was fond of saying. "Breathing first, winning next."

All along, he envisioned himself as a true Yankee Doodle Dandy. It was fitting: George Michael Steinbrenner III was born on the Fourth of July, in 1930.

Added up, he joined the likes of Al Davis, Charlie O. Finley, Bill Veeck, George Halas, Jack Kent Cooke and Jerry Jones as the most recognized team owners in history.

Steinbrenner's sporting interests extended beyond baseball.

He was an assistant football coach at Northwestern and Purdue in the 1950s and was part of the group that bought the Cleveland Pipers of the American Basketball League in the 1960s.

He was a vice president of the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1989-96 and entered six horses in the Kentucky Derby, failing to win with Steve's Friend (1977), Eternal Prince (1985), Diligence (1996), Concerto (1997), Blue Burner (2002) and the 2005 favorite, Bellamy Road.

To many, though, the Yankees and Steinbrenner were synonymous.

His fans applauded his win-at-all-costs style. His detractors blamed him for spiraling salaries and wrecking baseball's competitive balance.

Steinbrenner never managed a game, as Ted Turner once did when he owned the Atlanta Braves, but he controlled everything else. When he thought the club's parking lot was too crowded, Steinbrenner stood on the pavement — albeit behind a van, out of sight — and had a guard personally check every driver's credential.

Steinbrenner made no apologies for bombast and behavior, even when it cost him dearly.

He served two long suspensions: He was banned for 2 1/2 years for paying self-described gambler Howie Spira to dig up negative information about Winfield, and for 15 months following a guilty plea in federal court for conspiring to make illegal campaign contributions during the Watergate era.

"I haven't always done a good job, and I haven't always been successful," Steinbrenner said in 2005. "But I know that I have tried."

- A Giant is gone: Bobby Thomson dies at age 86

The Giant who hit the home run for the ages now belongs to them.

As first reported by the New York Daily News, Bobby Thomson the man who hit "The Shot Heard 'Round The World" to win the 1951 NL pennant died "peacefully" at his Georgia home on Monday night. He was 86 years old and had been in poor health.

Thomson played for five teams over 15 seasons, hit 264 career home runs and was a three-time All-Star. But he ensured his name will always be remembered on Oct. 3, 1951, the day he hit his dramatic home run off Brooklyn's Ralph Branca to send the Giants to a 5-4 victory that earned them entry into the 1951 World Series. It has often been called the greatest home run of all time.

Thomson's blast landed in the left-field stands at the Polo Grounds and capped a four-run ninth-inning rally that was emblematic of the Giants' season. The team trailed the Dodgers by 13 1/2 games on Aug. 11, but went 37-7 to finish the season and force a three-game tiebreaker series with their crosstown rivals. Thomson's home run to win the decisive third game was so big that it basically made the ensuing World Series a historical footnote. (Who ever remembers that the Giants lost to the Yankees in six games?)

Though a 2001 Wall Street Journal story alleged that the moment was a product of stolen signs, Thomson never admitted to knowing what was coming from Branca.

But that's neither here nor there as today is a day to remember the man who experienced baseball's ultimate feeling before players like Carlton Fisk, Kirk Gibson, Kirby Puckett and Aaron Boone(notes) ever did. There are undoubtedly going to be a lot of nostalgic baseball fans reminiscing about that game and even more "The Giants win the pennant!" impressions going on over the next few days.

And rightfully so. Check out the magic moment once again.

^^Lol. Yea the Mets, Cubs, Dodgers normally have big payrolls. The Cubs are at 140 mil. And 20 games under .500. The Mets are going nowhere. The Dodgers are trying to sneak into the wild-card. Smart trades & good scouting should be the recipe for success. But the Cubs signed Milton Bradley. They gave Alfonso Soriano an 8 year deal. Yes, 8 years, when 5 should of been enough. Dumb moves like these are why the Cubs are going on 103 years of no title.

One thing I like about Texas is that with Nolan Ryan's philosophy of no pitch counts, no 7, 8, 9 guys, it's old school baseball. Baseball that you're taught as a kid to know and love. There's no bullshit with this Texas team and they should be able to handle San Fran after Lincecum.

I do believe that I was the one who a year or two ago told everyone on this board that once the Rangers get pitching they will be a team to reckon with. Sucks that it bit me in the ass though.

--Former Tigers manager, Sparky Anderson, is seriously ill.

In a message released today by his family, it was learned that the 76-year-old Hall of Fame manager who guided the Tigers to their 1984 World Series championship "has been placed in the care of hospice at his home in Thousand Oaks, California, for complications resulting from dementia." Included in the announcement was an expression of gratitude.

"The Anderson family — wife Carol, sons Lee and Albert, and daughter Shirley Englebrecht — wishes to express appreciation to all friends and fans for the support and kindness they have shown throughout Sparky's career and retirement," according to the message.

"The family is particularly grateful for the respect for privacy the national and local media have demonstrated during this trying period.

"All requests for future updates should be directed to family spokesman Dan Ewald." Ewald is the Tigers' former public relations director and longtime friend of Anderson's.

In the same year in which the Tigers' community of fans and followers lost beloved broadcaster Ernie Harwell, this, too, is a sad development.

Anderson is the winningest Tigers' manager of all time with 1,331 victories. He was the first manager to win World Series in both the National and American Leagues, accomplishing the feat with the Cincinnati Reds before winning it all with the Tigers.

With 2,194 victories, he ranks sixth on the all-time list for managers.

Hired in 1979, Anderson remained the Tigers' manager through the 1995 season, but has been a yearly visitor to the Detroit area in his retirement to attend the various functions that benefit CATCH, the foundation he founded in 1987 to improve the quality of life for pediatric patients at Children's Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital.

Anderson attended the 1984 Tigers' reunion at Comerica Park in September 2009, at which time he looked at the former players that had gathered for the occasion and said "think about this now, there will be four or five of these guys together again, maybe, but never all together again.

"I'm 75. I know I ain't going to make it." At the time, it was inescapably evident that Anderson was frail — a condition which became even more obvious during his 2010 visit to the Detroit area for CATCH's summer golf outing. But, true to his respect for his place of honor in baseball, he went to Cooperstown to attend the Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremonies before returning home to California.

Last month, however, his health took a turn for the worse.

Now, unfortunately, it has taken another.

Lets Talk A Little Yankees Baseball This Has Been One Of The Worst Offseason In Recent History I'm Starting To Really Question Brain Cashman. The Whole Debacle With Soriano And Him Not Wanting Him But The Steinbrenners Over Ruled Not Looking Good. With That Said I Liked The Move The Bullpen Should Be A Huge Strength. The Starting Rotation Looking Real Weak If Pettite Dont Come Back. CC Will Be CC Hopefully Hughes Progresses A Little More But Really Can You Ask For More The 18 Wins You Got To Take That If He Can Duplicate It. AJ Burnett Has To Stop Acting Like The Second Coming Of Ollie Perez And Learn How To Pitch. Hopefully Bounce Back Years From Arod Jeter And Tex. I Also Dont Get Why Russell Martin Has The Starting Job It Should Be Up For Grabs With A Competition Against Montero. All In All I Was Dissapointed But I Feel They'll Still Get The Wild Card Hopefully Can Get A Good Pitcher At The Trade Deadline.

Without the innings restrictions this season, I think Hughes is going to be a real gem. Had they not bitched around with him last year, he would've probably had a few more wins and you know what; he slowed down.. but only when they started playing those gay typical new Yankee pitcher rules. It's fuckin' disgusting. Ivan Nova I would like to see get a few starts this year again. Let's start bringing up the new blood again. Let's try to hit another Jeter, Bernie, Mo, Pettite, Posada class. It's worth a try to atleast give the young guns a shot. We need another shot of adrenaline in to this team, I know there's a young kid out there with the life we need. I think the starting Catchers should be up for grabs also but just as long as Posada isn't in there man. That arm is done but I still love the bat he's still a doubles machine. AJ needs to fucking go him and A-Rod to the Marlins for Josh Johnson straight up ahahahaa. LOL @ The Young Bosses vs Cashman. It's not looking good. His moves have me baffled. Soriano better fuckin' show up under the NY lights. Tampa is a real laid back, easy place to preform. Speaking of which LOL @ Tampa getting Manny and Damon. I think they take a step back, but still stay in the race somewhat. Boston is going to be tough this year, they won't have a freak injuries year like last. LOL @ us getting Andru Jones too. Oh boy..hahaha.

You know it's never to early to talk about the greatest professional sports franchise in the entire known quadroverse.

Olive Oil Goombah
03-07-2011, 07:03 PM
They Yankees have a huge advantage in being able to compete every year, you can't deny that.

You can buy a competitive team, but not a championship.

Still, there is a reason why team like KC, Pitt and such NEVER compete. Part of the reason is organizational, because teams like Minnesota, Cleveland, Milwaukee can compete but it ebbs and flows.

One of the main reason the Indians were so competitive in the 90s was the new stadium and huge revenues from merchandise sales and always selling out.

But they still couldnt afford to keep the mega free agents. They lost ever single one...Thome, Belle, Ramirez, Sabathia and Lee(both traded but both would have left)...we are talking Hall of Famers and Cy Young winners.

It also depends on the owner in mid to small market teams.

Dick Jacobs bought low and sold the team at a premium. The Dolans, who also fucked up the Knicks, are alot cheaper and won't spend as much.

But there is a way to win by developing young talent and locking them up for 5-6 years and making a run, than trading them before their contract expires and getting top prospects.

GZAjector

It is a damn shame about my boy D-Train. I remember when Dontrelle was a young gun with the city of Miami on his back, he was the fucking man down here, he could have been in the molds of Dan Marino, D-Wade and Michael Irvin with the talent he had early, but he just fell off. Even in the World Series year, he had started to decline and we saw signs of his future failures, couldn't keep it over the plate, lost his movement, got rocked. Thus he was coming outta the penn in the World Series. D-Train had it and he was made to be a SUPERSTAR, but the league just caught up to his shit. I wouldn't mind a Dontrelle comeback but it seems bleak. The guy maybe just got in over his head early and couldn't handle the pressure of being a great pitcher. Sad story indeed, the guy REALLY loves the game and you can tell he's a natural.
