If I tried to put it into words I would already do damage. I have to move and manifest myself into the world for HipHop to be in effect...its barely seen with the physical eye

but if you want essays I would suggest hittin up the temple of HipHop!

here's my take on it. im not typing no essay cuz im too lazy for that.

what does it mean to define something? to determine the beginning of something and its end.

hiphop's begins but does not end with:

MCing
DJing
Break dancing
Graffiti

these things deal with what you do. then there's:

slang
fashion
demeanor(splng?)(the way you walk, facial expressions, how you have sex)

these deal with who you are, your personality.

you can take these elements anywhere and hiphop will be present. if you're not dealing with these elements then its not hiphop.

for example

is elton john's "circle of life" a hiphop song? what about berry white's "cant get enough of you love baby", or whitney houston's "exhale"?

if not then that means that there are rules to what hiphop is and isnt but i dont think we ever sit down and talk about what those rules are.

Man, WE WAS READING THAT ESSAY DOWN IN OUR SQL AS AN OBBLIGATORY READING FOR U.S. CULTURE!!!!!!

My definition: Hip-Hop is the reason why people don't understand me... Cause I don't regard bubblegum shitty r'n'b as true hip-hop...

Hip Hop is as elemental as Earth, Wind and Fire
an essential necessity in keeping a rhythmatic heart inspired
an inexplicable drive that keeps the soul alive
uniting many under one culture on the strength of itís Vibe
itís when beat, rhythm and rhyme become the culmination of one
the recognition of unisex soldiers moving to the beat of itís drum
itís the roots of a true lyricist whoís message becomes itís tree
yielding seeds of creative expressionism that are personified by the streets
itís the invisible magnetic force that became love at first sound
what political figureheads prayed would be lost, until their suburbs found
itís the essence of what trapped Rakim between the lines
bridging the gap, like the Pharaoh Nas, of would be distant minds
itís the shared DNA between a Poet and an Emcee
the drive behind the involuntary head nodding of a true listenee (listener)
it's the very air that I breath setting a caged spirit free
the significance of something as simplistic as mic check one, two, three

It can't be put in words. It's our lifestyle, but at the same time we keeping it street. Keeping it street doesn't mean bustin' guns 24/7 but we got our own struggle and our grind. It's our lifestyle. Watch and learn. Better yet....live and learn. Peace.

Peace Dae Ja Nae

I know the nine elements but four get all the credit
If you think it's just a bunch of music please forget it
Leave it alone because it's my spirit expressing the struggle
In present times young minds use it to make money as a hustle
I wrestle with the thought that we're geting rapped of our souls
Big businesses are getting the profits while we stumble over coals
Hip Hop is non-stop and always elevating with new situations
It's Break Dancing, Emceeing, Scratching, Graf but more for tasting
Street Entrepenurialism, Slang, Dress, Knowledge, and Beat Boxing
The world's watching and copying the good and the bad the street's watching
As the children copy the flaws that have been passed down the generations
Please listen to the Elders that will lead us to a New Black Nation
But back to Hip Hop, a tool that can be instrimental to the wise
I see Hip Hop and more in the gleaming stars of little Black babies eyes

Peace blackwisdom

Thank you Da' for the words. I know that you don't mind the add on.

A side note:

Hip Hop is a product of the expression of the oppressed Black youth of America's impoverished inner cities (period).

It is embraced by the entire world for the very same reason that every other Black thing is embraced. It's born of the Original Blackwoman and Original Blackman, and everyone wants a piece of that Original flava (period).

Everybody wants to be a Nigga but Nobody wants to be a Nigga.

HipHop to me is being real with yourself and the way you express yourself through the five elements. If you arent being real to yourself and not trying to fit anybody elses mold and truly love the music and appreciate the other elements than you are hip hop. HipHop music is expressing the way/or the culture and the community you live and your individual creativity through rap. Doesnt matter what the beats sound like, doesnt matter what the subject matter is if its from your own mind and views than its hip hop. Its not hip hop when its changing your perspective and trying to put yourself in a cookie cutter mold to fit the bill of whats hot right now.

people ignore the good underground shit acting like its amateur bull shit cuz its not on the radio. and also, people hating cuz you dont care for ice cube or dr. dre when everyone has their own choice, and either way they are inferior in a very obvious way.
