Behind the Walls of Ward 54
They're overmedicated, forced to talk about their mothers instead of Iraq, and have to fight for disability pay. Traumatized combat vets say the Army is failing them, and after a year following more than a dozen soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital, I believe them.

Washington - Before he hanged himself with his bathrobe sash in the psychiatric ward at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Spc. Alexis Soto-Ramirez complained to friends about his medical treatment. Soto-Ramirez, 43, had been flown out of Iraq five months before then because of chronic back pain that became excruciating during the war. But doctors were really worried about his mind. They thought he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving with the 544th Military Police Company, a unit of the Puerto Rico National Guard, the kind of unit that saw dirty, face-to-face combat in Iraq.

That's good for him, but I think it's a real big risk!

And not to mention the innocent foriegn civilians that U.S. Troops put to death on the daily....

I would, I am.

Really?...why?

damaja
04-28-2006, 11:03 AM
I am joining in the tank regiment, so I'll have less of a chance of getting shot in the face. And not in the US military, so less chance again. And Iraq will be almost over by the time I am trained and ready to deploy. Not like they'll be sending hundreds of tank crews over there. I'd still go though.

damaja
04-28-2006, 11:08 AM
Yeah, I hope they are ready to roll by the time I am trained.

Anyone who joins now is crazy. WW3 is about to jump off. I don't thinkI want any part of that.

damaja
04-28-2006, 11:10 AM
Well, yeah to be honest. If you join the Army and don't want action, then you're stupid. I don't want to die, but I want excitement and action.

Exactly, I doubt that shit's really gonna happen, but if it does...I'll be there. I know people who've been in the military (and some still in it), they're not dead.

i don't tend to talk about poliltics cuz it gives me a headache any way..

i think you only should sign up when you're sure 100% that you're on the right side, not killing innocents or helping the "bad guys" or something. but to be objective, if you ever goin' to join the Military, you should make sure that you don't fall into what others before you fell into + don't allow s*** -if you can- happens...i think..

Aqua Luna
04-28-2006, 11:17 AM
No no no!!

Why don't we all just protest the militaries and end the violence!

I like that idea a lot better!

They can't make all of us fight their wars can they??

Os3y3ris
04-28-2006, 11:20 AM
See, avoiding the inevitable conflict is only a part of it. If shit jumps off to the point where my home is actually in danger, then I have to fight. But I won't be a part of any group thats trying to START this shit.

my cousin just finished boot camp for the navy seals to be a weap specialist. so he'll know every gun warhead etc. gets his college funds and all. his parents cool so , hey.

me nah. i use to think it be just a mind game like hazing in college but the endingds be doifferent. dead not gradiuating.

anyway the military is like pawns on the chess board of geo-global political economy.

f the military.

In around year and a half I'll be called in my country's army... and if I denied, I couldn't return ever more, as a deserter. So I guess I'll go.

there's a good side and a bad side to every career choice. it depends on if you think the positives are worth the negatives. nothing is gauranteed.

as for myself, to hell with the military. im not gonna be fighting someone elses money and power war and screw that bootcamp junk.

as far as invasion of our country, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

well i have to join the army, gotta do my turkish national service, i can pay 5000 euro's and go for a month, which i aint gonna pay. i dont have to do it, i can jus get out of being a turkish citizen (i got 2 passports one turkish one english) cause im no refugee i was signed up for turkish citizenship which is the reason why i gotta do it. If i dont and get out of it i cant own land in turkey, dont wanna lose that. so 15 months of bullcrap is wat im gonna be forced with doing. with the ways its going with the kurdish terrorists rising again im fuked. and because im born in england they aint gonna like me there so they will send me to the east were most likely i will either get shot or step on a mine.
my cousin came back couple days ago he was a commando, he said that he had 10 friends and 8 of them were killed in combat. and turkey aint even in a war. its all bullshit i dont want to go, why should i go fight for a country that hasnt given me anything, then again i wouldnt fight for england cause well the army's nothing compared to the turkish army and well it wouldnt seem right for me.

Aqua Luna

^^^ I haven't experienced that type of cohercian out of the military in Amerikkka.....well at least not in my time.

We do have the draft over here and I think it can be implemented at any time...refusal to comply with the draft and go to service resluted in prison back in the day.

I think that forcing someone to fight for something they don't agree with is horrible...It's freaking slavery!

Croatia. No war anymore, but still a compulsory military service.

Shit, I got friend with belarussian and russian citizenship. He already deserted belarussian army, and now he's gonna desert even russian (well, I understand him for that, they would send him to Chechnya as a deserter, to be blown in pieces in a terrorist attack). So, now he can't visit his family in Belarus, cause their president has death penalty for treason.

Shit, the world would be much nicer if no one country wouldn't have reason to keep an army.

damaja

I think the compulsory military service is good, there should definately have it in my country. But it should not apply to people overseas, like, if they'd live outside that country for more than a certain time, then you can't call them up.

its a good thing to serve ur govt? even if u know they do evils?

nah thats totally flawed.
its a good thing to help the people.

There are some ways to avoid military service in turkey, first to be physically or mentally unfit. Also gays are not allowed in the army, i dont kno how they would tell.
I do see a lot of benefits with national service, it would disipline a lot of the fuked up individuals. It works in turkey but its jus a form of slavery to be honest they beat the crap out of the soldiers. sumtimes i heard they purposly shoot you if you disrespect the flag, or the commanders. I heard stories of commanders beating a soldier close to death after they spotted him smoking while the national anthem was being played.
For me there is no choice one day i gotta do it, cause my family have a lot of land and buildings in turkey, and if i dont have a turkish citizenship i cant claim this land. Why should the stupid turkish government take away my land fuk dat, its only 15 months i can survive jus gotta pray that cause i kno english they make me military police in the touristic regions. then it would be like a long holiday, thats the easiest job. but i got a long way until i go, after i finish uni and get settled. The bastards can wait.

Heh, I'd gladly be a pussy if it meant no army. Bring on the age of pacifism and all that. It's bad enough being a slave to the government in everyday life, without having to kill people for them on top of things. Thankfully mandatory army services left British waters quite some time ago, I feel for the people that still gotta do it though.
I can understand why the army might appeal to people, it offers a lot. But there's always a price to pay, ain't nothing free.
I'd never get in the army though, I don't take orders and I'd fail the piss test.

damaja
05-01-2006, 06:08 PM
Look at the shape of most of the youths in this country, they need kicking in the head! Mandatory service would certainly straighten them out and make them respect authority.

Stop thinking of the Army as a totally political thing, I'm going to go all sorts if far out places, do all sorts of cool shit, and have stories that most of you will never have. It'll be a great experience and the best years of my life.

Frontal Lobotomy
05-01-2006, 06:32 PM
I see your point. But like, the Army will always be political, the only difference is that when you're in the army you give up the right to question politics, you just take orders, yanno?
Seeing the world is certainly a plus, but I figure I'll see more of the world if I do it on my own without the restrictions and the mandatory this and that.
