idd, it's very easy to start with, you'll get the hang of it very quick. I'm using it 5 years now for hiphp and drumnbass. Don't let people disencourage you to start using it. A lot will say the soundquatity sucks, but that's all up to yourself. eq is the key to clean sound, not the program.

(feel free to check out some of my drumnbasstunes @ http://www.emblem-x.tk)

reason 3 is a decent piece of kit, if you dont know your way arround a studio tho, you are going to get pretty lost, use cubase with reason and then it all comes down too you imagination, you can make some seriously sick shit. i even think alot of the pro's use reason. and yer a keyboard is needed,

yeah you need a midi keyboard or its going to be even more difficult.
you can actually use reason with out one, but that shit is time consuming and hard as fuck.

You can use sample, the best way to use sample with reason is with recycle (another propellerhead program), but you can use sample without that.

And a midi keyboard is not necessary, it can help alot, but it depends on your style of production, if you mostly use sample and just do the bass and the drums by yourself not having a midi keyboard is not a problem.

Reason 3.0 is the best program out right now

lol yall talking about midi

so old

use reason with a keyboard that has a USB bus

its much better

and yes you can use it on a mac

Sonar is another good program that you can make beats on - its more difficult though
and you would need extra stuff like vst and dxi pieces

can't record audio on reason yet

get 2 turntables to make beats on first

Kinetic is another but its difficult. Iam used to live instruments and keyboards. But it depends what production you want to make. Fruity Loops 5 is alright cause you can always import other stuff.

i'm using FL Studio and i'm also trying to learn Reason 3, but it's difficult and i don't really like it. FL is much easier for beginner and it has tons of plugins, so it's good enuf for PC.

Im always hearing people people talk bad about Fruity Loops. Usually the people are too stupid to understand how advanced the software has become. If someone like JustBlaze is using it to make a beat then its not just for novices. I own reason 3.0 but cant advantage of it since I dont have any type of midi device or usb keyboard. Reason has some pretty insane features and replacements for studio equiptment. I came a across the manual I think or maybe it was a book on reason and it was almost as long as the US tax code.

The moral of my post is that people's beats/music shouldnt be judged based on their choice of software, just as an artist shouldnt be criticized for using a a certain brush or tool to make their art

^ I agree it isn't what you use but how it sounds in the end that's important, however to me there does seem to be a fair amount of ignorance in the FL community, by which I mean that people just seem to quote that '9th uses FL, Just Blaze uses FL, so I don't need anything else' It's just kind of sad that a lot of them seem to be oblivious to other developments in music production software and hardware that they might even find more productive and creative then FL, theres a lot of it out there.

You say you use FL, but have no controller, so you can't get the best out of reason... why not control Reason with FL? go check out the Rewire protocol.

Your kindding right? its exactly the same, the only difference with USB keyboards/controllers is that you don't need an additional MIDI interface to get the messages into your computer. Your still just sending MIDI note#'s and CC#'s, some of the most advanced hardware controllers, synths and samplers are still being manufactured with traditional MIDI connections today! old indeed, but still powerfull and extremely usefull!

Here are a selection of programs capable of 'beat-making' I suggest you try out the demo versions where available, as no one can really tell you what the best program will be for you, and the amount you want to spend will be a deciding factor in which route you take.

Once you've played around with these demo's for a while you will no doubt gravitate towards one of them and get a better understanding of how you prefer to work in the context of current DAW functionality.

Hope this helps,
Pz
