Ras Kass’ Industry Woes Almost Over, Signing to New Label

Lyrical underdog Ras Kass is hoping to be free from his Capitol Records contract in a couple of weeks, after a long string of album delays and label setbacks that halted his rap career.

"Amistad MC, so give us free!" he recently said in New York. "I'm almost out of there."

When the California rapper dropped his 1996 debut, Soul On Ice, he was immediately heralded as hip-hop’s next lyrical genius. His 1998 follow-up album, Rassassination, met with some commercial success, but due to label postponements and a short stint in jail, Ras’ career never matched up to the hype.

Although several of Ras Kass’ albums have been indefinitely shelved in the past – including much-anticipated LPs Van Gogh (2001) and Goldyn Chyld (2002) – he has been busy working on several mixtapes including his latest, Revenge of the Spit, and a forthcoming one titled Eat Ou Mourir.

“We'll have more street records. I'm gonna keep it classic Ras Kass," he said. "I make music for you to think to. Not necessarily to dumb out. Because [Eat Ou Mourir is being overseen by] Whoo Kid, my family and the G-Unit family.”

Although Ras already has his sights on signing to another label, he is hesitant to disclose any names until the deal is official.

Soul On Ice is the only LP by him that I can play end to end, the others are nice but the beats are garbage
