Mef sounds hungry

intro is heavy, he sampled the same flute from the intro on tical
problem is serious too. He sounds mad hungry on this one.
But so far the glide is a ripper. RZA killed this!

METHOD MAN is back son.......this cd is good man

the 4 RZA produced tracks are sick......RZA is back as a producer too bro.....he brought it for MEF

"THE GLIDE" is a fuckin Wu banga for real man

RAEKWON and METH fuckin kill it....loving RAEKWON verse: "Stack up, you little niggas backup, your raps suck".....RAEKWON comes fuckin hard on this track...

whole album is pretty grimy.....especuially by 2006 standards

props to METH

METH IS back

rough review of wut i've heard so far

Intro - 9
Is It Me - 9.5
Problem - 8.5
Somebody Done Fucked Up - 9
Skit
Fall Out - 7.5
Dirty Mef - 8
4:20 - 10 (After a few more listens, this is my favorite on the album. The xzylophone is nuts)
Let's Ride - 6
The Glide - 8 (DISSAPOINTING BEAT, ALMOST THE SAME THING AS ODB - SKRILLA)
Skit
Got to Have It - 4 (who the fuck produced this garbage?)
Say - 9
Ya Meen - 4
Konitchiwa Bitches - 9
Everything - 7 (Mathematic's voice samples are beyond annoying, Deck seems a little less sharp than he was on Resident Patient)
Walk On - 7.5 (It's good to hear Red and Meth again, the beat is a little weak though)
Skit
Presidential MC - 9.5 (with a little added kung fu at the beginning and end)
4 Ever - 5

after one quick listen, 8.5/10

OK so this is pretty dope after one listen,

The Intro is sick, though the flute, as it's used, is out of place. sounds either Rza or at least RZA-ish

Is It me is dope

The Problem is ok, never really cared for E. Sermon beats, so I'm biased.

Somebody Done Fucked Up- don't like the beat

Fall Out I didn't really like much, though it sounds slightly better within the context of the album.

Dirty Mef is disappointing. This should have been crazy like Dirty Dancing, the beat is too bland for these two.

4:20 is sick, sick sick. Rza does it again. Good to hear Meth, Street and Carlton together.

Lets Ride is absolutely by-the-numbers, feels out of place

The Glide is cool but the beat is re-used(ODB- Scrilla)

Got To Have it is cool

Say is cool, somwhat bland

Ya Mean is ok, wish Meth would get "A-List" guests though.
Kinichiwa Bitches is cool but pointless.

Everything is a dope Wu reuinion, Meth always gets hype for these. (for example listen to how Meth attacks the beat on Run 4 Cover from Blackout)

Walk On is absolutely insane. Might be the best on the album. Meth and Red back and forth over some hard drums and a dope sample but.... isn't this the Just Blaze remix to Jay-Z's PSA?

President MC is cool. beat needs some life though. a piano or strings

4eva is horrible

Mr. Authority
08-16-2006, 04:22 AM
i dont know why you all aint listing Raekwon & La on the 10th track, especially since their verses were so dope

i cant really review this album now, i need to listen to this for a few weeks to be able to write a credible review, but as for now i can say this cd is after a few hours of constant playing becoming my fav album from 2006 so far

Looks like a good album, mostly because of RZA, it might have been average had he not put out those bangers

4:20 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
(Can't wait to start smoking again)

I'll be buying this, it's not entirely consistent (there are qute a few crappy songs on here actually) but the good tracks are insane---where's Ghostface and Masta Killa tho? I think he's got everybody else on here. This is what Tical 0 should've been. What's up with Def Jam? Meth and Roots are getting fucked over.

Sorry for bitching you out Meth, you came through this time.

Dr Zayus
08-16-2006, 08:49 AM
okay

1 - Intro - It was kind of boring till Meth started rapping. Then it was fuckin awesome. 4/5
2 - Is It Me - Meth kills a Scott Storch beat that doesn't sound like a Scott Storch beat, because it doesn't have annoying keyboard violins and it doesn't sound like Just A Lil Bit aka Lean Back aka every other hip-hop beat he producer. 4/5
3 - Problem - The Green Eyed Bandit finally figured out what his beats have been missing - funk! 4.5/5
4 - Someone Done Fucked Up - How is this better than anything from Blood Money? It's a good thing V.I.P. (no) and 5-0 aka Ferrari didn't rap over this, I suppose. Maybe Havoc saw what they were doing to his beats. 4.5/5
5 - Shaolin Soldier - hahaha, socom
6 - Fallout - This should be the next single. If Meth gets a 2nd single. Which he will if this sells anything at all the first week. Which it won't, because it comes out in less than 2 weeks and he has no video. Thanks Jay, L.A. 4/5
7 - DirtyMef - More E-Funk. I miss ODB. :( 5/5
8 - 4:20 - This is where it gets interesting. The first half of the album is dominated by Erick Sermon style funk and more the Meth/Red side of Method Man's catalogue. Hearing RZA on the scratched hook, the sick sick sick sick sick RZA/B9 beat and the hardass verses by Meth, Carlton & Streetlife makes this one of my favorite songs of the year. 5/5
9 - Let's Ride - funky!!! Ginuwine can also sing, which is a good sign. 4/5
10 - The Glide - Another RZA beat. If we hadn't heard Skrilla we'd be loving this, but RZA just flipped around his beat and tweaked it a bit for this song. It's still pretty damn good, and sounds different enough that I can listen to both. 4.5/5
11 - Kids - point? Well, it's a meth album
12 - Got To Have It - Sounds like... shit, I dunno. Sounds like it should have come out in 2004, but it's still good. 3.5/5
13 - Say - yeeeaaaaaaaaaaah 4.5/5
14 - Ya Meen - this is what i like to see, NY showing a bit of unity. sick beat, sick flows. 4/5
15 - Konichiwa Bitches - RZA just didn't want anyone else having these beats, did he? I can't imagine anyone in the wu ripping this beat like meth did, so it's all good. 5/5
16 - Everything - More sick Wu-Tang shit. Allah Math is one of my favorite producers in hip-hop due to his 2003-present output.
17 - Walk On - Red/Meth. You know it's gonna be sick, unless Snoop is also on the song. In which case it'll suck, because it's that weakass song from Tical 0. 4/5
18 - Pimpin - again, excusable because it's a meth album. and there are only like, 4 skits here.
19 - Presidential MC's - you've all heard it before. 5/5
20 - 4eva - Pretty good, I guess. I dunno. 3.5/5

Overall, sick ass album.

my comments off first listen:

havoc came out of nowhere with a sick beat. havent heard any real heat from this guy in a while.

this album is actually pretty good take away a few club/chic bate tracks. the production stiffs and hired gun beatmakers make good contributions. Rza and math did their thing. Rza reusing the skrilla beat was dissapointing but at leat he changed the drum and snare.

im listening to this again and its going from pretty good to not bad. i'll kick this one around for a week and see how i feel about it then.

this is a good fucking album man, more than worth the money, im definitely going to cop it. meth pulled a ghost by putting his own sound together and ending up with some quality product. it got something for everyone - not everyone is a wu-tang underground head, so he hit those people off too. and even though i don't love every song, meth put his work in on every track and the album is about lyrics and flow. he came out there to prove something, and with like 13 years in the game, im surprised anyone can sound as hungry as he does on this album. meth is one of the best to EVER do it, imo. if i had to rate it, it gotta get a 8.5/10, meth really pounded this one out.

on a side note, noone should want to rhyme after raekwon, man, he's been too ill lately. ins, fisk, and even ugod (on glide, even though hes not mentioned) came off. i like street, and he did his part, but he could've come nicer, i think. all in all, though, definitely a satisfying project, i can appreciate this one...

When Def Jam see its selling, they'll put more Sermon/RZA tracks on future Meth LP's. If it DONT sell, they'll take care of Meths album like they did with Prequal and we wont have a nice album. Buy that shit and delete it from your computer!

Why are people saying that one track is exactly like Skrilla? The arrangement as well as the drums is entirely different, it's like how Shadowboxin Fast Shadow and Throw Your Flag Up are all sampled from the same shit but flipped differently. Besides ODB's album was never even released.

I already deleted the album after listening to it twice, so it won't be played out by the time I cop it. (Off probation September 5th, will be smoking to the Holocaust album)

Standout cuts- "Is It Me", "The Glide" f/Raekwon, U-God & LA the Darkman, "Got To Have It", "Say", "Presidential MC" f/Raekwon & RZA
Radio friendly cuts- "Let's Ride" f/Ginuwine, "4 Ever" f/Megan Rochell
Throwaway cuts- all of the skits

4/5 album from Meth. Unfortunately for him, the general public isn't even aware that he has an album coming out. Def Jam- get on your job or let Meth go to a label that gives two ishs about him.

Is Megan Rochell a bootleg Tekitha or something (first Ghost's album, now Meth)? They could have slapped Keisha Cole on the track and gotten better results. Overall, dope album. Welcome back, Method Man.

Intro:
After a few boring seconds, Meth attacks this dope beat (sounds like RZA). He sounds angry and motivated, setting the mood for this album. Nice opening.
4.5/5

Is It Me:
Like almost everyone on this site, i was scared when i hear Scott Storch was producing... but i'm glad to testify he gave Meth a dope piano beat, with hard and crisp drums. Meth is Meth, which means dope voice energy and flow. Nice song!
4.25/5

Problem:
Nice E.Sermon beat using the famous "Electric Substitution" breakbeat (same as "M.E.T.H.O.D Man" or Ghost's "The Champ"). It's a simple beat, allowing Meth to shine effortlessly. Not the greatest song, but fitting well in the context of this album.
4/5

Somebody Done Fucked Up:
Havoc came through with a banger, way better than the garbage "Blood Money" material. It's dark and drums are hard and crisp, perfect for a 2006 wu record. And Meth is dope on it too. Banger!
4.5/5

Fall out:
it's obvioulsy a club record. The Kwamť track is not great but not that bad too, got that funky spacey vibe (reminding me of some Tical 0 songs). But Meth is flowing so nicely on it, so it makes the song quite enjoyable.
3.5/5

Dirty Meth:
Good to hear Dirty again. The beat makes me think of some beats from the Osirus mixtape, yet better. It's simple and it let's Meth and Dirty shine. I don't know why but i'm feeling the chorus too, it gives a good dynamic to the song.
3.75/5

4:20:
Damn, that beat is meaannn!!! It's dark, minimalist and very creative. I'm feeling a lot that updated 2006 Tical sound. Rza def still got it. And that's cool to hear tohse 3 together again. Classic track!
5/5

Let's Ride:
Ok, the song everybody's going to hate. And i'm feeling it. Denuan Porter already surprised me with his contibution to Busta's big Bang. ANd here, he gives Meth a nice mid 90's RnB throwback beat, a little similar to "Never Be The Same". I could almost picture a 95 "Brownsugar" D'angelo on it. It may feel a little out of place in the album, but not a horrible song at all.
3.5/5

The Glide:
Skrilla was a classic Dirty song, but it's never going to be released... so why being mad at Rza recycling this banger and making it a brilliant wu-banger ? Meth is a beast on it, U-God is perfect, Rae keeps proving he owns 2006 and La delivers a tight chorus.
5/5

Got To have It:
Tired concept. but the beat is cool and Meth rides it with ease and energy.
Good song.
3.75/5

Say:
I never really felt that song, especially the beat. But in the context of the album, i appreciate it more. Still not too crazy about it though...
3/5

Ya Meen:
i'm going against the grain once again with this one. I'm really feeling the beat, nothing spectacular but it's hard and heavy. Still, it would have been better without Fat Joe's weak performance. He almost ruins the track after Meth good performance. Styles P is aight.
3.5/5

Konichiwa Bitches:
It will go down as Meth's classics along with "Retrogodfather", "Torture" or "killing Fields"... Meth+RZA = greatness
5/5

Everything:
Allah Math banger. It's simple yet it brings that perfect wu-vibe necessary for a vintage wu-banger. Deck and Street are dope too, and i don't even need to comment on Meth.
4.5/5

Walk On:
Meth and Red going back and forth on this crazy live breakbeat... one of the best Meth/Red song, making me anticipate Black Out 2...
5/5

Presidential MC:
Another crazy RZA beat!! i'm feeling that low Rza voice, same with Rae and Mr Meth spits hard!
5/5

4ever:
What a strange beat... you're getting used to it after a while though but still Megan Rochell confirms what i was thinking after listening to Ghost's "Mama": she's mediocre at best. Weak song.
2/5

Ok, Meth redeemed himself after that horrible Tical 0. 4:21 is actually a really dope album, balancing quite nice the wu aesthetics with 2006's clean and punchy sound, almost like a Wu version of Busta Rhymes' "Big Bang".
It may be lacking the concepts of Fishscale but at the same time, we love Meth for his charisma, voice, dope wordplay and delivery, things he delivers in this album.
So i'll be more than glad to buy it when it hits the stores.

4/5

Ok, 1st, the name is "Synthetic Substitution" 2nd, That's not the sample Sermon uses. He uses Skull Snaps - "It's a New Day"

1. Intro 10/10 ILL (takes a little too long to get to the verse)

2. Is It Me 9/10 ILL

3. Problem 7/10 (good, not really feelin the Bandit's Beats lately)

4. Somebody Done Fucked Up 8/10 (nice track, expected more from HAV)

5. Shaolin Soldier (Skit)

6. Fall Out 7.5/10 (good club track, hook is suspect and beat has a sloppy sound in it that needs to go)

7. Dirty Mef (Feat. O.D.B.) 6.5/10 (good to hear dirt but I dont feel the beat, and dirtys rhymes sound forced)

8. 4:20 (Feat. Streetlife & Carlton Fisk) 7/10 (alright, but definitely skippable

9. Let's Ride (Feat. Ginuwine) 4/10 (not feelin it. not cuz its R&B, just cuz its wack)

10. The Glide 8/10 (Ill but I liked the "skrilla" beat better)

11. Kids (Skit)

12. Got To Have It 7.5/10 (actually listened to it and mef kills this 1...beat kinda annoying though)

13. Say 8.5/10 ILL

14. Ya'Meen (Feat. Fat Joe & Styles P) 7/10 (meth murders everyone on it, Fat Joe needs to retire or change his style)

15. Konichiwa Bitches 8/10 (Ill)

16. Everything (Feat. Inspectah Deck & Streetlife) 10/10 (WU BANGA)

17. Walk On (Feat. Redman) 8/10 (ILL)

18. Pimpin' (Skit)

19. Presidential M.C. (Feat. Raekwon & The Rza) 8.5/10 (at first didnt really feel mef's style on this but its nice still...sounds more like a rae track though 4 sho...beat is serious)

20. 4 Ever (Feat. Megan Rochell) 1/10 (sorry this is garbage)

All in all the album is bangin...I wouldve made it shorter and cut some of the fat off but still good. I want Mef to start talkin bout more than just how ill his mic is or how fucked up the critics head are though. Mef is a vet and I wanna hear some real messages in his music next time up.
I still didnt get the mef album Ive been waitin for all these years but its a good sign that jonny still blaze. (on the real though mef ned to hit me up for some beats cuz some of those are just not album material...stay tuned to hear some of the lava i got right now...I aint playin)

you do know that "professional" reviwers usually only listen to an advance copy of the album or attend a listening party and only listen to the album once, right?

besides, this is a mastered copy of the album that will appear in stores. I'm sick of people using this argument, this isn't the same case as the fishscale advanced that leaked.

the point is that professional reviewers dont go out and buy the album off the shelves and review them. most of the time they get the same advances we do and review the album off of that.

LMAO. Made In Brooklyn is pretty wack... masta sounds lazy on most of the songs and has a few horrible songs on his album. Only a masta killa dickrider would prefer mad in brooklyn.

Anyway... this Meth album is great.
The Only songs i don't like are:
Lets Ride
4ever
Fall Out
Got to have it

Only 4 songs i don't like.... and i can still listen to gotta have it cuz it's not that bad.

The other songs range from Great to pretty good.
Keep in mind that i am not a wu groupie who only wants to listen to Wu Fam beats and RZA beats.... if another producer makes a good beat then i will listen to it.

I really don't know what's wrong with these weird wu stants... if a wu member makes a commercial album they hate on it, and if they made a good hip hop album they still hate on it.

Anyway...

Peace.

I know Wade is gonna dis ugree - but, after I listen to Fall out in my ride (no I didn't DL the album) jus that 1 cut: The Beat is fiyah - word, although there are sum elements that over shadow the song - the hook and the irratating vocal "Fall out" in the background.

That Diry Mef track is ill 2.

Ive given it about 3 listens.

Its an OK album. No 5/5's and a few duds.

1. Intro - 4/5 could be a 5/5,sample had me amped. shoulda been a full joint. Best beat on the album.

2.Is It Me - 4/5.. another STRONG song. Dope beat and Meth rides it.

3.Problem - 3.5/4... dont really like most eric sermon beats but the drums are too clean on this one to deny.

4.Somebody Fucked Up - 3.5.. Dope beat but kinda drags on... good to hear havoc behind the boards.

6. Fall Out - 3.5... Great flow from meth, and I like the beat.

7. Dirty Meth - 3.5/5 another eric sermon cookie cutter creation but Odb and meth back and forth makes it more than bearable.

8. 4:20 - 4/5 Dope ass beat... its like a mix of the houston sound (with the slowed hook) and Wu. Definately one of the iller tracks on the album.

9. Lets Ride - 3/4. This gets hate BUT IM FEELIN IT. Woulda been even better if the hook was replaced by the AYAYAYAYA part in the beginning. People hated on it once they heard Ginuwines name but he can sing!

10. Glide - 3.5/4 .... I dunno. Half of the time when I hear the beat im really into it but the other half it gets annoying. Rae kills it but U-Gods calamari in jail line kinda makes me cringe.

13. Got To Have it 2.5/5 ... not feeling it. Skipworthy.

14. Say 3.5/5 ... i havent even heard it that much and it feels played out to me when I play it on the album.

15. Nahmean 2.5/5 ... Its a track that SHOULD be hype but falls flat for me for some reason (around Fat Joes verse especially, then after that I dont even care)

16. Konichiwa Bitches 3/5 ... Good song, not the best RZA beat.

17. Everything 3.5.. dope math beat and streetlife is DOPE.

18. Walk On ... 3.5 ... I dont like it that much and I dont know why

20. Presidential MC ...4/5 DOPE rza beat. Not the greatest lyrics but the atmosphere makes it.

21. 4EVER ... 3.5/5 ..... not a bad song. Coulda made a Harder song on this beat and it woulda been better.

IMO... even though the whole product is better than Tical 0... songs like The Show and Whats Happenin were better than the majority of songs on this joint. Meths lyrics are alot stronger, none of them are anywhere near his best work but hes still sharp with the clever lines and punches. His flow is sharp as hell here too but not very different from song to song.

Just as good as any other Major Label release that has came out this year but if you use those standards anything is awesome. I know the averages on the individual songs might be higher than my overall rating but I base that one how I feel after Ive listened to the album and after I listen to this album I give it a 3/5. Head-Nod-able throughout but nothing that really grabs my attention also alot of songs that ill prob be skipping on any future listens.

If I were to just keep a few songs from it on my iPod theyd be

The Intro (maybe edit out the soundclips)
Is It Me
4:20
and
Presidential

That's the way of the world now. Artists depend on their fans who enjoy and appreciate their efforts, to buy the CD and support them, whether it has leaked or not. Financially and via charts, which will allow them other opportunities. If someone downloads the CD and doesn't compensate the artist in some way, they are thieves. }:T

This album was avaible in The Netherlands on 26/8/06. Rating of tracks IMO:

Good tracks:
Dirty Mef
The Glide
Say
Presidential MC

So-so tracks:
(Intro)
Is It Me
Somebody Done F**ked Up
4:20
Got To Have It
Ya'Meen
Everything
Walk On
4 ever

Skippable tracks:
Problem
Fallout
Konichiwa Bi*ches

It's better than Tical 0, but no way close to Tical, Tical 2000 or Blackout! If you compare it to another huge recent Wu-release (Ghostface' Fishscale) it also fails sort and doesn't live up to the expectations.

Though Meth is one of my favorite rappers of all-time I can't deny he doesn't sound very inspired anymore on this album. Check out the old Wu-albums to know why you liked him so much.

Hot album exceeded my expectations by alot best Wu release of the year

Intro-"Make Marijuana legal" lol but Rza on the production is good i would have wanted this beat as a whole song not just intro 8/10

Is it me-ANd i thought Scot Storch sucked lately. But the keyboards are hot on this track and Meth lyrically strong. 8.5/10

Problem- Mef's got a bone to pick on this track. 7.5/10

Somebody Done Fucked Up- Havoc came out of nowhere and made a real banger 9/10

Fall Out- The beat is ok but the hook pisses me off with the guy yellin "Fall Out" decent club song. 6.5/10

Dirty Mef-"Fuck U Fuck U" I love ODB this track is hot 9/10

4:20- Great weed song. Its Rza on the production so it s def dope 8.5/10

Lets Ride- A bit R&B not feelin this 1 at all but Mef comes lyrically very strong. Maybe it will grow on me. 6.5/10

The Glide-Skrilla beat with diff drums and snare. Sounds great I like U-eys verse on this one the best. 9.5/10

Got to Have it- skippable but decent, i guess MEf wants to be on Oprah 6/10

Say- Mef says it all fuck the critics 9/10

Ya' Meen- Club Song its ok when i want a good club song, Fat Joe was weak tho 7/10

Konichiwa Bitches- My second fav on the allbum very hot track 9.5/10

Everything- Ins rips this track a new one 8.5/10

Walk On- Typical Mef and Red i cant complain the beat isnt the greatest but a good change of pace on the album 7.5/10

Presidential MC- Wu Banga the best Wu track this side of 2000/ the album version has a kung Fu intro 10/10

4 ever- a song for the ladies i'm not feelin it 5/10

Overall 8.5/10 very hot album one of the years best

HERE'S WHAT A CRITIC HAD 2 SAY:

Method Man - 4:21... The Day After

Album Review by: Lee Tillman
Sun, August 27th, 2006

http://www.nobodysmiling.com/content/image/album-covers/Method_Man_The_Day_After.jpg The first bar's on Method Mans new album '4:21 The Day After' are "Stop look and listen guess who's coming up/ and y'all was dumb enough to think that Methods numbers up". Well, can you blame us? After 13 years in the game it's not a secret that Method Man hasn't released the most stellar of solo albums. After the release of 'M. E. T. H. O. D. Man' the single it was assumed that Mef would be the one to blow. Mostly because of his singsongy delivery and the looks that the girls loved. He was the easiest Clan member for Middle America to swallow. While his debut 'Tical' had some unforgettable singles with 'Bring The Pain', 'All I Need' and 'Release Yo' Delf' even Method Man himself said it was the worst of the Wu Tang solo albums. It's hard to disagree when you think of the other Clan albums that were released shortly after. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords and Ironman.

In 1998 came 'Tical 2000: Judgment Day'. Although it went platinum it wasn't much better than the first. Then came the long awaited Red/Mef album 'Blackout' which showed some promise but we also got 'How High' the movie and 'Method & Red' the TV series. Since then it's been downhill for the Clan. Not too many people even remember 'Tical 0: The Prequel' was released and even our beloved Ghostface Killah caught a brick with 'The Pretty Tony Album'.

So where are we now? Well, Ghost joined the Carter administration and Method has FINALLY released his best solo album to date. '4:21 The Day After' (because 4/21 is the day after national weed smoking day, its a moment of clarity) is what every Method Man fan has been waiting for, for 12 years.

"F a rap critic, He talk about it while I live it/ If Red got the blunt I'm the second one to hit it". He said it over 10 years ago on his ...(continued below)

first venture with Reggie Nobles and evidently his views haven't changed. The 'Intro' touches on both topics with a Legalize Marijuana campaign rally as the backdrop while Mef spits ferocious lines at people like me'(i.e. rap critics). His mantra on this album is obviously "Don't count me out, just count me in".

Unlike previous albums Meth plays to his strengths by focusing on lyrics instead of outlandish production and personas. The mission this time is strait forward. As he states in Intro "If Def Jam is deaf then start reading my lips, I'm cocky".

His choice in beat makers defiantly helps bring this to fruition. Kwame's sparse production on 'Fall Out' makes way for Mef's Ginsu sharp flow. Havoc cues up the cinematic strings (circa 'Hell on Earth' era Mobb Deep) on 'Somebody Done Fucked Up' to remind us that he (both Hav and Mef) still got it. Eric Sermon, who produced the first single 'Say' allows Mr. Smith to vent about the three R's of the hip-hop world (Radio, Record labels and Rap fans) and how all three are terribly fickle. FYI: contrary to popular belief 'Say' only samples Lauryn Hill and doesn't actually feature her. Rza produces four tracks but the standout is undoubtedly 'Presidential M. C.' which finds Raekwon & The Rza back on their 'A' game.

One of the many highlights of the album is 'Dirty Mef' which features O. D. B spitting quite possibly his most coherent verse ever which makes you wonder what could have been. 'Ya'Meen' is the obvious "Let's bring hip hop back to N.Y." track which trades in finger snaps for hand claps and features Fat Joe who gets a little in over his head halfway through his verse and Styles P. who sounds a little too cocky. "Ni**a's in the East want to unite./ Not me. If you ain't sayin' I'm the best you ain't come at me right". We love you P but come on, the best? Yet, somehow the song gets it point across quite well.

While '4:21' is many things it is in no way a classic. In the best-case scenario this is just the tip of the iceberg and Method will get even better with his coming albums. The worst-case scenario is that he'll get Diddy to produce another album. One of the problems is that it gets a little soggy in the middle starting off with the quasi-title track '4:20'. Rza provides a so-so track and both Mef and the usually scene stealing Streetlife follow suit. Things go into autopilot thanks to mediocre songs like 'Let's Ride' which features Ginuwine and 'Gotta Have it'. The end of the album brings things back into focus with songs like the aforementioned 'Presidential M. C.' and the obligatory Redman collaboration 'Walk On' in which Red and Mef trade in their "America's Most Blunted" schtick for a darker sound. Hearing Red say he'll "pull out a gun big as a vacuum cleaner" makes me wonder what Blackout part 2 would sound like.

Finally, Method Man has delivered an album worthy of his veteran status. The only question is: Is it too little too late for N.Y. hip hop or will our hero Johnny Blaze swoop in and save the day? Tune in next time kiddies. Until then... Happy 4/21 everybody!

Meth reps the shit out of wu on this album. Thats what the fuck all the members should be doing. Loving Red on that grimey beat.(Wonder if their going to go that grimey sound on the next meth, red album) Very happy with how the album turned out. Yes there are two or three weaker songs but thats all right. Solid 8.5. Best wu album of the year so far.

Earlier today I bought method man 421. The first listen was a tad bit disappointment. About 4 hours later I gave it another spin. It improved. Here is a somewhat quick review of the album.

1 Intro 4.00. Probably, the best track on the album. The beat is outer space
insanic. Reminds me of tical. The opening track is promising. The mef is back
2. Is it me? 3.00 Not bad for a Scott storch beat. Homeboy came correct on this one.

3 The problem 2.75 its allright, the instrument in the background betters the song.
4. Somebody done fuck up 2.50. I aint feeling this havoc beat.
5. Fall out. 2.50 Sounds like a crappy club song. I only like the alarm sound in this song. Hopefully, this song will get airplay and 421 will go platinum.
6. Dirty Mef 3.00 Pretty good song that includes the osirus. Itís nice that mef remembers The ol dirty bastard. Beat reminds me of the osirus mixtape.
7. 4;20. 3.50 This beat is eerie and grimey. I liked it at first. , now I really dig this track. Just like most RZA tracks this song will slowy be a wu banger or classic in a few months. Thatís what I love about the RZA.
8. Lets ride. 2.75. I hated this song at first, but when I took second listen I paid attention to mef s words and I said shit mef is good on this one. I aint no r/b fan,, but mef lyrics saves this song. It should be used in a mega movie, thus making 421 platinum.
9. Glide. 3,25 Pretty good song. I expected a better rza production. I know it will grow on me.
10. Got to have it 2.25 least fav track on the album.
11. Say 3.75. wonderful song by bob marley. Produced nicely by Erick sermon. Wish he would made more of an effort on his other 421 produced tracks. Say is just wonderful.
12. Ya mean 2.50 This song is alright.
13. konichiwa Bitches 3.00. good song.
14. Everything 2.75. I thought math would give mef a down assbeat, but itís alright.
15. Walk on. 3.50. First song I burned to I tunes before its released. I really didnít dig the track at the time. Now I love he drums and guitar in the song. It gives a rock n roll soul feel to it.
16. Presidential mc 3.50. A kick ass song. I donít like it as most people do. Itís a great song, but hey maybe it will slowly grow on me. I was hoping for me to love this track.
17. 4 ever. 3.00. nice song. Megan rochell fared well in this one. If 421 goes platinum Megan Rochelle should suck everyoneís dick that is affiliated with the wu.

Overall the album scored a 3.02.. This album shows mefs weakness, his blindness of wack mainstream beats. Seriously mef needs to stop. I canít believe he digs yung juc itís going down sadly, mef probably is under contract with def jam. He probably would like to make a real wu like album but heís got a family to feed. So I Guess I donít blame him
The album is good. Not as good as inspcthah decks mixtape.

Problem- 8.5/10 very nice track
Somebody done fucked up- 9/10 (Havoc comes with some good shit)
Fall out- 8.5/10 (Dont give a shit if its for the club or not, if I'm feeling it there no need to hate on it and I'm really feeling this track)
Dirty Mef-9/10 (Meth and ODB together def cant go wrong there)
420- 10/10 (The first time I heard this I was like nah but then 4 or 5 times later it is up there as one of my fav tracks. I cant get the hook out of my head and I'm loving Fisk's verse)
From the beginning to now the album is hot and flows so nice. Meth is bringing heat and I'm loving the hooks and how meth is repping wu.
Lets ride- 7.5/10 (Its a pretty good track but it kind of ruined the flow of the album)
The Glide- 10/10 (I loving these grimey tracks, ugod is my fav on the track. Good to hear Darkman)
Got to have it- 6/10 (Was not feeling the hook and beat. Meth def saved the track from me giving it a 4. My least fav track )
Say- 10/10 (Meth spitting some good shit, love the beat and hook.)
Ya Meen- 8/10 (Like the beat and meth but Fat Joe and Styles verses were not that great to me, they ruined it.)
Konichwa Bitches- 10/10 (Meth brings the heat)
Everthing- 10/10 (Great posse cut)
Walk on- 9/10 (Love hearing red on that grimey beat, I dont think I ever heard him on a grimey type of beat before.)
Presidential MC- 10/10 (Classic joint)
4 ever- 5/10 ( Actually this is my least fav joint. Dont like it at all)

I give the album a 8.5 because there are many classic cuts and the albums has a nice flow to it. The posse cuts are amazing to me. Meth brings a lot of that gimey sound back on many of the tracks. There are only 4 weaker songs to me which is not bad. Was not expecting a classic but this album is def a banger. Very happy with it. it took a few listens to really get into it. 12 out of 16 tracks made my Ipod which is prtty damn good.

album is ok, i find it hard to believe over 60% say its a banger. the best songs are RZA produced which shows if RZA took over the album it would be up to par with Tical, but its not, far from it. just like one member used to say on here WU TANG IS THE HOUSE RZA BUILT.

i liked fishscale, but the flow was so bad on that album so i didnt even listen to it that much. im on the 3rd listen for this album i just got it yesterday and i really like it now. while the glide and presidential mc are the best, theres plenty other sick songs on it. a few are way too poppy for my taste though. and the last track is pretty bad..

This album is sick. Picked it up the other day at FYE for 9.99. Already had the bootleg so remember support the artist!!!!

This is a definite banger but not a classic. That song with Genuwine is garbage. Other than that most of the tracks are EXCELLENT. Say is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. He starts off the album on the right note with the 1st track and keeps up the intensity. Presidential MC's is the type of track you've come to expect from Wu-Tang. It's good to see that Meth is back on teh horse after the last album. I never once believed he lost it and was instead the product of a shitty record company. Now that he's escaped he's back to being a top MC>

i think a lot of people think this way but imo:

1. i don't think it was meth's ideas to have some of the weaker joints on there (like the r&b joints - theyre ok, but don't flow with the album - and a redid yahmean) - shouldn't blame the artist for a business decision outside of his control
2. that still leaves a good 13 or 14 very good tracks, about as many as you're gonna get on any good album.

on a side note, i would have liked to see john 3:16 (i know it's old) and afterparty with ghost on the album, and cut out the r&b tracks, fall out and yahmean. but thats why they got mp3s...

The album is sick...the only track that ain't grown on me yet is "Somebody Done Fucked"...all the rest are Bangers....Glad to see Redman back in action on "Walk On"...and the beat to "Is It Me" is nutz..."Glide" is also off the hook, wasn't expecting U-God, but his verse was a pleasent surprise...I'm also feelin' "Fall Out" and "Got to Have It"...and I love Meth on "Ya'Meanut I wish it had Wu-Members on it with him instead of Fat Joe and Styles, Styles is aiigh, but Fat Joe been washed up for awhile...overall, its the best album I heard yet this year, but next album better Have GZA on it

I felt the album was average overall. Not a bad effort, and definitely lightyears better than Tical 0. But certain aspects keep it from being great.

1. Lack of original material. You're mad at the critics and you're real, we get it! I think a track or two is enough to get his point across, it gets old after the same subject repeats itself through the entire album. I don't doubt his technical ability, but what he really needs to improve on is storytelling and writing.

2. His arguments hold no water. Tical 0 was embarassing. In fact, most anything he's done in recent memory was terrible.

3. Generic beats. There are some really good ones (especially some from RZA) but way too many forgettable, run-of-the-mill, radio friendly efforts. There's a lack of energy, creativity and personality.

4. Confused direction. Meth says he's "the dirtiest thing in sight," yet lets some squeaky clean Rap&Bullshit like "Last Ride" and "Got to Have It" pass through somehow. So which is it?

Average album that will probably get left to collect dust as time goes by. Not bad, but not good. It's easy on the ears, pleasant enough to not offend anyone. Milktoast. He fits right in the middle of the modern day hip hop shelf. Who wants a pleasant but yawn inducing Method Man? Not me. Instead of getting mad at the praise given to Ghostface, maybe he should take notes.

3/5

Ok, since I've now listened to the album enough to get a good feel for it (I listen to it all the way through at least once every 2 days), I'ma give my expert review :)

1. Intro - nice audio sample, sets the tone for the album, and the rap and beat on this are off the hook...best intro I've heard in awhile. 5/5
2. Is It Me - Perfect Opening Track. Beat is Bangin, Hook is Bangin' , Lyrics are Tight...All round good Track. 5/5
3. Problems - Had to hear this a few times to actually listen to it. I love it now. Catchy and nice hook, nice lyrics and cool beat. 4.5/5
4. Somebody Done Fucked Up - I always forget the name of this track because its now programed in my memory to simply skip number 4...In case you can't tell, I don't like this track at all. And with a beat by Havoc, I was expectin' alot. 2/5
5. Shaolin Soldier - like most skits now a days, its a waste of space. 1/5
6. Fall Out - Wasn't feelin' the beat at first, but now I'm feelin' this track. its no classic, but still a good song. 3.5/5
7. Dirty Mef - I love this track. Classic Dirt Shit...ODB really shines on this one, I almost forget Mef is on it. 5/5
8. 4:20 - Very nice Mellow track. I'm a big Streetlife fan, so, I'm happy to see him on here. Also good to hear Carlton Fisk on a track with Mef again. 4/5
9. Let's Ride - Alot better than I thought it would be by seeing the title and seeing Ginuwine's name. I'm feelin' it. This could be a club banger. 4/5
10. The Glide - Wu Tang Classic. I was so happy to hear U-God just pop up in the song. only complaint is that there was no verse by LA. Still a Banger. 5/5
11. Kids - Mef, why waste my time with these skits. funny the first time, an annoying interuption every time after. 1/5
12. Got To Have It - Classic. I Love this joint. At first I really didn't like it. After listening to the lyrics, I'm feelin' it. One of my Favorite joints on the album. 5/5
13. Say - Not feelin' this. I'm feelin' the lyrics, but not the beat or the sample on the hook. But I do like the concept. 2.5/5
14. Ya'Mean - This Track is a STR8 BANGER....Untill Fat Joe Opens his mouth....Mef should do a Remix and take out Fat Joe and Styles and insert Streetlife and Ghostface. but as it is, this track gets weak after Mef's verse, Ya'mean?. 2/5
15. Konichiwa Bitches - At first I hated this, but found myself sayin' "Konichiwa Bitches" to people at work, on the street and at friends houses. I love this track now. 4/5
16. Everything - Another Wu Tang Banger. I'm lovin' it. Streetlife could have come stronger, but its still STR8 fire in my book. 5/5
17. Walk On - I'm feelin' this. Haven't heard Redman in awhile, good to see he's still alive. I always love the back and forth type tracks. 5/5
18. Pimpin' - Ok, I know I've been dissin' skits, but this one is funny everytime I hear it. "Drop Your excuses and pick up a purpose", best like EVER. 5/5
19. Presidential MC - Wu Tang Banger. Love the beat, lyrics, hook, flow. shit, whats not to love bout this track? Str8 Classic. 5/5
20. 4 Ever - The weak hook on this track makes it unbearable. I like what Mef is saying on this track, but the hook is so bland and corny, I just can't sit through it.

There ya go...Mr. M-E-T-H-O-D Man has dropped the best Wu album this year, and not only that, he reps Wu-Tang more than any other Member has in a LONG time. He screams Wu-Tang on almost every track and says Wu-Tang as part of the hook on 2 tracks ("Is It Me" and "Everything"). Not only is it nice to hear a tight Mef album, but its also good to hear his loyalty. (U-God said the words Wu-Tang maybe twice on his last album, sad).

16. Everything (Feat. Inspectah Deck & Streetlife) 3:34 Yo when I heard Deck come on the track I was like oh shit cause he killed it with that new balance line lol. Streetlife killed it of course. 4.5/5
17. Walk On (Feat. Redman) 2:46 Lol Redman came harder then Meth caught back up at the end This shit hot Preview of B.A.S.I.C. 4.5/5
18. Pimpin' (Skit) 0:31 LOL Meth
19. Presidential M.C. (Feat. Raekwon & The Rza) 4:30 This shit is hot Meth and Rae come hard. Rza came sloppy man wtf? If he was replaced by Deck this would've been 5/5. 4.5/5
20. 4 Ever (Feat. Megan Rochell) 4:04 I like this shit lol plus that chick is from philly i gotta show props lol. 4/5

Overall I rate the album...4/5 Imagine if he had those grimey ass beats This would've been pure heat but it already is though. Where are the wack beats? This album is nice man niggaz need to stop hatin on Meth.A toast to Meth for a great album.:f

1. Intro : Great beat, good comeback lyrics. "...I'm the dirtiest thing in sight." 5/5
2. Is It Me : Oops, did I accidentally buy a Dr. Dre record? 3/5
3. Problem : Forgettable beat, ok lyrics. 3/5
4. Somebody Done Fucked Up : Decent beat, but somehow gets repetitive really quick. Boring chorus, ok lyrics. 2/5
6. Fall Out : Cool to see him switch up the flow a bit. Beat is pretty nice, especially with the change-ups. But feels out of place alongside the dustier tracks. 3.5/5
7. Dirty Mef : Simple beat, matches the mood of this track. Haven't heard Dirty this good since...a long time. 4/5
8. 4:20 (Feat. Streetlife & Carlton Fisk) : Forgettable beat. Even worse chorus. Below average flows. 2/5
9. Let's Ride (Feat. Ginuwine) : Soft Rap&Bullshit. How did we get from "Intro" to this?? 1/5
10. The Glide : Great team effort. Nice beat and rhymes. 5/5
12. Got To Have It : Good flow, a little bit different and unique. Mainstream beat is tossable. 3/5
13. Say : Mellow beat is nice, but nothing special. Rhymes about same old subject matter. Made for MTV. 3/5
14. Ya'Meen (Feat. Fat Joe & Styles P) : Retarded chorus, Fat Joe's verse is even worse. Wasn't "Fall Out" enough for a club track? 1.5/5
15. Konichiwa Bitches : Is this for real? Japanese? Really nice beat killed by the stupid, cheesy chorus. 2/5
16. Everything (Feat. Inspectah Deck & Streetlife) : Pretty cool wu-type beat. Bad chorus. Given the roster, this should have been much better. 2/5
17. Walk On (Feat. Redman) : Slow, plodding, and...yeah. 2/5
19. Presidential M.C. (Feat. Raekwon & The Rza) : Great beat, great lyrics. The standard that every track should have reached. 5/5
20. 4 Ever (Feat. Megan Rochell) 4:04 Disposable beat. Horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible chorus. Stupid. Is this a Wu-Tang record or Hilary Duff's? We know he's capable of making a great hip hop love song, so this is no excuse. 0/5

Overall: 2.5/5 (averaged from individual scores)

After many more listens, and letting everything sink in, my previous comments still stand. While it has it's share of good tracks, overall, there is no consistent tone to this album. Write about some different subjects, pick cohesive beats, get rid of the pathetic R&B efforts.

Standouts:

Intro
Dirty Mef
The Glide
Presidential MC
Got to Have It
Fall Out

I have been driving about 3 hours per day for the week and had this in the head unit throughout so have got to know this album quite well. Overall I have found that its a very good album but I just can't get around how it goes between styles. Heres my review:

1. Intro - 5/5 A perfect way to start off the cd with a very good reply to his critics
2. Is It Me -2/5 Nice enough lyrics and great flow but the beat was a big let down for me
3. Problems - 4/5 The more I listen to this track the more I like it. Definately one of the tracks on the cd that will have longevity for me
4. Somebody Done Fucked Up - 5/5 Havoc really went all out for his Wu Tang buddy. Mobb Deep and Wu Tang have had alot of great tracks together and this definately goes in the list of great collaborations between the two
5. Shaolin Soldier - N/A
6. Fall Out - 1/5 reminds me of the prequel
7. Dirty Mef - 3/5 decent track. The more I've heard it the more I've liked it but still wouldn't say its anything more than decent
8. 4:20 - 5/5 The type of track that sends chills down the spine of a Wu Tang fan!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tical deliver hook or crook/so many asses to kick wish I had a bigger foot - that sums up this track
9. Let's Ride - 0.5/5 Not something I particularly like or will like anytime soon
10. The Glide - 5/5 'From staircase to stage' Rae says it and Wu mean it on this track. Meth has an exceptional verse as does Rae.
11. Kids - N/A
12. Got To Have It - 5/5 love this track
13. Say - 5/5 After hearing this a few times I got to say Meth speaks the truth here. Just for what he is saying I think this track is 100% to me
14. Ya'Mean - 3/5 I really like the track with Meths opening and the way the bass comes in and then cuts out and follows on straight after. But wtf was Fat Joe thinking? Ruined banger
15. Konichiwa Bitches - 4/5 this is very good and its Meth to point with a beat thats to point
16. Everything - 5/5 Wu Banger. Hook was annoying but I actually have got used to it and
17. Walk On - 4/5 Exactly whats to be expected of Red and Meth
18. Pimpin' - N/A
19. Presidential MC - 5/5 Rza needs to do more of that shit with his emceeing. This is to me the most comeplete track on here. If someone was to say to these three make a typical Wu Tang track then this is what I would expect for a Meth album
20. 4 Ever - 0.5/10 Terrible

Like I said, I can't really get around the style changing throughout. How and album can have tracks like 4:20 and presedential emcees and the fall out, lets ride and 4ever is just an anomolie to me.

I found that the more that I listened to it the more some of the tracks I thought were ok turned to be quite good. Meth really does reply back to his critics and I think he shows here that despite being rich and in work he still has that street mentality when it comes to rhyming.

My final rating is 7/10. This isn't taken from individual ratings but is from my experience of having the cd in the stereo and listening to it as a whole. I just don't like tracks like is it me, fall out, lets ride and so on. But there are alot of straight out bangers on here too. Very few average tracks - just bangers mixed in with the horrible. But don't get me wrong, definately worth my cash just for 4:20 alone.

The album certainly lacks direction and consistency. As they say, too many cooks spoil the food. It doesn't seem like artists are able to make complete albums anymore. Especially not if they're released on Def Jam. There are some good tracks, some great tracks, and some horrible tracks. Remember when every tracks on an album were at least good? This album is messed up. It's not a bad album per se, but not a great one either. Why is there an RnB track with Ginuwine right after 4:20, a grimey, rza-pruduced weed smoking track? It just doesn't make sense. I might come off sour, but it seems like the art of making a cohesive album has been lost on a lot of artists. The main problem seems to be that very few albums are produced by one producer, and one producer only. Albums with one MC and one producer always seem to turn out good. Why? Direction and cohesion in sound and an overall theme that keeps the album together. That's why the GZA vs Muggs album worked. That's why all the early wu solos worked, thats why every Gang Starr album worked etc.
When Def Jam tries to reach a wider demographic, Mef ends up alienating a lot of the established fanbase. Fishscale had the same tendency, but to me that album was better, since number of great tracks far outweighed the miss steps. Well, I'm done ranting, just had to get this off my chest. I reckon this opinion isn't very controversial at all, and a lot of people will agree with me.

Peace

Yo that review was crazy. That album deserves WAY more than that. 4:20 is hot. You give everysong a wack rating. Where are you from?

I gave 9 songs at least a 3/5 rating, which isn't bad at all. I even gave a few 5/5. I've never said Meth was wack, he just didn't put out a great album. It's decent, no doubt, but nowhere near great. I love Wu-Tang, they're my favorite group of all time, and pretty much single-handedly got me into hip hop. But I don't make excuses from them. If it's bad, I'll admit it.

The problem with the album, is that he talks BIG. Like he's on some kind of crusade to save his name, put his clan back on top, and destroy all past criticisms. Yeah, got me excited...And some tracks actually make you start to believe him.

But right after he clears his name with some badass track, he messes it all up again with some stupid, soft, r&b, mtv, bet, clear channel bullshit (Is It Me, Let's Ride, and pretty much the worst song I've heard all year--4 Ever).

Now, I know even though I'm not into that "hip pop" stuff, some people are. To each their own. My problem with 4:21 is that he claims:

"See we them niggaz, ain't no hoe in us, the flow is nuts"

"It's "common sense", I Used 2 Love H.E.R., now they pimpin' her, yeah"

"How could you ever say that I'm washed up /When I'm the dirtiest thing in sight"

Ok, great, Meth. So you're hardcore, hip hop's gone soft, and you're here to bring it back. Well, how am I going to believe that after hearing "4 Ever"?

The first 7 tracks (minus the skit) are classic Meth (especially the Intro and Somebody done Fucked Up). I guess im one of the few that wasn't feeling 420 as much as most. The Glide was also classic, after that it goes downhill a little bit, but still dope. The RZA beats on this were ok, but nothing special like most people are saying. There maybe only 3 weak tracks that i skip, but it's a dope cd overall. 4 out of 5

I'd like to think that Def Jam is to blame for this mess, but somehow Fishscale turned out great (there were 2 duds in there, but seems like they kept their hands off the rest). I was scared to death that they'd destroy The Roots as we know it, but the newest record is nice, and even better than the previous. Why does Def Jam always gotta mess with Meth?

Good point. If you're going to make a song for BET, at least PUT IT ON and promote it on BET. Don't screw up the whole album with that garbage and not even use it for marketing.

They don't need Rza producing a whole album. Listen to Beneath The Surface or Supreme Clintele. Great Albums. Tical 2000 is a great album. I'll perfer 4th and True to do a new Meth cd over Rza any day.

True, but all the albums you have mentioned had RZA as a executive producer. The only classic Wu album which haven't been produced completely or executively by RZA is Heavy Mental IMO. I also think that Meth album wholy produced by RZA & Wu Elements (especially True, 4th & Math) would be a modern day hip-hop classic.
