Alright, with a raise of hands, how many of you have a PS3? How many of you have paid over $700 for one?
How many of you are willing to pay $2500 for the next PS3? Uh....what?!!?
Yes, the mastermind behind the highly overrated and hard to find PS3, Ken Kutaragi, was recently interviewed and promised that Sony was going to move forward on a more AV-centric PS3. What is an AV-centric PS3 you might ask? Well, according to Kutaragi, the audio and video capabilities of this PS3 would center on the Cell-processor's ability to incorporate multiple media devices and not so much the gaming aspect.
The easiest way to picture this is something like a media center that incorporates Sony's Blu-ray player along with a DVR and Dolby Digital receiver. An all-in-one if you will.
Focusing on Sony's need to win the HD DVD / Blu-ray battle, this living room media center would "be a standard AV component sized box with a more powerful, power supply unit, anti-shake insulator, twice the main memory, and 2x HDMI to split sound and video output."
While the PS3 has had its share of problems, production issues, etc., Sony has not had a problem manufacturing its XBR TV's or its line of ES audio equipment. Combining the best of both worlds might be a savior for Sony as the video/audiophiles can't get enough of the new power processors being incorporated into their high end home theaters.
