Motherfuck shit twat! I decided to place my X360 vertical cause someone told me the DVD drive makes less noise that way, which it did. But now somehow my DOA4 DVD disk got a huuuuge scratch on it. I'm completely pissed my pants out now. AAAAAAAH!

I can't find anything about sending the disk back to get it replaced. Someone helped a chink out.

same thing happened with my gears of war so I know how fucking annoying it is. Easiest solution is don't move the console when it's turned on (it tells you not to do that in the manual supposedly) You can either buy something that cleans scratches or send it off to MS and they'll clean it

Sexy Jasper

I didn't do it when the console was on, but yeah the disc was still in it.

I know a place where they can fix these things, but the scratch is pretty deep and long. It's like a perfect circle in the middle of the disc.

Do I send it to Microsoft or Tecmo (developer of DOA) if it needs to be replaced?

Didn't they have videos on the net a year ago doing this?

shaolinsword

there should be something in the back of the manual with either a phone number or an address under troubleshooting. Your best bet is take it into the place where they can clean discs and see what they say, but if it's big and deep you might have to buy another copy of the game

yeah my mate moved my xbox when i had a game in it, and it totally fucked my copy of Blazing Angels.....hes lucky he didnt do it while my DOA was in or someone would of been gettin a slap.......

the scratch might be too bad to fix (hopefully not) but if it is you could prob pick up another copy quite cheap on ebay?

http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/Xbox-360-Game-Disc-Scratched.htm

XBox 360 games scratched? DO NOT CHANGE THE POSITION OF YOUR XBOX 360 WHILE IT IS ON WITH A DISC IN THE DRIVE OR YOU RISK POTENTIALLY DAMAGING YOUR GAME DISC.
A growing number of Xbox 360 customers are reporting having problems with their disc's getting scratched by the DVD drive when switching the unit's position from vertical to horizontal and vise versa.. Initially we thought this was the usual fanboy vs. hater propaganda that swirls around the launch of any new console like this. It didn't take long until the seriousness of the situation reared it ugly head right here in the Llamma's shop. I personally have experienced this issue not once but twice already. Here I was at a friends house helping him get this 360 all setup and networked for Live. In the process we decided to lay the Xbox on it side instead of the upright position.. I thought nothing of doing this while the unit was powered up and in the middle of a game. Big Mistake! I felt and heard the scratch happen and immediately thought; uh oh.. I think I just ruined your Call of Duty 2 buddy... sorry! You would have figured I learned my lesson and would be more careful next time I attempted something like that. Yeah.. guess not. Later on back at the Llamma shop I was taking some photos of a 360 when I decided to get a horizontal shot, again it was powered up so I made sure to do it more carefully. I guess that I was not careful enough because I got that distinct vibration and scratch noise again. There was no doubt in my mind what had just happened. I ejected the disc just to see that it was scratched like the first disc in a almost identical fashion. It will prove interesting to see if the reported Microsoft response is true or stands about replacement of the damaged game disks. Here at Llamma we just wanted to know why it was happening.
We started by disassembling of our one of our Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD drives, which happens to be the only drive in any of our 360's. Upon inspecting the laser assembly it was obvious there was only one small area that could have caused this. I applied some silver sharpie marker over the entire black laser assembly housing and reassembled the drive. I threw in the Quake 4 bonus disk and waited for the small jet to take off. After the disc spun up I went through the tilting motion a few times. Video(1.5MB): How to scratch a disc with an Xbox 360 (http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/video/Xbox-360-Scratch-Disks3.wmv)(mirrored courtesy of Xbox-Scene.com thanks!). We then disassembled the drive to find what was causing the scratches. The following photo shows exactly where the problem occurs. As you can see the black showing through the silver area that was painted.

http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/scratched-laser_small.jpg (http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/scratched-laser.jpg) More detailed view. http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/120205%20096_small.jpg (http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/120205%20096.jpg) Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD Drive Tray http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/120205%20063_small.jpg (http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/120205%20063.jpg) Fallen soldiers. There's one map I can't play on Call of Duty Live :( Microsoft does in fact say the following in the Volume 1: Setup manual that ships with the Xbox 360:

"IMPORTANT
To avoid jamming the DVD drive and damaging discs or the Xbox 360 console:

Remove discs before moving the console or tilting it between the horizontal and vertical positions.

Never use cracked discs. They can shatter inside the console and jam or break internal parts.

When the console is vertical do not use discs that are smaller the standard DVDs and CDs."
I wonder how many of us 360 owners read our manuals..lol. I guess this is a good example to do so in the future; not that it would have sunk in. I had games to play not read and learn important documentation about "the most exciting product on the planet!"
Although it should be common sense when operating a high speed disc based device like this not to move it and we are warned of the problem; it is still a surprise how easy it is. It does not take much effort to ruin one of your games by doing this. Here's a 1.5MB video clip of how easy and dramatic it is (http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/video/Xbox-360-Scratch-Disks3.wmv).
Those of us that have experienced the problem will have to pray to have our discs replaced. I'm sure we will all know Microsoft official stance on disc replacement soon. The good news is that if you don't move the unit around while a disc is in the drive you will probably never have a problem. I don't need a third strike to learn that I should not move the unit while it is powered on while a disc is in the drive. It is cool to show off how the player indicator lights move with the position of the unit... just take your disc out first ;)
**Edit 12/03/05**
People should not take this as blaming Microsoft for the problem. Again it should be common sense not to move a high speed disc device with the disc in. On the other hand it should be common sense that it's a game console, it will be moved around while its on. I think the Xbox 360 is a great console and have had absolutely NO problems with any of ours. I'm sure the majority of problems involve user error to some degree.
To discuss this topic visit this thread (http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?t=941) on our forums.

**Edit 12/04/05 **
I think we should also acknowledge that some users are experiencing scratched discs without moving their console. We have received some direct feedback from a at least two people. I imagine the vast majority are due to moving the console but the mechanics of the problem is the same. The disc spins very close to the pickup and the tray does not prevent the disc from reaching the laser pickup. If you are experiencing scratched discs without moving your console you should contact 1-800-4MYXBOX for warranty support from Microsoft.
-Llamma
If its too late for your disc and you want to get it back to top shape try out our disc repair service (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=558) we resurface your disc with our professional disc repair machine and bring it back to a like new condition. $5 for the first disc and $1 for each additional. This works for CD's, DVD's, Xbox, PS1, PS2, GameCube. Xbox 360, PC data... pretty much anything that looks like a CD.
Update! 12/06/05 How to fix the above problem.
Refurbishing the Xbox 360 DVD Drive
(to protect against scratched discs)
We found that if we added a foam rubber pad on the opposite side of the laser we could prevent the damage that would otherwise occur. Notice the arc near the top of the rubber pad in this photo? That is where the DVD now hits when we quickly tip it from a vertical to horizontal position.
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/dvd-no-scratch/120505%20001.jpg
The pad restricts the upward movement of the disc on one side of the pivot point and in turn restricts the downward movement on the other side of the pivot point.
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/dvd-no-scratch/Untitled-1.gif
We did a little digging to see what the lids of old drives look like (the HL360 drive has the rubber pad because we put them there)
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/dvd-no-scratch/120505%20005.jpg
Notice only the Thomson includes the rubber bumpers to protect the disc.
In this shot of the HL 360 lid below we can see the three black pads. The two pads across from each other should be installed about a half inch further out from the ring to optimize performance.
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/dvd-no-scratch/120505%20007.jpg
With the 3 foam rubber pads from the Thomson in place we now are unable to scratch up the disc. I'm so confident I will insert the real quake 4 disc rather than the demo disc as before.
Watch Video (http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/video/Xbox-360-No-Scratch.wmv)
Similar but softer buzz sound, but not the dramatic buzz saw we had earlier. What do you know, no scratches!
Updated 12/07/05 04:48:
A better photo to go by for proper placement of the pads.
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/images/120705%20058.jpg
The fourth pad is taller than the metal bump in the lid, this serves to significantly quiet the noise from the drive (when moving it around). Notice the width of the center pads, it is important to move them out to the edge of the tin so they will contact the disc sooner. I should also note that I tried this with a single pad at the front and we were able to scratch the disc. With the addition of the side pads at the width above I was unable to scratch a disc.
We are looking for brand new replacement pads to offer. For now, if you would like a Thomson lid to retrieve some pads from we do have a few available (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=319).

I read that Llama thing earlier today and it basically means I'm fucked. One thing though, I didn't turn the box while it was on and still I managed to get a circular scratch on the disc.

Anyway, I'm buying DOA3 or Ultimate for cheap and then I'll get DOA5 somewhere this year or next year. I downloaded the DOA4 demo a couple of minutes ago so now I can work on my skills with Kasumi, Brad Wong, Tina, Lisa and Elliot.

I'll probably never finish Oblivion and I'm bored with it too, so I might sell it or trade it for some DOA.

But you turned the box while the disc was in it. And that may have left it slightly off.

I dont know if Ultimate is all that with DOA 1 & 2. Slightly dated in comparison with 3 & 4 though. Actually I almost bought Ultimate last year. But realising it was nothing more than just Two and 1 with brushed up graphics made like mwaaaa. Looking at the unlockables now on gamefaqs, it's granted to get some time in.

It became the first DOA fighting game to be rated M, CERO 17+, and PEGI 16+ due to female characters with revealing outfits and the allusion of rape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape) in the opening cutscene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutscene).

go get a ps3 and trade in your 360, lol.

3 reasons why to get a PS3 over a 360 or Wii (in my opinion, though may differ from others):

- Tekken 6
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
- Gran Turismo 5

also, I think DOA lacks storyline-wise for the fact it doesn't have as cool of a hstory/story as Tekken does. Tekken IMO has argueably the best storyline for a fighting game ever, though they really need to work on their endings for the characters.......way too short and don't answer many questions........The primary one being why doesn't Heihachi have the devil gene? And where the fuck are some of the characters that haven't returned (Ogre especially, considering he played a vital role in the series; regardless of having a "side scrolling 3D game where u be JIn and find out more about Ogre, it still doesn't tell u very much). And wheres Jun (is she dead? alive? she keeps popping up in dreams and shit so wtf?) and whats with this "new" armoured King? (The original was killed by Marduk after Tekken 3, therefore starting the feud with "King", but in Tekken Dark Ressurection for the PSP, theres a "new" armoured King that tells u nothing about him, and in his ending he beats the shit out of "King" for some reason which makes no sense cus the old Armoured King was his mentor)
Shit needs to be worked on IMO

oh yeh, p.s. in case u didn't know they made a flick about DOA, has any1 seen it? It looks fuckin whack (as most video game films do) but the girls look pretty smokin, atleast I thought they did
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ec/DOA.jpgI didn't see the movie cause I videogame movies will never make it. Besides, the whole cast sucks. Ultra wack.

Yeah Tekken has a good storyline and I'm a huge Tekken fan. I still play Tekken 3 on my PC now and then and my little brother has Tekken Tag on the PS2. But since Tekken Tag the game has gotten worse and worse. I don't feel I need Tekken 5 or 6, because 3 is the best.

So Tekken 6 is no reason for me to get a PS3. Nor is Gran Turismo or MGS. Not my type of games. Besides, us Eurofags won't be able to get a PS3 till summer this year and still then you have to be lucky to obtain one.

I like DOA's fighting style better, because it makes more sense. And the storyline isn't that bad either. The combos are insane, especially in tag mode.

Anyway, I don't think I'll ever get a PS3.

^^haha

but seriously, jasper delete some of your pms, i need to send you one. Or get at me on aim as soon as you care. I don't know what happened haha.Ok, Christ. I cleared up and now you can pm me again everytime you mess up.

Tomorrow on 'Kassa', you know the dutch consumer program on 'Nederland 1', there will be an item on the Xbox 360. They are saying the disk scratchings are a result of an production error. Not a consumer error. You might want to look into that. Though it is said MS didn't respond.

So you should mail to xbox@vara.nl with all the info on what you was doing. They said it was a drive problem of rubbers not being present on the laser, whereas on pc drives they are present.

And offcourse Microsoft was reluctant to approach such a small local programme. It's a world wide problem. I bet they are looking for the proper solution to this problem right now. Because if if MS showed one thing in their console approach it's consumer dedication.
