It's still there, dispite protests by Native Americans.

America doesn't care. Nobody cares, evident by what people are saying here. In America, Natives are treated less than human.

"hateful creature" "your kind"

Natives have the highest suicide rate in America. I think it's all relevant, this mascot it's just an example of the kinds of stereo types and prejiduice bullshit I went though in school as a child.

I feel what you are saying, im not familiar much with american politics and such so I have to ask, are their any natives in high ranking government positions?

Are there any well known native american scholars?

What is the statistics of native americans at university?

I ask these questions because I feel that unless you have people who have important influence it is generaly hard to get noticed, despite being native to america native americans form a low percentage of the population which is why their cries and protests are not being heard; you probably have heard this already but I feel that unless natives put themselves in these prominent positions they are going to continue being unheard.

you can't change the nature of the snake. a snake is going to be a snake regardless. some snakes have poison, some squeeze you to death, some are small but vicious, some are big but are punks, but they're all snakes.

I've seen natives rock those caps....I will single out the Crees for rocking them. As well as Chicago Blackhawks, Kansas City Chiefs, and Atlanta Braves caps.

At first I only seen one native do it, then I noticed a trend that they most caps that they rocked were THOSE. I never actually asked a Native what their view on it was. When I first noticed the trend I thought they flipped the negative meaning and turned it into a joke or something.

Perhaps they were the only team caps available to them and someone else chose to distribute them? That I don't know, they could have went to any sports store and copped them.

You chose to describe these as "mascots", but some sports teams have *scary and cool* names kinda the same concept why Wu-Tang chose to call themselves the Wu-Tang Clan, cuz it was "bad" in a way.

I guess the intentions will never be known, but this concept can go both ways.

this is a toughy

stereotypes are lame

but often things like this develop in a way where the current manifestation has little if anything to do with how it originated

especially when it comes to something like this

what examples do we have in recent years?

the Washington Bullets changed their name to the Wizards
also:
no new franchise would ever come up with a name like this

that says something about how people understand sensitivities right now

Titans
Texans
Jaguars
Panthers
Diamondbacks
Rockies
Devil Rays
Marlins
Predators
Blue Jackets
Bobcats
Raptors

all the newest franchises seem to have non-controversial names

true indeed,^ I think there's even a difference from team to team. Redskin, for instance, is a derogatory term, while Braves isn't (atleast not to my knowledge) So I think the question, "is it respectfull?" is an important one.

Red Sox?
White Sox?
Knickerbockers?

Why did the Lakers keep the name Lakers when they moved to LA where there is no lakes?

I agree. It seems like natives just aren't popular in the publics eye. All the native actors only get roles in "native" films, where the movie directors(who are often native themselves) use native stereotypes for most of their main characters. The natives that do break out into mainstream(like the one native) film have to play stereotypical roles.

example: Russel Means in Natural born Killers

I think the entertainment industry is a reflection on how society sees natives, and we're rarely protrayed as leaders.

I guess the intentions will never be known, but this concept can go both ways.

For a lot of natives, it doesn't bother them......they feel the same way about it as some of the people here. While others use it as a sense of pride, showing how their pride to be native- "look at my hat, i'm indian mother fuckers"

I myself have C.S. hat made with an indian War Chief mascot. It's not from any real team but I had it made for that same reason.

true indeed,^ I think there's even a difference from team to team. Redskin, for instance, is a derogatory term, while Braves isn't (atleast not to my knowledge) So I think the question, "is it respectfull?" is an important one.

And even still, some people don't find Redskin offensive. Some people are proud of the term, others find it offensive. People's feelings are different. Point is, all natives don't feel the same about these issues.

suck it up man i make fun of black people white people chinese people indian people....man the list goes on i'm kind of a mutt so i can say all the racist terms (i'm lucky) but you dont think i get tired of being called mutt or mix breed? even if i'm mostly black.

While Little Black Sambo and the Frito Bandito have gone the way of minstrel shows, Indians are still battling a red-faced, big-nosed Chief Wahoo (http://www.bluecorncomics.com/wahoo.htm) and other stereotypes. No wonder people are confused about who Indians really are. When we're not hawking sticks of butter, or beer or chewing tobacco, we're scalping settlers. When we're not passed out drunk, we're living large off casinos. When we're not gyrating (http://www.bluecorncomics.com/stype425.htm) in Pocahoochie outfits at the Grammy Awards, we're leaping (http://www.bluecorncomics.com/mascots.htm) through the air at football games, represented by a white man in red face. One era's minstrel show is another's halftime entertainment.

I think this about sums it up.

The ultimate power and control is to define other ethnic groups and control their images

All people of color get shitted on especially when they want to preserve their identity, history, and integrity. People of color try to escape these struggles by trying to be "white" and be accepted by "whites" so they will change their views, how they talk, dress, where they go etc. etc.

As long as you're quite, they won. Keep telling about the greatness of "native americans" and you'll be victorious.

Prolifical ENG

^^^^ yeah that is true, out of these conflicts "color" is the hardest.

Even more generally, anyone who tries to preserve their culture will get shitted on and are labelled as "hardcore".

I go to some regions in Quebec I must speak in French even though they understand English clearly...or else I will not be helped....hence they are the "hardcore french people"

Everyone wants to preserve themselves from the mainstream. Whats the Canadian identity? Ask a Canadian what it is....most of them will be stumped.

EDIT, I GOT TO START FUCKING READING THE LAST PAGE BEFORE POSTING, MOTHERFUCKER...How many times have I done this?

I agree with Charging on that shit when it comes to being a bully. You're gonna get fucked up one of these days and nobody is going to have one fucking ounce of sympathy.

Either way, about the racism...yeah...Natives aren't looked at in a good light in the United States. Nobody really cares. We (whites) have your land and that's all we needed. Goodbye.

Honestly, that's not how I myself feel but that's what I think it is. I, personally respect the Natives and I think they had the right idea back in the day. They weren't gonna run out of oil, they weren't gonna be worried about nukes, and they weren't fighting over stupid bullshit. They respected the land and that's the way I think it should be.

I think deep down, white people fear Native Americans like they fear the Blacks...we fucked them hard and if anybody has a reason to be pissed...it's them.
