1. Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
Lupe's debut into the commercial music game and its a great one at that, at one point I considered Nas' album to be better, but after going back and listening to this I have changed my mind.
2. Ghostface - Fishscale
This album was really something special. The production was perfect for one, then, some how he fit 24 tracks on it and made it work, I can listen to the whole album without drifting off or losing attention, thats hard to say for some 15 song albums, let alone a 24 track album.
3. The Roots - Game Theory
The Roots discography is one of the finest around and this LP doesn't discredit it one bit. Even if its not in there top 3 best albums made, its still well worth being in the top 3 albums of 2007.
4. J Dilla - Donuts
I first heard Donuts somewhere around when it was released, I remember that I liked it, but after that I didn't listen to it real hard untill just alittle while ago, I got to say its probably one of the most addicting records i have ever listened to, because since then I have been listening to it almost everyday, anyway, bottom line, this album is pure genius (R.I.P. J Dilla).
5. Rhymefest - Blue Collar
I didn't really check this real hard till last month, I wish I would of checked it faster, because its a real dope record, it also features one of my favorite tracks from last year 'More', that defintley helped the albums placement in the top ten for me. With or without the track, this album is still very good and a breath of fresh air.
6. Louis Logic - Misery Loves Comedy
This is probably the most slept on album of 2006, not to mention it features one of my favorite songs of 2006 'A Perfect Circle' its a great track and I love the shock value the ending holds, that track alone would of put this in the top ten and the rest of the albums fantastic, so do the math.
7. Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead
Although most people put down the production, I can live with most of it, but what took this out of the top 5 for me was the 'where are they now' beat, it was extremely annoying to the point it killed alot of the mood the first half of the album had put forth. Probably the most hyped album of 2006, it may have been alittle over-hyped, but it is still a pretty decent record.
8. Hi-Tek - Hi-Teknology 2: The Chip
Another album I originally chose to sleep on last year, Hi-Teknology had Perfect production, every single song hit perfectly and it also seemed like everything was in the correct order. I loved how he put alittle R&B in the mix aswell. All in all this was a great piece of work.
9. PackFM - WutduzFMstand4
Probably my favorite album of 2006, PackFM somehow hit upon alot of subjects I am challenged with, one of the first times a whole album has done that for me actually, which is why its in my top ten.
10. Kidz In The Hall - School Was My Hustle
When I first peeked at this album I didn't have a clue what I was about to hear or if I ever was going to even listen to it, anyway I obviously decided to and thank god I did, Double o's production really compliments Naledge perfectly and naledge could of made this album decent with the worst of production, his wordplay is amazing. I see a really bright future for these two, hopefully the rest of the world does too.
I know I'm three months late, but I thought I would give you my prospective on last years best albums. I did every write up myself. If you want more articles like this check out www.illRoots.com.
