http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/05/Roots-3_44_03.jpgPeace fam,

Respeck iz long over due for these cats. When I wasn't listening to Wu from '93-'99 I was listening to BCC or The Roots. as far as Hip Hop groups are concerned. I beleive they deserve true homage in light of them completey expanding upon Hip Hop as a culture with those live instruments, soulful vibes, and intricate word play. The Roots are trully the balance in Hip Hop, with regards to Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, etc. Like Wu they've created a form of music authentic and real.

But yo, Afer "Things Fall Apart" (one of my fav albums) I slept on their subsequent albums. I only heard a few cutz from "Phrenology" and was turned off. I completely slept on "Tipping Point" and now that I finally heard A few cutz from "Game Theory" Im kickin' my self in the ass for not copping these albums!!!

Anyway, drop your comments on 'em in here. I've also added a Poll on which album you think is their best, etc.

The Roots are probably my second favourite group, i have pretty much everyone of their albums... they have 3 personal classics for me

Do You Want More!?!?
Illadelph Halflife (my favourite right now)
Things Fall Apart

Game Theory and The Tipping Point are also great, "Game Theory" had some really good tracks on it, a bit more like their older style.

Q Tip is the greatest drummer ever, and Black Thought has always seemed criminally under rated to me. his flow and lyrics have been consistently amazing since the start.

peesh.

Rahzel is solo now; I have seen him twice in concert with his Dj (JS-1 who is ill 2) I think he does alot of video game sound efx now and tours in europe. I dont even think Scratch is down anymore really

Things Fall apart is my favorite because it shows how theyv'e grown as a group, and because the sound was so raw! Plus it's just banging to me!

I like Things Fall Apart best yeah, but the top 4 for me are all really close: Things Fall Apart, Illadelph, Do You Want More??!?!?!!?!???!!!???!?!?!?!!, Game Theory

All classics to me.

^^^ Musically they are superior to WU, IMO. I mean they have and have had the whole package - just not superior in the lyrics dept. obviously.

Ooooh controversy.

At times I think there too strong musically for there own good. I mean Black Thought is one of the illest emcees out there; I have been waiting for his solo forever (Masterpiece Theatre) it was supposed to feature Rakim and Pharoahe Monch on a track (imagine those 3 together) But the last 3 Roots albums while they were excellent technically speaking -Questlove is a maestro and the rest are tight as ever- they just havent matched that feeling since 98. Anyhow they are still amazing live; I have seen a bunch of times and I just wish BT could shine on his own a bit

Hip Hop, musically, as in Jazz influenced hip hop, I AGREE.

But all of their albums Combined are not as entertaining as LS or E36C or OB4CL.

Love the Roots, definitely a classic hip-hop group throughout the years.

Favorite album would probably be Illadelph Halflife, followed by Things Fall Apart. Also Do You Want More, love the chill, night time mood on that whole album.

Saying they're musically superior to Wu...I dunno. They play live music...they're a band in a traditional sense where as Wu is consisted only of MC's...can't really compare the two.
