Pittsburgh School District Leads Nation In Ability To Spell 'Roethlisberger'

November 26, 2009 | Onion Sports (http://www.theonion.com/content/sports)
http://www.theonion.com/content/files/images/Roethilsberger.article_large.jpg

PITTSBURGH—Just four years ago, then-eighth-grader Heather Lawler had no idea how to spell Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's last name. She would often eliminate the "e" after the "o," or place an extra vowel before the "l."
Sometimes, she even wrote out the last six letters as "burger."
Now a high school senior, Lawler is just one of thousands of Pittsburgh students who will graduate with the ability to spell Roethlisberger in the 97th percentile, a statistic that puts her head and shoulders above millions of students across the United States.
"If you look at the data, our students were correctly spelling Roethlisberger only 43 percent of the time during the quarterback's rookie season," said Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who called the 2004 statistic an embarrassment. "In just five years, we have increased that number to 92 percent. That's 54 percent better than students in California, 35 percent better than those in Oklahoma, and 96 percent better than those in the Cleveland area, who tend to spell Roethlisberger by adding the letters 'u,' 'c,' and 'k' after the letter 's.'"
"The bottom line is the Pittsburgh school system is giving its students a leg up on the competition, not only in America, but throughout the world," Ravenstahl added. "Our kids correctly spelled Roethlisberger 12 times more often than all the students in Europe and Asia combined."
Pittsburgh teachers said that in 2005 they noticed an alarming trend: Students stopped using Roethilsberger's last name in essays and papers, instead referring to the quarterback by his easy-to-spell nickname, "Big Ben." That summer, the Pittsburgh school board took action, eliminating various art courses, American history, and Advanced Placement calculus in favor of a rigorous new curriculum focused squarely on getting its students back on track.
Instead of taking world history, seventh-graders were enrolled in Spelling Roethlisberger I. Geometry and trigonometry were replaced by Advanced Roethlisberger-Memorizing. And rather than "waste time," as Ravenstahl said, in AP chemistry and English, juniors and seniors were required to take an intensive Roethlisberger colloquia, in which they would spend a three-hour class period not only discussing the spelling of Roethlisberger, but the spelling of the names of other Steelers players, such as strong safety Troy Polamalu and left guard Chris Kemoeatu.
According to biology teacher Mark Irwin, who also serves as an interdisciplinary Interpretations of the Spelling of Roethlisberger IV instructor, the current curriculum gives graduating students the skills essential to becoming contributing members of the Pittsburgh community.
"When I was in school, every single one of us knew how to spell Bradshaw," Irwin told reporters. "Granted, Roethlisberger is more difficult, but the world in general is becoming an increasingly demanding place, and we have to prepare our students to meet that demand."
"I'm just happy with how the parents have taken initiative on the home front," Irwin added. "Some of these kids come into eighth grade already knowing how to spell Roethlisberger, which makes things a lot easier on us, and allows teachers to develop their skills even further."
High school principal Dr. Allen Pembrook said that seniors in his school spend the entire second half of the year gearing up to take their RSATs, or Roethlisberger Standardized Assessment Test. During this time, all other courses—even Steelers Defenses 1970 to Present—take a backseat as students prepare for the 17-question exam.
"The first three questions are pretty easy," said high school senior Brent Gerson, referring to the portion of the test in which students are asked to give the first letter of the quarterback's first name, then the second, the third, and so on. "The last 14 questions about the last name are pretty hard. There is no letter bank or anything, and it's graded on full completion. But if you remember what you worked on for the last six years, and the student sitting in front of you remembers to wear his Roethlisberger jersey, you should be fine."
Thus far the new curriculum has paid off for students entering the job market, especially those who wish to remain in the city after graduation.
"If you ask me if I would rather hire a kid from Boston with a 4.0 GPA who puts a 'u' after the 'b' in Roethlisberger, or a kid who can spell the name correctly, I'm going to hire the kid who can spell Roethlisberger," said Pittsburgh attorney Martin Snyder, adding that clients in Southwestern Pennsylvania appreciate, above all, a lawyer with a working knowledge of how to spell the names of the entire 2005 Super Bowl team. "Anyone can go to law school and pass a bar exam, but knowing that there is a silent 'h' after the 'w' in Cowher? Well, that takes somebody special."http://www.theonion.com/content/themes/onion/assets/terminator.gif

the beat the Jaguars who suck, the Niners who sucks, the Bills who are horrible, the Texans who dont play defense and the Cardinals without Kurt Warner.

When Vince beats somebody decent, let me know and maybe i'll give him some credit, but truthfully its been all Chris Johnson.

Come Honor Face
12-02-2009, 09:34 PM
Chris Johnson is without a doubt the franchise for the Titans. I am not claiming Vince is. I am simply pointing out that you aren't giving Vince enough credit. For example, on that 99 yard game winning drive, Chris Johnson touched the ball 0 times. That was all Vince, and Kenny Britt. Vince is much better than you are willing to admit. Again, he is not an elite QB, but he is very good, not average. That's all. He does in fact win games. He just did it 3 days ago.

Olive Oil Goombah
12-02-2009, 10:38 PM
he's average...the factg that he can run makes him potentially above average, BUT he still is not a true QB. he does not possess the qb skills that all the greats possess, and i dont think he will ever acquire them.

Look, Trent Dilfer won a super bowl being average.

Thats how Vince will win one, if he is ever on a team good enough.

Come Honor Face
12-03-2009, 07:17 AM
Did Trent Dilfer ever win any awards or play in the Pro Bowl in the NFL? Dilfer was no Vince Young. I like how you set up your excuse for Vince winning a Super Bowl if he does. I don't believe you would change your opinion of him if he won MVP's and multiple Super bowls.

Olive Oil Goombah
12-03-2009, 08:47 AM
I would but I KNOW its not going to happen UNLESS he plays on a team that is so great that he doesnt have to be responsible for winning games himself.

My point is that any average QB can pull that off during the regular season.

Im saying he CAN'T and WON'T do that against elite teams or in the playoffs.

bill simmons in his nfl power rankings...

THE ROD MARINELLI DIVISION

32. Cleveland
First, the Cavs choke in the 2009 playoffs. Second, the best two starters on the 2008 Indians start Game 1 of the 2009 World Series for two teams not named "Cleveland." Third, the Browns clean house and hire Eric Mangini, who takes that same house and sets it on fire with a flame thrower. Fourth, what could end up being LeBron's final Cavs season is distinguished early by Shaq looking like a bald Aretha Franklin and LeBron's body language occasionally lapsing into "I can't wait to find a new team; I am tired of playing with crap teammates" mode. And fifth, there are two nights of star-studded concerts to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- located in Cleveland, as you know -- and those concerts happen at Madison Square Garden.

Here's my question, God: What did Cleveland do to you?

-Chicago bar visit leaves Steelers fan blind

CHICAGO – Almost three months have passed, and the Chicago Police Department appears no closer to solving one of the most bizarre acts of fan-on-fan violence in recent memory. One that left Pittsburgh Steelers fan Zack Heddinger blind, and local authorities searching for a group of Chicago Bears fans that allegedly poisoned him.

The frustrating search for clues began a few days after Heddinger passed out at South Loop bar Kitty O’Shea’s, and was taken to Rush University Medical Center following Chicago’s Sept. 20 win over Pittsburgh at Soldier Field. After drinking alcohol that was allegedly offered by a Bears fan, Heddinger blacked out and later went into cardiac arrest while being rushed by ambulance to an emergency room. Heddinger eventually went blind, and doctors began to suspect he had been poisoned with some form of toxic grain alcohol. Almost three months later, Chicago Police are still attempting to sort out exactly what happened on the day Heddinger’s nightmare began.

“I don’t remember anything from that night, beforehand or after,” said Heddinger, who suffered some brain damage in the incident. “I really can’t remember a whole lot about any of it.”

Heddinger arrived in Chicago as part of a trip he and friends take annually to see a Steelers road game. Heddinger, 46, traveled with companions to Kitty O’Shea’s for drinks after Pittsburgh’s loss, friends told the police. According to an incident report, a few of Heddinger’s friends engaged some Bears fans in trash talking. Later in the night, one of the Chicago fans offered Heddinger’s friend an unspecified drink as a gesture of goodwill. He refused, but witnesses told police Heddinger stepped in and offered to take the drink.

“It’s a horrifying, horrifying ordeal,” said Victor Hunter Pribanic, a Pittsburgh area lawyer who has been retained by Heddinger. “… One of the Chicago guys bought a drink for one of Zack’s companions, who was the one who was really engaged in the argument with [the Chicago fans]. This guy declined it, and Zack, trying to be the peacemaker, said ‘Oh, I’ll take it.’ He drank it, and that’s the only thing that distinguished him through the night from the other [Pittsburgh fans] who were not similarly affected.”

Not long after taking the drink, Heddinger blacked out and was rushed to the hospital. Along the way, his heart stopped several times and paramedics had to resuscitate him. Initially, doctors thought it was merely a case of a fan drinking himself to the brink of death, but after further tests and Heddinger’s ensuing blindness, they suspected a type of extremely toxic grain alcohol.

“It’s likely something that contained the kind of alcohol that is in antifreeze and that kind of thing,” Pribanic said. “You know those old stories about drinking moonshine and it making you go blind? Well they’re true if it’s the wrong kind of alcohol. That seems to be the leading theory.”

Once doctors began to suspect poisoning and the events of the night were pieced together, police were contacted and an investigation began. But months later, arrests still haven’t been made, and while Pribanic said he believed a person of interest had been identified, a Chicago Police department source denied that to Yahoo! Sports. The source would only say that an investigation was ongoing and that detectives were still investigating what happened inside Kitty O’Shea’s on Sept. 20.

“There have been no developments as far as I know,” Heddinger said. “They pretty much don’t think they’re going to find out what happened with it. They went into it knowing they weren’t going to find out a lot. I am [disappointed], but at this point what am I going to do? I’m working on getting healthy.”

Pribanic said he is “aware that police have a [security] tape” from the bar. Kitty O’Shea’s is actually part of Chicago’s downtown Hilton Hotel, and a hotel spokesman said they are fully cooperating with the investigation.

What happens now is unclear. Pribanic is collecting information from the hospital and waiting for the Chicago police department to conclude their investigation before the family weighs its options and decides how to proceed. However, he said he wouldn’t rule out potential litigation against either Kitty O’Shea’s, Hilton, or even Rush Medical Center.

“That’s certainly a possibility,” Pribanic said. “Assuming there was something placed in the drink, if the bartender was involved, the hotel could bear some responsibility. As far as the hospital, if it was some condition that they should have picked up on and assessed and diagnosed and treated, there is also that potential. I’m investigating both of those areas for Zack, obviously.”

Though Heddinger is employed in management by a jewelry company, he didn’t have health insurance at the time of the incident, and said he has not been able to work since the incident. He is living back in Pennsylvania with the help of family, and undergoing treatments to help regain his eyesight.

“I’ve gained some of it back. It’s not at the rate I want to get it back, but it is coming little by little,” Heddinger said. “I’m doing hyperbaric oxygen treatments. I’m actually on my way for one right now. “[The jewelry company] is holding my position for me right now, but I don’t know how much longer that is going to last. All I can do is get healthy.”

cletus, this must be a typo. only the 2 best teams from last year are missing the playoffs... the steelers and ravens... the colts will make it this year.

You're right. The team that had the the best record in the NFL last year, and beat the shit out of the Colts and the Steelers head to head doesn't deserve to be mentioned before the Colts. lol BTW, the Titans were 1-1 vs. the Ravens last year, and the Ravens had zero chance at winning that playoff game in Nashville before they "took out" Chris Johnson. Then again, you only said that to try to get under my skin. You aren't stupid enough to believe that anyway.

yea, yea it was a nice little win but we are still pathetic and im not one of those Browns fans who thought this was our super bowl.

Football is overrated in person anyway. Much better on the hd tv.

I Agree First Time I Went To A Football Game I Wasnt Impressed Ultimate Tv Sport To Me. It's Cool Taking In The Experience And Being With The Fans But The Actual Game Is Better On Tv. Where As Baseball Is 10 Times Better Live.

Browns Take Down The Reigning Super Bowl Champions Two Years In A Row In Primetime Thats Got To Be Maddening. If They Would Show Up Like That Every Sunday Maybe They Would Have A Much Better Record. I'm Not Saying A Contender Or Anything But Just Give Better Effort And Not Be Bottom Feeders.

well, finally they USE Cribbs and let the young guys run the ball.

I think Quinn sucks and unfortunately i think he is going to be our QB next year.

You can always draft Jimmy Clausen and keep that ND QB thing going.

Just don't take Jake Locker if he goes pro dammit.

i want them to draft Suh from Nebraska, switch to a 4-3 and dominate the trenches with Suh and Shaun Rogers.....then draft a safety or a linebacker with the second pick.

13-0

peyton had a horrible second half but he did what he had to do when he needed to do it and completed that game clinching drive.

i hope the colts dont decide to shut it down and instead go for 16-0.

whoever thought faith hill does a better intro to a football game than hank williams jr should be fuckin shot.

the Texans were beastin the seahawks today. Winning out will be rough with the patriots and dolphins still left but I hope we get there. We've been in every loss this season excluding the opener against the jets. A winning season should guarantee that kubiak keeps his job. Sometimes it just takes a while to learn how to win close games and we're right on the cusp of greatness. Firing the coach would be a mistake.

Fuck The Eagles I Swear The Giants Owe Them One Big Time. Fuckin Sheridan Is Awful I Understand The Players Have To Play Better But When There Just Lookin Confused Out There Thats On The Coach.

I Usually Give Gilbride Shit And That Draw On 3rd In 5 Made Me Throw Up His Offense Did Put Up What 38 Points Or Something Like That So I Wont Get On Him.

If Dallas Beats New Orleans I'll Just Have To Laugh If They Do That They Deserve To Make The Playoffs. Hopefully They Dont Because I Think The Giants Win The Next Three I Dont Know Why But I Honestly Do.
