Heading to the Hall of Fame:

================================================== ==============
ST. LOUIS (AP)—Wide receiver Isaac Bruce(notes), whose four Pro Bowls firmly established him among the greatest players in Rams history, retired Wednesday with a message for a struggling franchise that has hit bottom: Be proud of who you are.

“I’d would say, ‘Watch your mouth,”’ Bruce said of advice he would offer the Rams. “Watch what you say about the team and the organization. And expect great things to happen.”

The 37-year-old Bruce is retiring after 16 seasons in which he set virtually every franchise receiving record. He’s second in the NFL in career receiving yards with 15,208, tied for second in yards per catch (14.9), fifth in catches (1,024) and ninth in receiving touchdowns (91). He also helped the Rams win the Super Bowl in 2000.

The Rams will honor Bruce by retiring his No. 80 on Oct. 31 during a game against Carolina.

“He was one of the guys, early in my career, that showed me what it meant to be an NFL player and how to work to become the best,” former teammate Kurt Warner(notes) said in a statement.

Bruce was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1994, the year before they moved to St. Louis. He came to a team that was among the worst in the NFL—a situation the current Rams, including No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford(notes)— can relate to: St. Louis was 1-15 in 2009.

Bruce only played on losing teams until 1999, when the arrival of Warner at quarterback, Marshall Faulk(notes) at running back and rookie Torry Holt(notes) as his counterpart at wide receiver helped to create the “Greatest Show on Turf.” The Rams went 13-3 and defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in a dramatic Super Bowl, with Bruce scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the final 2 minutes.

He recalled that pivotal play as “slow motion,” seeing Warner under pressure and having his arm hit as he let the ball go. Bruce adjusted to the underthrow and made the catch.

“I saw smoke in the air from the halftime show,” he recalled. “I just kept my eyes on the football. It was like it was taking forever to get to me. When I caught the football, everything was in slow motion for me, but pretty much everyone around me was running fast.”

Dick Vermeil coached St. Louis to a 9-23 record in two seasons before the 1999 turnaround.

“It was a great experience for both of us to work together, to grow together and go through the frustrations of losing to turn that program around, then share a world championship together,” Vermeil told The Associated Press. “I think it was so deserving that he be the guy that makes the difference.”

Former teammates and coaches recalled Bruce’s professionalism and work ethic.

“To me he was a complete receiver,” said Mike Martz, the offensive coordinator in 1999 and the Rams’ head coach in 2000-05. “The other part of him, the humility that he played his entire career with, spoke so well about who he is as a man.”

Bruce recalled another former Rams receiver, Jack Snow, taking him aside not long after Bruce was chosen in the second round out of Memphis in the 1994 draft. The Rams were terrible, but Snow told him he was willing to fight anyone who ran down his organization.

“We came to this organization that was at the bottom of the barrel,” Bruce said. “At that moment I knew this was where I was supposed to be.”

Bruce spent the past two seasons in San Francisco. The 49ers agreed to allow the Rams to acquire Bruce on Monday so he could retire with the organization where he played 14 seasons.

Bruce said he doesn’t know exactly what he’ll do next, but he believes his career is worthy of the Hall of Fame.

“I do believe in the next five years we’ll be loading up trucks and we’ll be heading to Canton,” he said.

32 nfl teams x 61 players (53 man roster +8 practice squad) = 1952 nfl players (not to mention IR players). let's assume 1,500 of those frequent strip clubs. plus the fact that they have a lot of money and are on the road a lot so they probably patronize strip clubs more than most.

so a couple of guys out of 1,500 have a problem at a strip club once in their life and you want to ban strip clubs now?

Steelers Nation Mourns Loss Of Kaye Cowher

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―

http://www.newsoxy.com/images/0724/kaye-cowher.jpg

The Steelers Nation is in mourning today following the death of Kaye Cowher, the wife of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, after a private battle with cancer.

She was 54.

During her husband's 15 years with the Steelers, Kaye Cowher spent most of the time out of the spotlight; but she was never far from the mind of her husband.

After reaching the pinnacle of his NFL career with the Super Bowl XL victory after 14 seasons spent coaching the Steelers, so many thoughts must have flooded his mind -- from the years of frustration to the hardships endured.

He would later tell KDKA that he knew it had all taken a toll – especially on his wife and daughters. "They were dealing with it out in the public, where we're more isolated; 'cause we just go to work every day and we work seven days a week in that building, where our families are out in the public and they have to deal with all the scrutiny."

"The week of the playoff games, I certainly didn't go to Giant Eagle every day," Kaye Cowher said during an interview with Bob Pompeani, "because that's where I get attacked the most, in the produce aisle! 'Who's he gonna play, Deuce or Jerome?' I'm like, 'I don't know!'"

Bill Cowher and Kaye Young met at North Carolina State in the mid 1970s. She was a basketball star; he was a linebacker.

They had three daughters -- each a gifted athlete.

Kaye spent a lot of time coaching her girls; but resisted any temptation to armchair coach the Steelers. "Oh absolutely not," she laughed during a KDKA interview. "No, we enjoy it!"

"I've always said Kaye's got a pretty good perspective of things," her husband chimed in, "and she's got a good feel -- she's been in athletics, has a good feel for the game, so I mean I kinda use her as a sounding board a lot, pretty often -- not so much from a play selection standpoint, just kinda from an approach standpoint"

From whatever standpoint, she was fully involved on game days as she described to Patti Burns before her husband's first trip to the Super Bowl in 1996. "Oh, I'll be a nervous wreck as usual!"

"Something about game days," she added. "My husband has this natural calm about him; I think that he works so hard during the course of the week in preparation that on game days he's calm and collected and I'm the nervous wreck in the family! I can't wait for it to start and I can't wait for it to be over but I know our team will show up and they'll play hard."

Kaye Cowher worked hard for charities including Family Resources, which focuses on child abuse prevention. "I know that our family is strong and solid," she told KDKA during a fundraiser, "and I would like to see every family have some of the things that we all want for our kids."

It was their family that Bill Cowher said led him to leave the Steelers in 2007.

"The only sidelines I'm gonna be sitting on will be probably up in the stands, watching my kids play basketball in the next couple of years, so I'm looking forward to that," he said during a news conference announcing his resignation.

Maybe the decision to leave was his alone; maybe not.

"I'm looking forward to the years when the girls are in college and Bill and I have more time together," Kaye told KDKA a few years earlier, "so don't expect to see him on the sideline at 67 like Marv Levy! No! I said it here!"

To that, her husband jokingly replied, "I have no choice!"

As he left the Steelers in January of 2007, Cowher thanked his wife of more than two decades.

"To my wife, my soul mate and my friend: the sacrifice that she's made and the love and support that she has given me through the years, she's been my backbone."

Kaye Cowher is survived by her husband, Bill, their three daughters, Meagan, Lauren and Lindsay, and a twin sister, Faye.

The Cowher family is asking for privacy at this difficult time and they have not released any information on Kaye's death.

A service is scheduled to take place on Monday in North Carolina.

The Cowher family is asking that anyone interested in making a donation direct it to Family Resources of Pennsylvania:

Bengals president hints at contract offer to T.O.

NFL.com
Published: July 26, 2010 at 01:26 p.m.
Updated: July 26, 2010 at 03:16 p.m.

Cincinnati Bengals (http://www.nfl.com/teams/cincinnatibengals/profile?team=CIN) president Mike Brown confirmed his team's interest in free-agent wide receiver Terrell Owens (http://www.nfl.com/players/terrellowens/profile?id=OWE755129) on Monday and indicated that an offer had been made.
"It's up to him," Brown said at the Bengals' training-camp media luncheon. "We are talking to him. We have some interest."

Unlock HQ Video (http://www.nfl.com/widgets/videos/downloader?template=basic-html&confirm=true&icampaign=VG_Player_Link_HQ_DL)HQ video delivered by Akamai

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported Saturday (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d819483f6/article/source-report-of-rams-seriously-pursuing-to-overzealous) that the Bengals and the St. Louis Rams (http://www.nfl.com/teams/st.louisrams/profile?team=STL) are two of several teams that have maintained contact with Owens this offseason.
The Bengals initially expressed interest in signing the six-time Pro Bowl receiver when he met with the team in March, with Brown telling the team's official Web site (http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Brown-confirms-TO-interest-hints-at-offer/2a0291d8-834a-4d34-b87a-049864a31148) that "I found him polite, nothing that has been said about him. We like him as a player." But later that day, the Bengals signed wide receiver Antonio Bryant (http://www.nfl.com/players/antoniobryant/profile?id=BRY210393), which seemed to diminish the chance that Owens would join the team and his friend, Chad Ochocinco (http://www.nfl.com/players/chadochocinco/profile?id=JOH104425), who are both represented by agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Ochocinco has aggressively taken to Twitter (http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/07/24/ochocinco-says-t-o-will-be-a-bengal-others-disagree/) all offseason to push for Owens' signing.
"Coming soon to a city near you if your playing the Bengals, Batman = T.O. Robin = Esteban," Ochocinco tweeted Saturday, not long after he wrote: “Be blessed today folks, i am so excited for training camp, especially since Batman is coming to join me."
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis denied to the team's official Web site last week that the team needed Owens (http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Lewis-defends-Benson-Smith-ready-but-has-to-earn-start/11c91861-e755-4b46-b9e1-bfeebe6dbfce), saying "I don't want to speak (about Terrell). We've been down that road. I don't have a concern that we need to add anybody (at receiver)." But on Monday, Lewis changed his tune, saying the Bengals' goals and Owens' goals "match up."
Brown also was asked Monday about a contract extension for Lewis, who has one year remaining on his current deal, but didn't reveal much.
"Marvin knows I hold him in high regard," Brown said. "But it's an internal matter and I won't discuss it (publicly)."

Owens, the outspoken wide receiver and reality TV star, agreed to a one-year contract with the Bengals, a team source told NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi on Tuesday.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora confirmed that Owens will be paid $2 million in base salary and could earn an additional $2 million in incentives. Owens received $6.5 million from the Buffalo Bills last season.

Ya'll ever watch those Classic games? On SunSports I always see old classic Florida and FSU games. Now CSS has been showing classic college games as well and also FSN has been doing it too.

Normally, I would agree with you. Not in this instance. The Seahawks would have absolutely won that game if the officiating was done right. I remember being shocked at the way everyone just kind of had a "Oh well" kind of attitude about it afterwards. I was outraged, and I don't even like the Seahawks. Honestly, I nearly stopped watching the NFL. I admit I enjoy it too much to stop, but that made me consider it. The Steelers had a great season, but they had no business holding that trophy up after that game. Shit made me sick!

Does Terrell Owens deserve to be in the Hall of Fame?

"Absolutely not,” a long-time NFL team personnel executive said recently when asked if Owens deserved a spot in the Hall of Fame. Another prominent team executive echoed that, calling Owens a “figment.”

“I think he is so overblown statistics-wise, it’s unbelievable,” the first executive said. “If you play long enough, you’re going to have stats. He’s playing long enough and he’s got stats and now he has another gig, so there are more stats coming. But he’s no more a Hall of Famer than this bottle of water.

If TO retired 3 years ago he probably had a better chance of making the Hall. I doubt that quote came from a real nfl executive. Either the writer made that up or some teams ball boy said it.

TO used to put up huge numbers. It has nothing to do with longevity. The last few years, his numbers have been way down, so that quote isn't even factually correct.

Unlike that puss-ass Patriots d-line did in Super Bowl 42. If you ask me, the Giants took Brady's ass out and he hasn't done SHIT since that game. Keep it up son, worrying about the God in a complete different conference than yours.

Im hoping the Giants turn things around this year. Establish the better, and hopefully the defense will be MUCH better. And steady progress from Eli

Eli had a breakout year that was MAD underrated last year. Nicks and Manningham seem to be ready to bust out this year, especially Nicks. It's still preseason, but if Pierre-Paul is as good as I've been hearing than the D-Line will be back to b-i in Giants land. The offense will be good. I'm really worried about the defense more than the o.

I got to catch a fews plays ..That Cody kid from BAMA looks like he's be a beast this year..

I saw like a drive of that game... the one that I did, Harbough[sp?] had to pull Cody aside and school the kid. He kinda fucked up. But I think he can do big things in the league if he has his head in the game.

Yeah. I always felt bad for Jason Campbell cause it wasn't that he sucked, he didn't have any protection. He couldn't even get set to look down the field.

Same here. I always thought Campbell could do big things in the league, but he was always the scapegoat in Washington. They have had a shitty OLine for years now, and he never had the protection like you said. Portis has been banged up. They have McNabb for now.. but that's a short term solution. Big time problems for Washington after they realize McNabb will not bring them the Lombardi.

Return trip? Favre boards plane, reportedly to Minnesota

Brett Favre (http://www.nfl.com/players/brettfavre/profile?id=FAV540222) is on a plane heading north, a source told NFL Network's Scott Hanson. Could it be bringing Favre back to Minnesota? Signs point to yes.
The Biloxi Sun Herald cited a "highly placed source" in reporting (http://www.sunherald.com/2010/08/17/2411337/report-three-vikings-sent-to-visit.html?storylink=addthis#ixzz0wtK1eUGW) that the plane is taking Favre and his wife, Deanna, to Minnesota so the quarterback can announce his return for a 20th NFL season.
Also on board are three of Favre's closest friends on the Vikings -- defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson (http://www.nfl.com/players/stevehutchinson/profile?id=HUT173616) and kicker Ryan Longwell (http://www.nfl.com/players/ryanlongwell/profile?id=LON819356) -- who traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., to try to convince the quarterback to come back, "The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. (http://www.wutang-corp.com/forum/_1";return)

Unlock HQ Video (http://www.nfl.com/widgets/videos/downloader?template=basic-html&confirm=true&icampaign=VG_Player_Link_HQ_DL)HQ video delivered by Akamai

The Star Tribune confirmed that Allen, Hutchinson and Longwell didn't attend practice Tuesday, nor were they at morning team meetings. None of the three has battled injuries during training camp or missed any practices.
Minutes after Hanson's report, Favre's official Web site sent an e-mail to members of the media, saying: "Stay tuned for breaking news from the Minnesota Vikings (http://www.nfl.com/teams/minnesotavikings/profile?team=MIN) today on Brett Favre's possible return."
Favre has wavered all summer on whether or not to return. He created a firestorm when he reportedly texted some Vikings teammates and team officials Aug. 2, saying he would retire because his left ankle hadn't responded to offseason surgery as well as he had hoped.
Favre's agent, Bus Cook, said the next day that the 40-year-old signal-caller will play if his surgically repaired ankle is healthy enough.
During Hall of Fame weekend, Favre texted NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci that the ankle still was giving him problems (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8199688e/article/message-to-mariucci-favres-arm-is-great-but-ankle-still-hurts).
"His arm feels great," said Mariucci, who was Favre's quarterback coach in Green Bay. "His conditioning is good, but he hasn't run much without pain in his ankle. It still gives him pain, and it needs to be better before he reports."
With Favre under center last season, the Vikings finished 12-4, won their second consecutive NFC North title and advanced to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints (http://www.nfl.com/teams/neworleanssaints/profile?team=NO) in overtime.

Percy Harvin collapses at practice

Associated Press

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/min/minnesota-vikings) wide receiver Percy Harvin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12569) was taken to a hospital by ambulance after collapsing at Thursday's practice, and coach Brad Childress said Harvin suffered another migraine headache attack.
Harvin, who has dealt with migraines most of his life, has been unable to practice for most of training camp because of the headaches and their debilitating symptoms.

Harvin returned to the field on Monday after missing more than two weeks, but at the beginning of Thursday's workout he experienced another episode that was scary enough for the Vikings to halt practice while their teammate received medical attention.
Childress said that Harvin's episode was triggered when he looked up into a mostly cloudy sky to field a punt during a special teams drill. Harvin went inside to see team physician Dr. Sheldon Burns, then came back out to the field.
At that point, Harvin doubled over and was seen trembling, before players and coaches stood in front of him for privacy while reporters watched from a distance.
"I don't know how they classify it," Childress said. "Not really a seizure, but he had some trouble over here. I'd be remiss if I tried to qualify it one way or another. It seemed like he was stable."
The Vikings continued with practice for about five minutes while Harvin was being worked on, then drills were stopped while the situation was sorted out. After Harvin was loaded into the ambulance, the Vikings gathered on the field and took a knee in prayer. They resumed their work for a few more minutes before calling practice over at least an hour early.
The ambulance did not leave right away after Harvin was loaded, and it left without sirens sounding or lights flashing. Though the situation didn't appear grave, it was clearly somber.
"Obviously that one hit, and it hit hard," Childress said. "It's always scary for all of our guys when you see a teammate struggling with whatever."

Giants add three-time Pro Bowler Andrews to offensive line

Associated Press
Published: Aug. 20, 2010 at 11:09 a.m.
Updated: Aug. 20, 2010 at 10:14 a.m.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The New York Giants (http://www.nfl.com/teams/newyorkgiants/profile?team=NYG) have signed three-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.
The Giants announced the signing Friday. They waived offensive lineman Cliff Louis (http://www.nfl.com/players/clifflouis/profile?id=LOU654677) to clear space on the roster.

The 16th pick in the 2004 draft, Andrews started 50 games with the Philadelphia Eagles (http://www.nfl.com/teams/philadelphiaeagles/profile?team=PHI) from 2004-08. He played two games last season before missing the rest of the year with a back injury.
The 27-year-old missed more than two weeks of training camp last year because of personal problems. He was released by the Eagles in March.
Andrews played in the Pro Bowl in 2005, '06 and '07.

Yeah the Bills suck for the last few years but tailgate parties are highly rated amongst NFL cities.

From Toronto to Buffalo its a 90 minute drive.

Canadians make up a good share of people attending Bills games...maybe 20%....same goes for Detroit games. Thats why 2 times a year the Bills have a home game in Toronto...but they suck since they overprice the tickets and you cant tailgate properly but they make a ton of money off of it. Last game vs Miami in Toronto there were as many Dolphins fans as Bills fans.

As of last year you do need a passport when you drive across the Can/USA boarder.

Before you only needed a drivers license and birth certificate that proved you were a Canadian citizen born in Canada. Sometimes they wouldnt even check your ID (if you look like a normal black or white person) and just ask you where you were born, where you're going, how long you are staying and what you are planning on bringing back and they would let you through. If you were born in any other country you would need a passport. And if your passport said you are from Baghdad, you will be flagged for sure.

Well, you need to check everyone when going across a boarder...especially when there are terrorists trying to get in and people smuggling shit back and forth (cheap alcohol into Canada and Cuban cigars into USA)....its serious business.

A few white people heading to and from a football game is usually pretty quick and not likely to get flagged.

Well our basketball team didn't so much leave as get stolen. Not that the idiots that run Seattle helped at all.

Yes, the Mariners have been putting up another epic fail of a season. Going to the games is still fun though, in my opinion. The whole Griffey thing was handled horribly and the clubhouse never recovered. Not that we were hitting before that either.

For what is worth the Mariners aren't going anywhere. I'd put anything on that. Nintendo isn't going to move the Mariners from Seattle. When there almost moved before, it was because of the ownership.

The reason Seattle didn't stand a chance to keep the Sonics was they were backed into a corner about a new arena, Safeco and Qwest are still very new buildings. Although it is ironic that now that the Sonics left an upgrade to Key Arena would work.

I guess the reason it doesn't seem as bad, is Jim Mora is no longer our coach. I really, really dislike that guy, so not having to listen to his ramblings every post-game is good news. I'm not real convinced of what Pete Carroll will do, but so far he has backed up his declarations, and it looks like we accept that we are rebuilding, something that wasn't as evident under the previous regime.

Jim Mora talked about improving our running game, but kept running our least productive back(Julius Jones-whom I've grown to dislike so much I cut him from my Franchise in Madden). Pete Carroll speaks of improving the running game, he drafts a LT, Alex Gibbs, and takes a flyer on Leon Washington. That gives me some optimism that we might turn it around sooner rather than later, but not likely in 2010.

Such is life as a fan of Seattle Sports, however, and I am used to it. The good news is our division is so bad that it will most likely be us or the 49ers that go and lose in the first round of the playoffs this year.

Ok so I'm gonna totally sound like a girl right now.....in normal people terms, what does a lockout mean? I've read it but it doesn't register.

hectis
08-29-2010, 04:06 PM
a lockout is when the owners stop the players from plying, because they think they are getting payed too much this is going to happen in the nfl because they have no collective bargaining agreement after this season so their will be no salary cap and the owners dont want the nfl to get like MLB so they are going to simply lock the players out until they agree on a new deal which as it looks now won't be happening and if you think it's going to hurt the nfl teams well it wont because they teams will still make 5 billion due to the fact they still get paid from the networks no matter if their is a lockout, or not (the networks must feel like dumb asses for making that deal)

hectis
08-29-2010, 04:08 PM

Queen Of Poetry
08-29-2010, 04:22 PM
So the owners literally lock the players out in order that the players will take a pay cut..........so if the players don't agree, then the season won't happen? Well that sucks.........r u serious? So it will be all on the players............I mean if there isn't a season, then the players don't get paid............ugh

From the sounds of things, this will happen after this season.

Thanks for explaining that to me.

hectis
08-29-2010, 05:11 PM
yes and no it is really on both sides to come to a fair deal like maybe change how contracts work, because the NFL is the only one of the 4 major American sports that does not have a guaranteed contract so when u see john doe signs a 5 year 44 million dollar deal well if he is cut because of injury, or what ever he does not get paid (that's also why guaranteed money is always a big thing in NFL contracts) also I think health insurance for after you retire is something they are working on. right now you only get five years coverage after you retire, but the effects of an NFL career are not shown until well after five years and they should copy other sports like MLB and cover for life

I think if a new deal is reached we will also see a change in the rookie contracts and I am all for it, because there is no way a rookie should be making more than a proven NFL player I mean sam braford makes more than tom brady that is just wrong
