I am a big Kung fu fan. The list is just in my opinion and most have been let down by crap choreography(Shaws)and or just generally a crap film.

I generally find alot of Shaw bro's films overrated and then you have the independent cheap films which tend to be crap but there are some brilliant ones. And Golden harvest(Or independent films done by Sammo and Co)tend to be good. :)

..All different opinions. :)

Shaw fights are very Staticy and stocky(Particularly the Venoms), they're still prett y good though.. The fight scenes are good, but the actual Choreography isn't very good, eg: 5 Fingers of death(King boxer, Utter dire Choreography, It has choreography equal to a hollywood film, just standard boring fight scenes, I wanna see Kung fu! ..But then films like the Prodigal son show very good choreography, as well as The Victim(I love Wilson tong in this film, his footwork is amazing) and Snake in the eagles shadow etc..:)

Kinda hurt me a bit that you gave Kid with the Golden Arm a "don't bother" rating, kinda rought, but its all good.

I know what you mean though about the choreography in the shaws brothers (SB) movies. Thats why I always seperated SB movies into two groups, the venoms group and all their supporting cast members vs. Gordon Liu and all his supporting cast members (would include Wang Lung Wei, etc.)

Realize that the choreography for these two groups were usually done by different people. Its always been my opinion that the venom movies are usually more story driven, and use lots of acrobatics, and are a lot less strict in terms of using actual movements/forms/techniques of real styles.

Most of the SB movies starring the Gordon Liu group were choreographed by Liu Chia Liang. He really knows his kung fu, for real, he's serious with his, and I think that shows in the movies he directs/choreographs (invincible pole fighters for example).

Peace

Peace Yeah, fair enough.. I agree about the Venoms and more story based, that's why I like the films.. Although I think they're choreography is better than most of the other Shaw stuff, albeit stocky.

I just prefer the more technical stuff, like in The Victim or the others I mentioned before. :)

S'all good.

Hello,
I have a question for you kung fu fanatics. I've been buying a lot of the Walgreens dvds and I came across the kung fu madman Elton Chong. I found two of his films-- Shaolin Drunken and Gravedigger Kung Fu. Gravedigger Kung Fu was one of the wildest kung fu films I have ever seen truly awful but with lots of crazy fights and bad ass humor. Does anybody have a filmography for Elton Chong. I am wondering which films he made. Also, I have heard that he was filmed under some assumed names-- one of them is Casanova Wong. Does anybody know what his other pseudonyms are. I like his stuff, it is crazy.

Walgreens had the following films I liked.

Five Fingers of Death
Five Deadly Venoms
Snake In Eagles Shadow
Snuff Bottle Connection
Five Elements Kung Fu
Ten Tigers of Kwang Tung

I had to buy a lot of really bad stuff to get these.

The Tai Chi Master (2005) AKA: Master of Tai Chi

http://www.kungfucinema.com/images/general/stars50.gif

Tai Seng's pre-release copy of The Tai Chi Master sat in my stack of incoming DVDs for sometime before I realized that it wasn't a reissue of Yuen Wo-ping's 1993 movie of the same name (also released by Tai Seng) and starring Jet Li, but rather an edited version of Yuen Wo-ping's Master of Tai Chi television series starring Wu Jing. This oversight is unforgivable for it turns out that this series happens to be absolutely outstanding. Wu Jing, in his first television series after breaking onto the martial arts movie scene in Tai Chi II (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/taichi2.htm) (1995), magnificently leads a superb cast of highly skilled screen-fighting actors in an exciting production to rival any Chinese movie. And the kung fu? The kung fu is bliss. Elegance, power, clarity, and precision that never ceases to amaze.

The Tai Chi Master tells the story of Yang Yu-qian ( also spelled Yang Lu-chan), Qing-era founder of the Yang style of Tai Chi, during the years where he mastered this style before founding a school. This 2005 release is a two-hour movie, edited from 25 original episodes of the Master of Tai Chi television series. Wu Jing, whose abilities are greatly missed on the international stage, delivers a brilliant performance as a young Yu-qian. After learning about a powerful style of kung fu known as Tai Chi and only taught to members of the Chan family, kung fu practitioner Yu-qian sneaks into the training area in disguise to watch the clan master, Chan Ching-ying (Yue Hoi) at work. He inadvertently befriends Chan's cross-dressing daughter (Amy Fan) and gains her help in continuing to learn the style. When Master Chan is assaulted by servants of a Qing lord (Billy Chow) who is obsessed with besting Tai Chi, Yu-qian comes to his rescue and in doing so, gains recognition as the first outsider to be accepted as a pupil. As pressure increases on Master Chan to fight with the lord, Yu-qian puts his newfound kung fu expertise to use in a multi-level, pagoda-style match arranged by a Qing princess who is attracted to him. After Master Chan is forced into accepting a death match with the lord, Yu-qian steps in to fight in his place. Chinese television series may be where most of the martial arts action has been taking place since the mid-'90s, but the quality is generally sub-standard with rushed shooting schedules, stock footage used, non-martial artists starring, and sappy soap opera drama geared more for aging housewives than your average genre fan. Yuen Wo-ping and fellow directors Yip Chiu-yee and Lee Kin-wu beat the tar out of this preconception with a series that effectively transplants the Yuen style of kung fu action to the small screen and delivers everything else on a similarly high level of excellence. But what is so amazing is that I daresay, Master Yuen and brother Yuen Cheung-yan have outdone all of their previous work.

When it comes to the kung fu action the brothers Yuen have provided a textbook on screen fighting excellence. Every single fight scene, many of them long, are exceptional and without fault. They have found the perfect blend of old school and wire fu and advanced the kind of action seen in the likes of Iron Monkey (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/ironmonkey.htm) to new levels. The line between the two styles shifts back and forth slightly, but never goes astray. Even the pagoda scene that could have become a cheap rip off of Bruce Lee's Game of Death (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/gameofdeath.htm) takes on a life of its own. Lee might have disagreed with the subversion of his theme on adapting to the fighter, but tai chi has never looked so good when set against a pure strength, stick fighting, drunken boxing, and even a female ninja. And arguably, the Yuen's uphold the spirit of Lee's vision by showing how a practitioner could use an internal style to adapt to different fighters, rather than an external one.

I'm no expert on tai chi, but this mostly internal style is chiefly about turning an opponent's strength against them in regards to combat and The Tai Chi Master shows this in ways that will make anyone who cares cry tears of joy. The whole idea of "sticking" to your opponent and deflating their attack strength is repeatedly illustrated in jaw-dropping scenes where Wu Jing gracefully floors one opponent after another as he exploits joints and glides in with elbow attacks and throws. The Yuen brothers just make this more authentic action better by dropping it in dramatic settings like an arena filled with swords dangling from string and adding their patented wire work and playful camera work.

It really helps to have competent screen fighters and this series has plenty, including a few recognizable big screen stars. Wu Jing excels in his role, delivering beautiful execution of Tai Chi forms and acting with an easy charm. He mostly missed out on the '90s kung fu movie boom in Hong Kong, but here shows why he has become the heir apparent to superstar Jet Li. Yue Hoi, a champion martial artist and one of Mainland China's finest screen stars who has been at since Shaolin Temple (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/shaolintemple.htm) (1982), performs like a man half his age. This veteran will probably never receive the kind of international recognition that he deserves, but at least we get to see him in this role, where he gets to show his lighter side with some comical bathtub kung fu, in addition to the wonderful fighting he performs. Though playing a villain of weak spirit, Billy Chow of Fist of Legend (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/fistoflegend.htm) fame shows that he's quite strong when it comes to fighting fierce. Shaw Brothers devotees will even get a chance to glimpse at screen-fighting veteran Kara Hui (My Young Auntie (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/myyoungauntie.htm)). Unfortunately, her screen time appears to have been cut short in this version. The rest of the cast appears to be filled out by a mix of veteran television stars and wushu artists.

Great kung fu alone makes The Tai Chi Master essential viewing, but everything else matches this level of quality. As for this version, Frank Djeng and his cohorts at Tai Seng (for whom I am ever so grateful) have done a fine job of editing this series into a two-hour movie. The pace is understandably a little too fast moving and the characters a bit underdeveloped. Yet these are small gripes. Anyone interested in the full series can pick it up non-subtitled on VCD. This, however, is a welcome chance to see Chinese television production and kung fu screen fighting at their best and in a form where you can actually follow along.

Distributor: Tai Seng

Format: Region 0 DVD, NTSC

Length: 127 min

Aspect Ratio: Full Screen (1.33:1)

Audio Tracks: Mandarin (DTS, DD 5.1), English (DD 5.1), Cantonese

Subtitles: English

Notes: For a made-for-television production, the picture is really good with strong colors. The limitations of the Beta/digital cameras used are only noticeable when you slow the disc speed or pause it during action scenes. Like many Chinese TV series, it's not shot with sync sound. However, the original Mandarin-dubbed audio comes in two high-quality formats that sound great. The English-dubbed track sounds less vibrant and the voice acting is typically poor. Removable English subtitles are easy to read well written.

Extras: Tai Seng has provided audio commentary for most of their other TV-to-movie adaptations, but there is none this time. There are trailers for other Tai Seng releases and that's it.

I saw a documentary like this, I had it, another movie lost in the shuffle. It showed Jet Li in some of his young competition days, and like this guy said, a lot about the shaolin monastaries. They were doing some crazy stuff. One guy was hanging upside down from a pull-up bar, and had to fill up this bowl of water by taking little tiny cups of water out of a bowl of water on the ground. So he would go down, fill up the little tea cup with water, then have to do a sit-up curl upwards, and then dump that tea cup of water out into a bowl. He was doing that until he filled that bowl. It was crazy.

this one was showing all the animal and sword/whip/bo

also there is this chi gong family that the father and sons can do the Iron Head Technique. The kid gets lifted by his feet and hammered down into a big slab of granete and breaks it. His father breaks rocks over his son's head loads of times, like jet li did in ti chi master but for real

Some more flicks i've seen since my last post.

War of the shaolin temple- Not bad, some nice training scenes. 3.5
Knockabout- Not as good as I expected it to be, but some very nice training scenes. 4
Dreadnaught- Like above, not as good as i expected, some nice bits though. 3
Fists of the white lotus- Very good, probably the best SB bros film i've seen.(Best one i've seen with Gordon liu anyway) I love the internal movies. 5
Born invincible- Another classic, very good this one. Some things were silly but it was good... 5

And im going to watch Invincible armour later on, which should be good. So i'll edit this post.

PS. Doesn't it make sense to just have 1 post for your reviews, instead of hundreds of post? I doubt anyones gonna look through them all- Just an idea btw. :)

If you liked that movie, then you may also like "Executioners of (or from) Shaolin", it stars Chen Kwan Tai. Its basically the same story as Fist of the White Lotus, just with Chen Kwan Tai in the role of Gordon Liu. Gordon Liu is actually in this movie too, just in a fairly small role. The movies are really so similar in storyline its funny, but a good movie IMO. I always enjoy some action from the Priest Pai Mei.

There was like a part 2 to that movie, starring Ti Lung as well, think it was called "All Men are Brothers". I know I have them both sitting at home, haven't watched them in years. I'm not a big fan of David Chiang's work, well not until I saw a couple select movies of his that I liked.

Tell you the truth, I can't recall. Its been quite a while since i've watched either of them. And also, I was hatin on David Chiang for years until I saw Shaolin Handlock and something else that I liked him in. But Shaws Brothers have done strange things like that before.

I think on the box they both have the alternate name "seven soldiers of kung fu", one is part one, and the other is part 2. They may not be related story wise. Could be something like how Crippled Avengers has the title of "Return of the 5 deadly venoms", even though they have no relation story wise. I'll look at the boxes when I get home.

Aight, I went and took a look at my library. I was wrong about "All Men are Brothers" and "Blood Brothers" being linked . I confused "All Men are Brothers" which is also known as "7 Blows of the dragon Part 2", which I have next to "7 Blows of the Dragon Pt. 1". So its "All Men Are Brothers" which is a sequel to "7 blows of the dragon". I still am not sure if these sequels are related thru storyline, or if its just like with the 5 venoms and return of the 5 venoms.

I'll post a list of my KF-flick list when I get back home next week..

Regarding actors, I love Liu aswell, as u can see on my nick. My other two favorite actors are David Chiang and Chen Kuan Tai. SB for life. Don't get the hype about Ti Lung though, even if I like his movies. Same with Yu Wang. I love all of the One-Armed-movies though. The one from -76 with Lo Lie and David Chiang is amazing.

Now I'm gonna check out your list

Yeah, Gordon is getting old (52 I think). I don't find Drunken Monkey on your list, it's from 2003 starring Gordon, Lau Kar Leung and Yuen Wo-ping. The three legends of Kung Fu cinema! If Gordon is old, imagin his steph-dad and Master! But he's up and running, and a lot more :P not bad for a 72yr old with cancer...

Gahh, I haven't seen it and I probably never will. I can bet my right arm it sucks lol. Nah but it really doesn't seem any good...

Before I go to bed, a few of my favorites:

The 36th Chamber-triology
Five Deadly Venoms
Shaolin vs. Lama
Two Champions of Shaolin
Five Shaolin Masters
Anonymous Heroes
Iron Monkey (the original, -77)
Shaolin & Wu Tang
Blood Brothers (With both David Chiang and Chen Kuan Tai it can't go wrong)
Bloody Fists (Chan Sing, another cool actor)
Lone Wolf & Cub-series (Shogun Assassin)
Challenge of the Masters
Mystery of Chess Boxing
Boxer from Shantung

Don't have them in my head, haven't seen em in a while. I'll post a full list when I get back home.

its about 5 guys the venom groupe .. and each one gets crippled by this bad guy and all have a diff thing like one cant see one dosent have legs

so some how they all meet up and find out they been crippled by the same guy
so they train with each other to go out and kill this guy

look it up

cant really explain it cuz im gonna go out and drive for 8 hrs for work lol

but one of the best flicks fights are good

i enjoy the venoms flicks cuz most of the movies they are all in em at the same time
each playing diff roles

You guys ever see either of these movies.....

7 Man Army - a SB flick, all star cast (David Chiang, Ti Lung, Chen Kwan Tai, Fu Sheng, Gordon Liu, Wang Lung Wei, Lee I Min, ...... and others). I've always wanted to get this flick, havent seen it in many places. Actually only came across it at one place. I passed on it because I wasn't sure how much kung fu fighting was in this. I'm usually not into the guns and all that, and this seemed to be heavy with that stuff.

Naval Commandos - Another SB flick, all star cast again (D Chiang, Ti Lung, Fu Sheng, Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng, .... and others). Not sure what this movie is about. Never got this one for the same reason.

Hey, I was watching the Bruce Lee Game of Death movie (The Original) it showed the last 3 fights, and they said that Bruce didn't really like the other kung fu movies (Return Of deadly blade....etc....) because they were coregraphed and he said that(this is what i was hearing from the man talking in the back) that if you were in a real fight you wouldnt be doing all that(which is true) thats why in bruce lee movies his fights scenes are like that. What do yall think about that? I still love the other shit better than bruce lee shit but bruce lee was the shit though, i think he shouldve did a movie like 5 deadly vemos or something. yall thoughts?

lol. Its possible they had the wrong dvd in the box. If you don't know, there are two movies, the original "Master Killer" aka "36 chambers" or whatever else it has been called. And then there is part 2, called "Return to the 36 chambers" although i've seen it titled somethin else.

Other than that, you could have been bamboozled. By this I mean, the names to these movies change all the time based on who has the rights to them, and who is actually making the dvd's and distributin them. There are several outlets, such as Red Dragon, HK Cinema, etc. Sometimes they will take a movie, buy the rights to it, and change the title so that you will think its a movie you never saw, only to find out its somethin you already have. Thats what happens to a lot of these movies that you see in these official unofficial wutang dvd kung fu collection sets. They are just old ocean shore or golden harvest flicks that they buy the rights to and sometimes change the names.

Hope that helps, any other questions, just ask.

Peace.

Two on the Road aka Fearless Dragons features one of the top 5 best finales ive ever seen i my life. My mans Leung Kar Yan and Phillip Ko have a ridiculous 2 on 1 fight with Wang Lung Wei.

must see films:

The Loot (David Chiang, Phillip Ko)
Death Games (Fan Siu Wong)
Buddhist Fist (Yuen Shun Yi)
Legend of a Figher (Leung Kar Yan)
Monkey Kung Fu (Ching Siu Tung...before he discovered wires)
Buddha Assassinator (Hwang Jang Lee)

monkey kung fu aka stroke of death

tight ass movie starring Ching Siu Tung (fight choreographer of Hero, house of flying daggers, swordsmen 2), Kuan Feng, and some other cats, directed by Lo Mar (director of 5 superfighters). this is a Shaw Brothers movie, but its really got more of that independent kung fu movie feel..such as those Yuen Woo Ping oldskool flix.

check out this trailer:

well, Panna Rittikrai (choreographer of ong bak and tom yum goong) was quite an action star in thailand way back in the day. the stuntwork in his flix were absolutely ridiculous...low budget, but ambitious nonetheless. heres a clip. this film came out around 1985 i believe. so far ive got 3 or 4 of panna's old ass low budget films..and the action is pretty impressive.

Hero's a better flick.

one more treat to all the fellow kung fu fans on this site. heres a clip of one of my alltime fav kung fu flix, Born Invincible. for those who dont kno, its directed by Joseph Kuo, the director of Mystery of Chessboxing (incredible flick) and 7 Grandmasters (even better flick). Fight Choreography done by my man Yuen Woo Ping.

http://www.shaolinchamber.com/video_files/MISC/aclassicfightscene_borninvincible.wmv

a kickass fight scene featuring Alan Tsui, Yuen Shun Yi (woo ping's brother), and Corey Yuen Kwai (director of Fong Sai Yuk, My Father is a Hero and 2nd unit director of the transporter)

i guess thats enuff clips for now lol

hey 100proof...how many flix do u have in ur collection altogether?

well, what u'l'l notice about oldskool kung fu flicks is that 90% of them (in the US) are bootlegs. if uve ever bought a Shaw Brothers movie which wasnt a celestial disc from Hong Kong..then its a bootleg. in fact, if u ever buy a kung fu movie from a chinatown, theres a 97% chance its a bootleg.

but SB fans, worry not, official shaw brothers flix are coming to the US real soon. so be on the watch for them.

Like you I love the dubbing of the ol' skool flicks & I agree they do add to the film. Watching a flick w/ subtitles demands mo' concentration - which is not good if ya just want to chill.

W/ regards to the Shaw Bros. flicks they produced ed nearly 1,000 films, from which Celestial Pictures handpicked the best 760 gems which had dominated Asian screens. The library spans all genres of Chinese cinema, from renowned martial arts films to historical adventures; from horror fantasies to slapstick romantic comedies; from action thrillers to the enchanting musicals and unforgettable period dramas.

The entire film library is undergoing a state-of-the-art digital restoration process which will result in new masters of exceptional quality. A unique aspect of this film library is that most titles have never been released on video or television. Celestial is strategically releasing its films for worldwide home video, free and pay TV, and other digital media platforms. Celestial will theatrically re-release its most prestigious films with new 35 mm prints.

Bring back 42nd Street . . . . it'd be cool to go to the cinema & watch an ol' skool kung-fu flick!

Elaquent

word

note that if u buy a remastered SB movie online which has an english dub...unless the disc is produced by the company Siren (australian one i believe), then its a bootleg. Red Sun or PanMedia are quite notorious for ripping the video transfer of Celestial discs and placing old skool english dubs on them..which is why the sound quality is usually trash. guess its more of an ethical thing..

there are only a few legitimate companies releasing these films in the US...fox/fortune star, crash cinema and tai seng are the only ones i can think of at the moment..

iron fist pillage is an aight film...

they took Chang Cheh's classic film The Duel (aka Duel of the Iron Fists) and got cappadonna to redub it. if u like iron fist pillage, then u should actually pick up The Duel. its an awesome crime/triad kung fu flick starring Ti Lung and David Chiang. i really enjoyed that film..just be warned that its an early 70s Shaw Brothers film, which means that its a lot more story driven, and the fight choreography is slower and less polished. if u like early 70s Shaw Brother films, then u'll find much to enjoy.

Tru, no doubt. I've just been putting it off because i'm not a big D. Chiang fan. I used to think he was a punk ass pretty boy, but after seeing a couple movies of his that I liked (shaolin handlock, and another one but the name escapes me, he plays a beggar thief type of guy), I lightened up on my hate for him.

I got a few movies, about 10 that i've yet to watch. The loot will be next. I bought that some time last year from best buy, one of those dvd's that has 4 movies on it.

Damn, its crazy, I was gonna delete all this now that I realized this, but I think the second movie that made me like D. Chiang that i'm referring to in my parthensis above is actually the loot. Guess I did watch it. If its the movie i'm thinking of now, it is very good like the guy said.

depending on how well the first batch of SB films sell in the US, the more that they will get. which means, the likelihood that more kung fu classics will be officially released remastered, if the first batches do well. so support them! out of the first 20 or so announced i think Legendary Weapons of China was the one i was looking most forward to. havent seen it yet either.

im not into swordplay films, but as far as classic kung fu is concerned, (and if ur a fan of early 70s Chang Cheh films), David Chiang starred in a bunch with Ti Lung..better known as Chang Cheh's Iron Triangle films (basically mafia films) including Vengeance!, The Duel and others.

the ending of Shaolin Mantis (aka Deadly Mantis) threw me off too. i guess Lau Kar Leung wanted to put an interesting spin on the whole Ching Dynasty story by having a Ching worker as the protagonist..i think the ending was really just to establish the fact that Chings are bad and the Mings are the best...?

regarding SB films to pick up, if u havent already, look for Lau Kar Leung (Liu Chia Liang) films. my favourite ones being Dirty Ho, Heroes fo the East and Martial Club..(unbelievable flix). then u cant go wrong with the Venoms films, most of them are pretty tight..Kid with the Golden Arms is my favourite. Crippled Avengers and Invincible Shaolin are other favs.

by the way bob99digi, if u liked the Loot, then you should check out The Challenger..basically the same cast and crew as the Loot. heres a fight scene clip from The Challenger:

city on fire is awesome...real dope alternative to Reservoir Dogs.

i havent seen very many dragon lee flix...personally, i cant stand those Bruceploitation films..aside from a couple Bruce Li films which are kinda dope..

Shogun Assassin is an awesome movie. great action, story and a sick english dub. however, all it is is the first 2 Lone Wolf and Cub movies cut and redubbed into a film...as a standalone film, its still pimped.

wu tang master...ur kid with the golden arms is the same one i got, which is the GroundZero copy. theres a lot of story cut out, but i dont think that any fights are cut. i dont kno if theres a fully uncut version out anywhere, but theres a Beverly Wilshire version which is like 90 min...however its the worst quality dvd ive ever seen in my life. everybody...if u ever see a Beverly Wilshire/Telefilms dvd anywhere...AVOID IT...the quality is unbelievably bad..worse than vhs.

Mr Dragon Lee is also in 'The Dragon, The Hero'
a much better film with tino wong and john liu

funny thing is, that Gordon usually fought against Pai Mei and then he was one in Kill Bill...

i wsant a huge fan of 8 diagram pole fighter..was a bit disappointed actually...guess thats what hype does lol

Clan of the White Lotus was a really tight film...it was ironic that he became pai mei in kill bill after fighting him in clan of the white lotus. also check out Executioners from Shaolin...the original pai mei movie. gordon liu has a cameo in it...instead, lo lieh gets to duke it out with Chen Kuan Tai..who is a personal fav of mine.
i havent seen dragon on fire, but based on the reviews here and elsewhere, i have no intention of doin so anytime soon..

executiners from shaolin is one of my faves
his wife not opening her legs and shit playin hard to get
the fights were ill too
in response to midget:
it wasnt 'dragon on fire' that was sampled on 'duel of the iron mics'
it was 'the dragon, the hero' which is dope
they have a similar cast, and i think, the same director (Godfrey Ho)
im not sure if its got different titles like many fu flicks do
so i might be wrong

Executioners from Shaolin - is aight movie, thou i aint got the dubbed version, only original mandarin or the hell they are speakin' .........also Shaolin vs Wu-Tang only in original sound :(
