Yeah I like a lot of jazz stuff, particularly contemporary jazz - avant garde shit, don't know a lot of names... Bugge Wesseltoft is one - real laid-back stuff, though there's a lot more than just his stuff that I like.

By the way, I'm sure this has been asked many times, but can you please explain to me what's going on in your sig? I've been curious about that since you put it up.

back to coltrane- "a love supreme" is an album that you should BUY, read the liner notes, THEN play the entire cd. 3 tracks=about 35-40 minutes. it is an extremely spiritual record. other goodies are "soultrane" and "black pearls".

Yeah, I was listening to it. I like the idea behind it.

Unfortunately, I didnt like that mix of hiphop and jazz. It can be said it has been done better in the past i.e. Jazzmatazz.

Usually when listening to hiphop, I feel mainly the beat and the lyrics a good melody will make a very good track. When listening to jazz, it has a smooth yet unpredictable flow that is mysteriously relaxing yet energetic. This album didnt fit any of those characteristics for me when listening to that fusion of hip hop and jazz. If anything, I found those saxophones annoying over those corny beats and thats why I didnt enjoy it as much as some of you might.

Anybody like Charles Mingus? I've been listening to him a lot lately. I mean, just peep these tracks.

Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (some of you might recognize it from Masta Ace's A Long Hot Summer)

This one is my favorite by him, it's called Fables of Faubus

I'm also liking Fela Kuti a lot, he's got some nice shit. If I have time I'll post some later.

old topic but at least i used the search feature huh?

i've been listening to "Kind of Blue" recently.
it's on a different musical level, jazz that is, but kind of blue is kind of unique. it's one of those rare albums where you get the parts of it stuck in your head, and listening to them again raises up the song onto another level.

i wanna pick up these albums:
A Love Supreme
The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady

and here's a mingus song i've been digging into: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gkTEfrmqxws

haha...i just saw a post of mine in here from '05. i've been spinning that coltrane greatest hits album lately too. there's so much i need to get. dig this yall. i'm taking a jazz class right now! how sick is that?? the teacher is this young white saxophonist who's working on his masters degree at Howard. i'm learning a lot about the science behind jazz, how chords and scales prefigure improvisations. jazz is freewheeling, but it's freewheeling within certain parameters. because this is my first music class since elementary school, i'm still trying to wrap my mind around certain things. i feel kind of silly in class sometimes because i'm a big jazz head and yet there are so many things i didnt quite understand. the great thing is, though, that we have this amazing jazz textbook that came with TWO comprehensive jazz CDs that cover the genre from its beginnings in 1917 with the earliest jazz recording we have all the way to the fusion of the 70s. i'm putting that shit in my iPod!!

stuff i'm feeling right now:
Miles Davis-Round Midnight
Thelonious Monk-Straight No Chaser
Charlie Parker Best Of Album
Billie Holiday & Lester Young
Herbie Hancock (anything from Blue Note in the 60s is MONEY)
Ornette Coleman-Shape of Jazz to Come
Dexter Gordon-Gettin Around
Ken Burns Jazz Best of Dizzy Gillespie
