I kinda feel like hip hop is for morons in 2007 and I am embarrased to say that I used to be a hip hop fan.....sure older hip hop is great....but the last 3-4 years the music keeps getting worse, and seems to be degenrating every year to appeal to someone with a grade 7 education....

of all the hip hop coming out today I would say that 98% of it is made for complete idiots......this is not the hip hop I grew up with. Hip Hop today has turned into a Minstrel Show!!! I can honestly say that there has not been one great album to come out in 2007, and in the last 2-3 years there have been no great albums, just a handfull of good ones (clipse, Ghostface)....

Hip Hop is dying and quickly, if not on life support, all you have to do is look at 2007......hip Hop is no longer creative, artistic, or even cool anymore......everyone is trying to dumb there shit down to what the next guy is doing on some corporate jingle shit....it is wack....

I can honestly say that I am about done with hip hop, sure I love the classics from the 1990's and will keep an eye on the WU Tang, but the genre really sucks on so many levels now I have lost interest in it

thank goodness that Indie rock has been exceptionally good the last couple years, or I dont know what I would be listening too

man im jus sik and tired that the 'hip hop fan' today knows nothing about hip hop. i got into a heated arguement with all my friends about rap, they claim the wu tang are shit and listen carefully guys they dnt have good lyrics or flow. this does get better, then i go ok which rapper is better to you. then i got a whole list jay z, fat joe and all the others. then because my mates just discovered bone thugs they go on about how bone thugs are the best rap group ever. ok bone thugs are good so i asked them why bone thugs over the wu. the reply was that bone thugs were more gangsta. i stopped argueing and just agreed with them cause theres no point hip hop fans today are morons.

that because the average hip hop fan today has been fed bullshit so long, they begin to like the taste......

the average kid today does not respect lyriscism today....because all they hear day in day out is some pop radio bullshit, so when they hear a track with just lyrics, they do not know what to think

...lets face it, lyrics are dead in 2007

This is bullshit, seems you are only talking about the mainstream, which begs me to ask, what do you expect?....If you want thought provoking lyrics with raw production, point your ears to the ground because the underground is where it's at. I just bought DJ Jazzy Jeff's album (Return of the Magnificent) which came out a few weeks ago and I would say it's a shining example of dope creative hip hop in 07, if you really knew your hip hop you wouldn't be saying this.
Im not saying that all underground hip hop is groundbreaking and inovative, all im saying is that real hip hop is still alive and kicking, and im not just talking about the vets but also younger cats too.

I once had a conversation with this dude where I was working at the time, he was about 18 or 19, so we get talking about hip hop and I mention the wu, he says to me that his older brother liked them back in the day and that their music was good but they pale next to crews like dipset and D-Block. He also said that that lyrical complex style was played out. I laughed at his ignorance but then I tried to explain a few things to him but he wasn't listening so frankly I stopped trying because honestly I didn't care enough, if he's happy enough to roll in shit then let him.

i think you got it twisted between mainstream rap and stuff that doesnt get played on mtv/bet. There are have been some bangers this year like Red gone wild and for whom the beat tolls. The problem is the radio and television are so polluted by Rich Boy, MIMS, E-40, and other garbage rap that no one knows about the TRUE hip hop albums that drop. Like I challenge any to sit down and watch TRL or 106th and Park from start to finish, its proven that it cannot be done without committing suicide.

First I do know my hip hop, grew up in the 1990's listening to groups like Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, Boot Camp Click, Alkoholics, Hieroglyphics, Mos Def, Beatnuts, Biggie, Pharoahe Monch, Nas etc

My point in this thread is that sure real hip hop still does exist except it is probably 5% of what is being made today, 95% is bunk Minstrel show music made for idiots. All you have to do is look how lyrical albums were in the 1990's comared today. you would never see singles like "one Mic" by nas, or any single Wu Tang released in the 1990's get released today....the songs are too lyrical. Today you need some dumbed down lyrics with a pop feel that cross's over to all demographics, perferably with some corny dance that comes along with it.....today hip hop is controlled in the boardrooms. All you have to do is turn on the TV or listen to rap radio to hear this. When I was growing up good groups got played on Rap City and were played on the radio....you dont get this today. There is no way you are hearing that new DJ JAZZY JEFF album getting played on tv or radio today, what gets played is garbage, there fore the culture and artform of hip hop is dying

how can a genre or movement survive when 98% of what kids here and see is bullshit they think that that is good and emulate it, and that what the labels want.....hence there being very few dope new artists today....\

sure there may some dope artists out there under the surface, but if there voice is not being heard, they dont make an impact, and disapear

I think Hip Hop peaked in the 1990's and can't free itself of the corporate grip it is in in 2007 and has been steadily declining over the years.....you cant argue with that

As long as I can get my dope hip hop,I couldn't care less about commerical joints. It's out there. U just have to get on the grind and look 4 it. Especially if ya lucky to be near a spot the sells underground or independent LPs. Thank goodness 4 Fat Beats

the culture and artform of hip hop is dying

That's how to say it. There's so much poison out there in the game rite now I don't know how long it's been since I've bumped any radio station on my stereo.

These niggas is it in for the money now, not the for the passion or love of this art Hip Hop. Where's the realism at??? Underground or in the Wu-Tang Corp members music library.

Even so, the real MC's doing there thang rite now give a sense of hope and by an act of god maybe a REAL HIP HOP MOVEMENT someday . So by that being said...............

Hip Hop Culture Is Eternal throughout "US!!!"

99% of all good music anywhere is underground. You can talk and talk about when mainstream rap was better, but do you think more than 50,000 (VERY GENEROUS ESTIMATE) of the millions of people who bought that shit actually cared about lyricism?

The point being, who gives a fuck what's going on in the mainstream. Shit is wack any way you look at it. All music becomes watered down by the music industry. The only relevant shit is underground.

all your gonna get is a bunch of bullshit albums with maybe

Only more annoying thing then cats listening to shitty commercial, club shit - Is the cats who sit and bitch about how "hip hop is dying", when it's just because they're not willing to look for the shit. I guarantee theres atleast 10 dope, dope, dope albums around that you have never heard, or never heard of, but you want the music to come to you... The guys really representing hip-hop get hardly any advertisement because they don't have the deals like Cam'ron, MIMS and shit because they don't sell well. It's a cycle, people don't wanna have to fucking investigate for hip-hop, and true hip-hop doesn't make enough money so people have to investigate..

Go pick up Marco Polo's album, or Jazzy Jeff's (Not my favourite, some banging tracks and it's ORIGINAL). Go back and go through artists like Cunninlynguists, Heiroglyphics, The Roots, Apathy, RA, or even some artists from another country (Heard a dope Cronite song ft. Masta Ace, tryina find the album..).

Hip-hop is alive and kicking, cats are actually getting BETTER on the mic, not worse.. Just gotta look. Bitching doesnt do shit, especially when it's wrong.

I have to say I totally disagree with you on these points bro....

1)I think that this IS THE LEAST EXCITING TIME IN HIP-HOP history, the art form has never been as watered down and stale as it is today

2) I thought 2006 was weak as hell, just like most of this decade

3) debuts by PAPOOSE and SAIGON have been continuly pushed back, missing release dates for ages......these cats are too lyrical, and the lables dont want to put them out untill they dumb down there shit, its obvious...they dont fit the rap climate in 2007 and I would be shocked if Saigon's album comes out unless he dumbs its down, I read an interview last week were he said he may have to leak the album casue the label keeps pushing it back......and Papoose this dude has been around for ages without dropping an album, like how many mixtapes has this dude dropped already, makes me wonder where the album is? and if the lables are not jerking him into doing some pop shit

...its sad when guys who can spit, cant even get an album out in 2007

how can the culture survive when less and less people are buying and supporting these "real" groups?

How can you say hip hop is alive and well in 2007 when you cant hear any real hip hop on radio, tV etc. and have to dig deeper and deeper to find the real stuff?

its like hip hop is slowly being extinct

The culture isnt the music, common misconception, the culture runs deeper then the music, and to me the culture will never die. To you it might, thats your choice bro I'm not gonna bag you out for it. Fuck the popularity of hip-hop, I don't give a fuck if I'm the only person in the world who loves the shit.

I dont listen to the radio, never have, and well, going to the TV for music is a bit of a contradiction IMO. Never judged music on how much radio play its got, or who/how many people like it.

Digging is a part of the culture, thats the foundation of the culture right their mate. I try to spend atleast a few hours a week checking out new acts and shit, even downloaded an album from the Audio section here (Nice work Mantis btw)

Nah, disagree 100%. I'm lovin this year so far, but I search far and wide for my shit.. dont just read the "what you buyin" thread on here for releases.

Im too old to say whats cool and whats weak these days. Hip-hop in 2007 is dope, we just don't know. That one hit by MIMS is good even with those extreme dumb lyrics....and it was just magic and why ONLY that one track worked for them.

Just like the days when you were a teenager and your parents hated the music listened to and thought the 50s-60s were good.

Most of us think the 90's were dope....and it was.

Then when you look back and listen to many different genres of music of all times, you can admit that a lot of that stuff 40 years and older is pretty good that you parent's generation was listening to.

Good? Oh, come on... There are criteria what is good music and what ain't. Every genre has its growing, pinnacle and falling down, now it's the time for hip hop to fall down. Just look at rock'n'roll, punk, such things...

all im sayin here iz that hip hop iz still here
it hazn't been put on the earth to be the "perfect" culture
i've been lookin down to the underground n the independent
section of hip hop n to me most the truth iz down there.
imo rap music n hip hop culture itself shuld've stayed underground
in the 1st place because thatz where itz usually from.

the majority of people that dont kno anything about hip hop are the onez
killin it n the onez that do kno the culture well but dont tell it to the fanz
are killin it too.
to me n some other people hip hop iz still here. we jus have to SEARCH
for the truth n TEACH it to the fanz.

Rap music has been going downhill since after 1999. The music has been too commercial and pop for a long time now and i don't see the music changing anytime soon. A lot of rappers i liked from back in the day are doing independent albums now because they're fed up with the major record labels. Plus the black radio stations, BET and MTV are playing bullshit wack rappers because the youth that are buying the music like that wack shit and wack rappers are the only artists that record companies wanna promote. Record companies aren't interested in promoting lyrical rappers anymore. It's a shame that the independent record companies don't have a lot of money like the major record labels so they can promote the lyrical rappers. 10 years from now, i bet rap music will still suck. That's a shame too because the lyrical rappers we liked from back in the day are all gonna be gone from the rap game in the near future and we won't have anybody to look forward to except the wack rappers LOL.

Another sad thing about rap music now is that the rap veterans like LL Cool J, Redman, Keith Murray, Too Short, Erick Sermon, Jay-Z, Ice Cube, Mobb Deep, Method Man, Dogg Pound, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Fat Joe are being forced into doing wack music to stay relevant. That's a god damn shame because these rappers have been in the game long enough to take a stand and tell these bitch ass record companies that they aren't gonna do wack music to sell records just so they can stay in the rap game. Since these rap veterans are being forced to do wack music by their record companies, they need to use their damn brains and go the independent route and do that hardcore music they did from back in the day.
