At about 2:00 I punched Bayfront Park into my GPS and headed down south to hit the show up, arriving 40 minutes later. By the we parked, picked up are tickets at will call, and got in the gates it was around three o clock or so. I grabbed a couple overly priced beers and some sort of spanish corn sandwich with cheese in the middle of it. If i miss naming some performers I was a little out of it.
Let me first say that the host Supernatural was one of the greatest hosts I have ever seen entertain the audience. This guy is in the Guinness book of records for the longest freestyle, 8hrs long! In between groups he kept the show rocking by doing numerous freestyles, that were all dope. One of my favorites is when he told everyone in the front stage to hold up any item, he would grab it and work it into his freestyle. That he did, flawlessly and with some sick lyrics, if he can freestyle that dope who knows what else he is capable of. He has been hosting the concert from when it started in Cali.
Raekwon's, Ice Water Inc group performed some tracks from their upcoming album and fortunately only performed for about 20 minutes, didn't really impress me much.
Pharoahe Monch performed for about half an hour and put on a decent show, I'm not really a big fan of his and his performance didn't really steer me to be one either. It wasn't really bad, but I wasn't feeling it and never really got into his music. No encore didn't offend me.
When Jedi Mink Tricks got on stage, the seats that were empty up front quickly filled up from the audience that was on the lawn. I have never listened to them before, but I must say they put on a great performance and had some nice tracks. The police to the right of me were not happy when they where chanting fuck the police though.
Immortal Technique was definitely a crowd favorite, another performer I always heard about but never really gave any time to. That was definitely my mistake. He rocked the show whether it was a freestyle or any album cut he has done in the past, full of energy and charisma. I definitely enjoyed his set, although at times it was a little too political which I don't mind but a bit over saturated.
When Talib Kweli graced the stage it was evident there was a lot of love in Miami for him, the crowd was on their feet. He performed for about a half hour of classic tracks, when Mos Def graced the stage as well doing several tracks together. All of a sudden mid track, our special guest arrives. None other than Common Sense comes running out onto the stage and gets in on the track, the crowd went bonkers, and everyone was screaming. He hung out for a while and performed "The People" and bounced out. Mos Def held the show down almost another whole hour on his own.
A little after nine o clock, was the moment I was waiting for. Nas hits the stage and the crowd roars. Esco started off by asking the crowd something to the effect of do they love real hip hop and not that fake 50 cent shit, not letting the beef go between the two. "Ether" drops and just when you think Nas is going to do the whole song, it cuts into "Black Republican". Nas performed alot of tracks from Illmatic at the beginning. Mid show al phone dial played from the speakers, and Nas told the crowd he missed AZ, Mega, Foxy, and Nature and had love for all of them and said he would love to do tracks with them all they gotta do is hit him up, then "Phone Tap" dropped. Nas continued to drop tracks from each album, even performing "Oochie Wallie". Some of the best songs he did were tracks he called "Underground" performing "Doo Rags" and several tracks from The Lost Tapes, which are some of may favorite. Nas performed a good 40 minutes, made my night.
Wu-Tang was the last to perform, holding down the stage for about 45 minutes, performing all the classic tracks from 36 chambers, Wu-Tang Forever, and even tracks like "Gravel Pit". Everyone sounded great, but Deck still sounds like he got a frog in his throat. Even Cappadonna was there, this is the 3rd time I have seen the Wu, and Cappa is usually one of if not the best performer of the clan live. Method Man always steals the show, crowd surfing and all that good stuff. ODB's son was also on stage and they did a tribute to the late, great, ODB. The set was phenomenal as always. I was disappointed they didn't perform any tracks from "8 Diagrams", however the DJ did play one track from the album at the end of the show, sounded dope.
All in all, I will definitely be at the show next year again. They said they will try to get the show down here as big as the one in NY and Cali, bringing Rage, Rakim, Cypress Hill, and more down this way next time. I will be there either way.
I will up all the pictures and video that I captured, most of the audio is pretty bad but some of the video is clear and towards the end of the night the pictures of Nas where to dark to come out, although I did get the video of him dissing 50 and just missed the shout out to AZ and them but picked up right after when he performed "Phone Tap".
