shit my friend sent me a few songs from em to use as like "ambient homework music", but they're sooo damn ill.

i downloaded the album Dummy and it's excellent. i'm feeling their style of music, and the girl's vocals are eerie as fuck, but they fit the beats well.

anyone else into them, or anyone else wanna get acquainted?

it's like instrumental music, but it kinda fuses together soundtrack music with hiphop and jazz and guitar elements. it's real real real dope shit.

kinda sucks that they only got 2 albums, even though they been around for more than 10 years now. well 2 albums, plus one live album.

anyways, anyone else feeling them? or know other cats that do the same kinda shit? these guys are too sick!!!

yeah "Dummy" is a great album.

i heard something about them releasing an album in the near future, not sure if this is still happening or not.

similar stuff.. i dunno dont listen to alot of it, i guess people call it "trip hop".

definitely pick up DJ Shadow - Endtroducing is you already havent.

apart from that maybe Air?

i cant say i liked "Portishead" as much, half the tracks were great, and the rest just seemed irritating for some reason. "Dummy" is almost flawless though.

Yeah Dummy is basically perfect. The Portishead album is sadly not as good.

Mezzanine by Massive Attack and Lamb by Lamb are really great buys if you like Dummy.

Also check out:

Lamb - Fear Of fours
Tricky - Pre-Millenium Tension
Tricky - Maxinique
Massive Attack - Blue Lines
Massive Attack - 100th Window

Being from London and spending a lot of time in the Bristol area helps!

Yeah, a lot of stuff by Tricky and Massive Attack is very good.

Lamb are the ones that a lot of people haven't heard of but everyone who does gets blown away.

I'll up a couple of mp3s to give a taste.

As I'm feeling nice, I'll dub off my Massive Attack - Karmakoma EP vinyl tonight and upload it tomorrow. It features the Portishead remix (you won't find Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky all together on a track ever again I doubt, so it's a rare thing to hear) as well as the Unkle one featuring DJ Shadow. Really dope record.

Holy fuck I think I gotta agree I just downloaded Dummy from the other thread in Wu-Chamber and it's dope as fuck. I'll have to go and buy this some time. I love triphop stuff and I've only ever heard of these guys in passing, but it's really good.

I reccommend the track "The Girl Who Fell Through Ice" by Aim on his album Hinterland If you like this kinda stuff. He's more like DJ Shadow than Portishead I think but you're on a Hip-Hop forum so you shoudl like him he's collaborated with Souls Of Mischiel and Diamond D.

not on every track.

but mostly just because I'm a DJ, so instrumentals are always good for dropping acapellas over the top.

Long time Portishead fan here; yeah they've got a new album coming out now, first one in ten years. And for the UK heads, they're curating a festival in December.

the version that was upped in the Wu-Chamber has some fucked up tracklist. I think it's the UK version or somethin. Try finding a regular version that comes with 11 tracks instead of 10. "It's a Fire" should be the extra track.

How do you pronounce "Portishead?"

a.) Portis Head

b.) Portish Ed

Also, what does that word mean?

DRUNKENDRAGON

It's pronounced like a.) Portis Head. They are named after a small town in Europe, close to where they lived.

It sounds funny calling it a small town in Europe!

Portishead is a little place just outside Bristol in England. The Bristol area pretty much gave birth to this sort of music, with Massive Attack and Tricky being other locals.

SAme here both kick ass for different reasons...
dummy is chill/smooth
S/T is darker and creepier... the opening jam "cowboys" has a sound straight out of a horror movie...

when portishead comes on... my lady's clothes come off.
fact.
a must have in the wax/mp3 collection

If you guys are into that type of sound there is a program here in San DIego on at night called BIG SONIC CHILL and they play Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Air, DJ Shadow, LAMB, Doves, Morcheeba, **Starline theory ( SAN DIEGO ) ,
you can listen to them online from 10pm-2am everynight (cept sat)
the web address is http://fm949sd.com

sign up and you can listen to the full BIG SONIC CHILL programs here...
http://fm949sd.com/aod/aod.cfm

def worth checkin out if you are reading this thread and like portishead or any of the groups listed above...

I once said in a record store listening to the whole live album. A friend of mine was coming to the record store, so I had to kill the time waiting. Now I still need to buy that album.

Oyeah I got that bbc set from the dj.

Got to giev it to the 20 years ago comment, hahah. but a bit on point.

On August 4th 2007 Geoff wrote on the bands myspace page that the band was about a week away from mixing.

ive been listening to maxinquaye for the last few days and i dunno. Its not really fucking with dummy. Some of maxinquayes beats sound too much alike and some tracks are long as fuck and make me press the fast forward.

That said maxinquaye is still a great album. I love Martina's vocals.

Portishead Album One Day From Completion (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/46571-portishead-album-one-day-from-completion)
Challenge Madlib to soccer match? http://assets3.pitchforkmedia.com/images/image/39889.portisheadsmall.jpg? Photo by Grumpy Man DJs (http://www.grumpyman.co.uk/)

From close (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/46308-portishead-album-in-the-mixing-stage-says-band-blog), to, well, closer: in fact, as Geoff Barrow of Portishead (http://www.portishead.co.uk/) tells it, the band's third proper LP is just one day away from completion. Barrow, checking in on the band’s blog (http://www.portishead.co.uk/blog.php), says Portishead spent a few days in London finishing things up, but are back in Bristol making executive decisions regarding album art and plotting their return to the stage. "i think one more day messing about with it and it will be done," Barrow writes. "then into the wonderful world of mastering.. [joke]" He doesn't actually like mastering all that much, see.

Barrow then mentions that megaproducer Madlib (http://www.myspace.com/madlib) will join the band at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas event (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/44021-thurston-boris-ladytron-join-portishead-atp-fest) they're curating. He adds "im putting a footy team together for a little 6 a side comp for a laugh." Does that mean he's challenging Madlib to a soccer match? Ooh, we hope so!
The three-day Nightmare (http://www.atpfestival.com/events/portishead/) begins December 7 at Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, England.

i cosign this two year-old statement about their self-titled album haha. i bought it on saturday, and while some tracks are great, Beth Gibbon's voice on some of the songs is off-pitch and irritating.

all the beats are dope though.

favorite tracks off that album were Over, Only You, All Mine, WESTERN EYES

i need to hear dummy. should have bought that one first haha.

how was their new album, Third?

Longbongcilvaringz
04-02-2009, 02:30 AM
Third is much better than 'Portishead'.

Much more consistent.

Still not on the same level as 'Dummy'.

But yeah, i could never understand why people rated 'Portishead' anywhere near 'Dummy'
