So lately I have been really feeling Black Thought as a deadly emcee, and I want to get a Roots album where he really shines on the mic or where he does the best? What are your suggestions?

Illadelph Halflife for me.

Things Fall Apart was the 1st Roots CD I ever got...it won a grammy for "hip-hop album of the year" when it came out, so not a bad place to start.

Tough argument for me whether Black Thought is a better MC before or after that album...overall I like their newer work.

You can pretty much pick up ANY Roots album and he'll be dope on it.

Illadelph Halflife is straight classic, and has one of the best videos for mine, rips the shit outta the "Puffy" charatcers in hip-hop.

things Fall Apart is a classic

Do You Want More??!!?!?! is a classic

Get those, then move on to the newer shiz

Things Fall Apart IMO, but it's not a huge way ahead of Illadelph, Do You..., or Game Theory. Those four are my favourites.

Cop the "Roots present..." DVD. Some of the guests are wack but Blackthought KILLS all the Roots shit. No hype man or backing tracks..just live mcing....dope. The Phrenology album is dope and his cameo on Kweli's "Guerrilla Monsoon Rap" is super nice.

Game Theory, without question feels like a classic, their other joints can be a bit dull musically.

i only have the 3 first.

1.Illadelph halflife
2.do you want more
3.when things fall apart

Game Theory and Things Fall Apart

1. Illadelph Halflife
2. Game Theory
3. Things Fall Apart

With that said however, all Roots albums are tight and worth owning (i.e. buying).

Funny i actually asked a friend of mine this exact question last night and his answer was "do i have to pick just one?"

for me it's a definite tie between illadelph and game theory

i feel like i shouldn't be placing such a new album so high up given their extensive catalogue but as far as consistency i really feel game theory is perfect.

however like everyone else is saying, they are all good

i think dude above me hit it perfect

Things Fall Apart > Illadelph Halflife > Do You Want More ?!?!?! > Organix > Phrenology > Game Theory > The Tipping Point

All of them were dope (except The Tipping Point was a little disappointing). Also check out The Roots Come Alive, a live-concert recording type deal and The Roots/J Period Best of mixtape, a lot of amazing blends and other cuts on it. Also get every rare, unreleased, or guest song you can find. Someone on another forum up'd about 30 of them for me a couple years ago and it's all great.
