KZN councillor's murderers to be sentenced today
August 21, 2007, 09:00
The circuit court on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast is expected to sentence two men found guilty of murdering an ANC councillor at Shobashobane last year.
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor Mkhishwa Khawula and his cousin Fananobani Ndovela were yesterday found guilty of the killing of Zakhele Cele and his three bodyguards in March last year.
Cele had just won an election in the area. Judge Piet Koen found that Cele's electoral victory had not been accepted by certain IFP members who then planned an attack in order to force a by-election. Khawula and Ndovela executed the plan.
Cele and his bodyguards died in a hail of bullets fired indiscriminately into a room they were sleeping in.
