The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has condemned the murder of a detective outside Woodstock police station. "Once again, we are starting another year marred by the brutal killing of police officials," the union said in a statement today.

Lourens le Roux (39), an inspector, was shot in the head and stomach in his unmarked parked vehicle outside the Woodstock police station in Cape Town yesterday afternoon. He was the father of two teenage girls.

Randall Stoffels, a police spokesperson, said two men in their 20s were arrested in connection with the killing last night. They were expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Popcru described le Roux's murder as a loss to the service. "The fact that there is a possibility that his murder is linked to his work is even more worrying," it said. "We condemn all crimes involving the killing of police members irrespective of sex, colour, and creed and rank
