Joe Zawinul died Tuesday morning in a hospital in Vienna. He was one of the greatest musicians coming out of Austria, he changes Jazz over here. Remember the legend...
In an interview '03, Zawinul said he's the creator of the hip-hop beat, after several rap groups used the beat from his song "125th Street Congress" from the "Sweetnighter" LP.

Charles Mingus, well Joe Zawinul of course, Louis Armstrong
from there Miles Davis is where you want to go, most of albums are good, but his debut 'birth of the cool' is a good place to start, its actually crazy to listen to that album considering how laidback it is, cos his later stuff is way out there.
Ahmad Jamal is an incredible pianist, his album 'awakenings' has been sampled by many hip hop artists so thats definetly recomended.
Ramsey Lewis is an artist you might wanna check out if you're a Tribe Called Quest fan.
Theres a lot more that i could recomend, John Coltrane, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Eddie Harris etc
