why are you comparing nas to raekwon? they're similar artists, but there second and first albums both came out at different times. myself I don't really affiliate them except for a few collaborations.

8/10 that album is good, the only reason it sometimes gets faded is because it came out after illmatic, and every was expecting it to be as good as illmatic. the intro is intresting, and all the joints were done rite

Think Nas couldn't have come up with a better album after his best album Illmatic, most artists go downwards fast after the release of a classic, but It was written is a class CD. I especially like The Message, Take it in Blood, Affirmative Action, Suspect, If I Ruled the World and the Bonus Track Silent Murder has got a good vibe aswell. My rate for this album wud be 8/10

"It Was Written":a classic mafia-rap album, with a young but strong Nas ready to come out with a great second album.Nas' Lyrics are dedicated to the streets,to the crimes, just like a real member of a Family. Sometimes he's a gangster ready for war, sometimes a criminal captured by emotions...Strumentals are full of that italoamerican flavor, that contains guitars and maracas...For the beats Nas chooses his "godfathers" Premier and L.E.S.,but there are new names like legendary Dr.Dre or Trackmasters, too. Collaborations are near the album's theme,so we will listen Mobb Deep or The Firm, crew formed by AZ,Nas Escobar,Foxy Brown and Cormega (in "The Album" Cormega will be changed with Nature). Most beautiful tracks are "Affermative Action","I Gave You Power","If I Ruled The World" (great song featuring Lauryn Hill)...Second opera of the N.Y. rapper is a great noir theatre.Fo' the streets.8,5/10

Itshard for an emcee to out do his own greatness, especially one as young as Nas was when he dropped this joint. He came damn close though. IMO, this was a hell of a follow up to one of hip hop's greatest LPs ever.

Great classic album. Alot of nice beats on here and great guest appearances by Dre, AZ, Mobb Deep, and more. This is my second favorite Nas album right under Illmatic. The lyrics on here are great, Nas' flow and delivery are always on point, this is vintage Nas. I got it a 9/10. A must have for any Nas fan or any hip hop collection in general

This album has some real contradicting reviews. Some Nas fans prefer it than illmatic and then some people say its absoloute shit. I think its a good solid album and suffers severly been the album after Illmatic. I doubt a hip hop album ever had to live up to that hype but it fared pretty well

Probably the same. An 8/10. They're both solid albums. Neither of them are anything particularly special to me. I wouldn't really say either album is "better" than the other. Just that I prefer 'It Was Written' to 'Illmatic'. Maybe it's because it's the first Nas album I got? Not sure, but I do enjoy it more than 'Illmatic'.

Okay, a solid 8,5/10.

PROS:
+ excellent mafioso-inspired raps (even if they ain't about Mafia you still feel Escobar's POW in it).
+ lyrically much deeper and more emotional than pretty much anything he ever wrote
+ Havoc as producer in his prime (Set Up and Live Nigga Rap are MONSTERS!)
+ Dre at his early Aftermath phase (I dunno why everyone hates on him in that days, he was at his best up then)
+ If I Ruled the World - has commercial appeal and is still a street banger, DOPE SONG

CONS:
- some wack prods on the first half of album
- Street Dreams - infamous jacking of 2Pac beat

Take It In Blood is the bast track...IMO

Yea, i agree, possibly one of Nas' best ever.

This album is good, but some of the songs have to grow on you.

But The message, I gave you power, Live Nigga rap, Take it in Blood, Affiirmative action are all great.

7.5 or 8....

Nothing Nas will ever do again can be Illmatic, so if he is chasing that high again, or trying to top it, or if fans are looking for it, they are just wasting their time.

Personally, this is one of my favorite albums of all-time and I feel as though it is Nas's best album. My favorite joint on it is "Watch Them Niggaz" which is my favorite Nas joint period. The only song I didn't like on this album was "Nas is coming" but everything else was heat.

This album is an enigma because for whatever reason, as a collective, people could never get a good baseline on it pertaining to if they liked it or they didn't. I like it that way though. Again, classic!

It was good but i don't think is as great as alot of people say (and definetly not better than Illmatic, not even close). I don't know, i'm just not really a fan f Nas' mafioso raps; Album had some very nice tracks and all, but the only standout track to me was "I Gave You Power".

Actually Stray Bullet by Organized Konfusion was the first song to rap from the perspective of a gun...or the first one that I know of, but Nas certainly wasn't the first to do it, although his version was real ill.

As for the album, I'd rate it 9/10, an excellent follow up to Illmatic, possibly one of the best follow up albums in hip hop. To me this is a very well thought out album, which is listenable from start to end.

1. Album Intro
2. The Message-Sick as hell, one of my favorite songs of all time, the beat was beyond perfect as a way to open an album, it has the illmatic vibe to it, but more polished. Lyrically it's insane too the vividness of the gun fight is beyond comprehension.10/10
3. Street Dreams- GREAT song, dope uptempo beat that sounds like vegas, which is dope that they used vegas as the setting for the video 10/10
4. I Gave You Power- Probably one of the best stories ever told in rap. To rap AS a gun.. whoa. This song was revolutionary 10/10
5. Watch Dem Niggas- Dope ass song, grimey chorus the line "I have no game its just some bitches understand my story" is tooooo fucking real. Lyrically it's nas at his best, the beat is taylor made for him 10/10
6. Take it in Blood-Whoa.......what the fuck im i gonna say about this song that'll do it justice. Its my favorite nas song ever, i listened to it on repeat for days 11/10
7. Nas is Coming- dope song, the beat is sicker then the lyrics, idk if that makes sense but oh well. 9/10
8. Affirmative Action- perfect fam track, Foxy and Az murdered it, i've never sat down to do the math of what foxy's talking about but i've been meaning to.10/10
9. The Set Up- ha! this songs the shit great story, great energy RAW beat. 10/10
10. Black Girl Lost- I can't stand this song, it's too jiggy and out of nowhere 7/10
11. Suspect- favorite chorus ever 10/10
12. Shootouts- dope song, raw beat but gets old FAST and makes you not wanna listen to it again because for some reason it feels like it drags on for days 8/10
13. Live Nigga Rap- basement DANK. Songs grimier then soap scum. The beat is unforgiving, it sounds like they're tightly confined in a stair case and everyones just wildin out 10/10
14. If I Ruled the World- one of nas's greatest songs. not a personal favorite but theres no problems with it what so ever so it's perfect 10/10.
* Silent Murder- hearing it for the first time now, so i'll review later if i feel like it

Lyrics, Wordplay, Beats... but most importantly, his flow is relentless... Everything is impeccable... 10/10... And I also never understood why Black Girl Lost gets so much hate from people... I always liked it...

It seems like people hate on IWW because it wasn't Illmatic which is stupid really... IWW is a completely different album than Illmatic but that doesn't make it a bad album... It's a classic and it just MIGHT be Nas' best overall album...

Was Genius ever a psychophat?

(well ok, there is a thin line between crazy and genius tho...)

that's way different though, gza makes it clear that it is a story we're listening to. it's like accusing an actor for not being the role he plays in real life. but with nas he really tried to be something he never were and it reflects in the music in a way that it doesn't sound true to himself. so it definitely can affect the music; although with It Was Written, nas gets away with it becuz the LP is just that damn good.

How did some of these herbs give this an average rating. Even 6 & 7s? If this isn't a classic, it's the closest thing to it.

I swear if the first post stated classic, half of the dickriders in here would of went with that over their own opinion.

This album is not a Classic.

Shit's a personal classic...it's a wintertime joint. You gotta walk around your neighborhood with this bumpin' in ya walkman/mp3 player when there's ice on the ground and snow covering the grass. It's not a summer, spring, or fall album.

Nah I'd definitely say it's a Summertime album, got that whole Golden feel to it, it's got a warmth for sure.

But that is a problem for me on this album - all the songs have a similar feel, like beyond cohesion and then it ventures into same ol' beat 12 times over area.

Great album regardless.

If you compare it to God's Son, Nigger, and Illmatic you can't really say this is a classic.
But a good album overall.

stop being such an attention whore, Nigger wasn't that good, seriously, IWW was and is my fav. Nas album. Beats are bangin', maybe not as hard as on Illmatic, but lyrically he killed your mother, bought her a hat and drove past the police station a few times.

It deserves a good 8/10... but no is this album a 10.

Ofcourse yes, this is Nas's second best album.. but it's not a Classic.

Nas HAS only 1 classic and that's Illmatic.

i gave it a 8 because it had large number of classic tracks

Message, I Gave You Power, Shootouts(my fav), The Set Up, but it also had too many mediocre tracks.

Also i think that flow on this album is on the same level as illmatic, and after this album he never rapped on his albums like he did on first two(except for a few songs).

This album is not a Classic.

This is not an average (5), 6 or 7 album either. It's his third best album behind Illmatic & Stillmatic imo.

9.5-10 / 10

def a classic

I play this more than Illmatic.

Thats a good point.

Thinking about it really hard I would give
'Illmatic' 9/10
and 'It Was Written' 8.5 - 9/10

but 'It Was Written' definately gets more plays.
I'm gonna throw 'Illmatic'in my car when I get home

for me better than illmatic

real recognize real. all these people giving IWW less than a 9 dont know shit. IWW was better than Illmatic, that mainstream crossover was just a media blowup to make people think IWW wasnt on par with Illmatic.

Nas stepped up his lyricism on IWW and the beats were more sinister and gritty.

IWW = classic 10/10 album.

Only songs i liked on It Was Written is Street Dreams, I Gave You Power, Take It In Blood, Live Nigga Rap, If I Ruled The World. What a shame he hasn't made a good album since Illmatic because he's a ill mc. Bad beats is the reason why i think most of his albums suck.

My review for It was Written

1) Album Intro: A slave intro, I know it was suppose to be serious. But I kinda thought it was funny ''Dam deez chains'' 5/10

2) The Messege: This is the song that had the FIrst verse piss off pAC. But this track is considered one of the best hip hop songs ever. And its hard to deny that. 10/10

3) Street dreams: This track is okay, The sample was also on ''All eyez on me'' from Pac ironically. Lyrically okay, but it sounds dumbed down compared to normal Nas. 6/10

4) I gave you power: The 2nd best song on the album (Behind Messege) Talking from the perspective of a gun...Wow...That is a fucking amazing idea. Only Nas could pull that off.Did I forget to mention Premier dis this. So theres no shock at how amazing it is 10/10

5) Watch dem niggaz: Not the best beat ever, And it sounds more like a ''Doggystyle'' era snoop track. '' I got no game, Its only bitches that understand my story'' I always liked that verse. 7/10

6) Take it in blood: It has an illmatic type of feel, just not as gritty 7/10

7) Nas is coming: A very odd collab, They wouldnt hit their stride until ''The firm'' album (Under rated by the way) The hook is okay, lyrically Nas sounds out of place on this Dre beat. but the beat is amazing nonetheless. 7/10

8) Affirmative Action: This song set up the aforementioned Firm group. With Az starting it off perfect. Cormega would have been a better member for the Firm instead of Nature, and he proves that on this amazing song, The beat is classic. 10/10

9) The Set up: A mobb deep beat from the jump. Havoc is a good producer, Just not insanely versatile. Nas crushed it regardless. 8/10

10) Black girl lost: Great subject that needs to be addressed more often. 9/10

11) Suspect: Great old school beat. Illmatic style 10/10

12) Shootouts: The sample of the Avengers is perfect in the begining. This album doesnt have as many stories as I would like, but this song makes up for it. 9/10

13) Live nigga rap: Havoc sounded in his prime on this track, The old school record scratch effect works perfect. 9/10

14) If I ruled the world: Lauren hill/Nas. What more can be said. Its the world if Nas had control and he paints the picture of any hood persons dreams. 9/10

Overall: 116/140

After listening this album for a long time, and listening illmatic for a long time, i started noticing all the up's and down's of this album.

Although nas is not at the same mode as on illmatic, he really perfected his flow, and when pure rhyming is consered this album is great, but its not even close to illmatic when it comes to replay value.

Certain songs like black girl lost, and street dreams are never in my repertoir, but message is great, live nigga rap is just live nigga rap, set up is pure storytelling art from nas, as the shootouts, take it in blood and watch de niggaz have that illmatic vibe, i gave you power is pure fire, affirmative action never grew on me, but the beat is really nice, nas is coming also never did it for me....

and yeah silent murder is really great, but somehow doesn't fit the album...

Not sure why people don't like Street Dreams, it's killer.

Listening to It Was Written reminds me that pretty much no one in hip hop can flow anymore.

Listen to Nas or Method Man flow on a beat pre 2000, and then listen to something like OB4CL2...

" I gave you power" = classic.

This song is probably Nas' career highlight.

I Gave You Power is definitely the gem of the album.

Check it, it was so dope that during his beef with Pac, the song(which may I remind you, didn't mention him in the slightest) ended their beef. That's how much Pac liked it. And afterward, Pac created Me and my Girlfriend, inspired by Nas's song.

this is like exhibit a in why nas is probably the greatest of all time. lyrically. not as good as illmatic i think, not just cos of production but also it kind of had a nostalgic, excited feel to it. magic actually.

but all the songs especially the first 5 basically put other rappers to shame, flow, use of language, reality, stories, message etc. also his voice is perfect.

this album is dope but dr dre diahrread down his leg with that shitty beat, and why nas is coming? cos dr dre fucked him with that stank beat?

Silent Murder the bonus track in the Uk is one of my favourite Nas tracks and probably my favourite of that album. The lyrics might not be as good as Illmatic, but I dig his flow and theme better than his 1st. I appreciate what Illmatic is a master piece, but I prefer to listen to this

PANDA PISS

Lyrically i think its a step up. The production is very different to Illmatic, trackmasters have a mainstream sound but they still gave it a dark tone that fits with the really grimy stuff like 'suspect' and 'live nigga rap'. The production inspired some of Nas' best songs.

I think the lyrics and themes on this are quite deep, and Nas just improves with darker and deeper raps.

I don't know if its better than Illmatic, thats almost if not a perfect album. But its a classic.
