Drum 'n' Bass kinda falls into two categories. There's the Goldie/Ronie Size quite intricate shit, and the Andy C/Brockie/Nicky Blackmarket side with big pulsating basslines and usually Eksman and co. mcing over it.

I'm more into the second type. I don't really go raving much anymore, but I do still love a bit of D'n'B once in a while. My mate Styla is one fo the best d'n'b mcs I've ever heard and has performed at Mass in Brixton and some other places.

Just came across this.

http://stylusmagazine.com/articles/staff_top_10/top-ten-dnb-basslines.htm

Staff Top 10Top Ten DnB Basslines

http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/stt-061020.jpg

http://stylusmagazine.com/images/big_i.gifn its early days, DnB leaned towards the "D," as the genre emphasized mashing up drum breaks into crazy, rat-a-tat patterns. Usually, a few strategically placed 808 booms would suffice for bottom end. However, the late '90s saw a shift to simpler, more regular beats. Basslines accordingly compensated in complexity and became the main impetus for tunes. Around London, the conventional wisdom was that a kicking b-line and a good snare were all you needed for a tune. In some cases, merely the former could send a 12" flying off the shelves. If you hear the sound system at Fabric in London, you'll not just understand the importance of basslines to DnB—you'll feel it.

Below are 10 moments in DnB low end that have made people (a) dance wildly, (b) lose their minds, and/or (c) make babies. DnB connoisseurs, if there are any left, will notice some glaring omissions—no DJ Trace, no Bad Company, no Juice or True Playaz records, and so on. That's the breaks, so to speak, of a top 10 list.

10. Origin Unknown - "Truly One"
This was perhaps the epitome of "tummy bass" (sometimes called "wobble bass"), a DnB trend in the mid-'90s. As the term suggests, on a proper system the b-line would resonate through one's innards, if not one's genitals. This 12" was pressed loud as hell and would wreak serious havoc if the DJ didn't watch his levels. This was probably the only DnB tune ever to sample Richard Nixon ("For one priceless moment in the whole history of man, all the people on this earth are truly one").
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-10.mp3)]

09. Matrix - "Mute '98"
Matrix is one Jamie Quinn, brother of Matt, aka Optical. Matrix has made some of the sexiest, most sinuous b-lines known to man (and hopefully woman). "Mute '98" was seriously stoned business, with simple beats and a b-line that engulfed dancefloors. The synth chords were curiously reminiscent of The Doors' "Light My Fire."
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-09.mp3)]

08. Photek - "Knitevision"
In recent years, Photek has made increasingly distorted and hairy sounds. Back in the day, though, he was the Samurai of DnB, with scalpel-sharp beats and precise b-lines. "Knitevision" was a sculpted marvel of tick-tock snares, with a percussive b-line that was devastating at high volume.
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-08.mp3)]

07. DJ Krust - "Warhead"
This b-line was maligned by some for its utter simplicity, but therein lay its effectiveness. Three notes, that was it—and after 32 bars, a fourth. Big and bouncy, this tune caused universal knees-up dancing and lager spillage. Like most DnB, it sounded innocent in headphones, but writ large, it lived up to its name.
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-07.mp3)]

06. Capone - "Friday"
Capone is one of the many aliases of Dillinja, aka Karl Francis, who could occupy this entire list by himself. No DnB producer strikes more fear in sound engineers. Since day one, he has been a student of bass, going so far as to design his own sound system to go with his tunes. Dillinja's b-lines have run the gamut from deadly deep subs to full-on growlers. "Friday" was one of his more laidback productions; warm tummy bass, rolling beats, and a "Thank God it's Friday" sample that filled dancefloors without fail.
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-06.mp3)]

05. DJ Rap - "Hardstep"
One of the few prominent women in DnB, DJ Rap is responsible for one of its all-time classics, "Spiritual Aura." "Hardstep" would come next on the resume; it had irresistible percussion and one of the liveliest basslines ever made, in any genre of music. I would kill to know how she got that sound. My guess? Tummy bass sine waves through an overdriven mixing board, perhaps with slight LFO.
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-05.mp3)]

04. PFM - "One and Only"
PFM stands for "Progressive Future Music" and that means simple, dubby 808 subs sketch out a sexy, loping rhythm in one of atmospheric DnB's all-time greatest tunes.
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-04.mp3)]

03. Roni Size & Reprazent - "Brown Paper Bag"
Except for #2 here, I have never seen a tune wind waists so effectively. In the late-'90s, DnB had a brief trend of tunes with standup basslines, and "Brown Paper Bag" ruled them all. Appropriately, the 12" came in a sleeve that looked like a brown paper bag.
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-03.mp3)]

02. Alex Reece - "Pulp Fiction"
This is hands-down the sexiest DnB bassline ever. It's warm, eerie, and comes with crisp beats with the slightest hint of swing. If any DnB tune were made for the catwalk, this would be it. Incidentally, the bassline is sampled from MC Solaar's "Dévotion," off the Prose Combat album. Has no one else spotted this yet???
[LISTEN (http://www.stylusmagazine.com/images/st10/061020-02.mp3)]

01. Ed Rush, Optical & Fierce - Cutslo (Lokuste Mix)
No one called this tune by its ridiculous title. It will always be known as the "Locust Remix," as it was a rerub of Ed Rush & Fierce's "Locust," which had a nasty b-line in its own right. The No U-Turn crew (Ed Rush, Nico, Fierce, Trace, and, later, Optical) helped pioneer DnB's techstep sound in the late-'90s. Basically, they sat around, smoked tons of weed, sampled stabs from old Belgian techno records, and ran basslines through guitar distortion pedals to get the darkest, harshest sounds possible. The "Locust Remix" was the culmination of that. Distorted basslines had been around for some time when this appeared on dubplate in '97, but people were unprepared for its sheer ferocity. When I heard Grooverider play this, it got rewound an astonishing three times. People were screaming and pounding the walls of the club, absolutely losing their shit. Now that's a bassline.

I'm more into the side of D'n'B that contains less MCing types. That british shit pisses me off with all that crap. I prefer a lot of the US style (even though a lot of the good artists are not even from US, I don't know how to describe the different types) and a lot of what Crust listed, that's probably more my style. I listen to a few good stations online.

Anyone have that 'Technical Freaks - Destruction Ritual' album?

yeah i used to go to alot of festivals. got paid to do security for a couple too. I've seen pretty much every band/artist that I've wanted to see so I'm not too fussed.

Are you one of those dudes that''s still chewing his face off at dance festivals when your in your late 40's? :lmao:

Lol I love meeting people like that at festivals! It always puts me in a good mood when i see a guys like that giving it beans on the dance floor!

Creamfields was awesome!

Highlight of the whole thing was High Contrast! Andy C was dope aswell! Dynamite was doing his usuall thing (he cant MC for shit but he always gets the crowds hyped up!)

me and my mate got these herbal high pills when we were in there called "Hummers" and i tell u what they were fuckin awesome! had some MDMA with us aswell but we didnt need it! these thing actually did the job! better than most "Es" ive had in my younger days lol

hallo~!

Here's a VJ set I put together. I had pre-arranged the mix before hand, but the visuals are being mixed on the fly. The set consists of liquid drum and bass mixed in with some hip hop / r&b. Hope none of y'all are epileptic, lots of flashing lights n' shit....

p.s. don't mind the gas mask.....i just threw that on for fun...

Big dnb/jungle fan so if people feel this thread i will keep on posting all styles in it , I don't know if people like dnb or not. .

Classic song in dnb, those samples fuck me up in the head big time. dark and dirty.

Classic, one of my all time favourite songs and my favourite dnb song.

For those that don't know dnb/garage/dubstep\other electronic genres in the UK also heavily utilise mcing. There's some quality mcing in drum and bass. (although different from US hip hop for obvious reasons)

Classic radio set. 90's business

Tz3tD09jNjA

Don;t know how they remember all these bars and fuck knows how mc's double time, its a different dimension and style to emceeing from the US,
inspired by the Jamaican tradition of toasting (itself loosely derived from West Africa)

Serious double timing and flow and 4:10.

Was a big LTJ Bukem fan. Still am. Mixmag 3 (also knows as Mixmag 21) and Rebirth are two of my favourite lps ever. Logical Progression 1 is also brilliant. His later stuff is good but its the early stuff that is classic for me. Lot of good releases from that record label too - again my pref is the early intelligent d+b stuff - BigBud - Blame etc.

The best musical night of my life was seeing him play in my town - total fuckin mentality. Lovely happy vibe - everyone off their nut getting into this killer groove. The MCing by DRS and Conrad was something else also. Happy days. (Edit - agree very much it not hiphop style MCing - very different but well impressive when it's right)

Yeah I like LTJ (what i've heard you know the obvious ones like Atlantis- heavy tune)

I think people nowadays are generally frustrated with him because Good Looking Records has a non existent release schedule and aside from him he has talent like Furney

aLSO have you heard of Fracture/Paradox/Neptune- I think they can be broadly classified as intelligent dnb, I know Paradox deffo uses chopped up breakbeats etc.

I heard Venetian Snares is pretty big.

Also if u like ragga jungle listen to:

Serial Killaz
David Boomah
Top Cat
General Levy (-Ali G)
Shy FX/Uk Apache- I'm sure u know classic

Bladerunner

I expected this thread from a dude with a metalheadz avatar, lmao

But yeah, I'm an old dnb head. I see dnb as being more of a 90's/early 00's thing but my musical interest always evolves and dubstep has been my main focal point as of 2010+

I wonder what cross-genre amalgamation will take over my head in the next few years.....

Shadow Demon

^ haha joker, i also chose it cuz its a dope logo. truth be told metalheadz isnt my favourite label but some serious gold on there.

i like dubstep but i cant be bothered to delve in it, i prefer dnb still tho. i find gash dubstep is more gash than gash dnb tho

some my fav dubstep. Most stuff i like is the older stuff not the newer when i really got into it.

Excellent drum patterns

^ cheers man - will check out those suggestions. Agree dnb is late 90s/early 00's but have dabbled a bit mostly unsuccessfully in dubstep - maybe im getting too old - but that Burial is good stuff.

This is the album id recommend from LTJ - http://www.amazon.com/Mixmag-Live-3-Ltj-Bukem/dp/B000003QM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338505796&sr=8-1

Back in the 80's I was a metal kid so it's good to see EDM go full circle and start to implement it again.

Right now 'SKEPTIKS' is my ish...

Some nice tracks in the first post. Never got that into dnb and Jungle but been listening to some while rediscovering 90s garage. Always liked the skewed dnb that dBridge and Instra:Mental make also.

I delved through the dark depths and boundaries of drum and bass and found

LIMEWAX

It's just pants that he hasn't been releasing as much material as he used to and has moved away from dark dnb to hardcore/gabba which is shit imo

I dont like High Contrast or London Electricity though, never got the liquid sound, too polished and commercial sounding for my likes. Give me Technical Itch or Dom & Roland any day.

What do you think of Konichi? he usually does like dubstep/half time dnb, but i like this song, it has a really nice warm bassline

I used to be a massive drum n bass head, I know all the producers and DJs, but sudently I lost all my interest in this kind of music and I just dont listen to it anymore or go to partys.

but in my opinion the sickest producer right now in dnb is SPY , and the best DJ ever is Ed Rush ( sick selection )

but since this is a Wu-Tang forum :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7vZn1EE2o8

I just love this tune!
