An associate of rap superstar 50 Cent awoke to the sound of gunshots outside the Staten Island home of his girl friend yesterday morning, police sources say.
Around 4:45 a.m. about a dozen shots were fired at the Tappen Court home that 32-year-old ex-con Barja Walter was staying at with his girl friend and three kids. According to sources, shots were fired at the house, located in a row of townhouses with yellow siding, and at Walter's bulletproof SUV. The unknown assailant(s) also poured some sort of flammable liquid into a garbage can outside the home and ignited it.
According to sources, Walter told cops that the shots woke him up, but no one was hurt in the shooting. Cops say that Walter does not live at the residence full time.
He also told cops that he put the fire out with a garden hose and does not know why anyone would want to harm him.
Walter, who also goes by the name Jahlill Bethel, served a three-month stint in prison in 2004 on a felony weapons charge, public records show.
In 2006 he was questioned in the shooting of the body guard for rapper Busta Rhymes but was not considered a suspect. In 2000 50-Cent hired a lawyer to represent Walter in a case where he was suspected at firing at a group of cops outside a housing project but all charges were eventually dropped.
An investigation is ongoing
