Techno music originated from Detroit in the mid 80s (around the same time as House was developing in Chicago), heavily influenced by electronic pioneers Kraftwerk and fusing elements of electro, disco and jazz.

Innovators include Juan Atkins (Cybertron), Derrick May, Carl Craig and Kevin Saunderson (Inner City).
Techno is characterised by electronic sounds, 4/4 disco beats (not breakbeats) and heavy bass and is usually instrumental.
It's a different genre to other forms of dance music, such as House, Trance, Big Beat, Dubstep etc
it uses repetitive loops, in similar fashion to the other types of dance music, but is not the same.
It's the original format.

all music that uses repetitive loops is not necessarily Techno, just as all music that uses rapping is not Hip Hop.

Anything from the Pulse Compilation, anything from The Prodigy, and anything from afrika bambaataa and jack jams.

techno has two meanings -- it's funny -- for europeans they mean stuff with no vocals, really underground "hard" stuff -- for americans, when they say "techno", often they mean what in europe is called "dance". And "dance" in europe is a lot more mainstream and pop-oriented

for "american" style techno (i.e. european "dance"), the best example I've found is this (itunes link):

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?albumTerm=Euro+Club+Hits+Vol +

strangely it's called "euro club hits" ... which makes things even more confusing ;

for "european" style techno... i.e. the stuff with no songs, I recommend going to www.beatport.com and checking out the stuff in the "techno" section --

i fucking heard this song like 10 or 11 times in one night once ...

once when i was walking to a club i could hear it in a club i went past ... it was played THREE times in the one club ... left the club and heard it in another one ... heard it in three cars driving past ... heard it in the cab i got in then heard it a couple more times in cars driving past when waiting for a bus home ... this song was a complete phenomenon was ruined because of over play
