oldie
08-20-2005, 06:50 AM
i mean, we have so many mc's that come from brooklyn is it? i cnt remember as im from the uk.
anyway, we have the wu, nas, 50...who else?? all of em call them selves the king of new york. who (in your opinion) is the king right now?

for me, the wu is depleted at the o, nas is a strong contender but not wiv streets disciple album but 50 is quite big so..nahmean. he could easily take the throne, and not to skill neither.

I would say Rakim, one of the greatest in my eyes.

Rakim, Kool G Rap, or Big Daddy Kane. i don't think anyone else can compete wit these guys. nas i wouldn't put because he had 2 really dope albums then the lost tapes. thats it, he hasn't put out heat in years he doesn't sound nearly as hungry or energetic in his rhymes as he used too.

you have to base it on recent shit, mixtapes, disses, albums, etc. my list would go as follows
start off with the fact that no one from nyc has put to gether a 4.5/5 or better album in quite a long time.

1. Nas (followed up a decent album with a superb 50 diss)
2. Jadakiss (see above)
3. Ghostface (hes putting in work this year, 3 albums due this year
4. Jay-Z (retired? nope.)
5. Juelz Santana (still a lot of room for improvement, if sheek louch ever puts out his album then we'll see who gets this spot.

edit this is not a GOAT list, this is just current

im really thinkin nas is a rlly strong contender like i said in the startin post, he has had a classic album - illmatic - although i beg to differ, he's got a lot of albums so im guessin he's fairly consistent, i only got all his albums las yr so i aint been followin him. but he is quite outspoken and well respected, he stands 4 what he believes in, bit like krs wiv his hip-hop certificate thing - only got 'keep right' from him so i dnt kno him rlly.

very true, but the crown comes from respect, the most respected MC with the lyrics, talent, and record sales to match gets it, and 50's got the record sales but little to no respect in the New York, and doesn't live there, but since Jay-Z had it, and was beat by Nas, I'd give it to Nas, Jada's on the raise though.

I agree with you almost 100% on this issue, except I think jay-z has way more relevance to hip-hop today and is also respected more than Nas or any other NY rapper today. I think this holds true for a majority of "heads" casual rap fans and actual rappers.

The title of KONY is vacant. Nas don't want that shit, Jay retired, and Rakim is so much bigger than that title yall shouldn't even bring his name up. So right now there's only three people who got a shot at the title IMO:

In my opinion Jigga killed nas. Takeover was a much better song and broke down exactly how most people felt about nas's career at that point. Ether was like a kindergarded diss resorting to basic name calling such as, "I'm not stupid, you're stupid". And the beat was boring.

do u know what a king is??

understand the duties of a king and what a kings actions are supposed to do

Well our definition is different then.......I thought the post was "who is the King of New York" present time........

If so I believe this to be true:

last 4 kings of NEW YORK:

1994: NAS
1995-1997: Biggie
1998-2003: Jay-Z
2004-present: 50 CENT

I think that you have to have a level of popularity to be called the king of NEW YORK

these dudes were the hottest things coming out of NEW YORK at these times, there music was played everywhere, and peeps in NEW YORK could not get enough.

sure back in 1988 RAKIM could be called the king of NEW YORK, but today, I dont think so, dude is not even on a record label.

I would say, there was a time back in the 1980's, where you could say KOOL G RAP was the king of NEW YORK........but today, I dont think so
do u know what a king is??

understand the duties of a king and what a kings actions are supposed to do

Kings n queens dont become kings and queens outta popularity contests. The queen of the united kingdom would get nasty torture methods if she got caught up in Scotland man.

They either inherit power, take it, or are voted it.

50 cent can never be the King of NYC, he cant even live there lmao!

ya but, hate it or not, 50 CENT has been the biggest thing from NEW YORK in the last 3 years........he owned the mixtape circuit, has got tons of records sales, and been the most popular figure and on the biggest label in rap.....

.....alot of people dont want to hear this, but it is the truth
U got a point there but 50 is not the King of NYC. Mofo lives in Cali coz hed get wasted there.

Aye but its aimed at the rap game. No pop music.I think dudes like BIGGIE, JAY-Z, and even NAS all had elements of pop in there music..........I dont really think that 50 CENT is much different in these terms

so if you do some songs with pop elements.....you are not in the rap game ???

I would be hard pressed to come up with a rapper who has any popularity over the last 20 years that did not have pop elements???

to be king of new york in "Hip Hop" terms, people from ya own hood, ur own fuckin state have to like u, people scream out g-unot when he performs, wuld kinda king is one that has all his people cheerin for his enemy

To be honest, I think there is large part of NEW YORK that likes 50 CENT.......you may have heard some G-Unot chants somewhere but his albums still sell in NY....... .where does all his record sales come from then? He basically got his start in the new York mixtape scene

Listen man. Biggie was that fuckin good he ended up commercially successful anyhow. Same wit Jigga and Nas. Add 2pac there too. 50 is manufactured JUST to sell. No fuckin message at all. The whole airbrushed images (even though he got a good build anyhow), the lyrics braggin bout being smoked 9 times is annoyin, he even got adverts counting down the gunshots hahaha! Dammmnn. 50 cent is as manufactured as they come n the kids done well for himself. Ill give him credit. But those who be believing his lyrics are real need a check up. Real recognise real and although he got the kiddies n woman loving screamin his name, you dont hear many real rap cats feelin his shit.

If I ever rapped Id wanna get my message across, n hope it sells. I wouldnt make up messages knowin they would sell to the majority of dudes who be buying albums ie kids n females. But thats just me. Peace.

Sounds like you really just dont like 50 CENT.......which is understandable, I dont really like him that much either..........I also agree that, the way hip hop is in 2005 the marketing is such that shit is manufactured and shit.

I would not say that 50 CENT is manufactured.....he did actually get shot, he did sell crack, and he did go to jail..........What I do think dude does is, he keeps selling this shit to the public, ya it is gay, I agree......thsoe album covers are wack too.......but that is basically hip hop in 2005, sell the product at all costs, if 50 has his shirt off girls will buy more cd's..........the marketing machine in hip hop 2005 is like 100x more than it was in the 1990's.....shit is corporate now.........Hip Hop in 2005 is used to sell fuckin hamburgers and cell phone jingles..........

I dont think that 50 CENT is doing anything different than anyone else would do if they were in that position in 2005. If you look at any other rap crew out there, DIPSET, D-Block, etc......they are all trying to be G-UNIT, all these fools would be selling clothing lines, shoes, etc if they could........HIP HOP is just like that in 2005, its just about making money....50 CENT just happens to be the most successful at it right now.........

In 2005 there really is no such thing as "selling out" as EVERYONE you see on TV has sold out.......all these so called Gangsta rappers, they all do the RnB crossover joints now, they all want or have the corporate sponsorships......this is just hip hop in 2005.........thanks PUFFY

yo just throwin shit out there...you cant be sittin on the thrown if youre dead, retired, or just out of touch. We're in 2005, alotta those people have been gone a long ass time now. so with that I think there is no real king of NY right now...the illest are underground, and then the one making the biggest moves are 50 cent, but really he has no talent, talks alotta shit, n if you think about it there are endless diss tracks bout him that people really feel. The spot is vacant, and I'm not from NY but I do know that I really was feelin Fat Joe's album and Jadakiss' as well, not sayin they're on the throne, but theyre looking kinda hungry for it right now...the spot is open, waitin to be taken by the hungriest.

Currently its cam'ron. People in new york love him and the dips (especially in Harlem). I've never heard of killa and his crew bein booed off stage in new york. And people really shouldn't be bringin up names like rakim, jay, biggie or even wu for that matter. Them niggaz is like the O.G's of N.y. who everybody has respect for, but thier time has come and gone. They'll have thier place in history, but they won't be king again. I'm hopin DMX comes back with another grimy classic and he returns to the throne which is possible.
