I'm not sure what you mean by positivity

DJ Kool - Let Me Clear My Throat
ATCQ & Busta - Scenario
Hip Hop Hooray ?
etc

I don't know .. are you talking about these kind of tracks or you talking about that gay kanye shit ?

Edgar Erebus

it kills a songs replay value and is often corny.
plus i don't like getting messages of self improvement about shit i don't do
like calling my black women a bitch, or partying my life away, drinking my life away, smoking my life away, fucking my life away cause my seeds grow up the same way

Man.

Therefore:

- You don't like positive message rap 'cause it's corny and without replay value.
- You don't like braggadoccio or "real hip-hop" 'cause it's weak subject matter.
- You don't like thugging 'cause it's played out.
- You don't like mafioso shit 'cause it's too gimmicky.
- Same for revolutionary rap.

So... You only like money raps and sex shit?

I say again, purse an A&R career, you'd make millions.

So, what's entertaining shit? Flossing? Looking at what you dislike, it's basically the only thing you don't hate. Yeah, flossing is entertaining, but it rather quickly becomes tired - at least in my book.

Oh, yeah, I forgot storytelling. What's your opinion on that?

I kinda agree. Its like the older I get the less I listen to all that "concious" rap bullshit. I used to listen to Common, Talib all the time, now i never do. Its boring.

Give me a CD though of Jeezy calling himself "Mr 17-5" then im hooked.

Its like choosing to watch the Soprano's or choosing to watch Black History month programming on History TV. Or a MLK doc. Yes ive watched MLK docs, but once youve seen it once, you dont want to go see it over and over.

i like all that shit if it's done correctly just like anyone else, i just think it gimmicky, but so is the Colbert Report, doesn't make it an unwatchable show.

flossin was cool in like, 1999-2000 for me, then got old about 2001, i just like good music though, except if it's positive, then i don't care about the quality, the corn overpowers it

but give me something like, no gimmick, no message, just redman being a fuck up. that's dope.

Funny.

I can't really argue about that. I adore technique rappers, Rakim, Talib, Nas, KRS style rappers. To me it's greatly important that a rapper has skills. That's why I'll always rather listen to Special Ed or Edo G, no matter how corny or played out his matter is, than most original and cool song by Lil Wayne or someone like that. If such a song has a dope subject matter or nice storytelling, even better.

Plus went completely opposite direction than Ghostlaced. Two years ago I was completely into money, guns, bitches and drugs. Now THAT shit is boring as hell to me - so I prefer to hear Common or Talib dropping a love song. Or Nas philosophing on N word. Not to even mention Public Enemy.

Commons shit isn't all on some positive shit, TSA I have a feeling you might like his first 2 albums, although there is some positivity on them. I like Common but other than that I know what you mean. Some of those positive songs just feel like they weren't meant for us, they're usually aimed at young ghetto kids. Some of them are really cheesy but I think its tough to pull off uplifting without sounding like a naive dreamer. 'A Better Tomorrow' is incredible though, I think because we all walk that thin line. Me personally I definetly feel that I have to constantly watch my behaviour and make sure im doing the right thing. Its not even just about positivity. Its about making a stand to live your life as a man.

i think i gotta co-sign that. as far as positive rap goes, i still like old native tongues, krs, jeru and the like.

but one thing i love about those ultramagnetic mc's basement tapes albums is how negative the content is. every song has a title like "you ain't shit" "fuck you" "talkin' out ya ass" etc. and they're all hilarious. i think that negative stuff is often more entertaining. krs even said his own "self destruction" song was corny. necessary but corny.

You're right alot of that overly-positive shit can be corny as fuck, but to me a song can be positive without trying to stuff an obvious and annoying message down your throat. Just good music that's not negative and has really 'fun' (trying not to come off gay, couldn't find a better word) and dope vibes is positive to me.

But I'm surprised by how many people don't feel Common, okay he does do alot of preachy shit but when he waants to he cn be a BEAST on the mic, and his catalogue has so much dope stuff eg. Payback is a Grandmother

I agree with Pat but with a less antagonistic tone. TSA I think you are over-analysing it just a bit. Hip hop doesn't need to be broken down by subject matter, just try to appreciate the music for what it is and attempt to look at it as a whole instead.

ignorant people like you kill hip-hop. you are probably some suburban white kid whose mom packed him lunch for school and tucked him into bed reading him disney stories.

Any person with a brain can see that the black community and other areas that are flooded with poverty need change. Conscious artists such as Common, Talib, Mos Def, Lupe, and the Roots preach about change in the black community and the world because they have lived and experienced life in the hood, and they don't want people to continue going through that bullshit, so they make music that motivates people to change shit. We need music like that. I'd rather hear positive records than people talking about how much loot they have, dealing drugs, or murdering each other.

Music is music, and though i find rugged shit entertaining and bangin, I appreciate the conscious tracks.

I know you won't understand because you are a close minded miserable fuck who sits at home playing 36 chambers all day, jerking off to soft core porn, and bitching about how everything is wack on the Wu-tang forum.

Anybody who has struggled and seen fucked up shit in their communities should feel where i'm coming from, folks need that motivational music.

Then my ears got mature and i embraced the positive and negative sides of rap from the M.o.p and Z-ro to q-tip and the pharcyde, positive rap for me is just feel good music which is why i said the pharcyde.
