Bosnian Serb wartime president Radovan Karadzic, wanted for genocide and crimes during the Bosnian war, was arrested near Belgrade after 11 years on the run, in disguise and working as a doctor.

Karadzic's arrest was one of the main conditions of Serbian progress towards European Union membership and may be enough to secure Serbia closer ties with the EU and possibly the status of membership candidate state this year.

Serbian officials said on Tuesday Karadzic was arrested on Monday near Belgrade. They showed reporters a photograph of an unrecognizable Karadzic, thin and with a long, white beard and flowing hair.

He was working for a private doctor, posing as a specialist in alternative medicine, said Rasim Ljajic, Serbia's point man for cooperation with The Hague war crimes tribunal.

Officials said he had been living in New Belgrade.

"He happily, freely walked around the city," Serbia's war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic told reporters. "Even the people he rented a flat from were unaware of his identity."

Serbian President Boris Tadic said in a terse statement on Monday that Karadzic had been detained.

People poured in celebration onto the streets of Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital which Karadzic's troops shelled mercilessly in a 43-month siege during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Finally, that guy was responsible for thousands and thousands of deaths...

1 down, 2 to go.

I think now that Kostunica isn't Prime Minister, we have a slightly better organized police that is dedicated to capture the war criminals.

Did you figure that yourself out? Or did you hear Nikolic and Vucic say that and said "Hey, they're saying they're patriots! I wanna be a patriot! Woohoo", and engraved in your mentality that a war criminal who directly slaughtered entire villages filled with innocent people...

And then you wonder why Kosovo doesn't want to be in the same country with us...

Smh @ fake patriots & hypocrites.

He's A Hero.

Oho, look at him coming out!

You know, when Gotovina was on the run and everyone was saying he's a hero and all that shit, I was always saying that if he was just a hero he'd turn himself in gladly, 'cause he wouldn't have nothing to fear. But he didn't. He ran away and only confirmed he's an usual criminal.

Lol (First time I'm using this) @ your fact beliefs. You're actually relishing the prospect of going back to the 90's when you lived like shit, than in the 00's when you live as good as a country with a sick community can.

Oho, look at him coming out!

Exactly ^

A hero isn't running from his country.

A fugitive is running from his country.

How long do you think it will be until he gets the death penalty?

He's not gonna get the death penalty, who's gonna trial him, he's supposed to be delivered to Hague tribunal but they're shutting the place down in 2010, and it usually takes more than 2 years to sentence someone

Well if not the death penalty, he'll be behind bars for the rest of his life. Who's he a hero to? Serial Killers?

They're shutting down in 2013 (after 20 years), 2010 is last year to start any trial. They're talking about Karadzic getting speedy trial or something (they're prolly scared that he could "die" like Milosevic).
