A question regarding reputation

I know this question has probably been posted before but I kind of don't understand the whole system. I've been a member of WTC ever since '06. They're members here who haven't been here as long as I have who can give reputation and receive reputation like it's nothing. Members like me however experience something different. We're good posters and yet we receive no reputation. I'd like to why certain members are not receiving any reputation? Thanks.
