I saw a performance in Copenhagen where Nas played a great set with all the classics this Sunday and after that i've been breaking down all his albums. just check "Stillmatic", it should have been 10 tracks just like the original "Illmatic" and it would be a fucking incredible album that way.

01. Stillmatic Intro
02. Ether
03. Got Yourself A Gun
04. You're Da Man
05. Rewind
06. One Mic
07. 2nd Childhood
08. Destrroy & Rebuild
09. The Flyest (ft. AZ)
10. What Goes Around

if the album was presented this way I could understand the 5 mic rating it got from the source. all tracks there are 10/10 or 9/10

^^ good observations ... if only he did it like that!

when you look at the great records of our time from say led zeppelin, marvin gaye, bob dylan, black sabbath, pink floyd, ray charles ... all those bands/artists they weren't releasing records 16,17,18,23 songs deep ... their stuff is flawless because it's 5,6,7 absolute great tracks

hip hops problem has always been too much filler

the majority of the true classic records are short ... but that's why i hail OB4CL as the best because it was longer

it's not always the case but for the most part more songs drags records down

^^ yes that is true, i've been thinking alot about that too... exactly the same actually, with Cuban Linx also being 18 perfect joints deep, "Ready to Die" is 16 songs but it ain't flawless though.....

but where do one draw the line between album and EP, how many songs should it be to be an album or is it more about how much time it is... like the Show & AG:s "Live Hard" they released now (which is a 5/5 for me - i think you gonna love it if you haven't heard it, the first album I gave 5/5 since Cannibal Ox in 2002). it's only 7 tracks long on about 25 minutes plus they have 5 instrumentals so it's 12 tracks with the instrumentals of the first 5 songs... would you call that an album or an Ep?

an LP usually is 30-35 minutes or more isn't it? ... or does it go by how many tracks are on it? i think an LP has to have 6 or 7 tracks on it totalling atleast 30 minutes but most hip hop cd's are atleast an hour and usually upwards of 80 minutes which is around 17-20 songs depending on length ... but yeah i get your point ...

artists should try sticking to the 8-12 mark because you really want to release the best songs ... alot of good albums could easily have been classic because of length

all eyez on me is a PERFECT example ... scrap the second disc, replace the california love remix with the original and swap watz ya fone # for picture me rollin' and it's classic ... but it had a 2nd disc full of filler

Co-sign, that second disk is fuckin terrible. Personally id include "Shorty Wanna Be a Thug", always liked that song, but id scrap the rest.

Nice thread, and there all valid points. "Gods Son" to me has the best 4 opening tracks of any nas album, along with "Illmatic". When i sat down and played that album and heard those first 4 songs, i was literally amazed, i though this was going to be a classic. But of course, it SERIOUSLY dropped in quality after that.

I think though, the tracks that would be termed as 'filler' on "It Was Written" and "Stillmatic" are still pretty decent tracks, so i still think with those tracks included, those albums are bangers. Although, to save "I Am/Nastradamous" "Streets Desciple" and "Hip-Hop Is Dead" you'd need to take away a lot of tracks.

I HATED "Streets Desciple", did other people ig it?

^^ yes "I Am/Nastradamus" as one album still wouldn't be worth that much but if he would have released the original album with the 15 tracks or so thats still unreleased it would have been a great album (i put together the 2xCD the same way i put together the original "Bulletproof Wallets").

i actually liked the tracks I listed from "Street's Disciple" and "Hip-Hop is Dead" was a banger IMO - it actually got great reviews from almost all magazines and sites - i don't know why so many people hated on it. rapreviews.com gave it 10/10, i would give it a 8/10.
