my current desktop is using vista 32 bit, but I am building a new computer with these specs for gaming and for work (maps and autocad type shit)

Q6600 Core2 Quad (i think the one i bought was 2.4ghz each)
3 gigs of memory (i hear 32 bit doesn't really need more?)
ati radeon 4800 video card, shit allowed me to play fallout 3 and darkspace on a shitty single processor AMD 2.2 ghz, my guess is that the new processor will allow me to rock niggas this summer.

i want to install xp professional but i'm unsure whether 32 bit is preferrable to 64 bit, and whether or not professional is much better than home.

as a researcher, i really enjoyed the index search function of vista, but i think i will use software for searching pdfs and rock xp instead?

I have the same CPU, same RAM and a slightly better GFX card.

I use Vista Ultimate, and never ran into any problems with her. Certain games have to be run in compatibility mode (eg. The Witcher), other than that, it's great. Try Crysis on that configuration, all high dx10 settings. THe game is pretty aveage, but the graphis are stunning.

i guess with a phat processor the criticism of vista as a speed-drag becomes moot? i do like the vista aesthetic, but the uac system can be rather annoying.

Why don't you just do Dual OS?

I really Linux Fedora Core 9 ... thats what I have .. also Vista. But it's fucking annoying me recently, it has it's pros and cons.

It really depends on what you use your Computer for though.

yep. arcgis 9.3 was killing my single processor. i bought the quad to speed geoprocessing and for killing nazis.

i have a phat toshiba laptop, but it slows down for more complex GIS functions, so i decided to built a strong desktop for that. i hate twiddling my thumbs waiting for shit to build.

I will never part with my Windows XP Professional.

At least I won't change it for Vista.

I don't fully understand it, but my girl is an archaeologist, and she uses that GIS shit all the time for work. It is pretty cool.

She wants to work with ground-penetrating radar(insert smutty double-entendre here)

Vista is fine if you go beyond the minimum requirements to run the bitch. Shit is a ram hog, that's the only real problem I had with it.

good looking out. this is a truly phat os.

i agree that vista really has no improvement over xp, but it is a system hog.

any views on the differents between vista's graphic module (directX10) versus xp and direct 9?

I tried it too, it's way faster than Vista.

The computer with 1gig ram and a 3.0ghz CPU, and nVidia FX5200 ran the prebeta very smoothly without any problems. Vista on that computer is just inhumanely slow. Every 2 secs you get a Not Responding and you just wanna shit on the motherboard.

Can't wait for the final version of 7

vista is not total shit it's just too much of a gimmick, too parental, and too much of a suck-hog. but i haven't noticed any stability issues, yet.
