View Full Version : Major Celestial Event on December 1, 2008

Just after sunset, if you have an unobstructed view of the western sky, you'll be able to see the four brightest celestial objects in alignment with the earth, a rare event.

Earth - Countless plants and animals have lived and died here over the past several billion years

Sun - Just 8 minutes away from earth at the speed of light, it is the star which is the energy source for our solar system; without it the earth would be completely dark and frozen solid

Moon - Scientists say that without the well regulated effects of the moon there would probably be no higher forms of life on earth

Venus - Usually visible near the sun just after sunset or just before sunrise; it is the brightest object in the sky besides the sun and moon

Jupiter - Largest planet in our solar system; it is 1300 times larger than the earth, and scientists say that if it were just 75 times larger it would collapse into a star

Some people are noticeably affected by celestial events, such as a full moon, solstices, and planetary alignments such as the one we are experiencing on this date. If you are one of them, please post your experience on this Thread.

all I did was google the title of this thread and found that this - December 1 - Conjunction of Moon, Venus, and Jupiter. The crescent moon, Venus, and Jupiter will form a 3-degree triangle in the evening sky.

food for thought

how long is it supposed to last?

I think its just tonight or something. next full moon is on the 12 and this whole thing tonight is that there is a crescent moon. it makes a happy face.

The moon will move quickly away from this configuration, about 13 degrees per night. By the time the moon gets back to this spot in the sky in 4 weeks, Venus and Jupiter will be in different positions. Although Venus returns to this position in about 240 days, it will take Jupiter about 12 years. When Jupiter does return to this position, Venus may not be close like now. I'm not sure how often this configuration occurs, not even every 12 years...

a source says last time was in 1989 or so.
