This thread is for everybody, that doesn't like the Def Jux label or doesn't know them, I'll try to be as frequent with new songs as I can...

here's Aesop Rock - No Regrets [2001, album: Labor Days]

this is a fucking brilliant track, look what he did there!!! his flow, lyrics, ... Def Jux beats are known for being somewhat futuristic tho :) but I like it.

whGfOFOCE2s

Lucy was 7 and wore a head of blue barrettes
City born, into this world with no knowledge and no regrets
Had a piece of yellow chalk with which she'd draw upon the street
The many faces of the various locals that she would meet
There was Joshua, age 10
Bully up the block
Who always took her milk money at the morning bus stop
There was Mrs. Crabtree and her poodle
She always gave a wave and holler on her weekly trip down to the bingo parlor
And she drew: men, women, kids, sunsets, clouds
And she drew: skyscrapers, fruit stands, cities, towns
Always said hello to passers-by
They'd ask her why she passed the time
Attachin' lines to concrete
But she would only smile
Now all the other children living in or near her building
Ran around like tyrants, soaking up the open fire hydrants
They would say
"Hey little Lucy, wanna come jump double dutch?"
Lucy would pause, look, grin and say
"I'm busy, thank you much"
Well, well, one year passed
And believe it or not
She covered every last inch of the entire sidewalk,
And she stopped-
"Lucy, after all this, you're just giving in today?"
She said:
"I'm not giving in, I'm finished," and walked away

(Chorus: x2)
1 2 3
That's the speed of the seed
A B C
That's the speed of the need
You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it

Lucy was 37, and introverted somewhat
Basement apartment in the same building she grew up in
She traded in her blue barrettes for long locks held up with a clip
Traded in her yellow chalk for charcoal sticks
And she drew: little Bobby who would come to sweep the porch
And she drew: the mailman, delivered every day at 4
Lucy had very little contact with the folks outside her cubicle day
But found it suitable, and she liked it that way
She had a man now: Rico, similar, hermit
They would only see each other once or twice a week on purpose
They appreciated space and Rico was an artist too
So they'd connect on Saturdays to share the pictures that they drew
(Look!)
Now every month or so, she'd get a knock upon the front door
Just one of the neighbors,
Actin' nice, although she was a strange girl, really
Say, "Lucy, wanna join me for some lunch?"
Lucy would smile and say "I'm busy, thank you much"
And they would make a weird face the second the door shut
And run and tell their friends how truly crazy Lucy was
And Lucy knew what people thought but didn't care,
Cuz while they spread their rumors through the street
She'd paint another masterpiece

(Chorus x2)

Lucy was 87, upon her deathbed
At the senior home, where she had previously checked in
Traded in the locks and clip for a head rest
Traded in the charcoal sticks for arthritis, it had to happen
And she drew no more: just sat and watched the dawn
Had a television in the room that she'd never turned on
Lucy pinned up a life's worth of pictures on the wall
And sat and smiled and looked each one over just to laugh at it all
Now Rico, he had passed about 5 years back,
So the visiting hours pulled in a big flock o' nothin'
She'd never spoken much throughout the spanning of her life
Until the day she leaned forward, grinned and pulled the nurse aside
And she said:
"Look, I've never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do, but still haven't pursued
I knew what I wanted and did it till it was done
So I've been the dream that I wanted to be since day one!"
Well, the nurse jumped back -
She'd never heard Lucy even talk,
'Specially words like that
She walked over to the door, and pulled it closed behind
and Lucy blew a kiss to each one of her pictures and she died.

(Chorus x2)

kind of obvious that anything on cold vein ends this whole thread so ill just say it now.

Pop goes the flow of the weasel
Strapped with an Ox full of diesel
Trapped in the desert with eagles
Thoughts of ghetto acapellas in cathedrals
Spilling heavy gospels with cheaters

anyway, heres a b boy alpha, listen to that first verse, and the rest

I'd say Cold Vein is still the best album that Def Jux has put out but El-P' solo work is also very overlooked. Murs' album while he was on Def Juf The End of the Beginning remains my favorite solo album by him. Aesop of course is up there as well. I'm not really into Cage and Del's last solo he put out through Jux just wasn't that good.

Lol Sage Francis is not on or has never been on Def Jux, Cannibal Ox's Cold Vein is definitely the best album Def Jux have released.

Aesop Rock is their best lyricist, by far. His work is phenomenal, and he has a style that can't be copied, cuz nobody knows how to, LOL

only people that never listened to the best Def Jux albums remain haters. I know people that don't like them, but at least they recognize the talent...

^^^^^^El-P feat. Cage - Habeas Corpses (Draconian Love)

i had a period where i was into this type of hip-hop when i was like 15 but i grew out of it really.. but nothing touches Cannibal Ox debut album, that's just a straight-up classic, no question.

El-P's debut solo was pretty dope and so was "I Phantom" by Mr. Lif and Murs first Def Jux LP.. "Labor Days" has a bunch of incredible fucking beats on there and although i used to like him when i was younger i can't stand Aesop Rock and his mumbo-jumbo anymore. he got good lyrics on some joints though, like "No Regrets" and of course "Daylight".

yeah, I don't like the last two things Aesop released, but I still believe he has the most quality in his quantity. Both Can Ox fell down a bit, El-P and Cage are those two, who are holdin' the torch, plus C-Rayz Walz. I never liked Mr. Lif that much, he flows nice, but his lyrics are nothing special.

^^ yeah "Bazooka Tooth" was real weak, him and El-P didn't mix up well..
have you heard Blockhead's instrumental albums, i think it's his solo debut that i used to have that i listened to alot. really good beats but i don't know if that was on def jux??

shit i forgot C-Rayz Walz, that "Ravipops" album is probably my favorite Def Jux joint next to Can O.

mr. lif lyrics nothing special? seriously? damn, i wont say anything, but hard drugs do affect ones ability to think and comprehend things, so i will suggest rehab.

El-P "I'll Sleep When Your Dead" = what hardcore hip hop should sound like in the 2000s.
Cannibal Ox "the Cold Vein" = more evolved hardcore shit.
Cage "Hells Winter" = solid & honest hip hop when most is false and posturing.
Mr. Lif "I, Phantom" = great concept album with an mc who flows the entire album.

all good shit from def jux. they really do have one of the most talented rosters in hip hop. people sleep cause they dont promote ignorance like most hip hop has been regulated to doing. and they use all type of musical influence in their beats.

but mr. lif is one of the 10 best mcs in the game right now. i used to sleep on him, but that is impossible now.

mr. Lif have some songs where he doesn't have even one punchline or just a line that's memorable :/

but I'll try to listen to everything again. he has some nice songs tho

damn i gotta re-visit that again then because i had a official promo copy laying around since before the release date but have probably only bumped it a handfull of times over the years. i remember i thought it was good but a letdown from "Ravipops", but yeah i'll have to go back.
