You forgot the whole online thing GTAIV has...

It wins on that alone for me

But also the cover system, physics engine, better driving, better shooting, better missions, better graphics

Online Racing is awesome

Online deathmatch is awesome

Noobs play with auto aim btw

most of y'all will say GTA:SA just because it has the same formula as two games before it, that they love.

and I also loved GTA:SA, but u gotta admit there are bunch of stupid, unplayable mission, due to the bugs and sometimes controls, and bad game design. yeah, the big world serves the game well, but I liked the worlds in GTA4 and Vice City, cuz everywhere was something to look for :)

GTA IV had one of the best multiplayers modes last year.

GTA IV currently has the best critique of human society, the amount of details that went into it is enormous. From GTAIII to GTAIV, every game was a better critique of the American system and society, but this is just beautiful.

GTA IV has a better driving mechanism plus shooting is finally done right, I never liked the previous system, it was too basic, it was one of the main reasons for dying a lot.

GTA IV wins for me, they had the balls to do something different and they did it.

i liked both but for some reason SA had more replay value to me...there was always something you could do cuz the map was so big and i really liked the huge country area....

Also, i hated how your "friends" in gtaiv constantly called you that got annoying after a while. But the bank heist mission might be my favorite mission ever in a gta game

but my personal favorite actually might be Vice City

GTA4 without a question
though san andreas still might get a play here and there but only on pc

ya know, ive had gta4 for a good couple months, but the only thing i seem to play online is halo (which i dont think i'll ever stop playing) and l4d, ive even only vaguely known that gta4 has online play... lol maybe i should pop it in and give it a try one of these days

what can you do btw?
deathmatch?? kill each other?
racing?? race each other?? lol

Team Modes

Team Deathmatch
TEAM DEATHMATCH
2-8 Teams

Players work as a team to rub out other team(s) for money - and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins. There's no restrictions - do whatever it takes to rub out the competition.

PROTIP: Every little bit counts: remember to loot the cash dropped by deceased players. That's the way to get ahead.
Team Mafiya Work
TEAM MAFIYA WORK
2-8 Teams

You're a member of a crew doing contract work for the mafiya - including such plum gigs as escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins and stealing cars. Work as a team to complete contracts before the time period ends and get the rewards. You'll probably want to do your best to scupper the other crew's work as well. Each contract you complete gives your team cash, and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins.

PROTIP: Don't play nice. Sabotaging the opposing team's efforts can pay off big in the end.
Team Car Jack City
TEAM CAR JACK CITY
2-8 Teams

Cars spawn parked around the map and the teams must steal them and take them to a drop off point. The cash teams get for dropping off stolen vehicles depends on their condition - teams get less cash the more damaged they are. The exception to this are special bonus cars, stuffed with drugs, which give a set amount of cash on delivery no matter how damaged they are. Your crew has to get hold of whatever vehicles the boss wants. Whichever crew makes the most money wins. Simple.

PROTIP: If possible, send out a couple of teammates to cause trouble for the competition and mess up their vehicles. Less money for them means more success for you.
COPS N' CROOKS
2 teams only
Cops n' Crooks

A team-based mode in which the Crooks must get their Boss to safety, while the Cops have to take him down. The Boss is marked with a cross hair. This mode has two sub-modes: All for One and One for All.

1. In All for One, one team is made up of Crooks and a Boss, and the other team is made up of Cops. The Cops are trying to hunt down and kill the Boss while the Crooks are trying to protect him. The Cops win by killing the Boss and the Crooks win by getting the Boss safely to the getaway vehicle and escaping.
2. One for All is similar but there is no Boss. Here, the Cops win by killing all of the Crooks and the Crooks win by filling up a getaway vehicle with members of their team. Only 4 people can escape in the getaway vehicle. Players cannot respawn in this mode.

PROTIP: Cops will spawn in a single squad car. Bail out and nab a car each instead.
Turf War
TURF WAR
2 teams only

A timed capture-the-base mode. There are a number of bases around the map that you have to take by standing on them for a short period of time. The more players that are on a base, the faster it can be captured. The more bases that your team owns, the faster your team's cash score increases. If the rival gang is on or near a base, you won't be able to take control of it - so do what you can to try and ... displace them. The team with the most cash at the end of the round wins.

PROTIP: Expand your territory rather than nabbing random pieces of turf, and keep up your defenses at all times. Blocking access to capture points with vehicles is a worthy method.

Cooperative Modes

Deal Breaker
DEAL BREAKER
2-4 Players

Time to crash the party. You and your team will work together to bust in on a deal that's going down, take out anyone in attendance, grab the goods and wipe out the witnesses. Don't get busted, don't get killed, and walk away with a nice chunk of change.

PROTIP: Improvisation is the key to success with this mode. Don't be afraid to try new things to get the job done.
Hangman's NOOSE
HANGMAN's NOOSE
2-4 Players

Single player mission that features co-op play. Mafiya boss Petrovic has illegally flown into Francis International Airport, and someone has tipped off the cops. The objective? Escort Petrovic to safety while being pursued by the Liberty City Police Department's NOOSE (SWAT) division. You only have three respawns, so keep yourself from dying too often.

PROTIP: Get out, don't mow down. The NOOSE forces will respawn continuously and there's no way to stop them. Instead, focus on getting Petrovic (and yourself) to safety.
Bomb Da Base II
BOMB DA BASE II
2-4 Players

Bomb Da Base II tips its hat to Bomb da Base (from GTA3), one of the most outstanding Grand Theft Auto missions ever created. In Bomb da Base II, you and your cohorts will work in unison to sabotage a large cargo ship. Ample amounts of vehicle theft, police chases and gunfights are involved. Like HANGMAN's NOOSE, you can respawn up to three times before being dropped out of the mission.

PROTIP: Take cover, and use the environment to your advantage when making your way through the ship. Enemies will pop up where you least expect them.

Competitive Modes

Deathmatch
DEATHMATCH
2-16 Players

It's a complete free for all! Anything goes, and you can use any tactics you like to kill off the competition. Combat is confined to specific areas of Liberty City in order to keep the action intense.

PROTIP: Like Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch is all about who has the most money, not who has the most kills. As they say in MMO's, "Don't forget to loot the corpse!"
Mafiya Work
MAFIYA WORK
2-8 Players

Working under the direction of Kenny Petrovic via. your cellphone, you will compete against other players in a series of mini-missions. You might have to pick up recruits for the firm or take out a target, or even find and then dispose of a dozen severed heads.

PROTIP: Other players can't complete missions for Petrovic if they're dead. (Just sayin'.)
Car Jack City
CAR JACK CITY
4-16 Players

What Petrovic wants, Petrovic gets. Car Jack City pits you against everyone else in a race to nab vehicles for the all-powerful Russian Mafiya boss. The ends justify the means, so do whatever it takes to grab all the cars. Just like Team Car Jack City, the amount of money you have trumps the amount of cars you've delivered.

PROTIP: Unlike the Team version of this multiplayer mode, you can't rely on teammates roughing up the competition -- and doing it yourself is a pointless waste of time. Grab those cars and get them delivered!
Free Mode
FREE MODE
1-16 Players

Like single-player, except playing with your friends. Complete free for all. No rules, no objectives, no score. You're free to do whatever you wish. Keep in mind that Free Mode is only doable through non-ranked Player Matches.

Race Modes

RACE
1-16 Players
Race

Race to the finish through each checkpoint in order: If you take a wrong turn or mess up in some way, you can respawn your vehicle on the last checkpoint you passed. There is a large selection of races for cars, boats, and helicopters - you can choose laps and vehicle class/type. This mode has two sub-modes: Free Race and Cannonball Run.

1. Free Race are point-to-point races. First one to reach the end point wins.
2. Cannonball Run are races where you have to traverse several checkpoints any way you can.

PROTIP: In Cannonball Run, don't forget to use the GPS (Waypoint) feature on your map to help guide the way.
GTA Race
GTA RACE
1-16 Players

Similar to the orthodox Race, but with the added element of combat. Race and fight your way through the checkpoints in order and then hit the finish, but this time you can also pick up the weapons spawned en route to help take out your opponents. You can also exit the vehicle during the road races.

PROTIP: There's fun to be had even if you're a lousy driver, especially in Ranked matches. Turn the tables and try to mess up other drivers in any way you can (grabbing a bus works wonders). Take em' out, and you still walk away with some cash to add to your overall Ranked score.

San Andreas is way better than GTAIV. For me.

Now, if you forget the multiplayer and just focus on the raw gaming. You got more features than GTAIV, better environment, better atmosphere, better storyline, better missions.

The missions in GTAIV are just FUCKING STUPID. You get to shoot someone, we get it. NOthing else. And after every 2 missions, you get a call that you should hang out with someone, and that happens A LOT. You get shitload of money in one specific mission, but you don't have ANYTHING to spend it on, except guns and MOBILE PHONE RINGTONES. You don't lose all your guns when you get wasted. You don't have tanks, running away from 6 stars is fairly easy, and the storyline is predictible as fuck. Only thing I didn't expect is <SPOILER> Florian turning out a fag </SPOILER>. So you get to drive Florian (Bernie, whatever) all around town for a couple missions.

THEN YOU HANG OUT WITH ROMAN.

San Andreas has that hood feel, not that it matters anything to me, but they executed their theme properly. You can build lowriders, hydraulics, cut off tops, new rims, new everything. You can go and have a haircut, you have multiple outfits, you can tattoo. WHICH GIVES YOU AN UNLIMITED AMMOUNT OF OPTIONS. Of course my lack of creativeness, my CJ at the end had blonde cornrows, a black suit and pants, and lo-top sneaks.

You get to ride planes, tanks, bicycles. You got mobs, missions, turf wars (which are banging). You got a casino, you got all those minigames, you got races.

AND.

You have the option of riding thru the hood with a lowrider, going up and down while bumping Still D.R.E.

And you can download the multiplayer mode anytime you want.

Shizzah, wouldn't u think the missions are the most important gameplay aspect in GTA?

I can see somebody liking one over another, but the missions on GTAIV were done excellent, better than in GTA: SA. All that creating your character stuff is just bonus. I can listen to Still Dre with a bouncing car in GTA: SA too.

Plus the downloadable 'multiplayer' isn't included, isn't a part of the game and doesn't have banging modes like in IV.

So, that's why I say GTA:SA is not as good. Maybe it's more fun, if u like making GTA a Sims reject...but otherwise no.

I think the missions in SA are way more fun and original. I've beaten almost the whole GTA IV, and its way shorter, and the storyline isn't so good. I just don't find GTA IV that fun as everyone makes it.

Saints Row 2 takes a shit on both games tho.

great thread, EVERYONE CAN ARGUE NOW. i have been a GTA fan since playstations GTA 1 (yes i owned a playstation 1/2)

me and my mate were arguing this point a week or two back

* i believe the controls in gta 4 are superior no doubt - specialy the driving
* gta 4 has better AI in the streets (citizens)
* gta 4 had a better story, i realy got into this story, the others i skipped alot of the talking, i found these story shorts funny and powerful to the story
* police were harder to escape hence making a 'shoot and hide' harder when you wanted to test the police departments strength

but with san an. i found:
*better vehicals (why could'nt they put in bikes and planes ? fuckin hell dont go backwards)
*more realistic ways of making money (breaking into house after 8pm)

but thats basicly it

san an has more replay value, but all together GTA4 was great

i vote GTA 4

to bad you playstation junkies dont get new GTA missions in a few months *laughs rubbing his xbox control on his balls*

I'm not knocking your opinion. But this is wrong. Cops are just more aggressive. It's fairly easy to escape them, just take a vehicle on a train track, and drive until you get out of that wanted circle.

One more flaw in GTA IV: I sometimes found the bridges cluttered by crashed vehicles. And I was nowhere near the bridge.

no no - your right, i was mistaken with the last statement, i founf it easier to ESCAPE the police but actualy getting away from them initialy was alot harder, like you cant put yourself in a great building and hide and shoot.

but yeah getting away in a car was easy. although those stars dont go down as fast as they used to.

san andreas quite easily, its got 10x the content of IV, not to mention a bigger map, more better music, better lead character, cars are mroe fun to drive, whole game is more fun to do

IV kills it with the graphocs though

Both games have qualities that shit on the other

Its just a preference thing

While GTA IV has the amazing graphics and FAR BETTER controls, I still love SA's story, characters, and had much more fun going to San Fran, Vegas and LA.

While New York was done beautifully and was tight as hell, I still loved the more open feel on San Andreas going into the dessert, all those backwoods, etc.

Just so much more open space and more fun imo.

Plus they're bullshiting taking out planes. I kno why they did it, but you cant give someone that gift, than take it away like that

I mean I still hear people saying Vice City is still the best GTA. So its really all just in preference

anyone had a tank after you in #4 ? (5 stars it should be)

just thort, i have never seen a tank, vice city was the shit with the tanks, get the tank, put the low gravity cheat in, then when you shoot the tank flys. awesome, pure awesome.

and i had mates that played vice online with multiplayer (hacked version of the game, no pedestrians tho)

they all have their appeal no doubt, a question i have is, since liberty city was the fist in the #3 line-up, do you think they will re-do vice and san an next ? i would'nt be dissapointed.

lol @ people into customising their character ... the fuck? go play the sims

GTA4 takes a dump on SA

the graphics alone destroy it

the gameplay 100 x smoother ... the framerate is exceptionally annoying on SA after playing GTA4

the map is condensed meaning it doesn't take a week to get from one place to another - seriously, traveling to those hick towns in the middle of nowhere having to pause the game and check the map to see if i was on the right road every 5 seconds pissed me off to no end

no planes? so what? why the fuck do i want to fly a plane around a densely populated metropolis city?

alot of people just don't see how realistic GTA4 really is

san andreas was too big with alot of irrelevant shit going on

it was refreshing that they actually did something out of the ordinary otherwise we'd have had the same game just with better graphics

Vikthor
01-27-2009, 04:30 AM
damn...
its just expectations were through the roof- double the guns of SA, -airplanes (if at all jets), basically since san andreas was so goddamn great people want IT again only updated, the gtas have always been their own games, and for the record gta4 has just as much (if not more) to interact with, not as much empty space as san andreas (and yes, SA has them grassy fields and mountains but their filled with just a flat texture and maybe a random cuple bush or tree) 4 is in no way worse than SA. the constant phone calls (as annoyuing as they cfan be) still have their benefits, and at the press of a single button can be ignored.
and if online play isnt enough to win you over, the downloadable content that is coming, presumeably new cars, more guns... enough of that quantity over quality..
