Recorded between june & september 2003 and announced only one month before its release, this album seems to be the begin of a new era ; the label has changed and it's especially the first album under the name "RZA". Then, it's the first time for a Wu album that the lyrics are in the booklet, what it could be interpreted like a wish of transmission, of understand. Finally, the thanks are like a testament : he thanks Dr. Dre, Source XXL, and a strange "Sifu Shi Yam Ming" for "revealing the matrial practice to my mental principles"... (there's "the cure coming soon" too lol)
At the beginning of the album, you know what's the deal.

A soul voice give a good energy, the birth of the prince will be related. But it's not now, because RZA doesn't killed his alter-ego Bobby, who come here to put fire on "Bob n'I", produced by Josť "choco" Reynoso (the well known yeaaah).
Two tracks are dispensable : "Fast Cars" & "Drink Smoke & Fuck", where Ghostface is not as his best... RZA experiments westcoast sound on "We pop" with ODB. Song is good, but it's not the good CD for it. You can feel a Timbaland influence on "You'll Never know", which is a real hip hop song. There's some surprises like a Sega sound on "The Drop Off", where a girl is screaming of pleasure.... He jumps on each words, this is a fucking great technic !!

The streets are here too : tire screeching, helico, subway, klaxons, cop sirens, uzis....
Chi Kung & Koto Chotan are the two tracks that are directly inspired from martial arts. Thats the biggest successes of the album

The album is very bewitching (yeah i don't know if that word exists but i'm french lol) and the top is reached on "A day to God is 1.000 years", produced by the great Bronze Nazareth "I wanna stay with you forever..." Here, the lyrics are the best since "Sunshower" or "Twelve Jewelz" ; the conclusion : "Trust me, son, itís dear in between your ears, a day to God is a thousand years. Men walk around with a thousand fears. The truest joy of love bring a thousand tears. In the world of desire thereís a thousand snares"... RZA succeed in forgetting of Bobby Digital, and the album is closed on two songs which are far above the most actuals rap songs : "The Birth" and "See The Joy".

AND THERE IS THE VERSE : "Donít call me Bobby no more, man. My name is Prince Rakeem". yeaaaaaah that's what we want a new RZA album, not a Digital one.

Good album for me but not his best. The Bobby Digital's I really felt more than this. But anything Rza do is better than most. Love "We Pop" "Dropoff" really dope songs. Its a good album just missing that little something that the bobby digitals had.

Average album ... which is the worst thing that could happen to a RZA album ... I would have even prefered an horrible album cause then you can say the guy try to experiment something and that maybe it will grow on you ... disappointing .

Some tracks are good though :
The trumpets in fast cars are like those in 7th chamber pt2, I like this track (4/5)

Grits was a good surprise but is pretty boring after more than 20 listenings (3/5)

Bob nį1 : Pretty average track, RZA's flow on it isn't very good (2,5/5)

We pop: I was upset the first time I heard it : shit !!! its not a nightmare ? it's really Rza ??? but now I changed my position and find that track entertaining (but shouldn't had been on a Rza album) (3/5)

Chi Kung : My favorite track in the album ... aaah finally some experimental asian shit !!! that's RZA !!!! (5/5)

You'll never know: Another average track (2,5/5)

Dring, Smoke ans F*ck : No comment (1/5)

The wistle: yea not that bad I hate the chorus (2,5/5)

The Drop verse: Good RZA verse (+ good beat) but I don't like the chorus too (3/5)

Wherever I go: I like this track, kind of alleviating shit (4/5)

Koto Chotan: I really don't understand the success of this track ! I hate the beat and the flow (1,5/5)

A day ..... : Same here, ok the lyrics are 5/5 but I don't feel the production ... too sweet ... wake up ! it's a wu-album !!! (3,5/5)

Cherry range: a little better than average so 3/5

The Birth: I love the intro of this track ... shit ! after that you can expect some classic material and you only get something decent (3,5/5)

See The joy: First time I listened to that track I was "Ohhh shit !!!" that's dope !!!! after 10 listenings I was turning off the CD player before the track was starting . (5/5 the first time 2/5 after)

Cd was hot, but not classic. Some tracks are just lazy. 7/10.
Loads of respect for Origin, True Masta, Kenetic and Bronze Nazareth for bringin the ruckus on this RZA cd!

Birth of A Prince is different from the previous Bobby Digital efforts. For one, RZA doesn't do almost all of the production. Two, there aren't wu guest appearances as plentiful as with the first one. And three, the "RZA" actually becomes himself with the last 4 or 5 songs.

Bob N' I-4/5-So first listen your expecting a different type of sound. A more eerie sound. But here comes Bobby Digital with a Digital-esque beat. It's obviously a freestyle. But I really like this song, it's real catchy.

The Grunge-4/5-I love the beat it's classic RZA. I also love Digi on this song, but "sizzay" type wordplay aint that fly. It's a banging track for how short it is.

We Pop-1/5-Obviously this is an attempt at the mainstream. This song is really bad. For a mainstream song, even this is bad. The guest verses are absolutely horrible and Digital doesn't make me happy on this song. And a really bad chorus. Note to any rapper, dont say money or jersey at the end of a line for 5 lines in a row. I like the hidden freestyle at the end though.

Grits-4/5-Phew now that song is done. I like the beat. It's a simple little guitar but it's effective. This sounds more like a RZA song. He drops a nice verse about growing up and once again Masta Killa proves he's the best clan member of the last 3 or 4 years.

Fast Cars-5/5-What a beat by Trumaster. A banging beat with once again the Digital persona dropping a verse. He drops a good verse. Ghost comes in and drops about a C- verse. He's capable of a lot more.

Chi Kung-5/5-One of the best songs on the album. This sounds like RZA to me although it's supposed to be Digital. Well, "Digital," drops dope verses but I love the beat. I was surprised to see it wasn't RZA produced, as it sounds a lot like one RZA would do. "you go against the grain you will hang from your tongue."

You'll Never Know-4/5-A good beat. Bobby Digital brings the heat on this song as well, dropping the best verses. Don't really like the guest appearance of which I can't remember at this point.

Drink, Smoke, Fuck-3/5-This is another mainstream type song, except done well. It's a catchy song and the beat is so so. It's a song about drinking, smoking, and fucking so it's not gonna be great but it's an alright song.

The Whistle-5/5-Dope beat by RZA. Drops a so so verse for Bobby Digital. The best verse is easily Masta Killa, who has dropped 2 great verses on this album thus far.

The Drop Off-2/5-I don't really feel the beat too much plus the chorus is a pain in the ass. I like Digi's verse and the woman orgasm sounda hee hee. But once again the guest verses have been relatively poor besides Masta Killa.

Wherever I go I-3/5- A good song. Good beat and good verse by Digital. But once again, very average guest verses.

Koto Chotan-4/5-Dope beat by RZA. This is the turning point of the album as he turns into the "Prince Rakeem" persona. "You fucking fake, 85 percent snake, daralake bitch whose class is dead weight." That's a dope line. He sounds mad on this song.

A Day to God Is 1,000 Years-5/5-Probably the best beat of the album and possibly Nazareths best work. Perfect guitar and flute with right amount of bass. Doesn't get much better than that. But then on the other hand RZA drops knowledge and his flow has obviously changed from previous tracks. This is a classic RZA track right here.

Cherry Range-3/5- Bah the beat is bad! Damn I thought RZA would bring heat with this song but the beat is pretty bad. RZA's verses aren't that great but ok. Skippable track.

The Birth-5/5-Another masterful beat by Nazareth. Dont call him Bobby anymore, his name is prince rakeem. RZA drops the most knowledge of the album on this track. It's a masterpiece and probably the best or 2nd best on the album.

See The Joy-4/5-I really do like the beat, it's unlike anything RZA has done and is once again, experimenting his style. Very well done on the production side but very rarely am I disappointed in RZA when he raps, but he doesn't come off that great. This is still a very good song though.

71/90

It's a good album to me but I am a bigger Digital fan than a lot of people on here it would seem. The previous 2 efforts were better to me though.

Dope album by RZA. The last half of the album is just straight bangers left and right. The production is dope, and the lyrics is dope. No weaknesses from what I can find except a couple medicore tracks.

I just think it's lyrically on some whole crazy truth as a metaphor level. The production is pretty dope too but yeah, lyrically, it's bigger than genius I'd say.

This album disappointed me. It lacked the replayability of RZA's earlier albums, but when I first heard it I LOVED it. These days I still listen to about half the joints regularly, but RZA's production was at times uninspired and I think he should have taken more time to make this album.. and less outside producers. Like it or not, RZA is defined by his production. I don't want guys trying to sound like RZA or how experimental they sound, because in the end they can't really complement RZA like he can himself.

I remembered when it first came out...it was in such short notice too...Rza coming out with an album is a must have. "Birth of a Prince" is a great album!!! It was the transformation of Bobby D to Prince Rakeem. Joints that stand out is "Fast Cars"..."A day to God is a 1000 years"...."The birth"....classic Rza.."Koto Chotan"....and "Chi Kung"....the flow and the beat to that joint is sooo dope and hypnotic LOL!! Now "Return of the Prince" looms over the horizon.

i think this album is great. chi kung is the hottest and something about the drums and guitar riff in koto chotan make it one of my favorites. i would however, like to have seen more official wu cameos.

on my RZA solo scale, this album ties up with digi in stereo, then comes digi bullet....

1 Bob N'I 3/5... nice old school shoutout i guess...
2 The Grunge 4/5... lyrically not brilliant, but the beat more than makes up for it...
3 We Pop 1/5... just don't like it much...
4 Grits ft. Masta Killa 4/5... the beat is a little repetitive... otherwise awesome...
5 Fast Cars ft. Ghostface Killah 4.5/5... love the beat...
6 Chi Kung 4/5... i like the beat and rza's delivery... the hook catches some flack, but to me it fits...
7 You'll Never Know ft. Cilvaringz 3.5... the beat is a little too repetitive... i love the drums though... the verses are pretty good i guess...
8 Drink, Smoke & Fuck 3/5... hate the concept and the chorus of this song... a shame, because the beat and the verses don't sound that bad...
9 The Whistle ft. Prodigal Sunn & Masta Killa 4.5/5... loses 0.5 for the chorus... since it's called the whistle, the hook should have just been the whistle, it would have been perfect...
10 Drop Off ft. Division 2/5... the verses are the only saving graces...
11 Wherever I go ft. Division 4/5... don't mind this at all... nice beat to nod your head to...
12 Koto Chotan ft. Masta Killa 4.5/5... love the beat and masta killah is in the form of his life here... the chick at the end cops flack, but she only sounds inferior because of how good the mk verse before hers is...
13 A Day To God is a 1000 Years 4.5/5... i like this a lot... the beat is unbelievable...
14 Cherry Range ft. Beretta 9 2/5... can't get past the beat... it's just crap...
15 The Birth 5/5... awesome beat and i love the way rza changes his delivery for the second verse...
16 See The Joy 3.5/5... interesting beat... but it's a stupid way to finish an album...

what is going on here, people who said this was weak are on point but i can't believe how many people said it was a hot album, not to mention those who rated it as their best rza album.

it is far from good, in fact it is for certain the worst wu album i have. some alright tracks but it is mostly weak:

Bob n I-6/10- annoying, overly bassy beat with some bullshit "N" coming every beat. has a replay value of about 1/10. RZA aint bad lyrically on this but the beat is just too bad.

The Grunge-6/10- another annoying beat, was ok then first time i heard it but RZA is just sort of slurring words and talking shit.

We Pop-4/10-What was RZA thinking-this beat sounds like it came out of a jakwon album or some shit, i dont know what the objective with this one was but it just doesnt fit with RZA's style.

Grits-7/10- Not an all together bad track, liked it the first time i heard it. but again the beat isnt great, pretty much ruins the whole song in the end. also a really weak song to listen to more then once

Fast Cars-5/10-Much like we pop, just soo far out of left field. since when does RZA do this. RZA is average on the mic but it isnt as if it wouldnt have really mattered.

Chi Kung-6/10- Not such a bad track, the beat is relaxed and sounds recent, RZA really lets it down with the rhymes-just kind of meaningless shit. no replay value.

You'll Never Know-8/10-Best song on the album, decent beat some decent verses. overall a pretty solid joint.

Drink, Smoke and Fuck-5/10-same shit as we pop and fast cars-just basic gangster shit which RZA doesnt do so well, the beat could have been alot better and the hook "all we wanna do is drink, smoke and fuck" sounds almost fake.

Thw Whistle-8/10- Finally something on the album that sounds like real RZA style. the beat is hot and RZA is decent on the mic. i guess some people may say the beat is annoying but it sounds good, shame about the hook.

The Drop-6/10- Not such a bad beat but a serious collection of poor verses which drag this song into the doldrums. what is going on with the fake gangsta hooks, just doesnt sounds right.

Wherever I go-6/10- Beat is ok but pretty annoying and average, verses are nothing special.

Koto Gotan-7/10- Dig the beat on this, sounds cool with the drums and the instrument in the back. verses aint great.

A Day To God IS 1000 Years-6/10-average beat, verse is average. nothing standout, just sort of a nothing track.

Cherry Range-5/10- this beat made is so cheesey. RZA is lazy on the mic.

The Birth-5/10-RZA's lyrics aint bad but the flow aint shit, the beat is weak.

See The Joy-5/10-fark, all these dick riders saying how this is some conceptual master piece, track is weak. rza is soo lazy on it, the beat is slow and annoying. if you wont the exact same song but 10 times better get NaS-fetus off lost tapes. he does a great job, rza is way off.

overall the album is a few good in bits and weak in bits. just average. beats are genarally poor and RZA is not on point with rhymes. i very over rated album which should be more critically looked at.

This album was so hyped up on this site when it first came out. You guys were comparing it to Supreme Clientle LOL. I wasn't impressed with a lot of the beats and RZA could've picked better guests. It's not bad but not the followup to the classic Digital Bullet that I had hoped for.

I personally love this album. It doesnt have a Wu sound, but there are awesome beats on this album. The Grunge is sick, Grits is a tight track, Chi Kung, The Whistle, and You'll Never Know are great tracks to vibe to. Then, the album gets serious. Koto Chotan has a sick beat. A Day to God is 1,000 Years is basically one of the best songs of any wu member. The Birth and See The Joy are solid as well. Sorry to all the Wu fans that only like Cuban Linx, Ironman, Tical, Liquid Swords and 36 Chambers.

I think the second half of the album is very strong. There are some VERY weak parts on the first have, like the first track, parts of we pop, and drink smoke and fuck. The concept for see the joy is not all that great, but the beat is great. Along with Chi Kung, Koto Chotan is awesome. the best track is day to god is 1,000 years, by far.

Yeah, i loved it originally when it first dropped but i honestly haven't listened to it in like 2-3 years now. I have to pop in alot of the later Wu albums again and give them another listen because i've grown on so many levels since alot of albums came out. Eventhough this isn't even that old my musical tastes and knowledge have took different turns so i gotta re-listen to this now and than leave my thoughts but at first i loved it.

i vote "mediocre." some of the wackest RZA shit ever put on record here. hooks are awful. the first 10 songs are non-stop bobby digital ramblings and then he even has the nerve to say later "don't call me bobby digital!" some might argue the album is supposed to show the transformation from Digital to Prince rakeem, but if that's the case, why waste over half an album of bobby digital? if he wanted to show that transformation he shoulda just made an album with NO bob digi.

that's what he marketed this as, the first album as "RZA" but it's a straight bob digi album that ends with four attempts at serious lyrics (ie weak metaphors).

a couple good songs keep this from being a completely wack album, such as grits, the opening track, and uh one or two others. i like masta on this LP more than RZA

i voted banger, even tho most shit is whack, some of the tracks on here are too good to hate on:
Bob N' I
Chi-Kung
Koto Chotan
The Whistle
The Birth
Grits
You'll Never Know ( RZA verses are sick )
Wherever I Go ( is ok )
the rest of the songs REALLY suck tho...

i only jus picked up this album a couple weeks ago haha got it for £3 so cant complain

good tracks: grits ( i love this track best on the album in my opinion)
chi kung (on som chinese type beat its pretty good)
wherever i go ( i jus generally like the beat is cool. and rza reveals he no longer bobby)
koto chotan ( i love the beat ansd the lyrics are alright too, not bad)
cherry range
see the joy (i just like the concept to the song its good)

not so good tracks:
drink smoke and fuik (its just shit really)
the whistle (the hook makes me want to die)
drop off (once again just ebcause the hook . i think shit hooks just fuk the whole song up)
a day to god is 1000 years ( i seriously hate the beat dont get me wrong the lyrics are good but thsat ebat jus kills it for me)
the birth (its just too slow and boring)

the problem with this album is the good tracks arnt really that amazing there good but just nothing that special. which is a shame because it really needed som good tracks to help you ignore some of the really bad tracks and the big amount of average tracks.

if you see it cheap then yeh its worth buying (or if you a collector its def worth getting too. or you prob got it ages ago haha im abit late) but if you tight with your money when buying cds then avoid this

dear god what is wrong with you people? did ya even give it a chance?

heres my review feel free to trash it, keep in mind that i rate harsher than most, i dont give a 5 arbitrarally

1. Bob n I 4* The intro song says it all.... its a changing of the guard , then starts with a break beat! i thot of words from the genius on this one good memories. Sha NA NA!!!!

2.the grunge 3* too short or else a 4 "butta pec(an) make my nut all weak"

3. We pop 3* as far as i can tell this is the last bobby song besides drink smoke fcuk which i didnt like that much either. weird popish beat

4 Grits 4* great visualisation here like a ghost or gza story, never was a strongpoint for rza but really is here close to classic status, but has a poor replay value

5 Fast cars 4* Decent hook good vocals good beat "I got 2 hands but im known to carry three glocks" "sing a sick silky six syllable stanza...."

6 Chi Kung 5* this is what wu tang is all about its the original style, whats the problem here? kung fu beat quotables gallore "5 poisons from the clan theres no remedy we dispell the smell of wickedness in our vicinity" "XO hennesy jack daniel tennessee whiskey got these groupie bitches actin frisky"

7 Youll never know 4* enuff of the fam just rep RZA, RZA "i shud stick a long silver hook down ya throat and snatch out ya vocals bitch my eyes is black opal reflecting this 2.2 kilogram mack that smoke you" "and i love u like the pharoh love joseph the jews love moses like a man bending down on 1 knee before he proposes..."

8 drink smoke fcuk 2* i hope bobby dies with this 1. mindless

9 the whistle 3* nothing outstanding the beat can give ya a headache if u listen too much

10 the drop off 4* once again leave the fam at home and rep Rza. his verse is so sick "I got many whips many clips many chicks and my dick been sucked by many lips..." banga

11wherever i go 3* lackluster track best verse once again by rza

12 Koto Chotan 4*same formula as chi kung effective as hell "babes in wonderland wonderin where'n the fuck alice is, while u jerkin your dick catchin mad callouses.." pretty much sums up all the haters of this album

13 A Day to god is 1000 years 5* classic verses classic beat (sampled from a late 70s early 80s tv show not sure which, remember it from when i was a kid) most people cant understand this song because it is just way too profound, but dont worry u may some day. this is knowledge. rips it right out of the gate with "The a1 sauce of divine force...."WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!

14 cherry range 2* ugh beat coulda left this off

15 the birth 4* this is a heavy heavy song the lyrics are eye openers and if the beat was better id give it a 5 "we the people were supposed to be equal, but the men who wrote that they was evil..."

16 the joy 2* tries to be cleaver like gza or ghosts underwater but fails miserably this is forgettable too

ok so if i add it up 56 divided by 16 songs=3.5 exactly between above average and great

my other reviews so far
the w 3.5
iron flag 3.6

now go ahead tear me apart

wackness

1 Bob N'I ---------- 7/10 - alright, i guess. at least rza doesnt sound like a retard
2 The Grunge --------3/10 - reminds of "the chase". which is not good. rza sounds like a retard. would have made a good instrumental
3 We Pop ------------0/10 - horrific
4 Grits ft. Masta Killa ---------7/10 - rhymes aren't great from either but a nice song
5 Fast Cars ft. Ghostface Killah---------5/10 - beat is repetitive and lumbering. rza sounds like a retard. even ghost cant save it
6 Chi Kung ---------------5/10 nice beat. horrible hook. rza sounds like a retard. guest appearance (cilvaringz?) is boring. would have made a good instrumental
7 You'll Never Know ft. Cilvaringz----------4/10 by-the-numbers rza beat. weak cilvaringz verse. rza sounds like a retard. would have made a good instrumental
8 Drink, Smoke & Fuck -----------------3/10 - horrible "in stereo" style beat. rza sounds like a retard
9 The Whistle ft. Prodigal Sunn & Masta Killa-----------6/10 nice beat. horrible hook. rza sounds like a retard. shouldve just made this a prodigal & masta joint
10 Drop Off ft. Division ---------------- 3/10 - weak beat. rza sounds like a retard. wackalicious guest appearance from some no-name dudes
11 Wherever I go ft. Division -----------4/10 - boring beat. rza actually doesn't sound that retarded here but there is a wackalicious guest appearance from some no-name dudes (one of whom really needs to give jay-z his style back)
12 Koto Chotan ft. Masta Killa--------------6/10 - beat is a bit clumsy but i guess it works. rza only sounds mildly retarded here at least. masta is real nice, but whoever that chick is is really horrible
13 A Day To God is a 1000 Years --------5/10 mindless muddled rambling. shoudlnt even be mentioned in the same sentence as sunshower. beat is ok.
14 Cherry Range ft. Beretta 9--------2/10 beat sounds like a digitized fart. wack hook. rza sounds like a retard. beretta 9 is as boring as ever
15 The Birth------- 6/10 very nice beat but rza still sounds kinda retarded even if his lyrics are good here at least
16 See The Joy -----3/10 a very half-assed concept song with a boring beat. rza sounds like a retard
All I see over and over is "RZA sounds like a retard." FOR THE WHOLE ALBUM? God damn, maybe this isn't your style then LOL. I guess I don't really know what kinda treasure you were looking for out of this album but I thought this shit had a nice Wu sound to it.

I am not going to play with the RZA. RZA, I really didn't like Birth of A Prince, you was not RZA on this album and I could tell because the only song that I really liked on this album was "Fast Cars". The chorus was original and your flows were flawless. The rest of the album, I felt that your stomach got too fat and you weren't hungry anymore. It appeared that you made this album real quick and if you did, then that explains why I really didn't like the album. Don't get me wrong, you are still my favorite Mc and producer, I just felt that you made this album lazily and as you fan, you should know that. Put Bobby Digital on hold and bring RZA back, I need Truth, Justice, Equality, and shooting a few mothafuckers in my life. Please come back!

I just finished listening to this (it's been collecting dust for about a year until now) and I gotta say that I put this higher than "Digital Bullet".
The concept of the album is brilliant although he doesn't really pull it off as someone above said and there are a couple tracks that totally sounds out of place on here. Both "We Pop" and "Drink, Smoke, Fuck" would have been decent joints on a soundtrack but filling in between cuts like "Grits" and "You'll Never Know" they just fuck up the flow of the album.
I love how some of the production breathes old-school Wu-Tang like "Chi Kung", "Fast Cars" (which sounds a bit like "Daytona 500") and "The Grunge". Lyrically it's about 50/50 - RZA can be brilliant ("Fast Cars", "You'll Never Know") or he can be straight-up weak ("The Grunge"). And letting CCF Division spit on 3 tracks ain't exactly a good thing although apperances by Masta Killa, Prodigal Sunn and Ghostface Killah are more than welcome [since RZA can't hold up an entire album lyrically himself].

01 - Bob N'I (3.5/5)
02 - The Grunge (3.5/5)
03 - We Pop (2/5)
04 - Grits (4.5/5)
05 - Fast Cars (5/5)
06 - Chi Kung (4.5/5)
07 - You'll Never Know (4.5/5)
08 - Drink Smoke Fuck (2/5)
09 - The Whistle (4/5)
10 - The Drop Off (3/5)
11 - Wherever I Go (3.5/5)
12 - Koto Chotan (4/5)
13 - A Day To God.. (4.5/5)
14 - Cherry Range (3.5/5)
15 - The Birth (5/5)
16 - See The Joy (4/5)

Tracks i feel:

Grits (great guitar, great lyrics, great feel to it)
Chi Kung (awesome beat, Bobby kills it, terrible chorus but hot track)
Koto Chotan (got a nice Wu Tang feel to it, hot drums)
A Day To God Is 1000 Years (this is the RZA i want to hear!)
The Birth (the best track on the album, Bronze kills the beat, RZA is great)
See The Joy (great, if unoriginal concept, nice sample)

Tracks i don't mind:

Bob 'N' I (its a nice intro but pointless)
Fast Cars (they waste a pretty good beat)
You'll Never Know (guitar sounds sick but too repetitive)
Wherever I Go (had a lot of potential but goes nowhere)

Tracks i can't stand:

The Grunge (Bobby is terrible, beat is unlistenable)
We Pop (commercial crap, Freemurda = feces)
Drink, Smoke + Fcuk (wack, the worst of Bobby)
The Whistle (boring, uninspired beat, Masta Killa's verse is FIRE though)
The Drop Off (just a nothing track, filler, boring)
Cherry Range (awful beat, boring lyrics, in between two amazing tracks)

Overall, it's better than Digital Bullet

its sad when someone other than rza produces the two dopest beats, but I still think its a strong album

i'm finally gonna tackle this one...

this is Part 3.0 of the Bob Digi Saga/Digital Odyssey where i'm reviewing all the Rza albums and just basically waxing on the merits and demerits of the diversion into Digi-ness...the other parts can be found here (http://www.wutang-corp.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1023174&postcount=111) and here (http://www.wutang-corp.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1030437#post1030437)

i'll try to keep this one shorter and it's an album that's alot less interesting than the previous ones so i'll probably succeed...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0c/Birthofaprince.jpg
the album cover is awesome..certainly a different approach than the Digital albums and we're now given what seems like a strictly "RZA" album as shown on the front...but what u see is definitely not what u get, the pose he's in implies that we're getting some deep journey into the great mind of the Abbott but instead it's really a thrown-together jumble of flashes of brilliance and an abundance of BULL SHIT...

i don't mean to set a negative tone for the review but this is really a huge fall from his previous LPs which were a classic and solid-banger, respectively...

with this album i feel like he really didn't put too much time (if any) into the actual putting together of the tracklist and mixture of songs, it's almost like he reached a point where he said "i've got a bunch of joints..some good, some whack but enough to fill up a disc..Let's make some cash!"...As the guy in the first post said, it was announced only about a month before it was released and I figure he couldn't devote too much time to this album while doing all the work he did for Kill Bill...

but it's bright spots are very bright, and it also does feature the Wu debut of the almighty Bronze Nazareth..

1. Bob N' I
(prod by Choco)
i love the opening to this album, it's absolutely beautiful..the sample was so hard to find for years and then it finally popped up on here (http://www.wutang-corp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6066&highlight=sample&page=174)
the Intro sorta perfectly sums up the entire album cuz for me it feels like Rza is just confused and all over the place on this LP; he's got some beautiful shit but he can't stop throwing in the bullshit...
it's funky and fun but i really don't care for the song on here, the be-bop shit...and above all, it's a huge drop-off from the deep smoothness of the opening sample..
(altho i will say the end is kinda funny how his voice repeats like crazy)
3/5

2. The Grunge
a pretty nice beat for a Digital album, repetitive as fuck but still cool... i gotta say tho: i really don't feel the lyrics on this joint at all...just way too simple-minded and bullshitty, no originality like he had all over the previous Digital albums...this is where he's pretty much turned Bobby Digital completely into a gimmick..this ain't Unspoken Word no more
3/5

3. We Pop ft Division
(prod. by Megahertz)
}:|
straight up whackness...

the beat is fuckin horrible, one of the worst beats to ever appear on a Wu-related album probably..
and Division is just.....i'm speechless
0/5

extra track at the end "Hood Rats":
a NICE sample bumped mad funky and fast and Bobby flows great over it....i have no idea who Erica Bryant is but she spits 3 or 4 nice bars..
doesn't really deserve a rating cuz it's like 45 seconds long..

4. Grits ft Allah Real and Masta Killa
I know this a joint that can be appreciated and bumped by not just the Wu fans cuz it surpasses the Wu borders and most music fans would probably enjoy the simple, melodic guitar beat and the smooth singing...
i'm not that big a fan of this song tho..
Rza is ok on it and Masta Killa is actually great on it but then the singing just goes on for a while and the beat plays by itself for long enough that i get annoyed by it.....i know plenty of ppl will disagree with me but i give it only a:
2.5/5

5. Fast Cars ft Ghostface
(prod by True Master)
BANGER...True Mizza-Master on the triz-nack with a sick beat, playing that rusty piano with all kinds of other sounds poppin off in the background..
what pisses me off is that he could've made an entire album with tracks sounding as nice as this one and the Bronze joints but instead this album is an uncomfortable-to-listen-through mish-mash of greatness and absolute bullshit..
again this beat is just terrific, i love the tempo of it and Rza spits nicely on it ending by declaring his zodiac sign (the same as mine): Cancer..
and then Ghost makes a DOPE appearance...it's just a great song all around, even the chorus is cool...
5/5

6. Chi Kung ft Beretta 9
(produced by Barracuda)
a very nice Oriental-sounding beat with Rza spittin out nice darts using a scratchy voice..

"i dropped outta school, i went to the
College of Self and i pertained my wealth"

the chorus is kinda stupid but doesn't really ruin the song and B9 spits a very ill verse...he really improved himself since he first came in with Killarmy as a teenager
and again, the beat is nice, it's the cat Origin who appeared on a few of the Ten Tigers of Kwantung tracks with Moongod and Cilva...
dope track overall
4/5

7. You'll Never Know ft Cilvaringz
i always fuckin loved this joint...the drums on this track are so perfect and even tho i was MAD disappointed when i first heard the album and saw that Rza had to change the sample from the original one which had the Beatles sample, the beat still rings nicely and absolutely BAAAANGS in the whip with a nice system...
(i remember visiting my friend at UNC last year and i'm in his car with him driving around this quaint college town in Chapel Hill and all of the sudden this song comes on he rolls all the windows down and just blasts this....i was high outta my mind and loving it)
this is, IMO, Rza's best lyrical output on the entire album..his lyrics are ferocious and he spits hard and hungry (and a cousin Billy reference!!)...
and i especially love the last line of his 2nd verse that he added in for the newly-reformed version of this track...

"And i love you like the Pharaoh loved Joseph, the Jew loved Moses
like a man bendin down on one knee before he proposes.
Express the faith of Abraham about to slay Isaac,
and the patience of Daniel in the lion's den with close eye lids...."

how he can have a lyric as nice as that and then a song like the one following this one on the tracklist is mind-boggling...and the reason why this is such a frustrating and poorly-constructed album

Cilva keeps it up very well i must say but before i knew who it was that was rapping i was always perplexed by the line: "I never smoke blunts, tote weight nor bust shots--but fuck with me i guarantee u get your neck chopped"....it just came across as gay to me...
4.5/5

8."Drink, Smoke + Fuck"
good lord...it's funny cuz the album booklet doesn't even bother including the lyrics to this song because this it is just a terrible song...
this is the kinda song that u can only appreciate at a time when you're extremely drunk and you have the album playing over n over in the background somewhere n this song comes on and you're just like "WTF was he thinking?" and laugh about it...
1/5

9. The Whistle ft Masta Killa and Prodigal Sunn
I went to a San Diego Padres game almost 2 years ago with my brother and when Khalil Greene came up this beat came on and i was like "holy shit....wait is this--" and then i heard the "digital digital" and was immediately a big fan of Greene...
it's the first i ever heard any athlete use any Wu song as their theme...(i remember making a thread about it way back then but i don't feel like diggin it up)
anyways, i like this song alot..the sample is dope. Rza really picked alotta nice samples for this album, i would guess it's cuz it was made around the same time he was doing the music for the Kill Bill movies so he was digging all in the crates constantly and finding these dope records...

Prodigal Sunn murders this song..he's always been mad underrated but he comes correct on just about every verse and always with an ill flow
4/5

10. The Drop Off ft Division
again, i dono how the hell he can intermingle songs like this one with the likes of Day to God is 1000 Years and Fast Cars...this song is HORRIBLE, no matter what kinda rap you like..
1/5

11. Wherever I Go ft Allah Real and Division
again.....
the beat is pretty damn simple and WEAK and (yay!) more Division!! Free Murda needs to get a city job or somethin...he's should be a garbage man, he does not belong on a mic
Rza does spit kinda nice and like he gives a shit but the song would make u believe otherwise...
1/5

extra thingy:
i guess this is why so many ppl talk about how BOAP was supposed to be where Rza breaks away from the Bobby Digital character and starts to go back to the wisdom and shit...
but this skit is whack...the acting is horrible and i don't get what he's trying to get to cuz this album has stupidity all over it (and the gimmicky version Bob Digi is alive and well and about to release another album)
we'll hear more from these two characters again later..

12. Koto Chotan ft Masta Killa and Tash Mahogany
i like the beat alot, it's spun very well and Rza and Masta Killa both flow dope over it...
the girl on it is straight whack though...she sounds mad nervous and she just don't belong spittin on a nice song like this but why care? By this time we've already heard Division take over 3 (!!!) tracks...
3/5

13. A Day to God is 1,000 Years
(prod by BRONZE NAZARETH)
here it is....the commercial debut of the precocious young Wu beatsmith..
there was an appreciation thread for this song where i wrote a huge post so i'll quote that instead of saying more of the same:

from the first time i heard this joint, i was just blown away. It was the best Rza song i had heard in ages and IMO it was definitely the absolute best song on the entire BOAP album..

like dude in quote below me said, i had thought it was a Rza beat for so long and, with that in mind, i felt Rza still had it in him to make those deeply beautiful beats...matter of fact i felt like he had even gotten BETTER as a producer after hearing this beat..

but this song was actually my own introduction to Bronze cuz when i first noticed in the booklet (after probably like 6 months to a year of thinking it was Rza) that it's credited to "Bronze Nazareth" i had to just 9:|6 to this until-then-unknown brother for this incredible piece of production--as well as The Birth's amazing beat..

def one of my favourite rza tracks, beat is crazy, was disapointed when i heard he didnt produce it himselfyou said that "It is heavily sampled by Bronze, but it's a good find, and was done well. " well i agree that it was heavily sampled and i also feel like sometimes producers can OVER-sample on a beat or just over-do the beat...but this beat to me is the absolute pinnacle of making a hip hop beat with a sample, THIS is what it's supposed to sound like....i can play this beat for anyone, no matter what kinda music they like, and it will touch them, it'll strike u in the heart at some point (for me it was in the part between the 2 verses)...

in interviews Bronze has said (and Kevlaar said this too) that their music is all about feeling, trying to evoke a feeling of some sort from the listener...this beat and also The Birth do that to the highest degree. I've seen ppl often times on this site condemn the soul-sampling technique for making beats--i personally love it...aside from that, if u can do it RIGHT and strike the correct notes then it comes out sounding beautiful just like this..and i've come to realize that Bronze Nazareth is an absolute master at doing this, recognizing that short little cut from a soul song that, when chopped correctly and melodically repeated in a hip hop beat, can strike a chord within the listener and make his brain tingle and heart bubble.....and i still am of the opinion that this beat is the best i've ever heard from Bronze...and i'm dying to hear more like it..

now, with all of that said, the lyrics.......
you might call me crazy (or maybe way too into Bronze) but after many listens to this song, i've come to feel that Rza didn't do justice to it...the beat totally outshines the verses..

hear me out here because i'm one of the biggest Rza fans in this place...

aside from a bunch of nice-sounding lines and a couple well-delivered metaphors, the lyrics were weak...it sounded like Rza was really TRYING to spit some wisdom as opposed to when he was in the Gravedigga years and he can just vomit out some shit that would be deeper than you could even realize...

i think after hearing the song literally hundreds of times you'll realize what i'm saying.....he sounds good on it at first but it's not a song for him (lyrically) that remains dope after a while...because so much of what he's saying is empty cliches and bullshit (and this is coming from someone whose third eye was opened by Rza's lyrics) (http://www.wutang-corp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52827)

AND, keeping in mind still that i'm a huge Rza fan and have been inspired by alotta the brothers words, this part is perhaps the dumbest bullshit "wisdom" i've ever heard:

"you been given the chance to hear the true and livin
so do the knowledge son, before you do the wisdom
So you can understand,
how the thunder and lighting,
above your head is caused by the son of man
We experimented with high explosives, that caused the place to quake and the surface erosions"

unless he's got a meaning behind that that's way over my head, it's retarded....thunder, lightning and surface erosion was caused by man???? what about the 4+ billion years of the earth's history before man came, i guess there wasn't any of those things goin on??

that's retarded...

i'm not trying to hate on the whole verse or the first verse...it ain't bad at all and it's light-years ahead of your average hip hop but it just ain't quite as dope as Rza can be capable of and it's not even close to matching the quality of the beat he's spitting over...

that was long...but i hope i made my point
the rating would be a 5/5 regardless of how i feel about the lyrics
onward....

14. Cherry Range ft Beretta 9
after that near-masterpiece of a track we get that bitter taste of whackness again..
the back-n-forth between Rza and B9 is pretty good but the beat is just unbearable and then to close out the song we're left with about a minute of the chorus being repeated constantly...this song doesn't belong anywhere near a Wu-Tang affiliated album and especially shouldn't have been stuck in between the 2 probably best (certainly most musically pleasing) songs on the entire album..
1.5/5

15. The Birth
(prod. by BRONZE NAZARETH)
my feelings on this song are very similar to how i feel about Day to God...the beat just totally outshines the lyrics, and i say that as someone who considers The Rza as one of my top 5 all-time favorite emcees..
but this beat is just so beautiful and deep that Rza would've had to come with some of his best work ever, lyrically, to keep up with it..
i flat out dislike the first verse, i don't like listening to it...he's flowing way too slow and his mixing together of the sadness of slavery with the stuff about the 6 Million Dollar Man just comes across as stupid..
i like the 2nd verse alot better, he gets much more into it and starts to dive into descriptions that are sometimes purely mystical and are much more poetically presented..."ignite to the speed of light, cause time to stand still"

either way i still felt like he almost ruins a song with an amazing beat....the Rza verse from The Night the Earth Cried is what we needed to have on a beat this powerful but, if we weren't gonna get that, than i honestly think this beat was made for an Alicia Keys or somebody that can sing with some deep emotion and shit....hearing that from me is probably a surprise to some ppl and i'm sure plenty will disagree..but, although i'm not a big fan of that genre, a much more vocal and emotional artist was meant to bless this beat...

regardless..
5/5

16. See the Joy
A very nice ending...i remember reading somewhere it was said that this song was just all live band, no sampling at all except for the beginning and the chorus and it comes across very well..
Definitely not some hard, bangin shit that u wanna bump in the car all the time but this is what makes Wu so great(and especially Rza, as i've been saying for 3 straight reviews now): it is ORIGINAL...it is creative..
this is just a shining example of the kind of things that are possible for a genre like hip hop which mixes poetry with music...and Rza pioneers it perfectly as always..
4/5

beats 3/5
lyrics 2.5/5
OVERALL: 5.5 out of 10

it's really hard to try to give overall grades to an album like this because it's practically 1 whole half of greatness and then the other half is a mix of average joints with a selection of horror show joints that wouldn't make the cut on Lil' Chinky's next album...

Mostly, it is a disappointment because Rza is such an unbelievably creative dude when it comes to albums that getting a half-assed project like this one is really below him...he could've done ALOT better..

I expect the upcoming Bobby Digital album (which i will definitely do justice with a review for) to be another step below this one....the gimmick-mode that Rza was just starting to enter into on Digital Bullet fully came out on BOAP and, from the stuff he's mentioned in recent interviews, i think the new album may actually have a tough time topping BOAP...this one at least had some Bronze tracks and a True Master banger...

we shall see....

I personally rate Grits higher than that, & i feel you overrated Fast Cars, The Grunge (found that completely wack IMO), The Whistle (wack beat IMO but solid verses) & You'll Never Know (sample too repetitive).

But in general, spot on. RZA needed to come harder.

in retrospect, i definitely did overrate it and i should change that....the only thing i like is the sample on it but he didn't even flip it well..

besides that, like i said the lyrics are nothing...

cant agree with you on Grits, but regardless, great review

Let me get this right here.....

1.Bob N' L
This tracks opening up with a sample of singing, then the beat comes in, the beat is actually ok and Rza comes ok on this joint, but it's really nothing too special about it, don't get me wrong it's not wack either, but if you look at his other intros this doesn't stand up. 3.5/5

2.The Grunge
This where the shit starts, the beat on this joint is hot, I fucks with this joint, the lyrics on here are suspect, but you can tell he's fucking around. I like the beat switch up at the end and then you have the Spanish lady making noise, it's sounds dope. 4.5/5

3.We Pop
This is a funny track, the beat is actually aight and Rza's verse is cool, but the guests appearances are what kills it for me, Shacronz is wack on here and Freemurder is even worst on here (That Jersey Line was horrible). This is a song we can definitely do without. 2.5/5

4.Grits
My cousin actually put me on this song, this is a good song. Hook is cool by Allah Real and Rza just spits real shit about growing up, I can respect that. Masta Killa does a better job with the storytelling on here, he has a great verse. This is a pretty solid track. 4/5

5.Fast Cars
I like this track. Hook is dope, Beat by True Master doesn't disappoint and Ghostface is on the track. Rza came cool on this joint, but I think Ghostface stole the spotlight on this joint, he just comes with some ill dartz and has that charisma on here, I love the clan shoutout at the end too. 4.5/5

6.Chi-Kung
This beat is mad right, and Rza flows on this joint right his verses are on point, so many lines on here, I like the second verse better he kind of goes on there "no protools to edit or outdate my producin", this track is a highlight of the album. 4.5/5

7.You'll Never Know
The beat on this joint is cool, Rza is cool on here, I think Cilvaringz is on here, I wasn't really feeling his verse like that, nothing against him, I already lost interest before his verse. Average material right here. 3.5/5

8.Drink, Smoke + Fcuk
I'm feeling this beat right here for some reason, but I will never play this song all the way through, you can tell he's playing around on here so i'll give him a pass, this is still average material though. 3.5/5

9.The Whistle
The beat on this joint is I'll I love the bass on here, Rza opens it up nice and spits some Ill shit, but i think Prodigal Sunn steals this one his verse and flow are very superb very quotable, Masta Killa comes sharp, a nice addition to the track, pretty solid. 4/5

10.The Drop Off
The beat on here is nice, Shacronz comes cool on here, I like his verse some hood shit, I'm not feeling the hook on this joint, that kind of kills it for me. You have rza fucking some chick on the track then he spits dartz, he flows nice on here "you a smart motherfucker or a stupid dunce" lol, What really kills it is that "Many Whips, many chips....." that just dropped the score for me. 3.5/5

11.Wherever I Go
I don't care what anyone says this beat is fire, Shacronz flows on here, even though his lines are pretty predictable but it's cool though, Rza has short verse about some bullshit, but freemurder Kills it for me on here, wack verses back 2 back, I don't know what else to say about this guy. 3.5/5

12.Koto Chotan
I'm not feeling the beat on here at all, by time the beat drops i already hit skip, Rza comes cool on here, we also see a Masta killa Appearance but he's just flowing nothing special, Tash Mohagany on here lol, I'm not even gonna comment. 3/5

13.A Day To God Is 1,000 Years
The beat on here is actually good, Rza comes with some ill shit I can't even front on this joint, he goes in on here, pretty solid track. 4/5

14.Cherry Range
I'm not really feeling this joint to much, beat is ok nothing really special, Rza is cool, we see a Beretta 9 appearance on here, but this track just doesn't grab my attention. Reminds me of project talk. 3/5

15.The Birth
I don't what to say about this joint, this is where Rza starts dropping the information on ya'll cats. Beat is cool, and Rza goes in, but he has done better, this average material though. 3.5/5

16.See The Joy
Not feeling this beat at all, I can't even keep this joint on, he does drops some shit if you are able to stay in tuned on here, nice but skippable too. 3.5/5

Beats - 3.5/5
Lyrics - 4/5
Overall - 3.5/5

I think if this had better beats it would've been cool because lyrically Rza came solid, The first part of the album is pretty good, but after "Wherever I Go" It seems like a long lag and you start to lose interest. ****Overall 3.5/5****
