Cops probe Bridgeport shooting




BRIDGEPORT -- A city man was shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon after the car he was driving crashed on Coleman Street, triggering an eruption of gunfire near a school that sent bystanders ducking for cover.
The victim, who was not immediately identified, was in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.




Police Lt. James Viadero said the victim was driving a black Volkswagen sedan on Coleman Street with two or three other male occupants shortly before 2 p.m. when they got into a dispute. During the argument, the car crashed into two other cars on the street before backing up onto the curb in front of the Coleman Park Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Viadero said it appears two passengers got out of the VW and at least one of them began firing into the car. He said the driver and possibly another passenger were shot.




The driver, bleeding profusely from his wounds, managed to get out of the car and stumbled to an apartment house at 20 Coleman St., where he collapsed inside. Viadero said a possible second shooting victim fled the scene along with the shooter or shooters.
Police scoured the area with a tracking dog, but had not arrested a suspect.




The shooting occurred about a block from Kolbe Cathedral High School while buses were lined up outside the school to pick up students. The Coleman Park health center, which is being renovated, was closed at the time.
Jonathan Lowe said he had been walking along Coleman Street,
canvassing neighbors for the U.S. Census Bureau,
when "all hell broke out."


"I was walking in front of the nursing home when I saw this black car backing into another car. The black car continued to back up until it was on the curb in front of the nursing home," Lowe said. "Then I saw this guy standing on the sidewalk by the other car and he was yelling at the driver of the black car. He was yelling, 'Shoot him! Shoot the son of a bitch!' The guy then pulled out a handgun and walked up to the driver's side of the black car and shot the driver at point-blank range."


Lowe said he didn't get a good look at the shooter's face. "I just got the hell out of there because I didn't want to get shot, too," he said.

The area where the shooting occurred has been the site of numerous drug-related crimes in the past, including several shootings. Last month, the Police Department's Strategic Enforcement Team arrested several people there on drug and trespassing charges. In March a Norwalk man allegedly tried to carjack a Milford woman he confronted on Coleman Street; and in October 2007 a 21-year-old man was shot outside his Coleman Street apartment.

About noontime, task force members, along with officers from Bridgeport and Stratford, surrounded the apartment building and called for Rodriguez to come out.

SAID Rodriguez surrendered to them without incident, police said.
Novas was shot once in the head as she stood inside the café on its opening night. Martinez, who worked as the café's doorman, was shot in the right lower leg.
Witnesses said Rodriguez had tired to enter the café and became embroiled in a dispute with Martinez, police related.
At one point Rodriguez allegedly yelled: "I have been on this block for 20 years and I'm not going anywhere!" police said. After being barred admission, he walked across the street, adding, "I'll call my people."
A few minutes later, police said a car pulled up across from the café and a man in the car handed Rodriguez a 9 mm pistol. Rodriguez then fired several shots in the direction of the café before fleeing, police said.
One shot fatally wounded Novas and the other hit Martinez, police said.
On April 7, police said Rodriguez's former girlfriend was walking with their 2-year-old daughter on Brooks Street when the defendant approached and pushed her on the ground.
While the woman lay on the sidewalk, police said two men pulled up in a car, and one of them handed the defendant a gun. Rodriguez then fired several shots near the woman, police said.
Rodriguez has an extensive criminal record and most recently was released from prison last year after serving six months for criminal mischief.

Novas was shot once in the head as she stood inside the café on its opening night. Martinez, who worked as the café's doorman, was shot in the right lower leg.
Witnesses said Rodriguez had tired to enter the café and became embroiled in a dispute with Martinez, police related.
At one point Rodriguez allegedly yelled: "I have been on this block for 20 years and I'm not going anywhere!" police said. After being barred admission, he walked across the street, adding, "I'll call my people."
A few minutes later, police said a car pulled up across from the café and a man in the car handed Rodriguez a 9 mm pistol. Rodriguez then fired several shots in the direction of the café before fleeing, police said.
One shot fatally wounded Novas and the other hit Martinez, police said.
On April 7, police said Rodriguez's former girlfriend was walking with their 2-year-old daughter on Brooks Street when the defendant approached and pushed her on the ground.
While the woman lay on the sidewalk, police said two men pulled up in a car, and one of them handed the defendant a gun. Rodriguez then fired several shots near the woman, police said.
Rodriguez has an extensive criminal record and most recently was released from prison last year after serving six months for criminal mischief.
