View Full Version : Method man & redman-blackout! 2 review

05-17-2009, 10:29 PM

When it was announced a few months back that “Blackout! 2” was dropping on Def Jam and Mef and Red was back in the studio making some heat, you tend to be skeptical until you hear the material and or the finished product. And the album doesn’t disappoint from the jump the “Intro” grips, grabs you and while still giving you that hip hop appeal rather than be overly emphasize the typical tactics most new rappers use ie “gimmicks”. And with Mef and Red you know what cha getting which is that “Dis for all My Smokers” anthems but Red and mef are much deeper than any thought, think, thunk or would have considered they would. Think of this album as an update to their formula.

Even with the slightness of having two viable commercial-Esq. records like “AYO” & “Ms. International” their isn’t too much so crap on this album I straight gutter in your face music like “I’m A Dope Nigga”, “Four Minutes to Lock Down” (featuring Ghostface & Raekwon) which both songs embody what 90’s hip hop was all about. But the hardest knocking song on this album that will keep systems bumping throughout the summer months is “Everybody Scream” (featuring Keith Murray) and reason being it’s a smash of a song is because it’s not trying to be a radio hit and it could be because it ain’t convential radio song.

Another track that smashes up this album without no compromises is “City Lights” (featuring Bun B and Pimp C on the hook) and it gives Red and Mef a new dynamic showing their diversity and proving to audiences they can smash these new type of down south beats as well. Overall this album is a solid 4 out 5 because of this album slight polish and mostly its oil slick because all the dirt this album has in it. I’m say this album has no screen nor no filter to it’s straight down the mouth to hit cha hard in the chest type of record.

4 out 5 stars

my review

BO2 (Intro)----4.5/5
I'm Dope Nigga----4.5/5
Dangerous Mcees------4/5
Errbody Scream-----4.5/5
Hey Zulu------4/5
City Lights-----4/5
Father's Day-----4/5
Mrs International--------4.5/5
How Bout Dat-----3.5/5
Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers------5/5
Four Minutes to Lockdown-------4.5/5
Neva Herd Dis B4--------3.5/5
I Know Sumptn--------2.5/5
A Lil' Bit------4/5

Overall I'd say an 4 to a 4.25 outa 5 album......some very good songs.....some songs lack at the end.......not as good as the first blackout! but a good sequel......I feel Meth absolutely laced this album wit the rhymes and seemed sharp as ever.....Redman was good on the album as well but Meth was top notch with energy, flow, and wordplay.......Great guest verses from keith murray, bun b, raekwon, and ghostface, I'd think this album would be an outstanding album if songs such as I know Sumptn Neva Herd Dis B4 and How Bout Dat was left off.....nice album overall tho

BO2 (Intro)
Perfect way of starting an album. I like the beat a lot, and both MC's are ok on this one. One of the better tracks on the album. 5/5

I'm Dope Nigga
Beat is ok'ish. The chorus could be better, but it's not that bad. I like Mef here more then Red. 3.5/5

Pete Rock does his thing right here, love the beat. The chorus is catchy, good work Sauks.

Dangerous Mcees
I liked the first version of the beat more, but it's still good. 3.5/5

Errbody Scream
I love Mef and Keith Murray on this one. The chorus is catchy and I like the beat. This is a track which will be played on weekends, party song. 4.5/5

Hey Zulu
One of my favourite tracks on the album. Banger. 5/5

City Lights
Nice track, and Bun B kills it in a good way. Catchy chorus too. 4/5

Father's Day
Really nice beat. A bit lower tempo, I like it. One of the bangers. 5/5

Mrs International
Love the beat, perfect song for the ladies. 4/5

How Bout Dat
I don't know what to say about this one. The beat is kinda weird. Streetlife is very nice. 3/5

Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers
Classic. 5/5

Four Minutes to Lockdown
Maybe a bit boring track, atleast the beat. Lyrics are top notch anyway. 4/5

Neva Herd Dis B4
First I hated this song, but somehow I'm starting to like this more and more. Chorus is funny and catchy. 3.5/5

I Know Sumptn
Maybe the worst track on the album. I've played it only few times, and don't think I would play it more often in the future. 2.5/5

A Lil' Bit
The beat reminds me a bit of Da Rockwilder. Club track. 3.5/5

Overall there are some fuckin classic tracks, but then there is tracks like I Know Sumptn which suck. But most of the tracks are very nice, and it's a 4.25/5 overall.

05-21-2009, 05:32 PM
The beat to Dangerous MCees isnt any different then the 1st, only now Sermon used someones elses vocals on the chorus instead of Biggies, thats all

05-22-2009, 12:54 PM
i thought it was gonna be a flop, but boy was i wrong, i give it 4/5, solid album

2 carrot cakes! haha

Ha! - look:

As of today, Blackout! 2 has received 'Universal Acclaim' with a weighted average score of 84.

With only 4 reviews that's bound to change, but still it's good to see.

05-22-2009, 06:14 PM
I give it a solid 4.5/5. Nothing to say about it that hasn't already been said. 2-3 bad songs, rest are bangers.

Solid album 8.5/10

06-03-2009, 02:59 PM
01: BO2: Very nice intro to the album 4/5
02: I'm Dope Nigga: Absolutely love this track. Its Meth and Red just ripping up a track
03: A-Yo (feat. Saukrates): This track is very addictive. It just seems to work great 4/5
04: Dangerous Mcees: Red and Meth at it again 4/5
05: Errbody Scream (feat. Keith Murray): Keith Murray just absolutely goes at this track. And Meths flow is amazing 4.5/5
06: Hey Zulu (feat. Poo Bear): Standard Red & Meth dopeness 4.5/5
07: City Lights (feat. Bun B): A southern beat that Meth and Red show good versatility over. Bun B though shows he is the specialist of this type of beat 4/5
08: Father's Day: Just amazing 5/5
09: Mrs. International (Skit):N/A
10: Mrs. International (feat. Erick Sermon): For some reason I have really begun to like this track. In the context of what else is going on in this album this is definately one of the weaker tracks 3/5
11: How Bout Dat (feat. Ready Roc & Streetlife): Red and Meth are good but the guests were disappointing particularly streetlife 3/5
12: Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers: Don't know what to say except perfection 5/5
13: Lock Down (Skit) (feat. DJ Kayslay)N/A
14: Four Minutes to Lock Down (feat. Raekwon & Ghostface Killah): Redman+Raekwon+Meth+Ghostface over great beat = 5/5
15: Neva Herd Dis B 4: This was one of the middle of the road tracks. I think its quite entertaining but not really a track that I would specifically put the album on for 3.5/5
16: I Know Sumptn (feat. Poo Bear): Possible third single on the album which they put on just in case the album really took off? It a bit How High 3/5
17: A Lil' Bit (feat. Melanie Rutherford); Love this track. Meth's verses are quite good 4/5

Overall I like the album. Its just two talented emcees just going at it over beats. Its nice to hear an album that isn't too dark or heavy. Overall 4/5

06-04-2009, 07:18 PM
At 1st it didnt meet my expectations but on 2nd + listenings it's got good chemistry. i like it, i cant stop listening to it so its got something i like, i wouldnt say its a brilliant album but it sure got something that got me hooked.

the only bad thing i think is the appearance of Bun B, imo dude is wack. he just doesnt fit in with the song, he raps too fast for the beat and it just sounds messy.

but tbh im just glad Red & Meth made another album, instead of just dropping one and neglecting the fans, they came good! well done red & meth - just on the strength of doing another album regardless of the quality of it.

i say 4/5

06-04-2009, 07:21 PM
what !!! no akon. jamie foxx, t pain. this album sucks with no talent

oh yeah, brilliant to see they aint been forced to work with artists like these who have no business on an album like this

06-04-2009, 07:39 PM
Lol @ Bun B "being whack", hes known for his fast delivery, aint nothin new

06-04-2009, 07:57 PM
^^ i dont listen to his music cos i dont like it so i wouldnt know about his signature delivery

Yeah I'm Back With Another One.....

01: BO2:
This is a nice Intro right here, I kind of like the lyrics on here more than the beat itself,Mathematics could've supplied a better beat. Method Man & Redman prove that they still got it on the mic, with nice rhymes and flows. It's not too long either. Nice intro 4/5

02: I'm Dope Nigga:
This is my shit right here, This beat bangs hard as shit in your whip or stereo without a doubt. Meth & Red just go in on here, I wish they had more tracks like this on the album. One of my favorite lines on here is the last Meth verse

"I'm the 'king of rock', dimes, grams and keys,Cuz the world don't give a fuck if I got a fam to feed/This a heroin dream, smash up a fiend,You can see this pack in my jeans, put you back on your lean"

Meth is definitely going in on here, already coming harder than he did on 4:21, Redman Starts this track off real well too with his wild style and rugged tone, he still has loaded clips left for Mc's. 4.5/5

03: A-Yo (feat. Saukrates):
This is a great radio track. Everything just flows well on here. I like Redman on this one

"Haha, she like "Red so cool",Any nigga after me, it's a deja vu"

LOL, This track has a great vibe to it. The Hook is very catchy and adds to the track. Method Man comes in and is gritty on here

"I do the dirt that keep my hand on the work,I got the other hand up Mona Lisa's skirt/My aim one since day one stop,How many shots will it take to make son drop?"

It may have that commercial sound but there is real shit in the lyrics, don't get it twisted at all. This is a banger. 4/5

04: Dangerous Mcees:
I'm feeling this track right here, I think Redman took this one right here, He just comes in and out with some nice rhymes I like the ending part too, Redman always keeps the humor in his shit but keeps it grimey. Meth comes in flowing on here too, his verse is pretty solid as with every other verse on the album. This is another banger. 4/5

05: Errbody Scream (feat. Keith Murray):
I like how the beat slows up on here then they just speed up and start going in on here, Redman starts this track off real nice and then we have the guest spot from the energetic Keith Murray, I will say the opening line

"Aiyo, fuck your prognosis on who's the dopest,You get skate like super chronic holitosis"

IDK about that one Keith...LOL, but besides that he goes in on here and kills it with the flow, keeping the momentum of the track going. Method Man just comes in with his flow and just tops this off great, this goes hard in the stereo. 4/5

06: Hey Zulu (feat. Poo Bear):
I won't lie, I slept on this track myself, but after a few listens, this track is actually dope. Some may brush it off as a club attempt, but this is just a lil' party chill type track. Meth and Red, everything about the vibe of this track just flows nicely together. The Beat Switch-up at the Hook is pretty nice too. Method & Red are just kicking nice rhymes on here, I'm glad I gave this one another shot. 4/5

07: City Lights (feat. Bun B):
I like that this track shows that Meth & Red can spit over anytype of beat, and are not afraid to switch up thier style. With that being said, that's all I really like about it, Redman does come hard on here but the fact that he used autotune means he lost. Bun B delivers a good verse on here aswell, he doesn't disappoint at all. Method Man's verse was good too, but overall there are so many other bangers on here that I find myself skipping this. 3.5/5

08: Father's Day:
I like the tempo of this track, pretty nice and calmed down compared to the other tracks on here. Anyways this is a great track right here, Method man & Redman both delivery heat on here, there is not that much I can say about this one. 4/5

09: Mrs. International (Skit):N/A

10: Mrs. International (feat. Erick Sermon):
This one of my favorites on the album, I love the beat and this track is just grown and sexy, there's nothing wrong with switching it up once in awhile, and they do a good job at it, the hook is great and Redman's verse is just humorous but he's still spittin nice, Method Man is just nice and calm on here to make this track what it needs to be. 4.5/5

11: How Bout Dat (feat. Ready Roc & Streetlife):
I'm not really feeling the beat like that on here, but they deliver on this one. Redman is good, that guy Ready Roc could've came better on here, but anyways Streetlife's verse was pretty fresh, nice to hear from him, I wonder what he's up to now. Method Man came solid on this one too. There's way to many other bangers on here though. 3.5/5

12: Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers:
I mean I guess I could give this track a 5/5 but I don't smoke at all so I don't know what's the hype about, but when you are not smoking a blunt this track is still hot and they both deliver for all you pot smokers out there. 4/5

13: Lock Down (Skit) (feat. DJ Kayslay)N/A

14: Four Minutes to Lock Down (feat. Raekwon & Ghostface Killah):
This shit is hot right here, Everyone sounds fresh on this track right here. The beat is just right to spit over too, Redman & Wu Collaborations are always something to look foward to and this one doesn't disappoint at all, I was most definitely anitcipating the Ghost verse and he STILL delivers, Raekwon sounds fresh off Blood On Chef's Apron and you know Method Man always delivers on Wu-Orientated tracks, Redman always comes grimey, this is one of my favorites on the album. 4.5/5

15: Neva Herd Dis B 4:
I'm feeling this track, This isn't as great as the other joints on this album but Redman is spitting flames on this one, one of my fav. lines by him on here is "If Rap Fail, You Can Bet I'm Doing Porn" LOL, that whole verse was nice, Method Man comes solid on here too. This is solid. 4/5

16: I Know Sumptn (feat. Poo Bear):
Yeah they could've definitely left this one off the album, this is pretty weak right here, I'm not even gonna drag this on any longer. 2.5/5

17: A Lil' Bit (feat. Melanie Rutherford):
They could've ended the album with a better track, but this is still a pretty good track. Sounds like another club joint, I think they should've ended the album with some raw shit though, They still come correct on the mic so I won't complain too much. 3.5/5

Beats: 4/5
Lyrics: 4/5
Overall: 4/5 Dartz

This is pretty fresh album from the dynamic duo, they both come through with pretty hard lyrics, Method Man in particular shows that he hasn't lost it at all and comes harder than he did on 4:21, Redman is still grimey after all these years, there are some filler tracks on here and there could've been more "Basement" sounding tracks on here, but this one is updated and fresh and still raw.****Overall 4/5****

06-05-2009, 01:04 PM
This reminds me a little bit of "radiorap"
"RnB" Rap & Bullshit.
Meth & Red are excellent rappers, they shouldnt waste their talent to this Club Rap,Let the Flo-rida do it!

A-yo's chorus made me wanna hang myself.....

06-08-2009, 12:07 PM
Very refreshing album. Not surprised though... its Red and Meth. The Production is real fly too. I was maybe expecting another Math beat, maybe one RZA... You know just to make it officially blackout 2! lol. All good though. Four Minutes tol Lock Down SICK!!!! I m Dope Nigga, Hav dropped a beast of a beat. CRAZY!!

I give the album a 4/5.... very dope listen overall.

Maybe I ll do a track by track after a few more listens.

06-08-2009, 12:47 PM
My RedMan Page is dope lol.

Is this album a must , ? That is my question

06-09-2009, 10:45 PM

But if you are a fan of REd and Meth, and want something new to listen too... YES.

Dammmmmn !!! "4 min to Lock Down" kills me , meth & red are powerfull and rae and ghost remind me "The mgm" performance .
Album deceive me , why they don't choose better instrumentals for fanssss!!!!!!!!!

Best of '09 for me.

Banging album, I must of played City Lights 100 times already.

06-18-2009, 08:02 PM
im not fellinng the album.

I love the intro. ithink its the best track of the album. probaly mathamethics is to blame.

a yo is good. i wish the trumpet was louder.

dangerous mind is pretty good.

city lights is a sellout song.

internatinoal is nice.

that track where they say yeah yeah yeah.

who knows maybe it will grow on me.

06-20-2009, 10:34 AM
very good album

06-22-2009, 10:45 PM
The album isn’t as good as the first Blackout!, but still a bangin album. There really isn’t any skips, so it’s to play all the way through. Some lacking beats really get saved from Mef & Red’s verses. I would have this in my top 10 (maybe 15) of 2009.

Top 5: A-Yo, City Lights, Father’s Day, Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers (fav) , Four Minutes To Lock Down

Grade (3.7/5) B+

06-23-2009, 06:04 PM
^^ yeah this will definitely be in the top 10-15 albums this year.. it's definitely a real banger, Red & Meth both rip it hard as fuck and they is following the times without fucking up too much (except for a few tracks at the end that has lacking beats). But joints like "Ayo", "Intro", "I'm Dope Nigga", "Mrs. Interational", "4 Minutes to Lockdown", "Dangerous MC's", etc makes up for a few weaker joints.

the problem for me regarding meth collabing w/ red is.... although i do recognize red as a dope lyricist (but not as good as he used to be), he's on that wacky / always playing / goofy tip. and that just aint my thing. i realize meth has different styles. he can go from serious/dark/dramatic (which is what i want) to the redman goofiness.
i just dont dig that vibe. lyrically, BO-1 is a 10/10. but the album overall is a 8/10 b/c of the beats (not a fan of e.sermon).
BO-2 is even worse. again, lyrically its a 8.5/10. red has improved over his 2006 - '08 stuff. meth is still a killer killer killer MC, but........ remember the 1st time u heard meth's verse from "box in hand" on 'ironman' and his verse from "shadowboxing" ? it knocked u out of your seat!! ALL his verses used to do that (it was his charisma)! meth is still a lyrical beast, but the recent lack of charisma has led to his verses being not as memorable.... its killed his "wow factor" for the most part.
and then the beats on BO-2...... fuck!!!! despite some of them being borderline-whack, i personally hate the "14 tracks / 10 producers" approach to making albums (NO cohesion)!
its WAY more commercial-sounding than BO-1. i thought meth learned his lesson from "tical 0".

i give it a 5/10 (mediocre). i'll never learn the lyrics to this album b/c the beats keep discouraging me from popping it in.

06-29-2009, 08:55 PM
honestly, i like this one better for the most part.
granted it doesn't have timeless songs like the original did, but other than those few timeless songs i really didn't like the sound of the original blackout. atleast not the production. then again that could be a biased opinion since i dont like alot of that millennium sounding hip hop, i don't think chronic 01 is even that great.
anyways, yeah there aren't really any song on BO2 that i'd label timeless except maybe "dis iz 4 all my smokers" but the album itself is more consistent with just a good, chill, smoker's record.
so i may like it more, so IMO i prefer it, but maybe "better" isn't the best word to use since both records are great in their own right.
def one of my favorite hip hop releases of the year thus far.

07-05-2009, 11:17 PM
One of the worst albums of 09 so far. This album left me feeling cold.

07-18-2009, 08:44 PM
i've only listened to it a handful of times, but im loving the album for some reason. gave it a banger rating. its definitly not the first; but it has its moments. both of good and bad. some of the beats sounded the same, and some of their flows sounded the same when you know red and meth steady are switchin that up.

08-03-2009, 10:35 AM
01. Bo2 (Intro)
Very Wu-Tang sounding opening with blasting sirens, live-chants and vintage vocal samples coupled with tight drum work courtesy of Mathematics. This works perfect as introduction to the album.

02. I'm Dope Nigga
Another heavy beat courtesy of Havoc, real thumping bassline and both MC's go in hard on this one. Method Man has stepped up majorly since the "4:21" album.

03. A-Yo (ft. Saukrates)
This one's catched alot of mixed opinions on this board, personally i think it's real hot. It got a nice summervibe to it and although the hook is a lil cheesy i often find myself singing along to it lol and Redman's "she like Red so cool, Any nigga after me, it's a deja vu" is fucking brilliant.

04. Dangerous Emcees
This is probably the song on the album that's most vintage Red N Meth, as it is a dark and funk-laced production from Eric Sermon. It is pretty short but might be my favorite song on the whole album, i wish they would have got some more Sermon bangers for the LP. The MC's display a raw chemistry, showing they haven't lost a step since last go-around and their voices and styles definitely compliments eachother.

05. Errbody Scream
Weird beat that keeps switching the tempo between verses and hook, it works aight. Keith Murray does a good guestspot and Method Man kills it with his delivery. 7/10

06. Hey Zulu
This is just decent, i'm not too fond of the beat - a little too many things going on in there, don't know what the fuck happened to Rockwilder. I bet this joint would work good in a club though and lyrically it's strong as can be expected from these 2 vets.

07. City Lights
The duo's taking us down south with this one and brings in Bun B to compliment them, i'm really feeling this collaboration - maybe not the type of production you would expect to hear on the album but either way all three MC's deliver and Redman even fucks a little with the autotune. Redman smashes this song.

08. Fathers Day
More good shit, this beat also got some Wu-Tang flavor to it and even a sample of someone going "this bounce is for all my Wu-Tang motherfuckas in the hosue tonight" and a vocal-sample cut in before the loop repeats. Method Man flows smooth over this one, shit like this is created for his voice but lyrically i'd give the edge to Redman - he gotta be the king of one-liners or something lol. "Soon as I, pick up my pen, I begin my flow, I close my eyes then write rhymes in a Blackout mode".

09. Ms. International
Smooth summer-vibe song that's the most radio-friendly song on the album, nevertheless it's real fucking good although i know alot of y'all hate on anything that's commercial. It's basically a dedication to all the beautiful ladies and Mef always been good on these type of jams.

10. How Bout Dat?
Not feeling the beat to much on this and neither StreetLife or Ready Roc managed to impress me much with there features. It's not wack but definitely nothing special or memorable either.

11. Dis iz 4 All My Smokers
Aaaah, greatness being represented here - the duo gets blunted and share tales of their beloved herb over one of the sickest beats on the whole album. DJ Scratch uses the strings in a similair way to older RZA productions and this is definitely the smokers anthem of 2009. My favorite verse here goes to Method Man's first where he speaks on how he first got hooked; Yup, I'm that hood, my brother, love me some Cali kush "Never thought that little bush in that baggie would have me hooked, I'm a pothead, everyone look, and point your fingers At the bad guys, with the cottonmouths and glass eyes".

12. Four Minutes to LockDown
Method Man, Redman with Raekwon and Ghostface Killah?? two of hip-hop's heaviest duo's meet on this joint over a hectic beat from underrated producer Bink Dog and all get their shine on - i like how Meth throws out the "next to RZA, ain't no nigga better than the group" line in here but the illest verse award has to go to Ghost who lay down another one of his trademark stories about a bitch getting pulled over by the cops and finding some firearms; ""That's my fathers, And I'm licensed to carry those shits regardless, Ya'll just played my man, caught her with a million dollars Worth of fireworks, coming back from Japan. It's nothing, ya'll police be fronting And stop looking at my pussy, like ya'll want to suck it". Haha classic.

13. Neva Heard Dis B4
I wasn't feeling this song much the first times i heard it but it definitely has grown on me with each listen, it's not at all as vintage Sermon as "Dangerous MC's" but production is still nice. "nights like this, I bring the pain - Introducing the 11th member of Wu-Tang, Liu Kang, Doc spittin', fire out the palms" spit Redman with his trademark flow while Mef spits heat like "I don't do tight tees or flip flops, been a goon since the womb And my dad had that heroin bone chain with the spoon". 7.5/10

14. I Know Sumpthn
Wack party-track that should be left of the album, might have some dope lyrics but the beat and chorus is giving me a big headache.

15. A Lil' Bit
The album closes with another joint more aimed at the clubs than the hardcore followers and although it's alot better than the previous song the album should have ended with something more memorable. Method Man and Redman do work good over tracks like this but this is quite dissapointing and leaves a sour taste in your mouth after finnishing the whole LP front-to-back.

Most of the songs on "Blackout 2" is very solid material and lyrically Method Man and Redman balances off eachothers styles, flows and voices to perfection. Redman is as dope as ever and this is (together with his work on "8 Diagrams") the best prestation from Mef since "Tical 2000". Some of the production sounds out-of-place and could succesfully have been replaced with more traditional beats for the duo to rhyme over but nevertheless it's a solid effort from hip-hops most blunted.

Lyrics: 4.5/5
Beats: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5

I finally heard it last weekend and it sucks. I'm not surprised either because the first Blackout isn't good.
