Twitter has a strong role in the developing Iran situation

Today I noticed extremely heavy traffic when looking at their search engine:

Click on either the #IranElection or #NoMaintenance hash tag. There are Iranians updating the world in real time from whats happening in the streets. Apparently there are even rumors of where all those missing college students are being detained. Whats even more bizarre is that Twitter was scheduled for some planned updates for its heavily stressed infrastructure tonight and there was a large out cry from people around the world to keep the service up and running since its the only easily accessible form of communication.

Yeah so the Iran gov restricted bandwidth nationwide once the action started but as twitter is so low bandwidthy u can still use it out there.

There is claims that government hackers + officials are trying to attack Twitter's service (DoS possibly) and also track down Iranians using it to expose the situation.
