ok, this sounds like just some dumb error
i think u should uninstall and re-install your dvd drive
if u wana do this go to
Control panel> system> device manager
once u get there, find the dvd drive from the list
when u click it,
u can see if its functional. more than likely it is
its from here that u can re-install your drive.
u got to uninstall it first
and then restart your computer
it will automaticlly detect the "new hardware" and install it
i suggest u try this

stupid question: what do you expect the drive to read from a blank dvd?
just go to burn... see if it burns anything. if not, buy a new one... they cost around £10 or less.

Dick head, when you enter a blank dvd the option pops up for it or it shows up when you click computer, anyways it spits it out everytime I try to write something on it...
yeah, but you can cancel that so it does nothing... which is what you might have done.. i said it was a stupid question. i wasnt trying to be a dick lol
just buy a new one, they cost pennies.

google the model/type and see it its a common problem
most of the time it is and if so then u should be able find solutions that someone posted.
if not, just buy a new dvd writer drive and repalce it
p.s: u should go to Device Manager and update the driver (if not updated). this might be the problem
