View Full Version : Why do people watch sports?

MAYOR QUIMBY

I don't see the value in watching sports. I cant stand males who fight over sport teams and talk about sports like it's their woman. Soccer, football, baseball, hockey, etc,,,,Someone explain this stupidity to me.

(I didn't put this thread in the Sports forum due to possible bias opinions.)

the feeling of living vicariously through your favorite players, the two or so hour break from reality it gives you, the rush you get gambling on games, the chance to show pride in your city/region, you just really like the sport, ect.

idk, i find sports boring and easy to be distracted from.

and very 1 dimensional.

i like when there's a backdrop story and ali v. frazier but young men that go to miami trying to win against young men that go to georgia is not entertaining to me.

the husker game days are the shit though LOL. you can hear the whole fucking state going nuts. everyone wearing red. literally everyone, you look like a totally doofus for wearing otherwise.

Escapism.

Ghost In The 'Lac
10-09-2009, 02:45 PM
For me its nothing really to do with escapism or living dreams thru others etc. Maybe thats like 10-20% of the reason. I grew up playing football, loving football, always playing and practising, so why would i want to watch it played by the best in the world?

No, i played a sport where you kick a ball, with your foot. Football.

If your talking about American Football, which neither uses feet or a real ball, then fair enough.

I'm assuming you don't know the rules of the game (since you're not American, that's understandable). But there are points in the game where you do use your feet on the ball (or non-ball as I assume you'd label it).

Just keeping things accurate.

yeaaa because the 3% of the game that uses your foot should be the basis for the name of the game. that makes a lot of sense.

Its like me saying we should call football handball because the goalkeepers are allowed to use their hands.

Why did you bother argueing that point? Who ever said using your feet wasnt alowed in American Football?

We watch sports because we are men.

Thats really all the explanation needed...but...

I've been a sports fan for so long its just natural. Im hooked on my teams.

I dont kno that i'd watch sports if I didnt have a team to root for tho.

But I like watching in general. I'll watch hockey occasionally, even Faggy soccer i'll watch briefly.

But I started with baseball because i played it, then after I got hooked on baseball, it was the others.

But mainly im into the sports I play or played like football, baseball, basketball and golf.

Mumm Ra

the only sport i really watch is basketball because I play it all the time.
i guess its cool to watch the best of the best at what you like to do and even pick up some pointers.
if people liked to watch michael jordan i wouldn't call that escapism, they just wanna witness a person doing shit so much above the rest. you wouldn't want to watch a bunch of amateur losers play sports all the time.

But Id agree with Ghost that sports is life.

Altho I disagree on his stance of America. You clearly dont have a clue what yer saying, as America is one of the biggest sports watching countries there is.

Theres a shitload of college football teams that pack in over 100,000 fans each game.

Sports playing too. All of the best football and basketball players in the world are American.

I mean prolly 90% of the tv I watch is sports related, and atleast 60% of my internet time goes to something sports related.

Id say the american college sports scene is the closest youve got to european support. The fans get realy passionate, and it really means something

But your NFL and NBA teams are just "franchises" that can pack up and move cities if things arent going well!!

But over here and in south america your team is your physical bond to your area, which is why its so passionate. Its more than sport as seen from american terms, its not an "TV event". And in poor countries its a symbol for them and means alot more than just winning and losing and wathiing the game.

Stale People like Nikky Touch wouldnt understand that though.

Indeed, I've always thought that American Sports were designed to be watched
(more so than others, which in my opinion flow more fluidly when actually played)
When I watch The NFL, Basketball or a Baseball game, I just zone out
In contrast to Footbal over here, they just goes on & on
As if the theatre of the game is streched out for viewing pleasure
Of course the format of the periods compared to our halfs is obvious
But just in general, it's palyed out to last, I've always found that interesting.

And seeing the fans as well during the games, they just seem layed back for the most part
Granted, when the game gets near the end, there is tension like in the bottom of the 9th
Where as the only comparison with Football for example is a penaly shootout
But in a league match, after an hour and a half, the games done.
Not so for American Sports, although that surely is to do with the International branch out.
I remember watching a Baseball game that went into something like the 22nd Inning ?!?!?!
Thats what I'm saying, thats more than 2 scheduled Baseball games.
Talk about getting your moneys worth or getting the most out of a game.

In comparison how we would go to the pub for a drink on a weeknight with some friends
They would just go to a ball game, all the same, it's no big deal.
Where as over here, going to a game is a big deal.
I could be wrong but thats how it comes across to me.

The real difference is that you guys are playing other countries, so your right, the closest thing we have to that type of rivalry is college sports because its so regional.

But dont try to tell me that American pro sports aint regional. Ask Boston and New York, Pittsburgh and Cleveland etc.

Its a great way to waste time. i love sport, FOOTball and Basketball mostly, but i watch everything. and im fucking crazy about my football team. They are shit, and we dnt win fuck all and we get fucked by european teams on the regular but i fucking love the team. i went to a game in Istanbul, 30,000 capacity stadium and its the loudest stadium in the world, 140 decibels. its a fucking orchestra, the fans go to support the team, and that stadium is packed everygame, its a frightening atmosphere, they sing and swear for 90 minutes and its non-stop.

its something most ppl wont understand, supporting teams to such crazy levels is about being loyal and having a sense of pride. some football teams in europe have a political affliation with them to, so they will be socialists, nationalists and so on. so its not always about sport for some.

i was at that Man Utd game, the fans went crazy, and Carsi the main support group jus put on their own show. they do that every game. they are very political the stadium has Che Guevera banners everywhere and they are propa on that Socialist thing. It is disturbing sometimes though, you would think you wouldnt feel uncomfortable in a stadium. but when 30,000 ppl begin to chant "if you make one more mistake we are gonna fuck you tonight" to their own players you start to think what are these ppl on. They even forced a Chairman to resign once after they started chanting bad shit about the mans daughter.

naaah though. im going to watch the sorry ass bills play the sorry ass browns tommrrow (for free, the only way youd catch me at this game). trust me man, these fans, although very passionate about their crappy teams, pale in comparison to supportors of football in south america or europe, or an international game in a heated vivalry.

yeah I always wanted to go to a Besiktas game and it just happened to be against Man Utd. I was told that because the teams shit this season the fans were quieter than usual. Its a stadium most sports fans should go to, its one of those stadiums all football fans should see before they die.

the countdown chant is done everygame and its fucking insane, when they do it and start jumping up and down the entire stadium starts shaking.
