one of my favorite mixes of all time is:

Haze Presents..."New York Reality Check 101" (mixed by DJ Premier)

a very good representation of the 20 illest underground 12" singles from the New York scene in 1997, professionally mixed down by the one and only DJ Premier. the "Crooklyn Cuts" series is dope too as you mentioned.

This was the first thing that came into my mind when I read the title, this was an actual mixtape. Some, like Lil' Wayne's and shit, you can't really call mixtapes.

Crooklyn Cuts by DJ Priemer is a good one.

I've always liked DJ Green Lantern's tapes.
Best Of 2Way Thousand is a good one.

It all depends on what you look at as "great", but I give u some of my favorites. I'll take it back to a period when the majority of DJ's were actually mixing and they were actually being released on a cassette tape:

Chill Will from the East Side's Fruit Flavas and Masterpiece tapes around 1992. There's this one tape where he looped the interlude intro from Pete & CL's The Basement and is rhyming over it, the rest of the tape is packed with 92 classics and a old school set. One of the most creative mixtapes I've heard, with the DJ rhyming, mixing and composing it like a mini album!

www.myspace.com/djchillwillfte

then I would go to DJ Evil Dee and Ron G's tapes. I like Evil Dee's work a little more than Ron's because of the increased skill he as on the tables, dropping records in a way that it shocking and make your head nod. He puts his old mixtapes in mp3 form at his podcast.

http://djevildee.podomatic.com/ (http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=2137484&blogId=311622533)
Evil Dee's Escape From Hell Mixtape (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u59/dome84/escape.jpg&imgrefurl=http://rekordzonwheelz.blogspot.com/2009/06/dj-evil-dee-escape-from-hell.html&usg=__fJRzIiYvTBZWx40BuJakOfb3v3A=&h=600&w=900&sz=455&hl=en&start=16&sig2=nMGvPvr5Ga_UWOI126ffSA&um=1&tbnid=GQtWIlO8QLhdLM:&tbnh=97&tbnw=146&prev=/images%3Fq%3Devil%2Bdee%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfiref ox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26um%3D1&ei=1iFPS7_ZONPOlAfukYCfCg)

Those tapes are part of what kept hip hop essence intact for my home of NYC, because it was a neighborhood activity with DJs releasing their best mixes to mom & pop stores for people to buy in the hood. It was a great way to circumvent the corporate structure that began to exploit hip hop.

Keith Murray-Kickin Ass
Rock of Heltah Skeltah-The Best Of Rock
Rock Of Heltah Skeltah-Veteranz Day
Steele Of Smif N Wessun and Tek of Smif N Wessun did some solo mixtapes that i got but i forgot the name of them. I think Tek's is called It Iz What It Iz. That's a good one and that's the first one he did. I got another mixtape by him but it's not that good.
50 Cent-Guess Who's Back

I love New York rappers mixtapes because they always have them hardcore joints and sometimes the mixtapes are better than their albums LOL. Raekwon has several mixtapes that i haven't heard yet that i wanna buy and Ghostface Killah has done a few that i wanna buy. Sean Price's Donkey Sean Jr mixtape i got and that's pretty good. He's also done a few more mixtapes i wanna get. I also wanna check out 50 Cent's other mixtapes and Jadakiss and Styles P's mixtapes. I still haven't heard Inspectah Deck's Resident Patient mixtape yet. Is that any good? I don't like his solo albums but he's a ill mc. What's the name of that Keith Murray mixtape that came out a few years ago and the mixtape title is the same name as his last album? I haven't heard it yet. Redman's Ill At Will volume 1 and volume 2 mixtapes were disappointing and so was his Live From The Bricks mixtape.

one mixtape that hasn't been mentioned that i haven't seen mentioned yet is Mister Cee's classic "The Best of Notorious B.I.G." - both the original 22 tracks version and the 10 year anniversary double disc (50 Biggie tracks deep, barely no material from his two retail LP's)!!

Claaa7, thanks for the info about Mister Cee's Notorious Big anniversary mixtape that has a lot of songs. Where can i buy that from? Isn't Mobb Deep's Free Agents double cd a mixtape? That's a tight album. How many mixtapes has Mobb Deep done? I wanna get some of them.

fatboybrandon
01-21-2010, 11:54 AM
those Mobb mixtapes are some of my favorites, for the quality of music alone in their unreleased songs you'll hear on them. I can't think of many other hip hop artists who come close to such a high quality catalog of unreleased music in numerous mixtapes besides Wu, Pun & Big. I'd much rather buy up official vinyl releases of unreleased music by artists like Mobb, instead of get it on a mixtape with the DJ talking over it.

Charles, check out the J-Love series of "Mobb Misses"

Alright thanks. I don't like dj's talking over songs on mixtapes either. DJ Clue started that shit didn't he? LOL. I like his The Professional mixtape. The Professional part 2 mixtape was kinda disappointing. Funkmaster Flex's first mixtape that Loud records released is the shit. Sadat X and Akinyele's Loud Hangover song is on there and that song is the shit. Akinyele's lyrics on that song are raw. Funkmaster Flex and Big Kap did a mixtape called The Tunnel i think that Def Jam records released. That's a tight mixtape. Backstage soundtrack is supposed to be a mixtape and it's pretty good.
