View Full Version : Qi Gong

Similar to Tai Chi.
Qi Gong concentrates on breathing and stretching to increase the flow of energy(chi) thru the body.

there are many styles, i practice the 8 animal forms.
it takes about 10-15 minutes and you will feel fantastic. its great way to start your day or recharge in the evening.

you can just follow this vid. concentrate on breathing in deeply thru the nose and slowly out the mouth.

Sid doesn't believe that stretching and exercise has an effect on energy levels, balance endurance and strength.

3,000 years of practice is a joke to him.

he'd rather run bucky nekkid in the woods with a stick chanting harry potter spells out of a satanic bible.

basically Sid has lost control of himself.

stretching and breathing correctly can get you tremendous strength

Uncle Steezo

i also learned the Dancing Star, which i just started doing a week ago.
i can't find a vid to demonstrate but its more like yoga.

8 stances. one for each chakra and a clearing stance. while in each stance you do deep breathing and visualize the appropriate color and emotion for the corresponding chakra.

the stances are some of the basic forms of wushu (kung fu)
snake
leopard
crane
lake
sword finger
dragon claw
tiger
crab

its good for not only balancing the energy vortexes(chakras), but can indicate energy blockages and imbalance thru the sensation of pain or discomfort while in a particular stance.

breathing/meditation and stretching/balance is something I try to do daily, it's a great physical stress reliever.

SID, you take internet beef too seriously, anybody can benefit from these exercises.

if ppl would just detach it from the kung-fu mysticism they've seen in movies, meditation could do a lot for them.

do you follow any particular forms? i'm always looking to expand my routine.
eventually i want to have a "medicine cabinet" of forms so if i wake up feeling like "x" i can do "y".

right now i'm just doing basic total body/balancing forms.

I've learned the animal forms of Qi Gong that you mentioned, but don't do them routinely, no.

the stretches I do come mainly from flexibility training and yoga, but I've definitely adopted some wushu philosophy to my stretching routines. I breath to time my stretches rather than count.

breathing in through the nose, then out through the mouth twice as much, breathing in positive energy and breathing out more negative energy.

I know what you mean by sort of self prescribing and using certain exercises as a way to relieve certain stress or tension. I'd like to achieve the same thing, I've thought of it more as my mind, body and spirit becoming in tune and being in harmony, always knowing what they can provide for each other.

we sometimes neglect one or try to juggle attention between them.
i include myself in that.
this world is constantly attacking one or the other.

you learned from the master? thats dope.
there is definitely a bonus to having an instructor in terms of form correction and such but detrimental? how so?
i would think books and vids are better than none, if you don't have access to or can't afford to take classes.

a few months ago, I stumbled across the San Diego Asian Film Festival ( i was just goin to the movies to see "Where the Wild Things Are") and met some folks who i would later find out are world-renowned Qi experts...a husband and wife, both PhD's---the man an ex-kung fu movie stuntman who is one of the oldest living people in the world with the disease cystic fibrosis which he's been able to overcome thanks to Qi Gong. He walked across the entire United States in 1986 to promote Qi Gong and show what it's done for him.

His wife is a neuroscientist and also a fuckin Qi savant who can read your Qi flow and where your blockages are just from looking at you....(when i met them they were doing free Qi readings and telling people where their problems might be, they correctly diagnosed me at the time that i had some serious stress problems right around the time I abruptly left a MEGA stressful hellacious hell-hole job)..

so...

ever since i met them I've been attending their free monthly Qi gong classes and getting to know them better...and my energy level has completely changed, i don't fight with my girlfriend as much, i sleep better, have better digestion, and I'm playing better hockey..

but, contrary to the threadstarter's shown technique, the way we've learned is to always breathe in thru the nose and basically exhale down your throat into your own body.. It oxygenates the blood heavily and revitalizes you.

I'm still a beginner at it but i do it everyday and it definitely fuckin works....

PS: these folks have been at the Wu-dung mountains, been at the monastery, studied under Qi expert monks in other remote mountain monasteries in Taiwan.. and the guy is famous for having one of the largest kung fu movie collections in the world (http://dcist.com/2008/06/dcist_interview_craig_reid.php), no joke...i think it even says in that interview that he narrated some of the National Geographic shows about the Shaolin monks and shit....and he's currently a fight choreographer....some MEGA-cool people to meet completely randomly

i practise Tai Chi but not as often as i should, never got into the forms of Qi Gong but i would like to find a good teacher for any of these methods of meditation.

currently i practise the Zen buddhist tradition of zazen (again not as regularly as i should) but for those who want peace of mind and to help breathe correctly i suggest lookin into it.

i suggest that people who enjoy tai chi or qi gong look into practising zazen as imo , its more focused on the mind and soul, which is followed by the body. breathing and posture are two things i have improved which as lead to other benefits

I don't have either of them (although I think I'll probably invest in 1 of them soon) but from what I understand they're a bit more thorough than the previous one I mentioned. The one I have is still a great book, but these 2 (especially the "Healing Prescriptions" one I think) make it easier to figure out which specific Qi Gong exercises will benifit you the most.
