Metal is good once in a blue moon when you need to air out some fustration.

Coal Chamber are good.

I'm a huge fan of Kyuss-esque stoner metal, "metalcore" (whatever that means these days), thrash, hardcore, blah blah blah.

One of my biggest peeves about the metal world, is the average listener's compulsion to label and seperate all the different kinds of metal. Shit, if it sounds good...I like it. If it sounds ass, then I won't like it.

Also, anybody else notice how popular "metalcore" is with christian youth groups? Blows my mind, but it makes a weird kind of sense.

Metal isn't only about airing frustrations unless the only metal you know is crap angsty nu-metal bands like Coal Chamber

anyway

favorite thrash albums:
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Sodom - Persecution Mania; Agent Orange
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales/Emperor's Return; To Mega Therion
Slayer - Hell Awaits; Reign in Blood (typical I know)
still gotta love the first four Metallicas too

favorite death metal:
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness; Blessed Are the Sick; Covenant
Carcass - Symphonies of Sickness; Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious
Cryptopsy - None So Vile; Blasphemy Made Flesh
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha; Diabolical Conquest
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten; Pierced From Within
Death - Scream Bloody Gore; Leprosy
Deicide - Deicide; Legion

favorite black metal:
Bathory - The Return...; Under the Sign of the Black Mark, Blood Fire Death
Sarcofago - I.N.R.I.
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky; Under a Funeral Moon; Transilvanian Hunger
Immortal - Pure Holocaust; Battles in the North
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice; Kenose; Fas -- Ite, Maledicti in Ignem Aeturnum
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times; The Shadowthrone; Nemesis Divina
Burzum - Burzum; Det Som Engang Var; Hvis Lyset Tar Oss; Filosofem

favorite grindcore:
Napalm Death - Scum; From Enslavement to Obliteration
Brutal Truth - Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses; Need to Control
Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction
Siege - Drop Dead
Pig Destoryer - Prowler in the Yard
Circle of Dead Children - Human Harvest

Industrial metal:
Godflesh - Streetcleaner; Godflesh
(although I consider Godflesh to be closer to the same genre of noise rock/post-industrial as early Swans rather than any other bands considered "industrial metal" like Fear Factory or Ministry that sound nothing like them)

Well they categories can be useful to an extent. There are degrees of styles in metal that eventually get so far apart that one subgenre doesn't do justice to the style. You'll always have bands on the cusp of things, such as the early black metal and death metal bands that were still rooted mostly in thrash, but after a while the genres start to diverge. Cannibal Corpse clearly doesn't play the same style of metal as Emperor or Celtic Frost even if they all had roots in the same earlier bands.

AcidPhosphate69

See, I don't get into a lot of "truer" metal. The whole territory is a huge turn off cuz there is just so much fucking elitism with it.

Bands I like:
Pantera
GWAR
Kyuss
Acid Bath
Corrosion of Conformity
Municipal Waste
White Zombie (not really Rob's solo shit)
All That Remains
Cancer Bats
Bring Me The Horizon (don't say it, I know)
Architects
etc

I have no idea what "class" half of those belong into. Also, I don't so why a class in necessary or even smart when it comes to music. All you're doign is pigeon-holing a band into a certain genre. It's almost as if if you don't follow these templates laid in place, you don't know what you're doing.

EDIT: lol, i see we're kinda of over-lapping eachothers post times. I get what you're saying though. It helps when explaining things but some people take it too far.

no i havent..ill check them out, and SID...

Hardcore is just a more aggressive form of punk, looser, wilder

the type of metal i tend to enjoy has a real sort of, organized, tight sound...very precise riffs and extremely talented musicians...its almost reminiscent of classical music...and thats not to say hardcore artists arent talented...but it tends to show less in the music...idk.

Could you word the difference?

hardcore in all its forms is still primarily rooted in punk rock. There are a lot of crossovers between hardcore and metal, and in fact, almost all the harsher genres of metal owe something to hardcore punk, but in general, the riffing styles and musical aesthetic in hardcore genres are different, even if they border on "metallic." If I had the time I might try to list some of the specific differences, but it's really something you just notice if you listen to a lot of either genre or have some knowledge of the subcultures surrounding them.

To give you an analogy, the question is sort of like someone asking what the differences are between hip-hop, grime, dancehall, and/or dubstep. You can find tons of similarities that may even seem arbitrary between them, but when it comes down to the general songwriting aesthetic and subcultures, you can trace them to different heritages.

See I like gutteral vocals, but Chris Barnes just made them boring (George "Corpsegrinder" Fischer, they're current vocalist, is more interesting IMO). As you can see on my selections, especially Cryptopsy and Carcass, gutteral vocals can be made interesting.

funny album covers, but pretty boring lyrics imo. If you've listened to enough metal, you'd find them ho-hum.

Carcass and Cryptopsy had fucked up lyrics that were waaaaay more clever and funnier.

Carcass - "Exhume to Consume"

Grimly I dig up the turfs
To remove the corrupted stiffs
Trying to contain my excitement
As I desecrate graveolent crypts...
Fingers claw at coffin lids
Eager festal exhumation
Hugging your wry, festered remains
With post-humous joy and elation...
Body snatched, freshly interred
Whatever takes my fancy
To satisfy my gratuitous pica
My culinary necromancy...
Scrutinised then brutalised
My forensic inquisition is fulfiled
My recipe is now your epitaph
Be it fried, boiled or grilled...

I devour the pediculous corpse
Whetting my palate as I exhume
The festering stench of rotting flesh
Makes me drool as I consume...

Caskets I grate
My larder's a grave
I'm sickly obsessed (with the badly decomposed)
Rotten remains I eat
Purulent meat
What a funeral feast (putrid reek)

Weeping tissue is stripped
Pus dribbles from my lips
Pulverising this pustular chaff
Butchering up morgue's makes me laugh...

Ulcerated flesh I munch
Rotting corpses are my lunch
On bones I love to crunch (on the badly decomposed)
Shrivelled innards I lick
The corpse's head I kick
Crumbling shreds I pick (eat the stiffs)
[Solo: morbid melody for the deceased with salt to taste]

Rancid flesh, slaughter the dead
- Caskets exhumed...
Corpses disinterred, graves disturbed
- To consume...

Bereaved relatives are not amused
As on their dear departed I feverishly consume...

Slavering worms, decomposure burns
Corrosion born, as bacteria gnaw

Desecrate...
Precipitate....(from the muddy grave)
Macerate...
Eviscerate...

Caskets I grate
My larder's a grave
I'm sickly obsessed (with the badly decomposed)
Rotten remains I eat
Purulent meat
What a funeral feast (putrid reek)

Saponified fats, nibbled by rats
- freshly exhumed...
Deep down six feet is where I like to eat
- Human flesh to consume..

Cryptopsy - "Crown of Horns"

Capricornus Rex in tenebris
I long to feel the dark caress
Of your cloven hooves;
I seek the loving warmth of your anus
As I place my worshipful
Lips about your teats.

We hate, and so we gather
By the light of the moon;
The art of veneficium...
This we learned from you...
To make them grieve in their lord,
Their redeemer in flames
Fanned by the scorn of the children
Who now curse his name.

Sire of sin,
You embody me
Undivine...
To you we congregate;
None so vile,
Your magnificent
Crown of horns
Inspires deeds maleficent.

Destroy the parasite,
Destroy Jesus Christ.

They'll crawl in their perdition,
The righteous will be lost
Where gutted angels lie fucked...
Beneath the funeral cross;
We'll dig them a mass grave soon,
And bring to their knees
Those who would have rescinded
The laws of disease.

"The children have turned",
The cherubs wail,
As anticross triumphs
Where the cross has failed.

Hell-spawned majesty, we eagerly
Await the advent of the
Next millennium
When you will return with a swarm from
Beyond to claim your carnal
Lost dominion.

meh indeed.
cannibal corpse has very fine lyrics.

"Nothing Left to Mutilate"
As I walk behind her, her scent trails me
What is it that draws me neared, what could it be?
Once I was normal among the sheep
Now I'm immortal, in the night I creep Searching for the one, 21, she will run from the gleam of my blade, she has strayed
She will pay with the only life that she knows
Captured by the gender she loathes

Now she is tied, terrified, set aside
As I prepare she stared as I tear at the garment she hides behind
Her young flesh is so devine

One final deed, she will plead, I proceed
Satisfying my urge, I will scourge, as I surge through her hallowed feminine
domain
From her young body. I cant abstain

Lifeless she now lies, now untied I defile
Carefully scoring her skin I begin from within
Removing her organs inspected
Still nothing detected

One way to achieve
The info I need
Continuing to cleave

Gradually consumed
She was foredoomed
Body one big wound

Now I am through as I chew on the few pieces that remain
of the brain, nothing gained, I continue my
searching in the night for the one who fulfill my plight

Searching for the one, 21, she will run from the glean of my blade, she will pay
Nothing left to mutilate

some better Cryptopsy lyrics:

"Defenestration"

Oh what a gal!
She seems such a perfect victim:
This I can tell, for if beauty by guilt,
she's guilty

Ordinarily,
I'd not wish to frighten her or hurt her,
But such beauty inspires one
to give the gift of murder

She's the kind of girl you want to
Run up to and tackle
Through a window some floors up
And splatter you both to hell

Come and get it;
Your stuffed bunny's at the window,
But not that far out...
Reach little one! Reach...

Tantalized a child is wont to
take a ill-considered
course of action; such is life:
is experience not bitter?

Leaning too far
out the open attic casement window,
baby plummets
to a messy death not so far below

Rend your flesh to ribbons
on shards of broken glass,
fading screams and abruptly:

Defenestration

"Pathological Frolic"

Who is this Geoffrey?
All I see is this cold cadaver
Why is this Geoffrey
lying in puddles of pus on a gurney?
Tell me of this Geoffrey,
this boy with a noose around his neck;
More about Geoffrey:
why is he wearing his mother's bra?

How old was Geoffrey?
At a guess, I'd say
about twelve or thirteen;
He died accidentally
from auto-erotic asphyxiation;
He'd been masturbating...
our little stiff still has one on
and it's been one week!

The resurrection men
took their sweet time
Cross-dressed fruit:
what a way to die!
Now he's ours:
the apple of our eve;

Felch the dead sphincter:
cold green meat
How did his ass taste?
Tender and sweet...

And then we fucked it...

"Mutant Christ"

Abobminated, tiny god of mine
Overseeing my rest, my lust, my life

Torched in hatred
Loved in Horror sublime
Almost formless
Darkened, and yet you shine

You made me in your image
I deformed yours into mine
Now we're even, O loving god
Equals in my melting eyes

Mutant christ, loving christ
Know me with thine naked eyes
Holy christ, one tenth the size
So unlike the other christs

God-made man (with)
man-made god to adore
Idolatry?
My faith has been restored

Gaze upon me
Bless me, lord, or die
I'll find another little lord to fry

You baked me in this image
so I burned yours into mine
Eye for eye and tooth for tooth
I love you now, O twisted christ

To you Death metal listeners , how do you get to know them lyrics? I mean when I listen to those bands I think it's a shame that such ill and sick lyrics who are pure greatness are diminished by the fact that you can't understand it because of the grunting.... The only album with clear understandable vocals I can think of is The Bleeding by Cannibal Corpse....
But most of the times , I gotta look the lyrics up .... That's kind of fucked up in some way.... I don't know this since I don't own any Death Metal albums but do these guys copy their lyrics in the booklet that accompanies the album?
I owned Slipknot their self titled album and I owned System of a Down - Toxicity and they had their lyrics in the booklet but for those bands it isn't really necessary since they have clear and understandable vocals....

Yeah, most bands have lyrics in the booklet and there are numerous sites you can find lyrics on. I didn't memorize any of those lyrics, I just copied and pasted them from metal-archives.com. By the way, most metalheads don't like bands like Slipknot or Korn (maybe System of a Down is ok by many). It's caled Nu-metal and is considered simplistic and childishly angsty.

Most death metal and black metal lyrics are cliched trash though, so it's not necessary to understand them to enjoy the music. If, however, you really like a band's lyrics, what most metalheads do is just follow along reading the lyrics while listening to it. For some bands this is harder than others (Cryptopsy for instance, although I've gotten pretty good at matching every syllable). After a while you might be able to pick out memorable lines while just listening to the song. But still, the main draw of metal genres is mostly the guitars and drums, the vocals just add to the overall mood/attitude. It wouldn't really make sense to have normal singing for the more extreme styles. The grunting or shrieking is part of the atmosphere.

Anyway, The Bleeding is far from the only intelligible death metal album. Most Morbid Angel and Death is very intelligible. Early Deicide as well. Anything with Mikael Akerfeldt on vocals (Opeth, Bloodbath) is surprisingly intelligible considering how deep his growls still are.

Also, everyone needs to get off Cannibal Corpse's dick and check out the other really important bands of the scene. Y'all don't know shit about death metal until you've heard these classics:

I orefer the real brutal thrash that gave way to death metal and black metal:

Kreator [best albums: Pleasure to Kill; Terrible Certainty]
Sodom [best albums: In the Sign of Evil; Persecution Mania; Agent Orange]
Celtic Frost [best albums: Morbid Tales/Emperor's Return; To Mega Therion]

I don't know if you consider these thrash or black metal (Sodom and Celtic Frost were also on the cusp of thrash and black metal as well, but these guys are probably considered even more so):

Bathory [Bathory; The Return...; Under the Sign of the Black Mark; Blood Fire Death
Sarcofago [INRI]

The other big American thrash bands were Anthax, Exodus, Testament, Overkill, and Dark Angel.

Naah , not really into Black metal though....

It's all about the cold, evil atmosphere much more than death metal, which relies more on the riffs themselves.

There are easier examples to get into. Emperor and later Immortal (not any of the albums I posted) are probably the best places to start.

PSdXGcmPTWc
very catchy song, though it has a lot of German thrash and death metal influence, so it's not pure black metal.

Not all bands do the corpsepaint and armor shit. That got played out by the mid-90s. Of course a ton of bands still do it, but you'll find many of the scene veterans quit that stuff years ago (Immortal is the exception, but they don't take themselves too seriously).

Oh of course. I was really into both their albums a few years back. I loved how they combined a darker version of Alice in Chains and David Bowie with thrash-death influenced sludge metal. I kind of got less enthusiastic with them and haven't listened to their albums in a while, but they are still a cool band.

You like any of the other real nasty sludge metal bands? I can't get into stuff like Crowbar, but I do quite like Eyehategod, Buzzoven, and Grief. And Melvins of course, even though they aren't really fucked up and nasty like those others.

I've been getting more into shit like Electric Wizard, Acid Witch, Bongzilla and such. I've been told that stuff is more along the doom lines? Any recommendations?

That stuff is usually considered stoner metal or stoner doom (or even stoner sludge lol). I'm really not well versed in any Doom metal or stoner metal. I know who the major bands are like Candlemass, St. Vitus, etc. but I don't really listen to any of it.

Everything, except GOD, has in itself some measure of privation, thus all individuals may

These are the fruits and symptoms of

the assumption of humanity and the simultaneous occultation of Divinity.

And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Triune GOD,

deprived of the Light of Splendour.
Dost thou still stand in undiminished Majesty
after the exinanition of divine attributes
the face of profound fire gone astray,
exhaling austerities in concealed, divine radiance?

Kenosis, O theory of great peril!
Blinded, sanguineous eyes and with a trembling hand,
a frail androgynous being holds the perilous doctrinal balance, robed in a maculated garment spattered with the sordid blood of the Flagellation, of the lacerations and fierce wounds
carved by royal attributes, of the crimson spurts
dripping without end,
as was celebrated the High Mass of the Comforter.
Kenosis, O theory of great peril!
Rob GOD of any attribute and fill the shattering universe
with the pestilent scent of putrefaction and the glorious cloud of death,
for steadfast, at any cost, He must be.
Solely the incarnate Word proclaimed by all the prophets and apostles
would have, in dying, an infinite value,
sufficient to atone, by His astonishing work,
for the Sins of the world.

Res Rapta... Res Rapienda... hast thou succumbed to the original malady?
For being empty himself, He giveth empty answers
to empty enquirers; for whatever enquiry may be made of Him, he answered accordingly to the emptiness of the man
In Visceribus...
A willing expiatory Victim, calling constant shame and ignominy upon itself;
was thine irretrievable substance still intact in this Sinai of global Penitence,
dost thou remember thine past Theophanies, the burning bush
and the Angel of the LORD?

In the next place, it never approached an assembly
of righteous men; but avoideth them,
and cleaveth to the doubtful-minded and empty
and prophesieth to them in corners,
and deceiveth them, speaking all things in emptiness to gratify their desires...
Art thou working on collective deliverance?
Observe Merkabah, the chariot of the glory of GOD,
adrift and exiled, the Pilgrim of Light, grandiose and weeping.
Thine aura, compared, is but pale and frail, alike to the one of an ailing child...

Vacillating faith, thine salvific virtue shall fail to make nil a cataclysm of Judgement.
The suffering of the Just shall be aggravated in grotesque proportions,
pillaged, ravaged, overthrown.
The realms of warmth and reassurance, of a maternal womb,
shall disappear gradually under the crumbling yoke of Sin and Time...
The Advent of Plerosis is the destiny of Man and shall shatter up to the Heavens,
a savage aperture to the High Mass of the Comforter:

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but so much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling...

Cthulu,. I know that shit is not what most "true" metal heads consider metal. It's the pop of metal and it's really nothing original, I know that. It's just simple ass shit you can trhow on at a party and get the fuck down.

I can't stand scene kids either. They piss me off. I don't fit the stereotype of any real scene, and I get looked down upon at shows cuz I'm not wearing skinny pants and flashy t-shirts. It's just not my look and I don't like it.

The music in and of itself, isn't terrible. It's the scene hipsters that really lend the stigma to it. I liken it a lot to ICP and Juggalos. I can laugh and like an ICP song, but I fucking HATE juggalos.

I mean, if I'm at home listening to music...it's usually not even metal, per se. If it's not hippie jams bands like Umphrey's McGee or or whatever, it's TOOL or Rush or stoner metal/desert rock.

Hell yeah. Paracletus was awesome. I have no idea what to expect from them now, though, since they are finished with their "trilogy". Some times I wonder if they are even a full-time band or just Hasjarl and Mikko with a bunch of session musicians from other black metal bands. (I wouldn't be surprised if members of Antaeus, Funeral Mist, Watain, or Ofermod had recorded parts seeing as how they all seem to collaborate on lyrics and artwork, and released stuff through Norma Evangelium Diaboli).

Love how they seamlessly mix that old school Celtic Frost & Hellhammer sound with doom metal and goth rock and even some of that alternative rock influence from Apollyon Sun (the industrial metal band Tom G was in before Celtic Frost reformed - "Myopic Empire" was actually an Apollyon Sun song that was to be featured on their unfinished second album and an early, more electronic version was featured on the Celtic Frost demo Prototype released before their comeback album Monotheist).

It seems to be split between people who think Pleasure to Kill or Terrible Certainty are the best. Kind of like Hell Awaits vs. Reign in Blood; Ride the Lighting vs. Master of Puppets; Morbid Tales vs. To Mega Therion, Under the Sign of the Black Mark vs. Blood Fire Death; Persecution Mania vs. Agent Orange.

They are both good albums, but I like Pleasure to Kill better because it is overall more aggressive and brutal, closer to death metal in some songs than classic thrash. But Terrible Certainty is still a great album.
